Re: [UC] Arcade at the Bridge

2004-11-18 Thread Gina Renzi
There are several creative types here. To those of you who know the room that
might be filled with video games, what would you put in there?

I ask because whenever I go to The Bridge, i look into that empty, dark room
and try to imagine what would work there. Truth be told, I do this whenever I
see an under utilized sspace. I could see an arcade working (I'd hope that fun,
retro games would be included rather than more violent ones), but I could also
see interactive video art as well as small screens constantly running shorts
from film students, small filmmakers, etc.

[UC] A Voting Query (who woulda thunk it?)

2004-11-02 Thread Gina Renzi
Hello
To those seasoned voters out there, and to those who have moved around
a lot, this will seem daft, but it's important, from a young voter.
Currently, I live in West Philadelphia. I moved from South Philadelphia
about 17 months ago. This is my first living situation away from my
parents, with the exception of my time spent in the Drexel U. dorms.
Anyway, when I moved to W. Phila., I registered to vote in W. Phila.,
of course. And as you can surmise, this was my first time registering
elsewhere. When I lived in South Phila., I did participate in the
presidential [s]election of '00.

Well, here, I have been thinking that I am registered in West only (I
even received my "this is your first time voting in this district"
reminder in the mail), but yesterday, a local electioneer visited my
parents' home in South, and asked them if they and I were voting. When
my father told them that all of us are, but that I am registered in
West, they told him that I am still registered in South. Do the rolls
in South just have me on them because I have voted there? I've been
trying to get through to voter hotlines for 2 hours. Any
suggestions/experience? I fear that my vote might not count if I vote
in the wrong location. I'm currently in South, visiting the parents and
urging my grandmother to vote, but I will be making my way back to West
this afternoon.

Thanks.

Freedom Cinema Festival presents a multi city, one night special screening and democracy party, including simultaneous screenings in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Oregon, and California. http://www.freedomcinemafestival.org

Featuring:
7pm: Bush Family Fortunes
8pm and 10pm: Unprecedented : The 2000 Presidential Election - new edition with Danny Glover and new voting machine information. Executive Producer Robert Greenwald will introduce the film live by telephone.

This event will be hosted by and sponsored in part by Vitamin D of Vitamin D Productions. http://www.vitamindproductions.com.

7pm: Bush Family Fortunes: Follow award-winning reporter-sleuth Greg Palast on the trail of the Bush family, from Florida election finagling, to the Saudi connection, to the Bush team's spiking the FBI investigation of the bin Laden family and the secret State Department plans for post-war Iraq. These are the hard-hitting reports that have been seen in films like Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, broadcast internationally on BBC Newsnight television, and are found in Palast's international bestselling book The Best Democracy Money Can Buy. http://www.disinfo.com, http://www.gregpalast.com/bff-dvd.htm

8pm and 10pm: Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election is the riveting story about the battle for the Presidency in Florida and the undermining of democracy in America. Filmmakers Richard Ray Pérez and Joan Sekler examine modern America's most controversial political contest: the election of George W. Bush. What emerges is a disturbing picture of an election marred by suspicious irregularities, electoral injustices, and sinister voter purges in a state governed by the winning candidate's brother. George W. Bush stole the presidency of the United States... and got away with it. " ...the movie highlights those on the front lines --from the African-Americans who were turned away from the polling booths for assorted reasons. In one memorable scene the filmmakers freeze-frame a 'protest' against the ballot recount, identifying participants as staff members of Republican elected officials." --Elaine Dutka, Los Angeles Times

"The 2000 presidential election's chicanery is explored in a 50-minute documentary from Joan Sekler and Richard R. Perez ---a powerful piece of agitprop filmmaking seemingly designed to re-ignite a fire under Democrats and perhaps make Republicans take an honest look at their party's actions... ...This filmis a first step in a return to examining what happened and [what]deserves TV exposure. It could be used as an organizing tool for election reform groups as well. The filmmakers quickly examine such topics as the purging of alleged felons, overwhelmingly African-American, from voter rolls; the problems with ballot design and counting; the infamous "spontaneous" demonstration that helped cut short the ballot recount in Miami/Dade County; and the conflicts of interest that many felt should have forced at least three of the Supreme Court justices to recuse themselves from the election decision. This film's only flaw is its brevity; the subject is so vast that an enhanced DVD release is called for." -- Andy Klein, Variety

New Yorker Magazine - "will hold you in a state of appalled enthrallment"
Los Angeles Times - "illuminating and persuasive"
BuzzFlash - "see this film, which is very unnerving, to say the least."
Variety - "a powerful piece of agitprop filmmaking."

[UC] 2nite 5/11: Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Devil Music

2004-05-11 Thread Gina Renzi
a spooky way to continue the work week:

Tue. 5/11 at 7pm: Devil Music Ensemble produces a live score to Robert Wiene's
1919 film "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." at The Rotunda: 4014 Walnut Street,
Philadelphia

Formed in Boston in 1999 by guitarist Brendon Wood, Devil Music Ensemble
explores all facets of music from rock to electronic, orchestral to folk, and
improvisational to incidental.

Performers:
Tim Nylander: drums, percussion
Jonah Rapino: electric violin, vibraphone, synthesizer
Brendon Wood: guitar, lap steel, synthesizer

"The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" is considered the most cherished film of German
expressionism. As a horror film, it stands alongside Dreyer's Vampyr and
Murnau's Nosferatu for its stunning visual embodiment of expressionist ideals.
Caligari's story tells of a series of murders committed in a small German town,
coinciding with the arrival of Dr Caligari (Werner Krauss) at the local fair.
Caligari's cabinet contains the sonambulist Cesare (Conrad Veidt), who can
apparently predict the future. Two friends, Alan and Francis, and their mutual
beloved Jane (Lil Dagover) visit the fair, and Alan has Cesare predict his
future. He is told he will die that night. Sure enough, during the night he is
murdered. Suspicion naturally falls on Caligari and his sleepwalking
henchman...and in order to keep the element of suspense, you'll have to attend
the showing to experience the dramatic conclusion that is the Cabinet of Dr.
Caligari.

Devil Music Ensemble's score is both beautiful and extremely dynamic, bringing
the characters and the film to life as if for the first time. The film runs 1
hour, 15 minutes. there is also a 15 minute Q & A with the band.

Penn stated that it does not want to play a major role, in the sense of not
putting up more Freshgrocers and Bridge Cinemas. In the opinion of the

it is time for more grassroots and small-modular development.

That is precisely why I have been hired as a cultural asset manager. My

fundraiser, and we could use help. Please feel free to contact me with any
questions, and help out/vend if you wish!

Thanks.

Check out unique arts, crafts, and wares - while supporting a one-of-a-
kind community performance space - at The Rotunda this December
14th!

PHILADELPHIA, PA - November, 2003 - The Foundation at The Rotunda
will be holding a one-day fundraising Flea Market on December 14, 2003,
from 11am-5pm!

Due to budget cuts and rising expenses, The Foundation, which is the
student and community group that maintains The Rotunda, needs your
help to keep its level of community programming consistent for the
2004 calendar year. Over the past few years, The Foundation has
presented free, all-ages events that are open to the public at The
Rotunda. These events have run the gamut from traditional Indian music
to DIY punk shows, experimental electronic showcases to puppet-making
workshops, political film screenings to dance theater, etc. In effect, The
Rotunda has become a safe, friendly, bustling hang-out for all types of art
and the people who create it.

The Foundation is looking for artists, crafters and so on to sell their
stuff - anything goes - from original, handmade art & photographs, crafts
and baked yummies, to vintage goodies, used books and records,
clothing, those rollerskates you outgrew long ago, and other neat stuff.

Renting a space is cheap - just $10 for (1) space - 6 ft. across x 3
feet deep (includes depth of table). Bring your own table/display - or
contact Gina Renzi in advance to rent (1) table for $2. Your $10 rental fee
goes straight to The Foundation at The Rotunda and you keep all the cash
for stuff you sell! Please reserve your space by November 30th. Contact
Gina for payment details and deadlines.

Of course, if you want to donate a percentage of your sales that day to The
Rotunda, that would be swell too.

Donations for The Rotunda's sale table are also being accepted.
Suggested donations include books, educational materials, records, cds,
tapes, dvds, videos, electronic equipment, musical gear, "music,
tv, and movie memorabilia," artwork, crafts, home decor, home supplies
(kitchen, bath, etc.), hardware, clothing (please wash and dry before
donating), toys, office supplies, art and craft supplies.

To rent a space, arrange a drop-off, or if you have other items you'd like
to donate, please contact Gina Renzi at The Rotunda at 215-573-3234. No
unsolicited donations, please.

Included in the vendor list will be the "Makin It" Crafts Collective, on
hand to sell their handmade arts and crafts. Live entertainment will be
on-site providing music for the flea market (TBA), and refreshments will
be available for the hungry and thirsty. Those who don't find what they're
looking for, but still want to contribute to The Rotunda, can leave a
donation in the donation jar.

The Rotunda is located at 4014 Walnut Street (just off 40th & Walnut, next
to the Bridge Movie Theatre & across the street from the Fresh Grocer).

For questions and information about the event, please contact Gina at The
Rotunda at 215-573-3234/ [EMAIL PROTECTED], or Tricia Gdowik at

[UC] Important Political Film Screening Sun. Nov. 9

2003-11-04 Thread Gina Renzi
Please come to this. Experience the viewpoint of one group of filmmakers
and the information they chose to spotlight regarding the Presidential
Election of 2000.

Info is as follows:

Sunday, 11/09 at 7pm.
At The Rotunda: 4014 Walnut St., Phila.

Screening of "Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election." 50 minute
documentary.
Introduction by and discussion with Richard Ray Perez, Producer,
Director, Writer, Director of Photography. Perez has produced multi-media
presentations for the best selling book, Pigs at the Trough, by author
Arianna Huffington and public service announcements for the activist
organizations MoveOn.org and TrueMajority.org, and more.
The film is the riveting story about the battle for the Presidency in Florida
and the undermining of democracy in America.

>From the moment the polls opened, it was painfully clear that something
was wrong. While the media seized on the controversy surrounding the
poorly designed "Butterfly Ballot", much larger civil rights abuses were
overlooked.

Focusing on events leading up to election day and the attempt to count
legally cast votes in the days that followed, Unprecedented examines a
suspicious pattern of irregularities, injustices and voter purges—all in a
state governed by the winning candidate's brother.

One of the first indications that something was wrong came early on
election day. Thousands of African-Americans who had voted in previous
elections discovered that their names were missing from the voter rolls.
Investigators later uncovered irrefutable evidence that exposed an
elaborate strategy where thousands of Democratic voters were purged
from the rolls. These voters were disproportionately African-American.

The evidence shows that Governor Jeb Bush, Secretary of State,
Katherine Harris, and other Republican state officials ordered the
manipulation of a list of former felons to include thousands of legitimate
voters who had no criminal history. In Florida, ex-felony offenders lose
their right to vote for life. But the manipulation of this list denied thousands
of legitimate voters their franchise. In an election that was determined by
537 votes, these purged voters would have reversed the outcome…

Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election is a cautionary tale,
warning us that we must insists our elections be conducted in a manner
above reproach, that all legitimate voters may exercise their franchise, and
all legal votes must be counted. Anything less undermines our faith in
democracy.
Film synopsis at http://www.unprecedented.org

Rock the Vote will be on hand to register people to vote and answer
questions about voting. Also, Kevin Zeese will be speaking briefly. Kevin
is a director of the Campaign for Fresh Air and Clean Politics which is
working on the Campaign for Verifiable Voting in Maryland -- challenging
the use of unverifiable, unauditable electronic voting machines.

Sunday, 11/09 at 7pm. Free admission for all ages. Donations accepted
for the venue and film makers.

[UC] Re: New restaurants - Kabob Palace Review

2003-10-20 Thread Gina Renzi
I too have eaten at Kabob Palace.

I left happy and full, for $16 for 2. I do agree that the service is a little
confusing, but that is nothing that a question to the person behind the
counter didn't fix for me.

Needless to say, it is not a typical American restaurant, nor would it ever
claim to be. They changed the interior to resemble restaurants of the
same ilk, which is understandable. I could be wrong, but I get the feeling
that they never wanted it to look like a diner. That diner just happened to
be an available space. Now, if a diner style restaurant had opened in that
space, and changed the interior, I would be upset. However, the present
interior is simple and reminiscent of similar spots. I thought of it as eating
in the dining room of someone's home, and felt completely comfortable,
once I asked a few questions about the menu. Also, they may have taken
some cheaper routes because their restaurant is so new. One never
knows.

As for the plastic cutlery, I'm not sure if that is a temporary feature.
I do agree that foods should be labeled, and there should be a "seat
yourself" sign, so hopefully those suggestions will be passed to the
owner, so that people not familiar with certain customs and food will be
able to enjoy their experience there.

Still, with all of the plastic-people trendy spots opening, I revel in eating at
a restaurant owned and run by people whose backgrounds come from
the same place that the cooking comes. It's a little adventure and learning
experience right in my neighborhood.

As for the food, I ordered Aloo Gobi, which came with rice and salad. The
salad came with the most delicious cucumber yogurt dressing (I think) I
have ever eaten. The entree had just the right amount of spice for me,
which was great, because I did not order it a certain way. They just read
my mind :). The naan was thick, chewy, and flavorful with sesame seeds
baked into the top half. .

My friend ordered curry chicken. I cannot vouch for it, since I don't eat meat.
He did seem satisfied, though.

In summary, there are a few kinks, but I still give it 2 thumbs up.

night, and we were very saddened and disappointed. Not that the
food was bad -- I'm not qualified to review Indian/Pakistani food. But,
Two complaints:
>
> 1) The "service" (if you could call it that) was completely lacking.
This place seems geared to the foriegn-born already familiar with the
food and customs. There was little explanation of the food items. It
wasn't clear how you order: table service? The platters come with a
choice of one of the curries which are displayed at the "counter" where
you place your order. But they are not labeled. (We had a choice of 2
vegetarian curries, and 4 goat curries, after we asked the counter-guy
to identify them.) There was no asking of "do you want a beverage
with that? Water? " I ordered a mango lassi (sounded good), but it
never arrived. We really could have used some water-- but none was
offered. Plastic forks and spoons, no knives.
>
> 2) The very sad part was the fact that the interior of the previously-
meticulously-restored American Diner was now hole-in-the-wall silly
decor. Gone are all remnants of the previous diner (except for the
stainless steel walls). All cheap industrial carpet -- no tile. Silly
chandeliers. If you remember the American Diner interior, you will be
very sadened to see it now.

kabobs are amazing. Hands down the best I've ever had. They had a
full menu but, after we got our heart set on a few items, they
explained to us that they only make a few of the items each day so
be sure to ask before looking at the menu. The portions were large
(we took enough home for lunch the next day) and the price was
cheap (under $15 for two with drinks). The main entrees we ordered -
a lamb stew and a vegetable stew with okra were very flavorful and a
nice heat to them but were a little greasy for my taste. I'm not sure if
they were still working the kinks out or if that was the way it was
suppose to be. There was a family with children behind us and a
couple on a date. On the opposite side of us were 2 tables of men.
I'm not
