[UC] model mugging full-impact self-defense class for women--to be held in Philly
Hi, neighbors. This is an email from one of the owners of Prepare, Inc. in New York City. When I lived there, I took a number of these classes. They're the same kinds of classes as the model mugging in the Bay Area in California: they're full-impact, and the women who take the class learn boundary setting and muscle memory. There is a female instructor and at least one male instructor who becomes the mugger--the participants learn how to respond when they are verbally and physically attacked. There are also simulated rape scenarios and women learn how to handle those as well. I cannot emphasize how incredibly important these classes can be: they are skills for life. The class is NOT CHEAP, but it doesn't even cost a quarter of what an in-state course for credit would cost at Temple or UPenn. In light of the rising crime in our area and in Philadelphia in general, I thought I would share this with the Purple List and UC neighbors. Here's the information you need as well as a phone number if you want to register with a credit card. Payment plans are available. Re: [UC] Possible Mail Thief in the hood
I haven't used an unsecured mailbox since I moved away from my hometown nine years ago. I had lots stolen out of my mailbox there... and that was Boulder, Colorado. A bigger problem is what I encountered in Fairmount where people would break into the locked door of my building and then break into the locked mailboxes. I am shocked at how many of my neighbors actually have packages delivered to their homes and have the delivery services leave them on the porch in this day and age. I've had a PO box for the last 3+ years and have continually had my important legal/financial mail sent there as well as other mailings and parcels. You just can't trust outdoor mailboxes anymore. It's a damn shame. Both homes have exterior (unsecured) mailboxes. One neighbor has been finding both her own and other people’s mail opened in her box days after it should have arrived. (Personal cards appearing in the wrong box with no envelope, just the card. Credit card applications opened and addressed to folks a few blocks away. Important gov’t forms appearing in the mailbox with no name or envelope. Etc. Etc.) The other neighbor has had Netflix disks go MIA and confirmed seeing a woman take mail from a neighbor’s box on her block this morning. She also spoke with our USPS delivery person who said, in her travels, she saw mail from the 49XX block on the 50XX block. (Otherwise, USPS delivery has been consistently good for the last 6 months since this new mail person took our route.) If anyone else is having problems, please post where and what you are seeing so we can stay alert. (And if you have an exterior mailbox, now may be a good time to get a current credit report to make sure everything is on the up and up.) - Naomi 5000 Catharine St. -- Mario Giorno PO Box 30932 Philadelphia, PA 19104 westphi...@gmail.com
Re: [UC] piano lessons in the area?
There's a Suzuki school at 47th and Cedar. It just moved in to the old Carrot Cake place. Looks kind of nice. Also, famously, there's Settlement, which has a sliding scale (last I checked) and the West Philadelphia branch is on Wynnewood. Lots of teachers post on Craig's List too. Re: [UC] barking dog?
Dear Lorna, Statistically, only 1 in 10 people affected by noise actually complain about it. I'm sure plenty of people are also adversely affected by this particular dog, but we now live in a society where people who complain about noise are looked at as the bad guys. (To the extent that a film director was murdered over a noise complaint: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/07/nyregion/07actress.html?_r=1ref=adrienne_shelly) Barking dogs are the number one noise complaint in all urban (and suburban) areas. This site is recommended by the Noise Pollution Clearinghouse: http://www.barkingdogs.net/ You should check out the Noise Pollution Clearinghouse, as well. It's an amazing site: www.nonoise.org I would personally dial 311 and make official complaints with the address and the name if you have it, so it's officially on record somewhere. Down the road, that might be useful. My dad has made complaints about a neighbor dog and his city sent someone out to the offending neighbor's house to question her. Not sure if that's how Philly works, but I do think that noise pollution control is important to the Nutter administration. -Katharine On Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 8:26 PM, energyteacher energyteac...@yahoo.com wrote: Any ideas what can I do about a dog who barks non-stop and neighbors who talk about my mother's parenting of me when I ask them to keep him quiet? Can I call the cops - will they help? This starts at 6 am. Is there a noise ordnance in Philly before 8 am or so? Who can help - I'm getting ready to go postal on this dog. They say it's not a problem because I'm the only one who complains. Well, duh, I'm the one who lives closest to them and he's barking into my open windows. If anyone has heard him, anywhere in the vicinity of 46th and Springfield (he's loud!), I'd appreciate it if you would complain to them, too. 1013 S. 46th St. Lorna Sophia {{(*_*)}} Calling You Back to Mindfullness http://ManifestingMinute.com What you think about, you'll bring about!
