[UC] Relocating to University City

2013-02-24 Thread Robin Gresham-Chin
Hi All,

My good friend, Dan Montes, is considering relocating his Voice Studio for
Classical (operatic), Musical Theater & Speech from South Philly to University
City. He is curious about the community of singers on this side of the river
and would like to know his prospects for finding students in our neighborhood.

He has recently been working with my daughter, guiding her voice through
exercises that develop her ability to sing without damaging her vocal folds
(vocal chords). He is one of the most amazing and supportive teachers I have
observed, and I think he would be a magnificent addition to the neighborhood.

His own classical voice is awe-inspiring. He was a finalist at the Southwest
Regional Met Auditions and won first place in the Adult Classical Vocalist
category for the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition.

He has taught in the old-Italian school of vocal production, known as “Bel
Canto”, for thirty years. He bases his instruction on decades of research and
direct training in four lineage methods of classical vocal cultivation. Dan
graduated with honors in Vocal Performance from the Texas University, with both
Bachelor and Master degrees in Music. His specializes in vocal rehabilitation
and is also certified in K-12 education.

He can supply diction coaching in singing, Italian, French, German, Spanish,
Latin, and English.

He is experienced in the direction of opera, musical theater, children and
adult choirs, church choirs, and recitals.

If any or all of the above interests you, please email him at:
danmonteste...@gmail.com

He would love to hear from you and get to know the University City community.
Also, feel free to let him know if you are interested in lessons or have any
ideas to share about his potential relocation to University City.

[UC] Need Books and Toys

2009-08-26 Thread Robin Gresham-Chin

Hi All,

Are you cleaning out toys and books for young children?
I am trying to help a 24 year old, single, father of four. He has the
assistance of his parents, but there is no money to spare for toys and
books. I am seeking clean serviceable toys and books that are safe
and appropriate for:

An 11 month old girl, not walking

A three year old girl

A five year old boy with developmental/ learning disabilities. He
doesn't speak yet. Yes, he is receiving services.

A curious seven year old girl

They also have a nine year old girl, an aunt, in the house who told me
she loves to read Disney and Baby Sitter books at school.

I am particularly interested in non-toxic art supplies, games for
young children that encourage school readiness, blocks and other
building toys, and toys the encourage fantasy play and imagination.
Age appropriate DVDs are also welcome.

Let me know if you would like to help and I will stop by and pick them
up.

Thanks so much,

Robin Gresham-Chin

Hi All,

I just tried checked out J&P Produce at 4820 Spruce St. 215 474-8600.
The owner, Christina, said they get veggie and seafood deliveries
daily. They also have deli meats and cooked fast food platters,
featuring grilled, broiled, and fried seafood. They deliver and the
store is extremely clean. I told Christina I would put this message
on the list-serve. She said that if you come in or call with an order,
mention the list-serve she would give you a pound of free bananas or a

2008-05-14 Thread Robin Gresham-Chin

Hi All,

It is time mark your calendars for the 3rd annual:

West Philly Art Rising Showcase

May 24th, from 4:00 to 6:30 PM

Studio34 (4522 Baltimore Ave.). $5 at the door.

This is that great talent showcase of West Philly youth that list
folks raved about last year! Many people were upset they missed it.
Read the article below to find out why. Oh, and this year there will
be a raffle for a 1-year membership with Fit Gym!

West Philly Art Rising Showcase – Celebrating Rising Artists From Our
Community
Formerly known as the University City Talent Show, the West Philly
Art Rising show will again feature visual artists, dancers, musicians
and actors. Reflective of our name change, this year’s show has been
further enriched by the participation of established artists,
collaborating to help bring emerging artists to the stage. The truly
satisfying thing is that all the artists live or work in West
Philadelphia, giving evidence once again of the richness and vitality
of our community. The expectation is that new collaborations will
arise and continue in an organic fashion as a result of working
together on this performance! We invite you to witness the process
and enjoy the results of the current work. And we will share with
you what has happened as a result of last year’s show.
As artists, we are unified by our common pursuit of the truest
expression or ourselves through our art: who we are and what
motivates us. The pleasure of witnessing that expression in others
compels us to want to support and encourage one another as we each
work towards this goal. In a very real way, artists can be the
leading lights in community building, and the artists featured in
this show especially embody this in many ways. Let me tell you how:
Let’s begin with Studio34! It is with great pleasure that we find
ourselves here for our event. The founders – Angela Norris, Steven
Fisher and James Peniston - “ envision a community that nurtures
individuals and families in their pursuit of physical, emotional, and
spiritual wellness. We will celebrate, connect and create communities
through healing and creative arts.” In the short time since its
opening, Studio34 has pursued this vision actively, and we feel
privileged to be part of the fulfillment of that mission. Their
welcoming support of us and our show has meant a lot to us, and we
look forward to what our new relationships will bring forth.
Owen Brown, a jazz vocalist and violinist, opened our show for us
last year. Over the years as vocal coach and mentor he has been
involved in the launching of many successful recording artists’
careers, both solo singers and groups. Since last year’s show, he
has worked with Chelsea Bulack, and they will present several songs
together for us. We appreciate the dedication with which he continues
to mentor and teach musicians and performers. Owen will also solo
over one of Jon Bulack’s tracks, giving us a taste of his own talent.
A collaboration that came together specifically for this show began
with the writing of a one-act play called “Waiting for Oprah”, by
Joseph Blake. This thought-provoking look at race relations/self-
awareness in America today will be brought to the stage by Chelsea
Bulack, Mike Taylor and Justin Valentine, directed by Connie Norwood.
Don’t miss it – its relevance given the current Democratic race will
give you food for thought, and insight into the mindset of real
segments in our society. Joseph is an experienced playwright,
journalist, community activist, and educator and has long been active
in West Philadelphia. Connie is a long-term resident of West
Philadelphia, and an experienced actress, writer and director. We
are privileged to have this collaboration between experienced
dramatists and emerging performers make its debut here at our show!
Tuphace (aka Mike Taylor) has truly entered into the spirit of
collaboration for this show. He took on the challenge of being in
“Waiting For Oprah”, as well as bringing himself and his back-up
musicians to perform for us. He is working with several of the other
performers on an ongoing basis, to further their art. Tuphace is an
up and coming recording artist who blends hip-hop, rock and dance
music to bring his thoughtful message to the music scene. Since
performing at our last show, he has continued to develop important
relationships in the music world, including becoming closely
associated with the Roots. He will soon be releasing an EP through
Okayplayer, a ground-breaking online music community started by the
Roots. He will be headlining his own show on June 14th at the
Trocodera, and invites his home community to come out and see him at
our show before you go to see him at the Troc!
Vice Versa appeared in our last show, having taken a beat/rap Beacon
class that Tuphace taught. Khalif Thompson and Chad Howard have

[UC] Daytime Mugging

2007-07-27 Thread Robin Gresham-Chin
Today between 3:30 and 4:00 PM my daughter and I were parking on Pine
St. near 46th. I noticed two male teens walking very slowly on the
other side of the street. I felt they were up to no good so I told my
daughter not to unlock the car door. The young men were looking in
cars as they passed and glancing around as if to check who might be
observing them. They eventually noticed us watching and picked up
their pace. After they were down the street and had crossed 46th St.
We got out of the car and started for our gate. We decided to keep
an eye on them as there was a young woman standing on the corner.
They walked past her then turned around. The larger of the two
grabbed her from behind, put his had over her mouth and put her in a
choke hold. The other tried to grab her bag. My daughter screamed,
"Get off her" and I dialed 911. Both of the teens ran down 46th St.
toward Baltimore. The poor young woman was a student from Thailand
who wanted to rent an apt. in the neighborhood. She was on the phone
talking to the landlord when she was attacked. She and we reported
the incident to both the Philadelphia and PENN police. Both
responded to the call. We invited her into our home afterward to
rest and compose herself and then took her back to school. Her neck
was a little sore but she was OK.

The teens were between 15-19, black males. One was approx. 5'
10"-6', slim build, short black hair.
The other was around 5' 5", slim, black hair about 2" long. He was
carrying a shiny silver object that looked like a remote control for
a TV. He may have had a scar or deep depression on the right side of
his face.

Re: [UC] House numbers on transoms

2007-06-01 Thread Robin Gresham-Chin
I think you can do this yourself. I have done it and with new
products out there it is getting easier.
There are books on gilding in art stores and I am sure the library
too. You would first need the individual stencils of the numbers. A
clear adhesive that is sold for the purpose, a gold leaf or imitation
gold leaf, a soft brush and burnisher are also on your list. I
believe these supplies can be bought in kit form. You most likely
can go to a how to site on the net for more info. Pearl Paint on
South St. has everything you need.

Hi,

I just spoke to the Director of Wildlife Services, Charles Brown, who
informed me that Deer Immunocontraception will be available with-in
the next two years and will be used upon request for deer control.
Can the Woodlands wait that long? I hope so.

[UC] Deer herds increase do to hunting

2007-05-21 Thread Robin Gresham-Chin

Here is some more info:

For further information, please visit Mr. John Strieter’s web page:
www.strieter-lite.com.

Effective Long Term Deer Management Strategy;

Utilization of Immunocontraception

The most appropriate and effective method for long-term management
under the conditions of the NFP is immunocontraception.
Unfortunately, in the deer management report, pages 39-42, the
reference material cited is quite out-of-date. A film on
immunocontraception, produced 12 years ago, conveys wishes by the
scientists to have a one-dose immunocontraceptive that lasts multiple
years. These wishes became a reality more than five years ago. The
latest study at the National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST) entitled, Effects of immunocontraception on a suburban
population of white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus, by Rutberg,
Naugle, Thiele, and Liu, published in Biological Conservation, 2004,
demonstrates the ability of this method to reduce population size by
blocking conception and reducing the rate of birth. It is interesting
to note that the site similar in size and habitat to the Norristown
Farm Park.

In fact, a study that has not been published yet shows that the one
dose immunocontraceptive still has a 70-80% efficacy of preventing
pregnancy after 5 years!

The recommended immunocontraceptive, PZP, works by inoculating
females with a pig protein that, like any vaccine, produces
antibodies. In this case, those antibodies block sperm from
fertilizing the egg. Natural behavior and secondary sexual
characteristics such as antlers are maintained because there is no
hormonal interference. PZP cannot harm humans or the environment
since it is quite simply a pig protein that is broken down in the
animal’s own system. PZP immunocontraceptive has been used for over
30 years in over 100 species of animals. Since 1990, successful
results on free-roaming white-tailed deer are as close to
Pennsylvania as NY, CT, OH, NJ, MD, VA, and SC. So why not in
Pennsylvania?

Immunocontraception is more effective long-term population control
than hunting because it acts directly on the birth rate of the
population. If hunting is the only management tool for population
control, it will require a hunt every year or every other year
because of the “population rebound.” Understanding population
rebound is critical to development of a long-range management plan.
Briefly, nutrition controls reproduction and survival rates in many
animals, including deer. Since hunting generally occurs after the
mating season, removal of the target figure of 100 deer proposed by
the NFP management plan, i.e. approximately 30% reduction, (in an
average hunt 20-30% reduction occurs), there is more food available.
Since deer conceive multiple embryos (unlike humans), the does
produce more twins and triplets instead of single fawns. There is
also lower neonatal mortality, increased conception rates, and higher
prevalence of pregnancy in yearlings. In the study by Richter and
Labisky, the incidence of twinning on a hunted site was 38% compared
to 14% on a non-hunted site. The Fish and Game Agency in NJ reported
that surviving females after a hunt had produced enough offspring not
only to replace those killed but enough to increase the size of the
herd by the very next year. One dose PZP immunocontraception, on the
other hand, has a 70-80% efficacy of preventing pregnancy even after
5 years.

Hunting in urban and suburban settings incurs additional costs in
increased security, park image, and potential lawsuits. Fairmount
Park is an excellent example of the problems faced by using only
hunting. After seven years, the deer herds are not decreasing, costs
have escalated due to extreme security measures they have had to
employ, and there continues to be more lawsuits to battle. Two
excellent examples of long-term success of population reduction by
the use of immunocontraception only are:

Fire Island, NY with a treated population of 215 deer showed a
60% reduction over six years.

At the 233 hectare campus of the National Institute of Standards
and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland (which is roughly the size
and has similar habitat of NFP) showed 33% reduction over 4 years.

Of course, there are costs associated with immunocontraception as
well but the great news is that FPPA has also found five
organizations that have expressed interest in funding PZP
immunocontraception for deer at the NFP. FPPA is requesting that NFP
Advisory Board consider immunocontraception as part of the long-range
management plan for deer. NFP is well positioned to take a
leadership role in using effective, modern techniques for managing
deer populations in suburban settings in Pennsylvania.

ideal spot to go out and do target practice on wildlife.

and which had a successful run at the Prince Music Theatre.

Jon Bulack will perform with his younger brother Ian, and with Mike
Taylor, as well as other members of Chosen. Clyde Evans, the artistic
director of Chosen, will also perform, bringing us some of his unique
moves. Prepare to be mesmerized by these excellent performers.

partner Jen Jenson and some of his students.

Drew Wright will be performing a martial arts demonstration, drawn
from the kung fu tradition.

Paige Chin will be returning to our Talent Show, but this time as a
winner of national proportions! She recently was named a 2007
Youngarts Level I winner by the National Foundation for Advancement
in the Arts. In order to win this prestigious award, she had to
compete against 7,300 other students from across the nation, and
attend a finalists session in Miami. Congratulations Paige! She
will also be exhibiting her work at Studio Incamminati's Open House,
April 20-21.

Stefan Kietzman who is now a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of
Fine Arts (PAFA) will display his paintings.

Rachel Robbins, who grew up on the 4800 block of Windsor before
moving away, has returned and will display her photos.

Alan Massey will display photos from his masters project in
architecture, and fill us in on his work in the neighborhood.

Jen Jenson will be playing flute, accompanied by David Bozenhard on
guitar. This is in addition to dancing with Garincha Hilaire. We
will be sure to allow her to catch her breath between acts!

We will also have the pleasure of hearing Josh Quigley (neighbor Joe
Clarke's nephew) sing. Josh is a member of the Philadelphia Boys
Choir, and is also a magician. After singing he will "work the
crowds" with sleight of hand during the reception.

We will also have the opportunity to hear Chelsea Bulack sing a
selection from "Wicked", accompanied by her mother Patty Bulack on
the piano. Chelsea has just begun lessons with Owen Brown, and it
will be a special pleasure to hear the results as well as perform at
the same event as her new mentor.

Chelsea Bulack will be performing a classical Greek monologue,
coached by her friends at Curio Theater Company. You will be
interested to know that Chelsea will be performing in Curio's next
production, "The Green Bird". We are very happy for the
opportunities that Chelsea has had to grow as an actor this year,
especially the work that she has been able to do with Curio.

Another actor that will be performing is Hannah Schill. This young
lady will be performing an original monologue, coached by Chelsea.
Once again, I love the ongoing ways that reaching out to one another

Philadelphia Councilman Suggests Building Rubber Sidewalks

February 5, 2007 10:11 a.m. EST

Mary K. Brunskill - All Headline News Staff Writer

Philadelphia, PA (AHN) - A member of the Philadelphia City Council
says he will be holding hearings on a number of environmentally
friendly city projects, one of them being making sidewalks out of
rubber.

City Councilman at large Jim Kenney said the rubber sidewalks, which
are made from recycled tires, do not crack and will last longer than
sidewalks made out of concrete.

However, the new sidewalks won't enable people to bounce - rather
than walk - down the street. He said they rubber will be very solid.

"It's a very solid material," he said, according to AP. "Probably
harder than a running track. Certainly not a trampoline. Not like the
Bud Light commercial, where they're banging the bottles off the ground."

Kenney says rubber sidewalks will also cut down on the number of
accidents resulting from slips-and-falls, as well as the lawsuits
that sometimes come with them.

OK, I wanted to stay out of this but... There are often good reasons for people needing to save parking after a large snow storm. My husband cleaned out my spot. I am unable to. Here is my dilemma. I qualify as handicapped and could have a spot permanently saved for me but out of interest for my neighbors I have chosen not to. We already have one handicap parking space on the block and I know of at least one other person on the block who would qualify. If we all had spaces set aside it would be difficult for others to find a space at all. No one on my block has criticized me for holding my spot during this weather, my neighbors watch me take five minutes to climb the stairs to my house, they understand the situation. I don't know about other blocks but I watch at least three people a day park on our block and walk to the trolly. I assume they are avoiding paying for center city parking and consider West of 40th a secure place to leave their cars. Parking is really tight here and I feel saving my spot for a week instead of year round is better for all of us. So I suggest that we try to think of this block by block. I am sure there are selfish people out there but there are also many like BA Showell and me who are struggling with more than the weather.

I find this an interesting topic, especially reading the various opinions about parking.
If it is rage, then consider me one of those. As a "senior citizen" who needs to drive (can't ride SEPTA  very often because of medical reasons), and as one who pays to park IN FRONT OF MY (Residential Permit Parking--car must be registered to that address) I would be more than furious if someone took my parking spot! (someone did Saturday night, a neighbor's guest, there for a party, and I very politely asked her to move her car , Jersey Tags/Driver. She did, with no hesitation, since she was leaving anyway.
I would be interested in knowing why some of you think it is O.K. to park in a spot someone else has dug out? You can't be that "crass". And to think there are "braggers" that delight in destroying someone else's property.shame, shame"what is this world coming to?"
