Re: [UC] Re: UC Burglaries
Hello Melani and Manuel: I don't think that doing a story will get these guys off the streets. More likely, you'll sensationalize it to get people to watch tv. I disagree. A TV news story would raise awareness of the burglary problem in University City. As a result, our neighbors are more likely to notice suspicious behavior and report it to the authorities. It also would place pressure on the police to increase patrols. How is any of this a bad thing? Mark You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. Re: [UC] Out of ink
Hello Cindy: Where does anyone go to get ink cartridges for their printer? Anywhere around here, or must I drive down to Staples on Columbus Blvd.? Penn's Computer Connection (near 36th and Sansom, in the back of their bookstore) has an impressive array of toner and ink cartridges on display in their store. I would be surprised if they don't have what you're looking for. However, you could give them a call to make sure -- 215-898-3282. [UC] Google Maps' Street View comes to Philadelphia
Try this link to see Google's photo of the Other Green Line: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8ll=39.956843,-75.211415spn=0.011514,0.020084z=16om=1layer=ccbll=39.953824,-75.209684cbp=1,389.79087100085985,0.5,0,1.9327092942446904 Or, if you prefer, - go to http://maps.google.com, - enter your address, - click on Street View in the upper right-hand corner, and - click again on the little yellow person that appears on the map. Street View requires that your web browser be Flash-capable. Their coverage of University City and West Philly is very good. I was surprised to see they omitted large areas of Center City! Re: [UC] Access to University Employees
Hello G: Does anyone know of a Newspaper or Listserv or central info source for workers of the hospitals or Vet school or med school?? I have a nice three bedroom house to rent and it would be perfect for employees of the hospitals, but we don't seem to get any responses from the usual Craiogslist and the Office of Off-Campus Housing. Open for any ideas Maybe you're asking too much for rent! Mark You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. Re: [UC] Zoning notice is up on Locust St side of former stores at 45th St SE corner
A zoning notice has been posted on the Locust Street side of what used to be three stores on the SE corner of 45th Locust. Not much detail. Rumor has it that the Other Green Line, currently located on the 4300 block of Locust, will be moving to this space. I noticed that when they cleaned out the storefront units, they knocked holes in the units' walls so you can walk between them on the inside. If the rumor is true, it looks like the OGL's new space will be a lot bigger than its current location next to the laundromat. I'm not sure why a cafe would need a zoning variance though. Is it so they can prepare food inside? Mark You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. [UC] More robberies and assaults in University City
(For the readers of the ucneighbors list: I am replying to a post made by Liz Campion on the univcity list. However, I feel the points I want to make are appropriate for both lists, so I am directing my response to both audiences.) Hello Liz: regular basis is hard to define and inflammatory. Why is discussing the incidence of crime in University City inflammatory? Inflammatory to whom? it is not an experience I would define as normal or regular. Allow me to quote from just one article from today's Daily Pennsylvanian: On Aug. 29 at about 8:45 a.m. a female [...] reported that an unknown suspect approached her on the 3800 block of Woodland Walk, pushed her, took her wallet and fled southbound on 38th Street. On Aug. 28 at about 5:30 p.m., a male [...] was on the 4200 block of Spruce Street when he was assaulted by a male offender who tried to remove some of his belongings. On Aug. 28 at about 8:30 a.m., a female [...] reported that an unknown suspect grabbed her bag near the intersection of 41st and Pine streets and fled westbound on Pine Street in a vehicle. These robberies and assaults aren't happening in the dead of night, and suburbanite Penn undergrads are not exclusive targets. These incidents victimize ordinary people who live or work in the neighborhood, as they walk to and from their jobs or public transportation. Welcome back to a new school year in University City. The neighborhood will be at its most chaotic (and most vulnerable) until the neighbors adjust to its changing population and people have a sense The incidence of crime in University City is not necessarily tied to the Unviersity's academic schedule. These outbreaks of street crime happen year-round. What about the rash of violent assaults perpetrated by children on adults walking on Locust St. in July? Was that a transitional period as well? It's Penn's summer break! THAT'S why teenagers are punching non-students in the head at 45th and Locust and robbing them of their belongings! of who belongs where, how to cross the street at a busy intersection, and how to honor bike lanes. I don't understand how crossing the street or bike lanes are relevant to this discussion. Mark You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. [UC] 43rd and 42nd Streets: Two robberies at gunpoint last night
My roommate got robbed at gunpoint last night near 43rd and Baltimore. Luckily, he wasn't hurt, but the people who robbed him (three young black men on BMX bikes) took his wallet and phone. The police said they robbed someone else at 42nd and Locust too. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to point out how statistically safe our University City Village is. However, the fact remains that residents of our neighborhood are accosted by men with guns on a very regular basis. Mark You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. Hello deeno7100: street. This has nothing to do with jealousy or hatred and everything to do with street-not-so-smart students?walking up and down the?area with [...] city (before all of it's?real estate glory) is West Philly. Until people realize that this is big city living and you must walk the streets alert at night?the robberies?will continue to happen. Police can't be everywhere all the time. I have lived here for 25 years and never have been robbed once, if you look like a victim you will probably?become Your analysis is completely incorrect, and your tough talk advice equally inappropriate. My roommate is a lifelong Philadelphian, born and raised in Roxborough, and a graduate of the public school system. He knows a thing or two about being street smart and not looking like a victim. All of the street smarts in the world aren't going to help you when three young men ride up to you on bicycles at 43rd and Baltimore and stick a gun in your face. My roommate's only mistake was walking around his own neighborhood after dark. Thanks for blaming the victim! Mark You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. RE: [UC] Bag Snatchers, Bottom Smackers
Anyway the West Philadelphia livejournal group is reporting this morning that there was some sort of gunfight in Clark Park last night -- does anybody know anything about this? I've heard that there were several shots fired at 42nd and Chester. Fortunately, nobody was hit, but a couple of parked cars were damaged by bullets. Re: [UC] Ear candle wax removal treatment
the procedure at all. With claims like a 144 person survey, come on who does a 144 person survey? Did 6 people get sick prior? Were the Read the article again. It wasn't a 144 PATIENT survey, it was a survey of 144 PHYSICIANS -- ear, nose, and throat specialists. The author's source (cited in the article) is a published study by three other medical doctors titled Ear candles--efficacy and safety. The study came to the conclusion that ear candles have no benefit in the management of cerumen [earwax] and may result in serious injury. Here's a link to the cited study on the National Institutes of Health website: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrievedb=PubMedlist_uids=8849790dopt=Abstract Another link -- Health Canada's Ear Candling page, which also cites the study, and warns of No Medical Benefits - but Lots of Risks: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/iyh-vsv/med/ear-oreille_e.html Not surprisingly, ear candles are illegal in Canada. Then the article continues with at least 14 hurt. What does that mean-- oh wait a minute the following sentence explains it: 13 cases of external burns, 7cases of ear canal obstruction with candle wax, and 1 perforated eardrum. I'm no mathematician, but I thought 13+7+1 equaled 21? Or do they not count ear obstruction as hurt? At least No. Dr. Dryer's article, quoted again: A 1996 survey of 144 ear, nose, and throat physicians, found that 14 had seen patients who had been harmed by ear candling, including at least 13 cases of external burns, 7 cases of ear canal obstruction with candle wax, and 1 perforated eardrum [3]. 14 PHYSICIANS had seen these injuries in one or more of their PATIENTS. People who have been hurt by quack technicians mishandling fragile parts of the body. It's sounds like that quackwatch article was someone (albeit a doctor) who is a quack himself. It doesn't even sound like the doctor even had Herself. The writer is a female physician. I trust her advice -- and the advice of other medical doctors -- on medical issues. Much more than shady websites selling colonic cleansing, or inexplicably angry masseurs wildly cutting-and-pasting attacks against dentists (?) in place of real debate. Re: [UC] Zoning Variance for Tattoo Parlor
We feel strongly that a Tattoo Parlor will not be a positive addition to Cedar Park. it's funny, but the tattoo parlor at 43rd and pine has never been a problem to anybody. i lived across the street from it for two years (1998-2000) and a block away from it for another year (2002-2003). it seems to be a good neighbor. the exterior is well-lit and cleanly maintained, and trash is properly disposed of. most importantly, it fills in a retail space that i think would be difficult to fill with any other business. (perhaps other people who live on the block would disagree. i think there's a participant on this list that lives on the same block of pine, and i'd be curious to hear her opinion.) I sincerely appreciate your help in opposing this variance. would you prefer this storefront on 47th street remain vacant for yet another year? from my observations over 6 years, it seems like this retail spot has been a difficult space to rent. certainly, tattoo businesses hold a certain stigma, but i feel an empty storefront is more detrimental to any neighborhood. mark You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. Re: [UC] (the former) azalea court
Does anyone have any information about the future of the Azalea Court complex on the south-west corner of 40th and Pine? When it was closed for code violations, was the closure temporary or permanent? it was gutted this fall (you know, the big removable dumpsters) and it stands empty at the moment. it was sold on 3/25/2003 for $1.7 million and penn owns it now (or whoever OAP INC is at 3451 walnut street). i imagine it'll be converted into luxury rentals this summer. mark You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. Re: [UC] Visit the Green Line
I stopped by the new Green Line cafe last friday for a quick coffee to go. while i am impressed with the green line cafe -- particularly its amazing transformation from a florist to such a nice-looking coffeeshop -- i must say that their hours leave much to be desired. i showed up this afternoon around 3pm, sunday ny times under my arm (it takes me a few days to *really* finish it), hoping to spend an hour or so drinking some coffee. i reached for the door...locked! i peered inside...chairs on tables! the hours posted...7am-2pm! am i the only person in the neighborhood who likes to drink coffee in the afternoon and evening? i work at night, and i often don't get up until noon. i can't think of a similarly-styled coffeeshop in the city that has such short hours. for example, the last drop at 13th and pine is open late into the evening. and closer to home, the comet was open -- and busy -- well after dark. yes, i was little disappointed as i made my way up larchwood to buy a cup at sam's place at 45th and osage. i was surprised that this neighborhood shop was not mentioned earlier on the list, as it has several types of excellent coffee (and is open 8am-9pm every day of the week). mark You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. [UC] too much popularity of cars
And all of which is directly related to one of the most constant complaints from people who live in Spruce Hill -- there's no place to park. the key to solving parking problems does not lie in decreased density. the problem stems from a far more affluent population moving into the neighborhood who can afford a car, or sometimes two of them. spruce hill was not designed to be auto-centric. it's not called a streetcar suburb for nothing. car ownership is endemic in america; owning an automobile is seen as a necessity for those who can afford it, even in a city neighborhood like spruce hill. utilizing our neighborhood's excellent public transport facilities (or -- gasp -- riding a bicycle!) saves one a lot of worry over parking. it is also the only real solution to the parking problem. before pointing fingers and finding a scapegoat for their own selfishness, all car owners should take a look in the mirror and ask themselves if driving a car in the city is truly necessary. i wish everyone who continually complains about a lack of parking in university city put even 1% of that effort into campaigning for increased transit service instead. mark p.s. does anyone else see the fallacy in endlessly quibbling over minute architectural details with all of these decidedly non-historic hunks of steel and rubber lining the street?
