I did a massive closet clean-out the other night, and now have 5 bags of
clothes sitting in my living room. Some are older and some are casual, but
most are work clothes that I’ve either shape-shifted out of or gotten tired
of. I could take them to 2nd Mile – that would be easiest, since they’re
down the block – but I’d like to pass them on to someone who really needs
them, rather than see them on the racks at 2nd Mile and regret my efficiency
and re-purchase some. If someone can recommend a shelter or women’s
organization that needs work clothes, I’d appreciate it. I know such an
organization exists, I just can’t remember the name right now.

Thanks.

2003-12-04 Thread Elizabeth F. Campion

Dear John and List Sharers,

I believe that both:
 Gloria Guard's facility
"People's Emergency Center"
3939 Warren St (at Lancaster) 19104
http://www.pec-cares.org
and

Sr. Mary Scullion's "Project Home"
 http://www.projecthome.org/
at 1515 Fairmount Street

welcome Baby and other New or Lightly used, clean Clothes.
Any lightly used gloves, scarves, coats and cardigans are probably most
welcome at this time.
They are often distributed directly to families with great need.

Project Home does run a Thrift Shop (for education purposes) but the Poor
and Homeless can be comped in some circumstances and "earn buying
dollars" in others.
I've donated my old clothes to Project Home and was thanked by a staffer
who me that larger sizes and "interview" clothes are especially welcome.
Project Home also runs a Restaurant, the BACK HOME CAFE. Again its
primary mission is for job training. It can be an uplifting experience
to donate and than treat yourself to a wonderful lunch. It is awe
inspiring to contemplate the restaurant, its great food and considerate
staff as a consequences of Faith, Hope and Charity.

Both organizations were founded by women with minimal resources.
Both organizations believe in and choose to recognize the dignity
potential of every human (recipient or donor).
Both convert volunteered time, talent and donations into successes.

Here are a few, more local options.

Vivianne Nachmias, of this list, collects Children's books (for Pre-K
through 8th grade readers) and does a magnificent job getting them into
the hands of children as learning incentives and at "Book parties" she
sponsors for the Lee School Children.
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sister Alice at SFDS 215-222-5819, is often in touch with families who
have a direct need.
She collects food at Thanksgiving and toys at Christmas. But, may know
of a need you can fill.

There is a Woman's Shelter on Baltimore at 42nd.
I have, in the past, delivered games, school supplies and toys directly
to it and been assured that items will go to a good use.

Good luck and thanks for reminding us of the potential to recycle things
that have outgrown their usefulness to us.

All the best!

Liz

Hi John,

One of the best places I can think of is the Lutheran Settlement House
on East Frankford Avenue just a few blocks above Girard in Fishtown.
They have many programs for women and children, single parent
households, mothers in need of training and support after different
kinds of drug, alcohol or spouse abuse programs. Their address, phone
and fax are:  Luther House, 1340 Frankford Ave., Phila., 19125;
215-426-8610; fax: 215-426-0581. Internet address:

Can anyone suggest a charitable organization that will take infant
clothes? (or, anyone need some baby clothes?)

We would like to give them to someone who will not be charging for them
(such as a thrift store). The clothes can be dropped off.

Possibly the Parent-Infant Center could use them. They are nearby and may accept donations.

I don't have the number handy but I'm sure they can be googled.
