Re: [UC] Move your cars! Fight the conspiracy!
Thanks Melani and Karen, I think I may know the person. It makes sense that the PR might have come from this office. I know that I read about the roadwork on a couple or more occassions. (I can't remember where right now). Like your experience, the project suggested traffic improvements only. I personally did not see the building mentioned before the construction started. Mikey, I thought that poetry was yours! Usually, honest people give credit to original authors before someone points out that their stealing someone's work. I'm glad you waited a couple of days after being exposed. Like a good UCD boy, no one noticed how cleverly you avoided shame since you pretended it was an oversight. Otherwise, people would have said. First, Mikey steals someone's poetry and pretends it's his. It turns out that he attempts to pester each of Glenn's thoughts by running to his computer and stealing rather than putting any thought behind his constant pestering. Had you not waited a few days, the people would end up saying; that Mikey is one pathetic dishonest thief. Instead, they think Mikey cleverly made an ass out of Glenn by posting the stolen work after each of Glenn's crazy posts. Glenn and others were just mean and crazy when they pointed out that Mikey is a pathetic thief when all along he just forgot to let everyone know the truth. I'm sorry you are really busy at 1:04 AM, but you're such a sweetie to take the time to tell the truth. It's no big deal, right? You really got me good, Mikey! You're such a smart BID boy! Unfortunately, you'll now have to make an asshole out of yourself by actually having an original thought. If West can do it, you can too. Some crazy people are going to suspect your honesty and integrity in the future. A crazy but honest person who doesn't steal poetry to be an ass, Glenn PS: Why do people need to google? The city periodically repaves its streets. The 4700 block of Cedar Ave., which was repaved this time, desperately needed the work. The last time it was done, the material began to crumble at the 48th Street end within weeks after the completion of the work. Some of you listees, I suppose, would prefer to bring the matter to a vote. It's a democracy, after all, and the residents of the block should consent to any proposal to repave the street. If the residents consent to having the street repaved, the owners of cars parked on the street should receive engraved invitations to move their cars on a particular date, at a particular time, and not to park on the street until some other specified time, when the work will have been completed. The workers should go on the morning of the scheduled work from door to door, politely requesting that the owners of the cars move them. Owners of cars who fail to respond positively should be provided detailed accounts of the location to which their car has been towed, and free pickup service so they do not have to strain themselves by walking a few blocks. We can also vote on replacing street lamp light bulbs when they fail, if you wish. That's democracy, isn't it? I hope my comments can be helpful. I am glad one of the local streets actually needed this use of resources. You're mocking the attempt to look for reasonable solutions to simple problems. You are also mocking the importance of our right and duty to hold government accountable by questioning. Is a reasonable approach to issues such a terrible burden as your hypothetical account suggests? If I understand the point you are attempting to make, we should all give up too. It would be simple to design a reasonable notification, for example, if we had democratic processes so that government takes reasonable steps to minimize harm to the people. What about posting the street work 10 days in advance when not an emergency? Is all the towing really a more efficient approach for whatever entity is doing this to justify the harm to our neighbors that the recent approach causes? Wouldn't the people rather see the workers earning honest pay posting signs so the residents could have a chance to warn strangers and very few people would be towed and have horrible experiences? By the way everyone, didn't the city, back when it was in control here, post street work in advance? Or am I just remembering the pre-occupation days as the good old days when times were good? Folks will think I'm making it up because of my views about local problems, but the first time I saw this large scale towing without notification was before a Judy Rodin speech in Clark Park. I was sitting on my porch and got my little car away in time. After the towing, the SUV's showed up and I later learned it was Judy giving some speech at the Dicken's statue. It was a long time ago. Also, most streets don't need this work. Is why, such a burdensome question? I'm a bit frightened to ask, but what is your alternative to this inefficient democracy you dislike so much? As I told Matt, there is no need to respond if you don't want. I offer my comments with the best intentions. Glenn You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. Paul... are you trying to distract the readers of this list from the real issues this community is dealing with? You boast of looking the machines straight in the eye, sizing them up and facing them down. I'd like to know why Paul isn't telling us about the very DISTINCT image of Santa Claus that was formed while the pavement was drying on 46th street south of Woodland. Paul are you working for UCD? Does UCD not believe in Santa Claus? Is UCD going back on its promise to give all the boys and girl of University City toys this year? I'd like some answers. They were up and down the street with a bull-horn for an hour or so this morning, and now they're towing cars. Zoom. I'm amazed at how fast it is with this new towing technology. One casualty in all of this was the huge yellow NO PARKING sign that they'd painted in front of my driveway about six years ago. I'll miss that. Now you're starting to get it. I'm sorry; I've been so busy that I haven't been able to help you with this resurfacing problem. Let me try to give you some further help. Rememember, the transfer of the eastern end of Baltimore Ave to Penn School of Vetrinary Medicine. Sure, we were told it was all done to make the traffic patterns better at the VA hospital. A lot of people on the list claimed that that was a lie and the whole project was to turn over Baltimore Ave for the Penn expansion. I didn't get involved then because I like big buildings and the veterans are used to being treated like shit anyway. The fact that this became a much more dangerous place for the older VA patients to cross is an acceptable inconvenience for Penn. If we found out which agencies in the state and city were involved, and if we found out which Penn officials and entities at Penn were involved; we could begin to understand the current UC district resurfacing. Corporations tend to bundle together their deals. I don't think anyone announced on the list that Penn has recently disclosed that they operate alobbying office in Washington (it was in one of the Penn publications within the past year). I was told several years ago that Penn was becoming very helpful to the regular operations of government on the state and local level. Much like we see locally, UCD and Penn infiltrates the government like civic associations with their employees joining the civic association boards. If we can find these previously involved parties in the Baltimore Ave transfer to Penn, we can then further refine our investigation into the current tendency to resurface district streets unneccessarily while other city streets crumble. I think this waste and towing process has gotten our neighbors attention. Keep me up to date with your progress, I'll try to offer my brain power to help your investigation as time allows. The daemon said that he would take me home To the pale, shadowy land I half recalled As a high place of stair and terrace, walled With marble balustrades that sky-winds comb, While miles below a maze of dome on dome And tower on tower beside a sea lies sprawled. Once more, he told me, I would stand enthralled On those old heights, and hear the far-off foam. -Original Message- From: Glenn [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2007 11:51 AM To: Mike V.; UnivCity@list.purple.com Subject: Re: [UC] Move your cars! I'm afraid; however, that in your zeal to join the movement to restore accountability, there is a helplessness in your voice still coming from your time in the district. I've noticed in the helpless portion of the middle class, a fatalistic attitude about government leads the ignorant to lable government as evil and respond with learned helplessness. I believe this makes communities vulnerable to these unethical, unaccountable, deceptive corporate fronts like UCD. Isn't it simply amazing to watch the fallacious arguments against my priorities become based in the road resurfacing problem? I see this as a aymptom of this group feeling of helplessness Reasonible people understand that a resource starved government could improve if it wasn't forced to answer to corporations instead of the people. Your mistake is this. While your attempt to stir up somje understanding about the problems with the road resurfacing is good, something about your style leads the reader to come away with a feeling of helplessness rather than a strength to stand up and say, what must be done? Also, your end makes you seem paranoid. Let's try this: People of West Philadelphia. Stand up and demand some answers about the waste of resources being directed into the constant resurfacing of our streets. The people deserve to know why this is being done and why it is not being done in a manner that respects the neighbors. Where is this decision being made? Why are the resources not used to fix city streets where they are broken. The government is not a corporation. The government owes the people answers and a responsible process. With this resurfacing (over the summer here in the University of Pennsylvania ruled district), the government is treating the people like unaccountable unethical corporate entities do. This must stop now! There is anger about this process and people deserve answers. I don't understand, looking out the window, the trucks say Highway Department, have City of Philadelphia logos, and yellow and blue colors (the city's). The men are all wearing fluorescent green vests! Don't you get it? They look just like city workers and city equipment, but they are proven agents of the undemocratic dark forces of gentrification and wealthy concert goers - yes, the UCD, which itself is only a front for PENN. So really, yellow and blue has become blue and red. WATCH OUT, your car may be next! The machines are crossing 47th Street! (And did you ever wonder why none of this is to be found in the mainstream media? Or even written up in neighborhood rags by local reporters who are themselves involved in the story? You don't think it a coincidence, do you?) Paul -- AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at *AOL.com* http://www.aol.com/?ncid=AOLAOF0002000437.
