How long will it take before the first "the community was never
consulted about this design" post hits this listserve?

This will, of course, be followed by the usual UCD/"Penn the 1000 lb.
Gorilla" bashing and then, finally, some anti-HD sentiments (including,
as always, a reference to Home Depot spindles and the word "anointed."

I wager less than one hour.

Its recently come to our attention that many people are curious about
the construction work going on at the traffic island at 45th and
Baltimore Avenue. We want to take this opportunity to provide some
information about the project.

The project has two main goals:

1. Improve pedestrian safety & accessibility at the busy intersection
of 45th St., Baltimore Ave., and Springfield Ave. 2. Improve the
appearance of the area.

The project is a joint effort of the Philadelphia Department of Streets,
the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, Baltimore Avenue in Bloom,
UCGreen, and the University City District. Collaboratively, these
groups worked together to redesign the traffic island such that
pedestrian crossing distances and visibility would be improved, while
simultaneously enhancing the green characteristics of the island.
Interruptions in the bike lane are only temporary during the
construction period, and the removal of the trees was, unfortunately,
necessary to achieve the joint greening and safety improvements.
However, the island, when completely finished over the next two months,
will feature dramatic increases in planted area, a doubling of the
number of trees, a resurfaced sidewalk running between two planting
beds, and will absorb 100% of the rainwater that falls on it.

All of the partners who worked on this project expect that the new
island will represent dramatic improvements in safety and streetscape.

All you wacky conspiracy-loving types should check out the following

NOT strike the Pentagon.

Why is this a surprise?
Everyone knows that there were no Quakers or Mennonites killed at the
Pentagon, in New York City or in Pennsylvania.

They all took September 11th off from work and did not travel.
