Re: [UC] best pizza joint that delivers
I recently swore off the Wurst house. The pizza was always pretty nasty, although the strombolis weren't bad. Problem was they just kept messing up the orders. Often, I'd get there to pick up, and they'd have forgotten the order, or burned it and started over. While I waited, it seemed like the delivery guy was always showing up and telling the boss that the people he was delivering to weren't there, or claimed they hadn't ordered anything. A few minutes later the people at the correct address would call to find out where their pizza was I've switched to Royal for strombolis, but the answer to the quality of pizza question seems to be that there is no good pizza in West Philly! All of the places mentioned seem to make the oily, undersauced, soggy-crusted 'Greek style' pizza. I think Pizza Rustica at 36 and Chestnut is the local best, in a highfalutin kind of way, but we don't seem to have a really GOOD parlor. Of course, I'm defining GOOD pizza as the thin-crusted floppy NYC stuff one gets at Lorenzos on South, or Marios in Mt. Airy. RE: [UC] best pizza joint that delivers
We have never bought pizza from the Wurst House but until last Fall always had good Italian hoagies from there, but since then they have changed their ingredients or something because they are not as fresh or tasty. However, their BLTs and Reubens are wonderful. For pizza we like Allegro, Colonial and Fiesta. RE: [UC] best pizza joint that delivers
The Fresh Grocer has pretty good pizza -- similar to Pizza Rustica -- a lot cheaper. They do not deliver. As to Royal, I boycott that place because it has looked the same -- a complete shit hole -- since 1985 when I first moved to UC. Do you think security grates on all windows and doors are really necessary for a pizza place at 41st and Baltimore? Re: [UC] best pizza joint that delivers
I have a favorite joint that hasn't been mentioned yet. California Pizza at about 33rd and Powelton is where I order from more often than not. I like their sausage and pepperoni the best...or what I like to call the heart stopper. AND, I have never been served roaches with my pie! I don't know how far they go as far as delivery, but they do deliver to my house on the 500 S. block of Melville St. (between 45th and 46th, and Larchwood and Baltimore Aves). Hope that gives you another option. -Chris BTW, it took pizza to get me to post a message for the first time...who would've guessed with all the important (or ridiculous depending on who you are) discussions that happen each day. _ Check out MSN PC Safety Security to help ensure your PC is protected and safe. http://specials.msn.com/msn/security.asp You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. Re: [UC] best pizza joint that delivers
Similarly, I (and others) boycott Fiesta Pizza -- due to their refusal to stop their delivery people from driving and parking ON the sidewalk. Haven't noticed it going on as much recently (maybe they've had a change of heart, like Ghadaffi --however you spell his name.) We had numerous discussions with the owners about the sidewalk parking/ driving problem (This goes back 4 or 5 years ago. Many people were involved: neigbors, SHCA officers, police, parking authority officers and the head of the parking authority, etc.) The Fiesta owners always said they would stop the sidewalk parking -- but, they never did. Never, never, never -- even the same day of our discusssions/ meetings! A Fiesta delivery guy even had the audacity to honk at us to get us out of the way, as a few of us were gathered ON THE SIDEWALK in front of Fiesta, simply talking. I refused to move. His car drove up the sidewalk and edged up to me. He honked continuously, and finally backed up a little, and parked on the sidewalk in front of the store next to Fiesta. There was open parking, in fact, in front of Fiesta (on the street), but, no, that was apparently not suitable. So, I don't think much of the current owners and won't patronize their establishment. They don't seem to give a damn about our neighborhood. So, that's my story. and I'm sticking to it. Re: [UC] best pizza joint that delivers
Jonathan, Yours may be a bad choice of words, since one of the delivery men was recently killed in Royal. I think it was an accident as benign as one of the coworkers dropping a gun, intended for protection. It had been hidden among stacked boxes. This is a chance to for me to say, I'd like to see MANY changes in our gun laws. The best defense is common sense. * Back to PIZZA, I had a nightmare experience with a pizza from Fiesta. The memory can still make me retch. I have had wonderful experience with Colonial's Pizza. And the only time I ever had a delivery problem, the owner gave me a freebie nosh at my next visit. But, for me, the best Pizza (and the best cheese steaks) in UC are at 47th and Woodland. Everything is very handmade. Pizza crusts are crisp. Sandwich rolls are given a final broil for warmth and texture. They don't deliver, but there is lots of free parking. Elani and Anastasio have loyal staffs and hold down a tough corner of our neighborhood. Best! FIESTA, no doubt! Not only do they deliver, but it is an exotic sitdown restaurant, with a full menu of gyros, cheesesteaks, wings and a whole lot more. Yummy desserts too; I recommend the lemon meringue pie or carrot cake. The staff when I last dined there hailed from Bangladesh, Ethiopia and points beyond. This is where my family goes to celebrate when we have anything to celebrate. Definitely NOT a yuppie ambiance. Right across from Le Callebasse and the Queen of Sheba. I'll second the Allegro's recommendation. Their pizza is actually quite cheap -- if you pick up the Coupon Clipper magazine, there's a coupon for two medium pizzas for $11.99. The tomato pie is excellent for the non-dairy folks. Their pizza has a thinner crust than the usual West Philly pizza (Colonial, Wurst House...). I think the thicker crusts are usually too buttery for my taste. They're right on the corner of 40th and Spruce and they deliver to 47th and Baltimore, usually within 30 minutes. -- Matthew Snyder Philadelphia, PA You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. I can vouch for Pasqualie's pizza -- the Buffalo Chicken pizza is probably my favorite. Highly recommended, and they take credit cards. They do have a new management now, though. It's strange, but they've added a complete Chinese menu to their Italian offerings. So far as the pizza goes, I think the recipes, etc. remain unchanged. Don't really know about their delivery policy.
