[Bug 2063379] [NEW] Disk decryption prompt is broken

2024-04-24 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Boot the Ubuntu Cinnamon ISO on any UEFI-capable computer.
2. Install Ubuntu Cinnamon with LVM and encryption enabled.
3. Reboot and wait for the passphrase prompt to appear.

Expected result: The passphrase prompt should be in the lower area of
the screen and should show the keyboard layout that was in use when
using the installer.

Actual result: The passphrase prompt is in the upper area of the screen,
potentially covering over parts of the UEFI firmware logo, and the
keyboard layout displayed is incorrect (for instance if you used the US
keyboard layout, it will show "no" instead).

This should be fixable with some Plymouth theme tweaks. The issue with
the keyboard layout indicator can be fixed by copying over
/usr/share/plymouth/themes/spinner/keymap-render.png into the Plymouth
theme for Ubuntu Cinnamon. The positioning of the passphrase prompt is,
I believe, configurable.

[Bug 2060905] Re: Plymouth screen does not appear during startup and shutdown of an installed system

2024-04-10 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
It appears that the root cause of this is that the `quiet splash`
arguments are not getting passed to the Linux kernel, as determined by
looking at /etc/default/grub and /boot/grub/grub.cfg in the installed
system.

[Bug 2060905] [NEW] Plymouth screen does not appear during startup and shutdown of an installed system

2024-04-10 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu Cinnamon Noble Beta.

Steps to reproduce:

1: Boot the Ubuntu Cinnamon ISO.
2: Install Ubuntu Cinnamon.
3: Boot into the installed system.
4: Log in.
5: Shut down.

Expected result: You should see a Plymouth screen in steps 1, 3, and 5.

Actual result: A Plymouth screen can be seen in step 1, but it is not
seen in steps 3 and 5 - you see terminal output (mostly from systemd)
similar to Ubuntu Server.

[Bug 2013368] [NEW] Firefox is missing in Ubuntu Cinnamon

2023-03-30 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Boot the Ubuntu Cinnamon Lunar Beta ISO.
2. Click "Try Ubuntu Cinnamon".
3. Click on the Application Menu.
4. Hover over "Internet".

Expected result: Firefox (or possibly some other web browser) should be
present.

Actual result: No web browsers are installed.

Additional info: Attempting to launch Firefox from the terminal results
in a message that it isn't installed. Installing it with "sudo snap
install firefox" works, and that's how I'm typing the bug report from
within Ubuntu Cinnamon now.

[Bug 579783] Re: Hauppauge hvr-2200 firmware not included

2011-11-27 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Thanks Caysho.

Alex/Caysho--do you need the NXP7164-2010-03-10.1.fw file to get the
driver to load, or is the .deb in this bug report sufficient for you?

I haven't tried without the file, so would be keen to know if the .deb
here is sufficient or needs to be updated.

As another note, it would be awesome to have a new version of the .deb
file simply so that Upgrade Manager doesn't keep telling me to update!

cvs is ... rather... almost dead?) and uploaded to my ppa:aaron-

issue.

the scroll bar grows as it should.

[Bug 513646] [NEW] Details screen clears instead of updating properly

2010-01-27 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deja-dup

Hello,

I am doing a backup and have the Details window open. It shows the
list of files that have been backed up, but as soon as a new one is

If I click the scroll bar, the box refreshes and shows the list again.
Then this repeats and clears again.

[Bug 498724] [NEW] menu entry doesn't work in XFCE (permission problems?)

2009-12-20 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 477652 ***

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gsmartcontrol

I am using Karmic Mythbuntu (XFCE) and have manually installed
gsmartcontrol. Clicking the menu item for gsmartcontrol does nothing.

If I type gsmartcontrol into the console, it starts and gives a graphical error
about permissions. If I run gsmartcontrol as sudo, it works as expected. I
understand that there is a gsmartcontrol-root that is meant to detect how to
run as root on the system, but gives:
$ gsmartcontrol-root
/usr/bin/gsmartcontrol-root: 5: su-to-root: not found
So I am wondering if the menu entry points to this.

[Bug 192735] Re: mpd no access to soundcard using pulseaudio

2009-11-26 Thread Aaron Peromsik
My first impression when reading #17 was that it shouldn't be necessary
to use system mode for PulseAudio to get mpd to work right. In Jaunty I
had it working as desired without changing /etc/default/pulseaudio. The
mpd wiki page referenced above seems to say that mpd can launch
pulseaudio itself as needed... however the suggestions there didn't help
in Karmic.

In Karmic, running pulseaudio in system mode seems to be required to use
mpd as a server that keeps running regardless of whether a desktop user
is logged in. For mpd to work with pulse in system mode I had to add the
tcp setting mentioned above in comment #8 to /etc/pulse/system.pa (not
default.pa, which would be used for user mode).

[Bug 375711] Re: xvidcap audio settings missing in preferences

2009-11-19 Thread Aaron LaCluyze
This bug also affects me.

Ubuntu 9.10, 64-bit. Installed xvidcap via the Ubuntu software center,
version 1.1.7 on 2009-11-19.

Several discussions suggested that installing the .deb from sourceforge
would fix this. There only seem to be i386 binaries there. Installing
that with --force-architecture worked, but xvidcap won't run, claiming
that libtheora.so.0 is missing (even though /usr/lib/libtheora.so.0
exists.)

[Bug 83987] Re: apt-cacher doesn't know about Translation-[lang].bz2 files

2009-11-15 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Merged the latest Debian changes and they do seem to fix the problem. I
am relatively new at the PPA thing, but I did upload a karmic package to
my PPA (https://launchpad.net/~aperomsik/+archive/aap-ppa/+packages) in
case it will help someone. Although the package was built against karmic
I installed it on my apt-cacher server which is still running jaunty and
it seems to work fine. It's rather refreshing to be able to hit the
Check button in update-manager and not get error messages.

[Bug 83987] Re: apt-cacher doesn't know about Translation-[lang].bz2 files

2009-11-15 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Might be worth an update for Jaunty. When attempting to do a dist-
upgrade on a client whose sources.list references an apt-cacher server
without this fix, the dist-upgrade refuses to run due to the errors
received from apt-cacher. I have so far been using the workaround of
running LANG=C sudo update-manager, but needing to find that
workaround wasn't fun.

[Bug 461494] Re: A print job sent to the PDF printer by Adobe Reader stucks at the Processing state

2009-11-14 Thread Aaron
I have had this problem as well -- I was able to successfully print a
test-page by using the driver for the Laserjet 4P (instead of Laserjet 4
Plus). But it hung at processing for any other print job. When I
switched to the correct driver (Laserjet 4 Plus) I can't even print the
test page. I *was* able to print from Firefox, successfully.

I've tried printing (unsuccessfully) from:
- PDF format
- Scribus

I'm running 64-bit Karmic Koala.

2009-11-14 Thread Aaron
Quick follow-up: since my LJ4+ is setup as a network printer, I tried
configuring it as an HP Jetdirect instead of a normal network printer.
the Processing bug no longer happened, and the jobs cleared out
quickly, but now my printer status bar (on the physical printer itself)
says INVALID PERS.

[Bug 461494] Re: A print job sent to the PDF printer by Adobe Reader stucks at the Processing state

2009-11-14 Thread Aaron
Apparently I don't have a postscript simm - switching from the
postscript driver to the HP LaserJet 4 Plus hpijs pcl3, 3.9.8 driver
fixed the problem. The prints don't look quite as refined, but it at
least functions. I was able to print the PDF successfully this way.

It seems that the nature of this bug might be related to the network
printer type of setup -- perhaps it's an issue with name resolution or
something? Has anyone tried doing printers that are locally installed on
either parallel or USB ports?

[Bug 482961] [NEW] [Karmic] Leadtek Winfast 2000XP remote not set up correctly

2009-11-14 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythbuntu-control-centre

I have a Leadtek Winfast 2000XP (card 34) with a remote Y0400046. The MCC
remote generator does not make this remote work correctly. After using MCC and
checking the generate dynamic button mappings, I have to fix quite a number
of things. I have set out the full instructions here
(http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Leadtek_WinFast_2000#Setting_up_the_remote
 ) and here (http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Leadtek_WinFast#Remote )
1) use a UDEV rule to make a symlink for the event note as described here
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=222672), to stop the remote changing
its device node on boot. My rule is:
KERNEL==event*, ATTRS{vendor}==0x109e, ATTRS{device}==0x036e,
ATTRS{modalias}==pci:v109Ed036Esv107Dsd6606bc04sc00i00,
SYMLINK+=input/bttv_remote
2) the correct configuration file is loaded into lircd.conf, so I do not need
to change this;
3) change /etc/lirc/hardware.conf to read:

# /etc/lirc/hardware.conf
#
#Chosen Remote Control
REMOTE=Winfast TV2000/XP (card
REMOTE_MODULES=bttv
REMOTE_DRIVER=dev/input
REMOTE_DEVICE=/dev/input/bttv_remote
REMOTE_SOCKET=
REMOTE_LIRCD_CONF=leadtek/lircd.conf.RM-0010
REMOTE_LIRCD_ARGS=

MCC has a number of mistakes in its automatically generated one. From memory,
the driver is devinput instead of dev/input and the device node is not
correct;
4) the ~/.lirc/mythtv file is *way* out and does nothing now that the dev/input
driver identifies presses as linux-input-layer. My config file is at
http://pastebin.com/f62afb3cf but is specifically to get the most out of the
Y0400046 remote, so may not cover (or use optimally) the buttons on other
2000XP bttv cards.

just a series of fairly mechanical steps, so it would be great if MCC
could do it for the user. Please let me know if I can be any further

A workaround is to get that failure, then edit /etc/default/ircd-hybrid

Change the line:

Then re-run apt-get install ircd-hybrid. It will finish the config

[Bug 443010] Re: vlc crashed with SIGSEGV in FcConfigFilename()

2009-10-26 Thread Aaron Mayse
Same here. I think it's an audio problem:

-it only happens when playing .mkv files; .avi works perfectly fine.
-it happens regardless of which video driver I'm using (fglrx or the open
source ati driver), and I notice the above user is using an NVIDIA card
-it also affects mplayer, which crashes and specifically mentions audio
problems.

[Bug 445196] Re: Toolbar icons are mangled on intel graphics cards

2009-10-17 Thread Aaron LaCluyze
I also see this bug. In addition to the icons being garbled, the in-
program menus are similarly unintelligible. For instance, if you wish
to change your location, bringing up the location window presents you
with a box that is unreadable.

I had some problems with flickering and artifacts with Stellarium in the
past and turning off Compiz (by simply setting Desktop Effects to
none) would clear that up. This bug happens with Desktop Effects
set to either none or normal, it makes no difference (I did not try
high.)

[Bug 447029] Re: [Karmic Beta][UXA] XRender performance worse than CPU-only

Note that I have Desktop Effects turned to None, so presumably this
is using Metacity and not Compiz.

[Bug 447029] Re: [Karmic Beta][UXA] XRender performance worse than CPU-only

2009-10-09 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
I have now turned Compiz on. I tried to run the QGears2 benchmarks in
batch mode, but it always crashes on the third run of the text
benchmark. It completes fine when run on its own (not in batch mode).

The attached file has the output.

The benchmarks are

GtkDrawingArea - Text - time: 1.25

So it looks as though the main performance issues are with metacity.

[Bug 447720] [NEW] vorbis decoder plugin is missing

2009-10-09 Thread Aaron Haviland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: avidemux

the Vorbis decoder plugin (in plugins/ADM_audioDecoders/ADM_ad_vorbis/)
is not being built. This makes it impossible to open files with vorbis
audio streams.

Upstream has fixed this in branches/avidemux_2.5_branch_gruntster in
r5256. I've attached the specific changes applied to renable this
plugin, and tested that it does work.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
Date: Fri Oct 9 21:30:40 2009

[Bug 447029] Re: [Karmic Beta][UXA] XRender performance worse than CPU-only

2009-10-09 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
I ran the batch tests again under Metacity (after downloading all updates,
including a new -intel driver) and it completed successfully. The results are
here:
http://global.phoronix-test-suite.com/index.php?k=profileu=aaron-6011-18620-11932
They seem better than they were, but still faster with CPU than XRender.

The latest GTKperf gives:
GtkPerf 0.40 - Starting testing: Sat Oct 10 15:39:20 2009

GtkEntry - time: 0.05
GtkComboBox - time: 1.59
GtkComboBoxEntry - time: 0.80
GtkSpinButton - time: 0.29
GtkProgressBar - time: 0.48
GtkToggleButton - time: 0.40
GtkCheckButton - time: 0.23
GtkRadioButton - time: 0.44
GtkTextView - Add text - time: 1.30
GtkTextView - Scroll - time: 0.42
GtkDrawingArea - Lines - time: 1.33
GtkDrawingArea - Circles - time: 4.77
GtkDrawingArea - Text - time: 1.26
GtkDrawingArea - Pixbufs - time: 0.16
 ---
Total time: 13.52

It also feels a *lot* better to use than it did when I reported the bug,
so well done on the improvement so far!

[Bug 355112] Re: Ask.com keeps being re-added to Firefox search bar after updates

2009-09-12 Thread Aaron Kelley
I don't think this is really a Mozilla issue. As per comment #23, this
happens because the path to the Ask.com search plug-in changes each time
Firefox is updated, so Firefox thinks that it is a new search plug-in
that has been installed. This is a side effect of how the Ask.com
search plug-in is included with the package. The fix to this issue is
simple: if the Ask.com search plug-in must be included by default, it
should be put in /usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins with all the rest
of the default plug-ins.

Yeah. Of course, this change would have to be made by the packagers.
If you just move the file yourself, it'll just get replaced at the next
update.

[Bug 331506] Re: BOINC randomly freezes Ubuntu (Intrepid 64 bit)

2009-09-02 Thread Aaron Novstrup
I'm running kernel version 2.6.28-13-generic (the latest jaunty kernel).
The processor is an Intel E7200 Core 2 Duo.

As far as reproducibility, it's pretty intermittent. Sometimes it'll
run for a few hours, other times for days. I've never had it happen
while actively using the machine. Before I realized how intermittent it
was, I suspected that it might have something to do with power
management trying to shut the machine down for inactivity. The crashes
continued even after I disabled that setting, however.

I think you're right that this is a kernel issue, although BOINC
certainly seems to be triggering it -- the crashes started happening
soon after I started running BOINC, and so far haven't happened when
BOINC isn't running.

[Bug 331506] Re: BOINC randomly freezes Ubuntu (Intrepid 64 bit)

2009-08-28 Thread Aaron Novstrup
Forgot to mention last time that I'm also using nvidia.

I compiled and installed the boinc_6.4.5+dfsg-2ubuntu1_amd64 package
from the Karmic source repository, and it freezes my machine, too.

The last entries recorded in the kernel log before the crash (pasted
below) look suspiciously like a loop, but I don't know enough about the
kernel to say whether its just normal behavior. Is anyone else seeing
this? What about on 32-bit machines?

I'm going to continue testing to see if this behavior consistently
coincides with the crashes.

Here's the relevant portion of the kernel log:

[Bug 328717] Re: Rcov fails at the end with NoMethodError

2009-08-02 Thread Aaron Bedra
I am now the maintainer of RCov going forward. I have completely
removed all of the rexml output formatter garbage since it was
completely unnecessary. This problem should not exist anymore. The
only catch is that you need to install the relevance-rcov gem

gem install relevance-rcov -s http://gems.github.com

The rubyforge version is not up to date and no one has been able to
contact the original creator to get him to release the project.

Hope this helps,

Aaron

I'm also seeing this problem on an amd64 system. I'm using Jaunty
(boinc-client and boinc-manager 6.2.18-3). The only project I'm running
is worldcommunitygrid.org.

[Bug 395678] [NEW] tcp connections fail with linux 2.6.31-1-server on x86-64

2009-07-04 Thread Aaron Howell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vpnc

As of Linux 2.6.31-1-server, tcp connections fail to establish to sites inside
the vpn.
in 2.6.30 and prior, everything works as expected.
Now, the connection just hangs, although I can ping and traceroute to the
effected hosts and the traces show the correct path.
I was also able to reliably reproduce kernel oopses when trying to make
connections, which seemed to disable the network stack,
however when I loaded netconsole to try to gather this information, the oopses
stopped happeneing, and as I have no sight, I can't read them directly off the
console.

[Bug 316802] Re: Liferea tries to kill my hard drive with constant seeking after long idle periods / screen saver use

2009-06-17 Thread Aaron Plattner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 290666 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/290666

Emilio, what is your rationale for marking this bug a duplicate of bug
290666? In that bug, liferea is slow to start due to an excessive
number of fsyncs. In this bug, the system is completely idle and
liferea goes nuts with fdatasync calls that stop when I move the mouse
to kill the screensaver.

[Bug 365527] Re: [i945g] Jaunty freezes all the time

2009-05-12 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
I tried upgrading to the 2.6.30 kernel to reduce the many way Jaunty
freezes, kernel oops, GPU lock-ups, and wireless module lock-ups that
arrived with Jaunty. So many major regressions in a single production
release! Problem is the 2.6.30 kernel is built with an old gcc and that
cause problems with vmware server 2, which I need.

So I downgraded and I am now trying the 'jauny-proposed' 2.6.28-12
kernel and -intel driver, together with the 'jaunty-backports' wireless
(iwlagn) module. Things have been a bit better for ~24 hours. The Jaunty
back-ports iwlagn module is still poked, but just causing kernel errors
rather than total machine lock-up like the stock Jaunty one. I need to
get work down so I have actually been using an ethernet cable to avoid
wireless.

As soon I get some time I'll try to find some way to escape the misery
that is Jaunty, downgrade to 8.10 (my happy place :-) or get the karmic
kernel to work with vmware.

[Bug 368642] Re: [915GM] Random laptop lockup after upgrade to 9.04

2009-05-03 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
Doesn't sounds like the same thing sorry - if anything more than your
mouse pointer works on you screen it probably isn't. And I don't think
people with the Intel video lock-ups have any high CPU.

(Suggestion: Check your 'System Monitor' is displaying all processes (on
view menu). I noticed that when you upgrade to Jaunty this preference is
reverted to just show your processes. If you are looking at all
processes you might see what it using you CPU. Likely it is trackerd
using up all of your CPU. It seem almost everyone upgrading to Jaunty
has their trackerd go haywire and consume CPU or repeatedly complain of
corrupt indices. Could be that.)

[Bug 371109] [NEW] MCC doesn't set up bttv IR remote - should use dev/input

2009-05-02 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythbuntu-control-centre

I have a bttv card (Winfast 2000XP card=34) and chose the card in the drop-down
list of remotes in Jaunty Mythbuntu. I thought this would set up the card, but
it did not. I have now made this work and feel that the steps that I took
could be automated (see my Answer at:
https://answers.launchpad.net/mythbuntu/+question/54983
, made into a script and run whenever somebody chose this card from the list.

$ grep -A 4 bttv /proc/bus/input/devices
will give the input device at the end of the last line:

N: Name=bttv IR (card=34)
P: Phys=pci-:03:07.0/ir0
S: Sysfs=/devices/pci:00/:00:14.4/:03:07.0/input/input6
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=kbd event6

Ship http://linux.bytesex.org/v4l2/linux-input-layer-lircd.conf with MCC
and put it in /etc/lircd.conf at this stage.

Then generate a *correct* /etc/lirc/hardware.conf to read:
# /etc/lirc/hardware.conf
#
#Chosen Remote Control
REMOTE=Winfast TV2000/XP (card
REMOTE_MODULES=bttv
REMOTE_DRIVER=dev/input
REMOTE_DEVICE=/dev/input/[EVENTNUM FROM ABOVE]
REMOTE_LIRCD_CONF=leadtek/lircd.conf.RM-0010
REMOTE_LIRCD_ARGS=

I'm happy to test any scripts that are proposed. The problem with a GUI
that says it configures LIRC for the bttv remote is that you expect it
to work when you select it. I was quite disappointed to have to figure
it out for myself (by asking on the LIRC list).

[Bug 370696] [NEW] MythTV should use the static device names in /dev/v4l/by-path/* to stop video devices changing on boot

2009-05-01 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

/dev/video nodes change on start-up. This means that, with a normal
mythbuntu install, my TV cards swap device nodes every second boot-up.

There is a script (and discussion) at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7070445
that uses UDEV rules to create a symlink to the correct card each time.

According to Ubuntu Developer Kees:
MythTV should be taught to use the static device names in /dev/v4l/by-path/*
(which exist starting in Intrepid). That's how static naming is being solved.

I will attach the UDEV rule script to this bug as well, so that those

[Bug 301189] Re: Vuze's updater will not upgrade to 4.0.0.4

2009-04-24 Thread Aaron Kelley
Once again, Vuze's built-in updater is not expected to work if you are
using the version installed by the package manager. This copy of Vuze
should only be updated by the package manager. If you want Vuze's
built-in updater to work, just download it from their web site and run
it from somewhere in your home directory.

That being said, I'm also disappointed that the version in the
repositories is so old. However, it looks like Ubuntu just gets Vuze
from Debian's repositories, and they have a really old copy too. Might
be worth filing a bug over there, or looking into what it would take to
get the new version packaged and distributed in Ubuntu.

2009-04-23 Thread Aaron Kelley
Same problem here. I have sun-java6-jre installed, and after upgrading
to 9.04, Azureus will not launch. Worked great in 8.10. (Changing the
launch script to point to the correct Java executable works great, but
this is a completely silly problem. Shouldn't hard-code the path to the
Java executable when there is more than one JVM that will work...)

[Bug 90752] Re: DVB - Guard interval changes for Channel Seven Australia

2009-03-28 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
Even with this fixed the DVB-T channel information is limited and out-
of-date for Australia. It may be unreasonable for the distribution to
try and cover all the world's channels and changes. For Australia
though, I found good information and made an up to date (March 2009)
tuning files. I posted the info here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6970739#post6970739

For people creating or updating the Australia channel files, I found the
DVB-T channel plan for Australia here:

http://www.dtvforum.info/lofiversion...hp/t19148.html

I found what appears to be up to date local channel info for Australia
here:

http://vk3khb.gak.net.au/tv_lists/

From this information I built good scan files for my area.

Note: I found the different channels using guards of 1/8, 1/16, and
sometime 1/32.

[Bug 281289] Re: compiz crashes when switching resolution in a multi-monitor setup.

2009-03-28 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 131679 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131679

I get the sample problem plus others with 8.10 Intrepid and compiz,
however I don't any of the problems with unlocking described in bug
#131679 of which this is supposed to be duplicate. Also, that unlocking
bug apparently affects metacity as well as compiz, whereas the problem
described here definitely only happens with using compiz (switching to
metacity makes this bug go away). It may be the same crash/exit point,
but I suggest it might not be the same cause, so perhaps a separate bug.

I'm using an intel video card on an Lenovo X301. When switching back
from two monitors to one with compiz enabled, I usually get logged out
and need to log in again. I assume the X server is crashing? The
workaround is to switch to metacity, change to one monitor, then switch
back to compiz.

When switching from one monitor to two with compiz enabled, only the
original area remains under compiz control, the rest is blank or full
off old images. Re-starting compiz gets it to take control of the whole
area.

Using compiz and switching to using mirror on external monitors with a
small res, when switching back I often end up with no window manager at
all. Just undecorated windows and no way to get keyboard focus anywhere.

I suspect that the multi-monitor support may not be the root issue, it
seems like any time you reduce the X resolution of the display, compiz+X
can blow-up. Likewise compiz doesn't seem to notice when the X
resolution of the display is increased.

All the res/monitor switching is done with the Gnome 'Monitor Resolution
Setting' applet. It seems like compiz is not really integrated with
Gnome. I gather compiz is better integrated in KDE 4, so hopefully that
integration is coming for Gnome?

If it is useful, what and where should I collect error logs for posting
here when this stuff happens?

Aaron.

[Bug 135418] Re: black screen after resolution change with activated compiz

2009-03-28 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
I get something similar to this whenever I increase the screen
resolution with compiz enabled. The screen is not usually totally blank,
it is full of patches of bit of windows (that aren't there) and the real
windows aren't re-drawn but can still be interacted with - but only in
the area of the old smaller resolution. Using a shell in that area to
restart compiz (compiz --replace) gets things re-drawn and working again
for the whole increased resolution.

Increasing the resolution using metacity does not have this problem,

Using Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid amd64 architecture with Intel card on Lenovo
X301 notebook.

[Bug 326104] Re: [iG45] [Jaunty alpha3]Compiz issue: change to higher resolution cause distorted screen

2009-03-28 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
There are similar bug reports like this one for 8.04, and 8.10, e.g.
#249790.

The common thread appears to be compiz on an Intel card (so presumably
Intel X server). It could affect other combinations but the reports I've
seen have all been on Intel cards.

If *increasing* the resolution, compiz doesn't notice it, doesn't adjust
or redraw the screen. Workaround is to restart compiz after the change
('compiz --replace'), or switch to metacity when making the change.

If *decreasing* the resolution, compiz+X frequently - but not always -
crashes and logs you out. The workaround is to switch to metacity while
reducing the resolution, then switch back to compiz.

[Bug 326104] Re: [iG45] [Jaunty alpha3]Compiz issue: change to higher resolution cause distorted screen

2009-03-28 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
Not sure if this is the same thing but ATI users appear to be reporting
similar problems with compiz and resolution changes in both 8.04 Hardy
and 8.10 Intrepid, see #206998 and #205085. Again is these cases,
switching to metacity makes the problems go away. Not surprisingly,
patches to xrandr are implicated; so it might be versions of
xrandr+compiz that is the root bad combination rather than the
particular X server.

[Bug 326104] Re: [iG45] [Jaunty alpha3]Compiz issue: change to higher resolution cause distorted screen

2009-03-28 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
Found a collection of bug reports (#132065 and duplicates) going way
back where compiz also doesn't react if xrandr is use to rotate a screen
(e.g. for tablets). Again restarting compiz corrects things. Again
metacity notices the change and automatically adjusts.

Does this mean compiz is where a fix is needed? Since the problem always
involve compiz, occurs across multiple X servers, and since other
windows managers (metacity) play fine with xrandr?

[Bug 346140] [NEW] ldap connection failed / reason:emfile / ssl_esock issue

2009-03-20 Thread Aaron C. de Bruyn
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to the ejabberd package in universe (2.0.1-2~hardy1)

After running for a few days, I get this in my ejabberd.log:

=ERROR REPORT 2009-03-14 08:53:17 ===
W(0.364.0:eldap:566) : LDAP server closed the connection:
lv-server.smiles.local:636

W(0.278.0:eldap:566) : LDAP server closed the connection:
lv-server.smiles.local:636
In State: active

The next two lines repeat until I kill the ssl_esock process, then
things start working normally again:

=INFO REPORT 2009-03-14 08:57:17 ===
I(0.278.0:eldap:898) : LDAP connection on lv-server.smiles.local:636

E(0.278.0:eldap:915) : LDAP connection failed on lv-server.smiles.local:636
Reason: emfile

This appears to be due ssl_esock using up more and more connections when the
Windows AD/LDAP server closes the connection.
More and more sockets are used up, eventually they are unable to allocate more.

[Bug 320662] Re: [i855GM] jaunty xorg low graphic mode

2009-02-19 Thread Aaron C. de Bruyn
Same issue with the same hardware. (Fujitsu lifebook)

I used a workaround from
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=461829#c33 to fix the issue.

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
(If it's not there, run 'dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg')
Add to the Device section the following:
Option Legacy3D False

Save and reboot. X should start.

[Bug 314777] Re: Error:file is encrypted or is not a database

2009-02-17 Thread Aaron C. de Bruyn
Thanks for the pointer Alex--I wasn't sure what the problem was--but I
do know databases.

I compared the old database to a new one on a clean install. Apparently
it's not just sqlite2 vs sqlite3--there's also a table used by the new
version that must be created.

I have a quick work-around below--but the real solution would probably
for the gnome-rdp people to detect the database version and perform an
update from within gnome-rdp.

Workaround:
Make sure gnome-rdp is closed.
Open up a terminal and run the following commands:

killall gnome-rdp.exe
mv .gnome-rdp.db .gnome-rdp-backup.db
sqlite .gnome-rdp-backup.db .dump | sqlite3 .gnome-rdp.db
sqlite3 .gnome-rdp.db CREATE TABLE appOptions (name VARCHAR(300) PRIMARY KEY,
value VARCHAR(300));

An explanation:
The first line will make sure gnome-rdp is not running.

The next line moves the database named '.gnome-rdp.db' to '.gnome-rdp-
backup.db' because we need a backup in case there's something I missed,
so we can restore it later.

The third line tells the old sqlite 2.x to open the backup database and
dump out it's contents--then pipe it into the new sqlite3 database.

The last line tells sqlite3 to create a table called appOptions in the
database. This is apparently required by the newer version of gnome-
rdp.

[Bug 301189] Re: Vuze's updater will not upgrade to 4.0.0.4

2009-02-14 Thread Aaron Kelley
I'll respond to a couple points...

If Azureus simply provided a .deb at their website and you added that
manually to the package manger, would that also fail to update I
wonder.

Yes, it would fail to update, for the same reason. The update failure
is because Azureus/Vuze is installed in a location that users are not
allowed to write to. (I am not aware of any .deb, from the Ubuntu
repositories or not, that installs an application in a location or with
permissions that a user would be allowed to modify it. But, maybe such
a thing does exist.)

The ways that occur to me to fix this are...

 - As I've mentioned before, install Azureus/Vuze yourself in your home
directory. Then automatic updates will work fine.
 - Azureus/Vuze is made to be more Linux[/Ubuntu] aware and prompts for
credentials to run with elevated privileges so that it can update itself.
 - You go manually set permissions to be more relaxed, so that Azureus/Vuze can
update itself without elevated privileges.

Those second two I think are bad ideas, again, if you're using the
packaged version of an application, it shouldn't be updated by anything
besides the package manager, so that the package manager is aware of the
changes (and can possibly handle changed dependencies). Plus, I'm not
even sure if they'd even work, the packaged version may be installed in
a different manner than Vuze's updater expects. (I'm not aware of the
fine details here.)

Side note - if the Azureus folks were to provide a .deb file, it
wouldn't be a big leap from there to provide a Debian repository (and
just update it as new versions of Azureus are released), which you could
add to your list of repositories and solve this problem. However, I
don't know of any plans of them to offer this, I don't see it happening
in the near future, it's something you'd have to take up with them. :-)

This is not really just a problem with Vuze, but with any application with a
built-in updater. If you used a packaged version, you are relying on the
repository maintainers and package manager to keep you up to date. If you'd
like to keep yourself up to date or let the application to it itself, you've
got to install the application yourself...

[Bug 301189] Re: Vuze's updater will not upgrade to 4.0.0.4

2009-02-13 Thread Aaron Kelley
I don't think that the built in updater should be completely disabled in
the packaged version of Vuze. It simply should not check for updates to
Azureus/Vuze by default -- since that is the package manager's job (and
also, updates Vuze attempts to apply to itself will fail, which is the
reason for this problem). Of course, the built-in update manager is
useful for updating things like plug-ins that were installed through
their built-in plug-in management system.

I suggested installing Azureus in your home directory without using the
package manager not because that is the best solution, but that is what
you have to do if you want to use the most current version, as Vuze in
the repositories is not updated very often (4.x is not even in the
jaunty repos at the moment), and also, the built-in update manager will
actually work.

Using Vuze's auto updater with the packaged version is not a good idea.
The package manager will not be aware of updates to Vuze in this case,
extra files may be added with new versions that the package manager is
not aware of, dependencies may change, etc. When using the packaged
version, updates should come through the package manager.

The most ideal solutions to this situation are:
 - Vuze is updated more frequently in the repositories.
 - The Vuze folks run their own Debian repository that you can add to
sources.list to receive updates through the package manager. This way, new
versions can be made available immediately to users of the packaged version,
without relying on Ubuntu repository managers to get the update packaged and
available right away. (There are already a number of application writers that
make their applications available through their own repositories, so that
updates can be retrieved automatically by the package manager: VirtualBox,
Opera, Google Desktop/Picasa, MKVToolNix, Ubuntu Tweak, ).

[Bug 301189] Re: Vuze's updater will not upgrade to 4.0.0.4

2009-02-10 Thread Aaron Kelley
It can't update itself because, if Vuze is installed by the Ubuntu
package manager, it is installed system-wide and as a regular user, you
do not have permission to modify the executable. If Vuze tries to
update itself, it will not have permission, and fail. You may be able
to force it somehow, but that's not a good idea, because then the
version of Vuze that you have installed will be out of sync with the
version that the Ubuntu package manager thinks you have.

Choices are:
 - Download Vuze from their web site, drop it somewhere in your home directory,
and run it from there. It should be able to update itself fine.
 - Disable Vuze's automatic updates and rely on Ubuntu's update manager.
Updates will be fewer and far between, but you get a nice pre-packaged app that
gets installed for all users.

To solve this bug, I think that Vuze's built-in updater should be
disabled (if you are using the version installed via Ubuntu's package
manager), like it is with Firefox and some other apps. (However, Vuze
should still be able to automatically check for updates to plug-ins that
you have installed, because that works fine.)
