[Bug 506980] Re: Clipboard is broken. Gnome must include glipper by default

2010-02-09 Thread Michael Nagel
the thing is:
nobody wants backup. it sucks.
but many people want restore...

(nearly) nobody wants/needs a clipboard manager.
but many people want/expect a working implementation of copypaste -- and yes,
this includes pasting things copied from closed applications.

i agree with chris coulson -- glipper is not/no longer ready for prime time.
however there is klipper and there is parcellite. with some worl they would be
perfect for inclusion.

as suggested here: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/11334/comments/63
the thing should be at x-server-level but as this is a complicated/long-lasting
fix in the meantime a clipboard manager should be installed per default. i does
not have to have history management or a gui at all -- i would even prefer it
without one -- but it should make copy and paste just work. so a stripped
down version of parecellite with no irritating gui, a sensible way of dealing
with binary data, some minor fixes to applications like the gimp and things
would be very ok and we could focus on fixing it in x...

[Bug 506980] Re: Clipboard is broken. Gnome must include glipper by default

2010-02-09 Thread Michael Nagel
ps: this should probably be marked as duplicate of bug 11334 ...
maybe you should open a task against glipper / parcellite in that bug because
imho they are a final solution (affecting x and possibly LOTS of client
programs) is implemented...

[Bug 433817] Re: Gnome hang

2010-01-26 Thread Michael Nagel
hit me too.

workaround: switch to terminal (ctrl-shift-f1), log in, execute killall
gnome-panel, log out (ctrl-d), switch back to x (ctrl-shift-f7 per
default)

this should be reported upstreams

** Description changed:

I was dragging launchers between nautilus-desktop, gnome-panel and
gnome-do (Docky mode) when I got the error Drag and drop is not
supported. An invalid drag type was used.

I can still move the mouse pointer so it doesn't seem to be a kernel
panic. I can press caps lock and see the caps lock light come on, so
  basic I/O is still there.

The system isn't hung exactly, but nautilus-desktop and gnome-panel are
not responding at all to left, right and middle clicks. Neither is
gnome-do responding to clicks but it still does the dock zoom whenever
  I mouse over it.

The error dialog is still on the screen. I can't get rid of it. I can't
click the OK button, pressing Alt-O doesn't work either. The mouse
pointer is stuck in drag mode.

I have to restart X in order to make my desktop useable again.

i am by no means a moderator or something like that, but i think a centralized

for the sake of simplicity i will mark this report as invalid and ask you to
continue discussion at bug 85969 because marking it as duplicate is not
practicable with launchpad. i suggested this in comment #6
@ToFue: what you describe is not related to this error discussed here imho and

[Bug 364984] Re: couldn't install java docs

2009-12-24 Thread Michael Nagel
personally i would suggest to un-confirm this bug until there is a
precise description of how this is different from Bug 85969 mentioned by
Dominik and there is a explanation of how to reproduce this.

judging from the duplicates this seems to be exactly the aforementioned
bug and should be marked as duplicate thereof. or - because it is
cumbersome to move all the duplicates - we could mark it as invalid and
add a hint in the description to look there...

[Bug 500268] [NEW] performous does not include content (songs, ...)

2009-12-24 Thread Michael Nagel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: performous

performous does not include any game content (i.e. songs, ...) and is thus
quite unusable after installation.
there should be packages for at least the free songs listed at
http://performous.org/songs.html and these packages should be required or
recommended/suggested by performous.

the documentation concerning you first need to get some songs before
using performous should be improved!

[Bug 85969] Re: Java Docs Package Won't Install

2009-12-22 Thread Michael Nagel
it looks as if bug 364984 should be merged with this one as they
describe the same problem, imho.

however both reports have plenty of duplicates and launchpad does not
handle merging such bugs very well i think.

maybe one of you could have a look at this other bug and either mark it
as duplicate (or close it and redirect people here) or work out the
differences between the reports...

[Bug 193818] Re: Please update to latest 0.6

2009-07-02 Thread Michael Nagel
if i understand correctly, gnome-scan intends the following design:

the functional backend:
- libgnomescan

providing functionality for various frontends:
- flegita, a standalone program for scanning documents
- flegita-gimp, a gimp-plugin for tight integration with the gimp
- other frontend programs yet to come, including those from 3rd party developers

---

principally this might be a good packaging structure on the long run.
but right now, libgnomescan is not ready for it's intended use as a
basis for scanning applications because the api/abi is not considered
stable. it is thus not reasonable to package it as a library. i suggest
to include it with flegita.

the options for flegita-gimp are to either include it with flegita or to
make it a separate package. i prefer the first approach because it means
just one package. for one thing i recently learned that it is beneficial
to spare unnecessary packages and moreover the whole gnomescan thing
is just one product right now.

---

i suggest a single package. i'd call it gnomescan, because it is a
catchy name and established with the community. gnome-scan is
acceptable, too. however it causes some overhead with transitional
packages and has not been used in the wild yet. i could live with
flegita, but it is not catchy or descriptive. furthermore it is the name
of one part of the project only.

---

@Philipp: from a packaging point of view, is it ok to have one
gnomescan package bundling all the gnomescan stuff? is it an
advisable approach to do it as described above and split the package
when libgnomescan becomes stable and useful on it own? would you do the
packaging?

@Étienne: is this one-package-approach ok for you? can we call it
gnomescan? are we supposed to call it gnome-scan? or should it be named
flegita?

please comment timely, so work can start soon :)

[Bug 193818] Re: Please update to latest 0.6

2009-04-22 Thread Michael Nagel
probably it should.
and imho the complete changelog is unnecessary here.

and imho it is not possible to get this in jaunty any more but we should
ask a motu to get it in karmic as soon as packages can be uploaded
there. or even better get it in debian so it arrives there
automatically.

feel free to improve the report yourself.
