Re: [Bug 1068390] Re: pbuilder-dist dies when there is no development release

2014-04-16 Thread Scott Kitterman
On Thursday, April 17, 2014 02:20:28 you wrote:
This bug just came back, it is not fixed. Trigger appears to be the
date: as of about two hours ago it is 2014-04-17 UTC, which happens to
be the last release date listed in /usr/share/distro-info/ubuntu.csv.
So the distro_info library thinks there is no development release, and
 throws an exception when asked.

I think the correct fix for pbuilder-dist is just to catch the exception
and conclude that perhaps if there is no development release, we're not
trying to build for the development release, and just get on with the
 job.

Since this one is marked Fix Released, it'll work better if you file a new bug
suggesting that.

[Bug 1029155] Re: [seeded-in-ubuntu] should be clearer that it takes a source package

2012-07-26 Thread Scott Kitterman
I disagree with this solution. We don't put sources in seeds. We put
binaries.

I ought to be able to feed it a binary package and it should tell me if
any binaries from the source that builds that binary are seeded. It's
not that hard to to and it saves the developer from having to either
retry if they know the source package or go look it up if they don't.

Re: [Bug 1029155] Re: [seeded-in-ubuntu] should be clearer that it takes a source package

2012-07-26 Thread Scott Kitterman
The use case is when I'm thinking about if something is on an image, the
question is about a particular binary. The broader question I'm usually
trying to answer is can I upload this now which translates to are any of
the binaries from this source seeded.

Using source packages assume the developer has already done the mental
translation from a binary to a source and they don't always (as my bug report
indicates).

Re: [Bug 919805] Re: Please put dgetlp back - still needed

2012-01-22 Thread Scott Kitterman
I'd be surprised if I never pulled down a v3.0 format package with it, so I
suspect it does. It's been there for a very long time and was only removed on
the premise it was no longer needed. This isn't true and I'd appreciate it if
someone would just put it back where it was rather than engage in a long
bikeshed discussion about where it should best reside.

[Bug 567629] [NEW] update-maintainer should adjust Vcs-foo fields too

2010-04-20 Thread Scott Kitterman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-dev-tools

[21:08:43] ScottK Do we have any kind of policy that suggests one should
replace Vcs-foo fields in debian/control with XS-Debian-Vcs-foo fields?
[21:09:24] slangasek I'm not aware of a policy
[21:09:41] ScottK I'm wondering because the topgit upload in the queue has
such a change.
[21:10:04] ScottK It seems to me something we shouldn't just randomly do.
[21:10:15] slangasek I think it's good /practice/ to move the fields aside
when they don't point at something corresponding to the package in question
[21:10:33] ScottK Corresponding exactly or generally?
[21:10:38] slangasek but since there's no policy on the name to change it to,
and practice has varied, I always fail to do it myself
[21:10:50] slangasek ScottK: exactly, IMHO
[21:11:01] ScottK OK.
[21:11:11] slangasek if I can't find the current package revision in the
referenced Vcs-*, the field shouldn't be there
[21:11:41] ScottK Perhaps then update-maintainer should also remove such
fields.
[21:12:16] ajmitch it's something that's happened for awhile on some packages
[21:12:21] slangasek I think that would be good
[21:12:33] -*- ScottK makes a bug.
[21:12:56] slangasek it won't have the desired result for Vcs-Git if Debian
and Ubuntu share a git repository, but the Vcs-Git fields are inappropriately
underspecified anyway
[21:12:57] ajmitch I suspect it's done from a desire that 'apt-get source'
not give the wrong information

[Bug 511785] [NEW] Apparently simple control file merge failure

2010-01-23 Thread Scott Kitterman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bzr-builddeb

I'm currently working on merging quantlib from Debian. The initial bzr
merge-package lp:debian/squeeze/quantlib produced the usual
debian/changelog conflict, but also produced an odd control file
conflct. The conflict was the entire file. I separated and diffed the
two and it didn't seem that this should have been hard. The control
file as produced by bzr merge-package and a diff of the two parts of it
are (will be) attached.

[Bug 510312] [NEW] bzr builddeb takes tarball from upstream when it should use Debian

2010-01-20 Thread Scott Kitterman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bzr-builddeb

Just trying to merge unbound from sid and when I built the package for
the first time, I got:

$ bzr builddeb -S -- -sa -us -uc
Building using working tree

Looking for a way to retrieve the upstream tarball

Using apt to look for the upstream tarball.

apt could not find the needed tarball.

It won't matter in this case, but sometimes there is more than one
source for a tarball and they aren't always md5sum identical (this seems
common for Perl modules on CPAN for some reason). It is important to
have an md5sum matched tarball from Debian, so in case like this, bzr
builddep should prefer the tarball from Debian.

[Bug 510338] [NEW] bzr builddeb should warn about unadded files

2010-01-20 Thread Scott Kitterman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bzr-builddeb

In my continuing experimentation with UDD merging, I just spent far to
long discovering that bzr builddeb silently ignores files which are in
the package, but not added to bzr.

In my particular case, I had added a new patch and even though I could
push and pop the patch just fine, lintian (rightfully) complained it was
missing.

I think it is reasonable for a user to assume that what will be used to
build the package is what's in the local directory. It's equally
reasonable for bzr builddep to only use what's in bzr. Where these two
expectations diverge, some kind of warning is in order.

[Bug 510521] [NEW] Please remove sagemath source and binary from lucid

2010-01-20 Thread Scott Kitterman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sagemath

The current sagemath is unbuildable due both to boost1.38 removal and
lack of python2.5 as a supported Python in Lucid.

The boost problem is solvable, but the python2.5 one is not (directly
build-depending on python2.5 does not help).

This package has never made it into Debian Testing and it does not
appear it will be in Squeeze. It should be removed without blacklist in
case it does get fixed.

2010-01-14 Thread Scott Kitterman
Public bug reported:

This package is FTBFS with boost1.40 (and thus will block removal of
1.38). It is sufficiently unmaintained in Debian that it has never made
it into Testing. It has no rdepends.

[Bug 478219] Re: libgtk1.2 missing on karmic

2010-01-10 Thread Scott Kitterman
For the people that want gtk1.2, your best bet is to work together to
maintain it in a PPA. It was quite deliberately removed from Debian and
Ubuntu because it's no longer supportable. The last gtk1.2 was a very
long time ago. Certainly no more recently than 2002:
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/sources/gtk+/1.2/ See
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=520441 for additional
details.

A number of people are also unhappy about the libstdc++5 removal.
That's not coming back either.

Re: [Bug 431091] Re: libstdc++5 removal breaks non-ubuntu applications

2010-01-05 Thread Scott Kitterman
The arrogance is the other way around. Ubuntu universe is community
maintained by volunteers. None appear to be interested in maintaining
gcc 3.3. We volunteer to make Ubuntu better and our collective judgment
is that gcc 3.3 is too old to be maintainable.

Personally, I find the demanding tone from some in this bug very
offputting. Ubuntu is culturally a do-acracy. People who do stuff
decide about it. Nothing prevents people who want this back in the
archive from getting involved in Ubuntu development and getting it back.
The best response to this concern so far is the person that put it in a
PPA.

Arguing in this bug is extremely unlikely to change things.

invalid. The wontfix is a realistic assessment of what is likely to

[Bug 492931] Re: MIR for libssh

2009-12-31 Thread Scott Kitterman
@Kees: FYI, the commenter is upstream for both libssh and kio_sftp. All
the GUI SFTP capability in KDE rests on kio_sftp and we certainly don't
have the resources in the Kubuntu team to port to a different libssh, so
I hope you'll be able to support this.

[Bug 499684] [NEW] Interface to dpkg-buildpackage inconsistent and not well documented

2009-12-22 Thread Scott Kitterman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bzr-builddeb

While attempting to do a merge, I went astray because I (incorrectly)
inferred from the fact that the -S flag builds a source package only,
other dpkg-buildpackage options would work too. For merges, -v (from
dpkg-buildpackage) is always required, but (as I now know) -S -v means
something completely different. I learned from asking (this does not
appear to be in the bzr help) that there is a -- switch to pass
additional options.

Having some dpkg-buildpackage options be directly accessible and some
that have to be accessed via a switch is inconsistent and (for me)
confusing. Ideally, much like debuild, this script would wrap the
standard options normally used to build packages. Of course at this
point, that would require existing options to change their meaning, so
it might be better just to do bzr builddep [bzr builddeb options] --
[dpkg-buildpakcage options] so the interface is at least consistent.
