[Bug 335512] Re: [i945] intel video card automatically detected on live cd, but not on the installed system
We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help. It seems likely to me this bug is gone; the -intel driver has improved immensely in Karmic and a lot of bugs are being reported as no longer present. So hopefully that's the case here too. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- [i945] intel video card automatically detected on live cd, but not on the installed system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335512 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs -- universe-bugs mailing list universe-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/universe-bugs
[Bug 335512] Re: [i945] intel video card automatically detected on live cd, but not on the installed system
[This is an automatic notification.] A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic. This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know whether it resolves the issue you reported. Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a problem? CD ISO images are available here: http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will be able to forward the bug upstream. Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as well. In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test Karmic, please report those as new bug reports. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = New ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- [i945] intel video card automatically detected on live cd, but not on the installed system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335512 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs -- universe-bugs mailing list universe-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/universe-bugs

Re: [Bug 335512] Re: [i945] intel video card automatically detected on live cd, but not on the installed system
Sorry, cdir, the short answer to most of these questions is I don't know. There is probably a log of the installation somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it. There used to be some useful information in /var/log/installer, but after the security hole a while back where the password of the first created user was logged for everyone to see, it looks like it has been removed. I don't know the details of this. The reason that `dpkg -phigh xserver-xorg-video-intel` resets the driver to vesa is that it is registred in the debconf database. I know next to nothing about debconf, but it should be possible to reset that value somehow if you wish to (or unsetting is which is probably what you want to do here). I knew absolutely nothing about it before researching this issue, so you may learn a bit if you read up a bit, starting with `man 7 debconf`. and can you help me to know where i can see the intel driver list compatibility and recomendation for each card? there are a few drivers that could be working? where can i see the diferences betwen them? I think there's only the intel driver and the vesa driver. Your chipset (GM45) is so new that there are still quite a number of bugs in the intel driver. The vesa driver is generic and do not use any special features of the graphics cards. It does not use any of the hardware acceleration that is available (this is why it always works). -- [i945] intel video card automatically detected on live cd, but not on the installed system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335512 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs -- universe-bugs mailing list universe-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/universe-bugs

thanks Geir for your atention ... is there any way to check your theory about intel driver crash during install? any original log to look at? it seems that in the reporter case, it is a different video card, the problem solved whithout any change ... but the reconfigure test makes me think that there may be another problem, because there is no crash during that operation that can explain that the vesa configuration mantains ... is there any test you suggest to get more info about it? and can you help me to know where i can see the intel driver list compatibility and recomendation for each card? there are a few drivers that could be working? where can i see the diferences betwen them?

** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel I installed jaunty-alpha-5 on a laptop with an intel video card. On the live cd the driver was detected properly and I had Visual Effects enabled. I installed it on the hard drive, but after booting up: * I had no 3D acceleration (Visual Effects was disabled), * I was stuck in with low resolution * I could choose just between 1024x768 and 800x600, IIRC. * the monitor was not recognized The driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf was vesa. I replaced vesa with intel, saved the file and restarted gdm (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart). After gdb restarted: * I had 3D acceleration (Visual Effects was activated), * I had a better resolution (the native resolution for my monitor) * I could select between multiple resolutions * the monitor was recognized as Laptop 15'' I expected to see intel in /etc/X11/xorg.conf if it was properly detected by the Live CD. xserver-xorg-video-intel: Installed: 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu3 Candidate: 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu3 Version table: *** 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu3 0 500 http://ro.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04 Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu3 ProcEnviron: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersion: Linux version 2.6.28-8-generic (bui...@rothera) (gcc version 4.3.3 (Ubuntu 4.3.3-3ubuntu5) ) #26-Ubuntu SMP Wed Feb 25 04:28:54 UTC 2009 SourcePackage: xserver-xorg-video-intel Uname: Linux 2.6.28-8-generic i686 + + [lspci] + 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML and 945GT Express Memory Controller Hub [8086:27a0] (rev 03) + Subsystem: Lenovo Device [17aa:2061] + 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27a2] (rev 03) + Subsystem: Lenovo Device [17aa:2062] -- [i945] intel video card automatically detected on live cd, but not on the installed system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335512 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs -- universe-bugs mailing list universe-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/universe-bugs

I ran the two tests and this is what happened: 1. I removed the driver line from xorg.conf and after logging out /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows that I am using the intel driver. Re: [Bug 335512] Re: [i945] intel video card automatically detected on live cd, but not on the installed system
2. I renamed /etc/X11/xorg.conf and after logging out there was no new xorg.conf created, still all works well. This seems to have changed from the the xorg-server in intrepid, but that is not a problem. The previous version would create a minimalistic xorg.conf if none existed. After removing the xorg.conf, try to run `sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg`. This should create a new minimalistic xorg.conf (I tested this). On my computer (965GM graphics chipset) this gives no Driver line in the Device section. If you get a Driver line there, it is a configuration issue with the xserver-xorg package. If not, it is the ubiquity installer or some other xorg-related package.

[Bug 335512] Re: [i945] intel video card automatically detected on live cd, but not on the installed system
Thank you for reporting this bug and finding out that the problem was the Driver line in xorg.conf. My expectation would be that after the installation, there would be no Driver line at all. The ubuntu installation apparently adds this extra line, which probably shouldn't be there. Can you do two tests to verify that Xorg itself is doing what it is supposed to? 1. Remove the Driver line from xorg.conf, log out and in again and verify that /var/log/Xorg.0.log now reports that you are using the intel driver (and everything else works as expected). 2. Rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf to something else and verify that when you log out and in again, a new xorg.conf is created which looks like the one you have, but without the Driver line. My guess this bug really belongs with Ubiquity, but please do this tests before we reassign.
