Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Hibernate/Suspend ubuntu when server not being used?
It goes to sleep ok, but when it wakes it asks for my password, are there any ways to work around that? Are there any BIOS settings I should be aware of? -- cybervision_ cybervision_'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13023 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61504 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

In the 3rd-party plugins thread, there is one about srvPowerControl (rarely goes past the first page.) This plugin monitors squeezecenter usage and sends sleep commands. It does much more but that's the basic idea. As long as your server is wired, and the server is able to wake from sleep, the Transporter will wake the server when you press power on the remote. If you do sleep-to-ram, then the Transporter will be operational within a few seconds (say 3 to 10 max). If you do sleep-to-disk, then it will take a lot more; sleep-to-disk is somehow interesting in windows as it accelerates the boot. Power saving settings vary from one motherboard to the other, and also depend on the OS version... So the idea is to get your ubuntu machine running, sleeping and waking up ok (since this is a recent motherboard, that should be possible, probably easy.) >From there, you'll be able to give the right parameters for the plugin to sleep the machine when the Transporter is idle. -- epoch1970 epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61504 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
[SlimDevices: Unix] Hibernate/Suspend ubuntu when server not being used?
I have set up a server with Ubuntu on it and it will be feeding Transporter via ethernet. I want to be able to have it powered on 24/7, but how can I make it so that when not used for say 30 minutes it will hibernate or suspend to save power, wear on the hd and so on. And when I use the Transporter again it can WoL? My motherboard is an Asus G31-based-type. -- cybervision_ cybervision_'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13023 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61504 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

[SlimDevices: Unix] SC won't scan library
Ok, I have setup my new PC with Ubuntu, installed Squeezecenter, set networking up with static IP, it is hooked up to Transporter with a switch in between. I connect to the Transporter and can do anything in the interface on ubuntu with SC, but it just won't scan my library and find the files I've put there. It says "Scan Complete 00:00:00". The folder holding the music is put under the "folder" with my user name. -- cybervision_ cybervision_'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13023 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61502 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Also, to be clear, the desired router would be a WRT54GL, not a WRT54G. The extra 'L' stands for "Linux" and is capable of being flashed with some very good third party firmware. -- cooppw02 cooppw02's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16712 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61444 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Which Linux-dist. and how to...?
Well, if the SB can connect to the neighbor's wireless, just putting a wifi card in the server should work. However, this would create 2 wireless hops between the server and the SB, which can create some performance issues. Another potential option would be to put a wifi card in the server, and use it to connect to the neighbors wireless, and also create an ad-hoc wireless network for the SB to connect to. The advantage to this approach is that I think you'd have just one wireless hop between the server and the SB. The disadvantage is that most people don't bother with ad-hoc wireless networking (I've never done this), and this could be messy to impossible to configure. The reason I think this might be possible is that when I use my laptop (configured with Ubuntu 8.10) on my wireless network, the NetworkManager applet on my laptop gives me an option to "Create New Wireless Network...". If both your SB and your server can be wired to the same box, a final option would be to use a WRT54GL (flashed with DD-WRT etc.) to create a wireless bridge. Here, you would connect both the SB and the server to the device, and associate it with the wireless network. For this option, you may need access to configure your neighbors router. I've never done this either (though I do plan on doing it in a few months), and I'm not sure if this configuration can yield zero wireless hops between the server and the SB. -- cooppw02 cooppw02's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16712 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61444 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
