Why not install a basic linux version. Either ubuntu or debian will be fine. Run the installer from the CD, select only basic system or even nothing when asked and thereafter install SC with apt-get install squeezecenter. It installs all you need. As posted, already tried that, it killed my system with nothing running. CPU was around 50%. I assume the -retry is a typo as it should be --retry.
