Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Squeezebox on Mint Debian 1 (3.0.0)

2011-11-16 Thread cliver

For what it's worth, I have just installed vortexbox on an old dell
desktop and it worked out of the box didn't need any Linux skills.
Still playing but I'm pretty much sold already :-)

Sadly the discs on my old desktop are far too small, and buying new
discs for such an old IDE_based system (2003) that might fail soon for
other reasons doesn't seem like a sound investment. I have USB discs
but was given the impression that they wouldn't work too well as
primary (as opposed to backup) drives.

[SlimDevices: Unix] Where is squeezeplay for xubuntu

2011-11-16 Thread bert1e

Hi

I am looking for squeezeplay.deb for xubuntu and I just cant seem to
find it. I checked the nightly folders and it just shows a windows and
mac version. I tried adding the debian repositry
http://debian.slimdevices.com stable main and seeing if I could see it
in Synaptic but no joy.

Thanks for your help

I picked up a used Dell desktop on ebay for 30 quid. It has a SATA
interface 1GB RAM and P4 chip. I just happened to have a 1TB drive
going begging which I popped into it and bingo :-)
Try looking around the vortex box documentation and forums. I think you
may be able to get your USB drives working http://vortexbox.org/

yes, usb drives are not plug and play but there are a few commands
that allow one to mount usb drives in vortexbox environoment. search
the vortexbox forums.

Really? They are no longer maintaining the Linux repositories?

Umm, what's up with that?

Lets hope they don't continue down that road. I have spent 1000s on
Logitech equipment and this is just making it harder for me to keep
myself updated...

It would explain why it hasn't updated automatically recently... what a
pain in the a%$e.

Cheers

[SlimDevices: Unix] rsync advice

2011-11-16 Thread Mnyb

I recently discovered rsync as I needed a more automated backup solution
.

I'm in the midst of doing my first real backup so I've found
settings/options that I liked .

However for my incremental backups in the future .

What are god options to use ?

Provided that .

1. I do (small) tag updates without changing the modified time of the
file .
2. Every modified file must be found and backupped

Check out rsnapshot: it's a wrapper around rsync which takes care of the
several generations of changes you want to maintain.

2011-11-16 Thread epoch1970

You could also consider a very large wrapper around rsync such as
backuppc (look for it on sourceforge.net). I've been using it for a
long time, IMHO this is a quality software package with tons of useful
options and reliable operation.

Yes, they are maintaining the Linux repositories. It's just the name of
the software that has changed.
