Just to be sure, can you clarify what you see on the screen on
rebooting? Does it look like 'shutdown' messages, or 'startup'
messages?

Last message before heading off to work!

I can confirm the following:

1. The sbpd-script.sh script runs fine on the command line as user tc,
no need to run it as sudo
2. With /home/tc/sbpd-script.sh entered in the User Commands in Tweaks,
on rebooting, the Pi doesn't reach Jivelite.
3. With no user command defined in Tweaks, the Pi boots to Jivelite.
Buttons don't work, until I run /home/tc/sbpd-script.sh on the command
line, then everything is fine. All button presses work as expected.

I already use Filezilla, but haven't done so for the Pi.

I'll play some more this evening. Thanks for all the effort on this -
frustrating that it is so close!

Thanks for persevering. OK, so there's evidently something real here,
but it's odd that I can't reproduce it with either of my Pirate Audio
boards, or on two different RPis. If the Y button is responding with my
script loaded, then you must have the pre-Jan 23rd version. And if you
can get Jivelite and the buttons working simply by running the sbpd
script after Jivelite has started, then that would seem to rule out
possible errors in the script.*

I think you've mentioned in the past that your RPi sits at the
'Requesting system poweroff' screen, without ever launching Jivelite.
But that screen is part of the shutdown process, not the boot process,
so can you clarify whether you do in fact see the RPi booting up again?
Do you see the boot up messages on screen, including this header?:

Code:

 _ _ ___ __
  ___ (_) ___/__ ___ / _ \/ /__ ___ _
  / _ \/ / /__/ _ \/ __/ -_) ___/ / _ `/ // / -_) __/
  / .__/_/\___/\___/_/ \__/_/ /_/\_,_/\_, /\__/_/
  /_/ /___/

If you do, then perhaps we should be looking into the log file to see
what's happening at boot to prevent Jivelite from loading. You can turn
on all logging with Ralphy's instructions 'here'
Jivelite.log can then be found in /var/log/. If it's booting but not
launching Jivelite at all, then I guess that file might not be created,
or might be empty, in which case the log files in the Diagnostics
section of pCP might help.

* By the way, if you're using a Mac, I can recommend FileZilla as a way
to access the RPi - it gives you a graphical interface to transfer
files. And if you also install TextWrangler you can set up FileZilla to
use TextWrangler as the default editor. This allows you to right-click
in a folder on the RPi to create a new blank file, then right-click on
that new file in order to View/Edit it, and it will load into
TextWrangler. You can then paste the script in, and there should be no
formatting differences.

I can't see anything obvious written in the card, but I might have to
disassemble the device to have a look. The Y button operates as
specified in your script file.

I ran through your latest instructions twice yesterday evening, always
with the same result: if I place the sbpd-script.sh command in the User
Commands, the Pi won't boot to Jivelite. The only deviation was to
install nano, which is my preferred editor.

I need to boot without the User Command to reach Jivelite, then run sudo
/home/tc/sbpd-script.sh & in a terminal to get Jivelite to respond to
the buttons. If I run the command in a terminal as user tc, it throws an
error and the buttons remain inoperable.

I'm accessing the pi via ssh using Terminal on a Mac, logging in as user
tc. I pasted your script into the file using nano - this did need some
reformatting, so maybe there's an error I didn't note.

If you want to completely eliminate the brightness controls (e.g. the
brightness call on boot or restart), you can simply remove or rename
/home/tc/lcd-brightness.sh - that way Jivelite will not be able to call
the 'pigs' utility.

Nothing - Jivelite only interacts with the brightness control if you
attempt to change the brightness. Actually, that's not quite correct -
on first boot it attempts to set the display to maximum brightness, and
whenever you reboot or restart Jivelite it attempts to restore the
previous brightness. But between those calls, the brightness control
isn't doing anything. I believe that if there's any implication, it
exists simply because the board is expecting to control the backlight by
PWM.

But I'm not at all convinced that this is the issue. I have just run
through my complete installation process on a 3A+, using the '3W amp'
pirate board. It's absolutely flawless - there's no sluggishness in the
pCP web interface, and it reliably shows the HiFiBerry as the installed
sound device. I have it running in perfect sync with my 'line out'
version running on the Zero W.

I am using a Raspberry Pi 3B+.
I am not using the 4 buttons as I am currently controlling the LMS from

The crackling sound (?) that was mentioned earlier has for me always
something to do with the Squeezelite settings, especially the ALSA

Thank you for the very quick and helpful answer.

Chill, let's eliminate the PWM by disabling the dimming feature, and
switch to an ON/Off mode or a while.
If we can get it stable without, we at least have got a clear indication
what is causing the issue.
The dimming is wonderful, but we can live without, especially in this

I'm trying to understand the implications of this. I found I had to add
the '-t 0' option to pigpiod, to switch it to PWM mode, otherwise the
sound did not work. So by implication this board uses PCM for audio,
and PWM for backlight control. So does this mean that trying to also
use PWM for pigpiod is what could be causing the possible sluggishness
in pCP's Squeezelite page and the problems that M-H and Grumpy Bob seem
to be experiencing?

These problems were apparent before the skin and other applets were
adapted to control the backlight, so presumably it's just the fact that
the board uses PWM for the backlight that may be the issue - it doesn't
matter whether we attempt to actually adjust the backlight?

If this is the case, is there a possibility to make pigpiod more
compatible with this board, perhaps by reducing the polling frequency
(in case it's not obvious, I'm on dodgy ground here, so I'm just
guessing).

That's great - so you're not experiencing the problems that M-H and
Grumpy Bob have reported? What RPi are you running on?

You can rotate the display by modifying one of the the initialisation
variables in the framebuffer setup.

It's the second parameter in the long list of hexadecimal values:
-1,0x36,0x00
Change this to -1,0x36,0x60 and you'll rotate the screen 90 degrees
clockwise. I've been experimenting with different values for this
parameter, but I haven't been able to rotate it by any other amount.
I've managed to mirror the display, and use part of the screen for an
upside down window, but a 90 degree rotation is the only 'clean' option
I've found.

So the revised modprobe commands are:

Code:

modprobe flexfb setaddrwin=0 width=240 height=240
init=-1,0x11,-2,120,-1,0x36,0x60,-1,0x3A,0x05,-1,0xB2,0x0C,0x0C,0x00,0x33,0x33,-1,0xB7,0x35,-1,0xBB,0x1A,-1,0xC0,0x2C,-1,0xC2,0x01,-1,0xC3,0x0B,-1,0xC4,0x20,-1,0xC6,0x0F,-1,0xD0,0xA4,0xA1,-1,0x21,-1,0xE0,0x00,0x19,0x1E,0x0A,0x09,0x15,0x3D,0x44,0x51,0x12,0x03,0x00,0x3F,0x3F,-1,0xE1,0x00,0x18,0x1E,0x0A,0x09,0x25,0x3F,0x43,0x52,0x33,0x03,0x00,0x3F,0x3F,-1,0x29,-3

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Jivelite breaks playlist - Squeezeplay gives a choice - need help

2020-01-26 Thread lj502

Thanks for the response, I am using in windows 10 and XP,

SqueezePlay-setup-7.8.0r1188

jivelite-lua-0.1-r189-win32

Logitech Media Server Version: 7.9.2

I'm not sure about Luajit?

The main issue is in Jivelite when you make a song selection it just
plays unless you hold down (long press?) and then you get the popup with
options to select (play now, play next, add to end) I want to select a
song (click, touch) and default to the popup with choices (Squeezeplay
does this). Having to let someone know to hold down a song selection
until the popup is activated just doesn't work well, someone always just
kills the playlist with one song.

I really don't need to port the Grid skin to Squeezeplay if Jivelite
could select the same way Squeezeplay does, having the Grid skins in
Squeezeplay would be great also though but not necessary if its
trouble.

I hope this makes sense and thanks again,

John

This is odd too - again, I'm not seeing this. I have it an autostart
tweak, and Jivelite starts with no problem.

I can second that. I saw that too.

Now on the brand new zero-w with actually no real differences.
But the starting moment of "/home/tc/sbpd-script.sh" seems to have
impact.
It does interfere with jivelite being able to start a display.
So laving it from the tweak autostart lines, and manualy adding it on
the SSH CLI does help

With the new setup I can also see it blanks the HDMI output, when spi
display starts.

My rig is not 100% the same as Chill, So what Pi are you using ?
I can start an other SD and do *exact* the same.
My steps always started with an empty netusb file in the boot partition
to allow a hub/nic to add wired networking to the zero, and then I
manually configure the wifi and reboot without wired network.
So this does 'pollute' the setup with some extra modules, and it aso
does take up time testing during the next boot.

Ah, got it. I reverted my manual changes to config.txt, rebooted, then
disabled the audio via the card control page. I rebooted again, but it

The jivelite grid skin will not work with squeezeplay unless you modify
the C code jive framework files.

If you provide;

1. the versions of squeezeplay and jivelite used
2. is jivelite running luajit or lua 5.1
3. the os running them
4. lms version
5. the steps to reproduce the issue

I might be able to help.

Not exact as from memory but;
top showed about 85 to 75 processor time free.
Usage = 11% squeezelitelite while playing + about 10 percent for SBPD
and or jivelite.
But since it is polling buttons and serially outputting an animated
screen, I though it to be somewhat normal for such a small processor.

Thanks Paul. The biggest item is the GPIO daemon pigpiod, at about
8-10% CPU. Jivelite is next on 5-7%, and Squeezelite on about 5%.
There's nothing else significant, and the total is less than ~25%.

Maybe I'm just too used to my RPi4. I'll try the Zero W with a more
basic USB audio setup and without the Pirate Audio board.

Strange, I'm not seeing that with either of the boards I have - both are

The slowness I'm seeing is in the pCP web interface. Jivelite seems
quite snappy. I get the splash screen about 5 seconds after Squeezelite
starts up, and then the full Jivelite menu page about 5 or 6 seconds
after that.

It'll be interesting to see whether either of these issues resolves with
your new Zero W.

I've also just ordered a non-W version for experimenting with.

To see if sluggishness is due to the machine running out of computing
power you could run "top" from ssh session ("q" to quit "top") and take
a look at the top few lines of the updating output to see if there are
clues.

Hi Chill,
There is likely a bit of difference in the boards that needs attention
on the SW side.
With a bit more attention to the music rather than the working of
display and buttons, I found the 3W version does not output sound
properly using either the generic TI5102 and the HiFiBerry DAC
Zero/MiniAMP driver.
Left channel does output normally, however the right channel does output
at a lower level, and does output content for left channel too.
Is if the right channel is in mono mode and adding the 2 signals
together. I tested this with a few right-left test files.
I did verify the bottom side slide switch is in the stereo ( dual
speaker ) mode.
I do not know what DAC is used on this card , as I need microscopic
photography to read the chips. But it looks like they used 2 separate
driver chips, and perhaps 2 separate dacs built in to them. Perhaps the
HW switch needs software support in the driver.
As I don't own an other pirate radio version, I can't verify much in
that range.
But I swapped to the Phat Beat in place ( same pi, same SD ) Then there
are no issue's and with both driver sets.

Your reported slowness on the display is observed too. About 60 seconds
into the first song, the display starts jivelite.

The observed instability is most likely a connection issue, They always
happen when I handled the set. But with working display and buttons I
saw the red WIFI icon appear in te lower right corner, and I still could
navigate to the settings-extra-picoreplayer-reboot command, and it
restored everything.
I will solder a header, and move to a zero W to get rid of the external
dongle, and issue ( hopefully )

Strike that - swapping back to the 'line out' version (but keeping the
same SD card), I'm seeing the same sluggishness in the pCP Squeezelite
page, and the same tendency for the output device to show Analog and
give me only a truncated list of devices to choose from. So no evidence
of any difference between the boards. Maybe the slow Pi Zero is
relevant here.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer6.0.0 - PI4 support

2020-01-26 Thread Zabizabo

Hi everyone,

First, I would like to aknowledge the developers for this wonderful OS
that is piCorePlayer.

I just have bought a RPi 4 1 Gb to work with my Allo digione card and it
works like a charm with the pCP 6.0 beta 7. I'm coming from a RPi 3B and
I wanted to make my audio server runs smoothly and RPi 4 is really
improving the reactivity.

Just my two cents.

Have a nice day all :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Jivelite on a Pirate Audio 240x240 screen

2020-01-26 Thread chill

I ran through the installation on the '3W amp' board, and it's working
as expected, with Jivelite, button control and the correct sound card
loaded. But

There IS an apparent difference from the line out card, in that some of
the pCP menus are more sluggish, especially the Sqeezelite page. Even
though I've set the sound output device to the HiFiBerry DAC
Zero/MiniAMP, and sound is coming from the attached speakers, the
Squeezelite page sometimes loads very slowly, and sometimes shows
'Analog' as the output device, with only a truncated list of output
devices to choose from. The 'Change Squeezelite settings' section below
the main output device section shows 'hw:CARD=sndrpihifiberry' in the
output setting.

So maybe there is a hardware difference with this version of the card.

But I don't get any difference in this behaviour whether sbpd-script.sh
is running or not. In either case the board is fully functional. So in
case there are any misunderstandings, here are the exact steps that I've
followed with both boards:

Put a fresh pcp6-b7 image on the SD card.

Whilst the SD card is still in the laptop:
Enter wifi credentials in wpa_supplicant.conf.sample and save as
wpa_supplicant.conf

Add these parameters to the end of cmdline.txt

Code:

fbcon=map:10 fbcon=font:VGA8x16

Boot the RPi from this SD card.

The default file system is 64mb, so for this basic setup it is not
necessary to resize the FS - I have about 7mb to spare after this setup.

Add these commands to /opt/bootlocal.sh to set up the framebuffer

Code:

  modprobe flexfb setaddrwin=0 width=240 height=240
init=-1,0x11,-2,120,-1,0x36,0x00,-1,0x3A,0x05,-1,0xB2,0x0C,0x0C,0x00,0x33,0x33,-1,0xB7,0x35,-1,0xBB,0x1A,-1,0xC0,0x2C,-1,0xC2,0x01,-1,0xC3,0x0B,-1,0xC4,0x20,-1,0xC6,0x0F,-1,0xD0,0xA4,0xA1,-1,0x21,-1,0xE0,0x00,0x19,0x1E,0x0A,0x09,0x15,0x3D,0x44,0x51,0x12,0x03,0x00,0x3F,0x3F,-1,0xE1,0x00,0x18,0x1E,0x0A,0x09,0x25,0x3F,0x43,0x52,0x33,0x03,0x00,0x3F,0x3F,-1,0x29,-3
  modprobe fbtft_device name=flexfb speed=3200 cs=1 gpios=dc:9

Add these variables to /usr/local/etc/pcp/pcp.cfg

Code:

  JL_FRAME_BUFFER="/dev/fb1"
  JL_FRAME_RATE=""
  JL_FRAME_DEPTH=""

Load the pcp-jivelite_default-qvga240squareskin.tcz extension

Install Jivelite from the Tweaks page (this step includes an automatic
backup, so accept the reboot prompt.)

Screen should show console messages during boot, then piCorePlayer
splash screen, then Jivelite ‘Choose Language’.

install pcp-sbpd.tcz

Make a /home/tc/sbpd-script.sh with the 'content shown above'

Make /home/tc/sbpd-script.sh executable: chmod +x
/home/tc/sbpd-script.sh

Add /home/tc/sbpd-script.sh to user commands, then save (this step
includes an automatic backup, so go to main page and reboot).

Follow 'Raplhy’s instructions'
to get lcd-brightness.sh

Backup and Reboot

Jivelite should be fully functional now, including navigation with the
four buttons.

Set up the Squeezelite output device, e.g. to 'HiFiBerry DAC
Zero/MiniAMP'

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Jivelite on a Pirate Audio 240x240 screen

2020-01-26 Thread chill

I just ran through the install process again, from the top, and haven't
encountered the problem that Grumpy Bob and M-H have reported. I used
the 'line out' version of the Pirate Audio board. I'm about to try the
steps again on the '3W amp' version in case there's something different.
I'm not going to add to the confusion by posting the steps again, until
I've checked that they work on the 3W amp board.

The brightness controls now seem to work as they did on my own
development version - thanks Ralphy. A few points to note:
1) The Display Off screensaver is implemented (Settings > Screen >
Screensavers > When playing/stopped/off > Display Off)
2) The brightness control 'when on' is implemented (Settings >
piCorePlayer > Adjust Display Backlight Brightness).
3) The brightness control 'when off' is NOT yet implemented (Settings >
piCorePlayer > Adjust Display Backlight Brightness when Powered Off).
Because these settings labels are quite long and the screen is narrow,
both of these settings look the same in the menu until you let them
scroll across the screen. The one that IS implemented is the 4th menu
item in the piCorePlayer applet, and the one that is NOT implemented is
the 5th one.
4) The screen brightness is only recalled at the next boot if you do a
backup before rebooting.
