Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Perfect music companion for trip to the cabin
. We have a cabin and I use the Touch out of my Expedition with a 2TB Toshiba USB powered hard drive full of FLAC. I use the Touch built-in mini server plus I keep an old WiFi Router at the cabin so I can use iPeng to control everything. We have a pair of AudioEngine A5+ powered speakers we take when we need music at the cabin, at a picnic, working outside, or where a standard stereo system isn't available. More audio then a Boom with just a little over two times the size. More expensive then a Boom, but a Touch, RPi, and AudioEngine A5+ speakers makes a great portable system to replace a dead Boom. In fact, if one builds an RPi with a touch screen and installs a HiFiBerry Amp, then all one needs is a pair of speakers to replace the Boom. *iPhone* Media Room: ModWright Platinum Signature Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Wood Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1, Vandersteen V2W Subwoofer Living Room: Transporter, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Office: Touch with Vandersteen VSM-1s Kitchen: Touch in-wall mount w/ Thiel Powerpoint 1.2s Bedroom: Squeezebox BOOM Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Around the House: SliMP3, SB1, SB2, SB3 Ford Thunderbird: SB Touch, USB drive Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109129 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Welcome to the Forum. A couple of quick questions so we can get some additional information to see if the Forum can help. What version Raspberry Pi do you have? Do you know the IP Address of the Raspberry Pi? When you say you can't get to the PiCorePlayer GUI are you referring to the web based GUI or thinking there is a GUI on the 7 inch Touch Display? Note: The RPi will appear to be hung showing the error you see on the 7 Inch display until you use the GUI to setup how you wish PiCorePlayer to look and operate. Until you have done this and saved the setting, I highly recommend that you stay connected via Ethernet and set up WiFi as the very last step. To get to the PiCorePlayer GUI, attach an Ethernet cable from your network, reboot, when the boot completes, check your router to obtain the IP Address of the RPi, type the IP Address into a network connected web browser and the GUI should come up. Using the GUI, setup your PiCorePlayer. Select the Hat you are using and save it. Start SqueezeLite and save it. Then go through the Advanced setting to select how you wish your 7 inch display to look. There is a great How-To on having the display mimic a Squeezebox Touch on one of the Forums, I believe it was in a discussion about the great looking Analog VU meters that are available (I will look for it over the Holiday if nobody chimes in with it). Hope this helps get you started and on your way to the GUI and setting up your RPI player they way you want it to look. *iPhone* Media Room: ModWright Platinum Signature Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Wood Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1, Vandersteen V2W Subwoofer Living Room: Transporter, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Office: Touch with Vandersteen VSM-1s Kitchen: Touch in-wall mount w/ Thiel Powerpoint 1.2s Bedroom: Squeezebox BOOM Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Around the House: SliMP3, SB1, SB2, SB3 Ford Thunderbird: SB Touch, USB drive Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107352 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

I mean disble the software volume > control and enable the hardware one? Doesn't matter what one calls it, the only point that matters is "Where" the volume control is actually happening: If it is being done in the Digital Domain, the stream is no longer Bit Perfect. If it happens in the analog section, then the data has been decoded, the DAC has done its job, and the analog level is being adjusted which doesn't affect the Bit Stream because all that was already completed. Almost all DACs and Digital Output devices that can control Volume do so in the digital domain all at the cost of Bit Perfect. Off the top of my head, I have only seen one DAC that had volume control that didn't affect the bit stream because it was actually a DAC/Pre-amp so the volume control on the remote controlled the analog pre-amp's various inputs as the output of the device went directly to the amplifier. *iPhone* Media Room: ModWright Platinum Signature Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Wood Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1, Vandersteen V2W Subwoofer Living Room: Transporter, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Office: Touch with Vandersteen VSM-1s Kitchen: Touch in-wall mount w/ Thiel Powerpoint 1.2s Bedroom: Squeezebox BOOM Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Around the House: SliMP3, SB1, SB2, SB3 Ford Thunderbird: SB Touch, USB drive Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108191 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Building LMS for 64-bit Debian running on ARM Single Board Computers
. . Sure looks like a bunch of trouble to do something that can just be done using a quick Vortexbox Image. The reason I say that is if one doesn't want to run a big server but one also feels that a Raspberry Pi is not powerful enough or doesn't have enough storage, why not run a NUC or a Micro Server? Is 5 watts really going to make that much difference especially if one can just install a Vortexbox Image from a USB Thumb Drive and be done with it? Almost any 64 bit Micro Server, NUC, or Atom is a good candidate for a very energy efficient LMS/PLEX media server. If efficient but still need a bunch of storage, go for the 4 bay Micro Server with Optical Drive and rip CDs and Movies automatically. Just need a music server with 2TB or less, then a 4 by 4 by 2 inch NUC is perfect. Want small but still want auto ripping with 4 to 8TB of storage, then build a Vortexbox using an Atom. Burn the Vortexbox Image to USB Thumb Drive and be done in 10 minutes. *iPhone* Media Room: ModWright Platinum Signature Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Wood Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1, Vandersteen V2W Subwoofer Living Room: Transporter, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Office: Touch with Vandersteen VSM-1s Kitchen: Touch in-wall mount w/ Thiel Powerpoint 1.2s Bedroom: Squeezebox BOOM Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Around the House: SliMP3, SB1, SB2, SB3 Ford Thunderbird: SB Touch, USB drive Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108166 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] FLAC and MP3 files in the database
Don't know your exact setup so I will not yet try to offer full suggestions. A few questions would be do you still use the MP3 players? If no, then get rid of all the dupes leaving only the MP3s that don't have a FLAC copy. If you still use the MP3 player, you might want to do what I have done for my iPhone. I keep all my MP3s on a separate drive except for the few that don't have FLAC copies. My Squeezebox library is almost completely FLAC and resides on its own drive along with a few MP3s. SBS just looks for music. If one has the same song title from the same group from the same album but one copy is the XRCD, another the Remaster, the original CD, and the iTunes download, SBS is going to list all of them and titling them differently when one rips them is the only way I know (other then extension) to tell them apart. Co-install 9.04 with your Windeers so you can get used to using it and still have MicroSuck Windeers. Then decide which Ubuntu to put on the barebones. The Ubuntu Forum and free Help/User Manual are worth choosing Ubuntu. -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, Vandersteen Quatro, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: SB3, GFR-700HD, Thiel 2.3, Second Boom Home Office: SB3, NAD C370, two VSM-1 Home Gym: SB3, Parasound Vamp v.3, Thiel PowerPoint 1.2 House Portable: SB3, Audioengine A5 Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Expedition: SB3, ToughBook iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63761 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Again it all comes down to choices. If somebody wants to use Linux and knows nothing about it, I strongly suggest using a system that only requires one to put and run a CD-R in the PC and they are done. As in using VortexBox for thier all in one ripping and SqueezeCenter Linux solution. If not, then they need to pick a Linux and learn it. Even MicroSuck must be learned, yes it'd dumbed down so that almost anybody can use it and that's basically what is wrong with Windows. We would be years ahead of where we are at now without MicroSuck. If not using VortexBox, my personal preference is Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10 Server. Ubuntu But if you have a friend willing to help that is an expert in Gentoo, I say go for it. Just about anything is better then XP.
