[SlimDevices: Unix] HifiBerry Digi2 Pro

2021-11-06 Thread Seanf

I recently bought a HifiBerry Digi2 Pro to replace the Digi+ Pro that I
have been using. However, it does not appear in the drop down menu of
Audio Output devices in PiCorePlayerand consequently, no sound comes
from it. The people at HifiBerry said the Digi+ Pro selection would
work, but it does not. Is there anything I can do apart from send it
back?

Select what Hifiberry said, then post some diagnostic data.

dmesg from the diagnosics page, and then there should be alot of data on
the Diagnostics->Sound page. Like detected devices.. .and such.

Thanks. What exactly should I post here? There is a lot of information.

@SEAN

You can also check the board with another OS

HiFiberry OS auto-configures and has a squeezelite player

Max2Play will also configure and has squeezelite (it is not a
requirement to have a licence).

I have just tested this on my old digi-pro; select hifiberry on the m2p
front page, select the card, save, reboot. The digi comes back up as a
squeezelite player (no need to update anything).

Raspberry PI OS-Lite is easily configured with squeezelite and the digi
overlay

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] HifiBerry Digi2 Pro

2021-11-07 Thread Seanf

Thanks for the advice Paul and Ronnie. I've now put the Digi2 Pro onto a
spare Pi I have and left the Digi+ Pro on the original to compare. Both
have Digi+ Pro selected as the output device, both have
sysdefault:CARD=sndrpihifiberry as the Output setting. So as far as I
can tell, both are set exactly the same, but the Digi+ Pro works and the
Digi2 Pro doesn't. @Ronnie, the red light on the optical output is
illuminated on both players. I haven't tried another OS yet.

There was a glimmer of hope when I was swapping output cables. I heard a
split second of sound, which must have come from the Digi2 as the other
one wasn't playing anything. Can't recreate this though. Is it possible
that the board is faulty?

Thanks for your patience,

Sean

Hi Sean

Wait until Paul is up and had a few coffees :), see what he suggests.

In the meantime; maybe try the hifiberry OS and see if that works.

Then contact HiFIBerry again, there are quite a few complaints against
that board on their forum, most of them unanswered .

At least you can pop any return around to them on your bike

Haha, yes. Maybe I should pop over and rattle their cage, it's just
across town :-) I think I will try their OS, that would tell me if the
problem is with board itself, as surely it should work with their own
software.

Just to update the thread. I sent the card back, they tested it,

Plugged it in and it worked straight away with no settings changed from
the Digi+ Pro, so I'm very happy now. The system sounds magnificent!

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] HifiBerry Digi2 Pro

2022-01-22 Thread sheeple

I encountered a similar problem today.

Digi2 on a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.5, powered by standard Pi4 power
supply, no other connections other than SD card and Digi2.

First I was using piCorePlayer 8.1.0, 64 Bit Kernel:

I set the audio output to Hifiberry Digi+ Pro as commonly advised and
squeezelite immediately stopped working after reboot. Then I began to
search for explanations:

This is pcp_boot.log:

  Press [Enter] to access console.

In the background, ntpd is syncing time between piCorePlayer and the internet.
A large offset between 1970 and now is normal.

After this, I installed HifiberryOS and after connecting to the device
via Ethernet, I was presented with a "Beocreate" surface where I could
choose which speaker to amplify. I think this is not correct.

Then I tried piCorePlayer ver. 6.1, 7, 8, 8.1 all in 32 Bit Kernel,
after using 64 Bit Kernel yesterday with ver 8.1.

I could not connect to piCorePlayer versions 6.1 and 7 over Ethernet and
had no patience to troubleshoot the reason why.
The versions 8 and 8.1 do all show squeezelite not running. With 8.1 I
tried to add force_eeprom_read=0 to the config.txt, but this did not
change a thing.

In the submenu "HAT information" is an entry which baffles me: although
piCorePlayer cannot start the Digi2 as indicated in pcp_boot.log, there
is information about a Digi2 Pro. Not even Digi+ Pro, which is the
overlay used in piCorePlayer settings, but Digi2. how comes this?

I am about to send this board back, but would still like to get it going
if it was possible. Any ideas how to continue?

I don't understand your experience with the HiFiBerry OS, I have used it
several times without a problem

However, I suggest you try a copy of

'

Install the overlay and squeezelite and see if the board is recognised

If you need any help, just ask :)

My guess was the Digi2 is not recognized and hence misrecognized as a
Beocreate amp. Maybe Beocreate is assigned when the OS sees something,
but all full.

Man in a van wrote:

I am burning the image to the SD atm. Any manuals on how to install the
overlay and squeezelite or is this a matter of clicks in the interface
of the raspberry pi OS?

I am working from a Windows 10 machine, Pi4 connected via ethernet to
the router.

SSH into the rpi (user pi default passwd raspberry ) I use Putty

do

Code:

sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y

on completion

do

Code:

  sudo apt install squeezelite -y

on completion

do

Code:

sudo nano /boot/config.txt

add the overlay here

36982

save and exit (use these keys)

Ctrl+xY Enter

Code:

sudo reboot

on reboot, connect by SSH and run

Code:

squeezelite -l

It certainly looks like it.

Just to confirm (because my instructions may have caused confusion)

Did you load

and have you run

Code:

sudo vcdbg log msg |& grep -v HDMI

If these have a similar failure, then I think your only option is to
begin a rtm of the board to the vendor.

I do not see an error here, only that the pi has responded to config.txt
entry and loaded hifiberry-digi.dtbo for audio output.

I added a dtoverlay line as per your instructions in the config.txt and
have confirmed it was saved there:

36993

Based on this, I recieve the aforementioned output for squeezelite -1
command.

OK

There has been some cross posting :)

Please change the overlay to

Code:

dtoverlay=hifiberry-digi-pro

Save, exit and reboot

then see if the board is connected

Sorry about this this, my bad :(

I will wait for your reply

I have changed in config.txt dtoverlay to dtoverlay=hifiberry-digi-pro.
If this is correct for Digi+ Pro, it should be the right one for Digi2.

Here is the whole set of results for every command that you have
suggested until now, based on the changes in config.txt:

Thanks, and I'm sorry for the run around :)

It would appear that the board is faulty :(

piCorePlayer loads the correct overlay and does not recognise the board

hifiberry OS does not recognise the board

raspberry pi OS loads the correct overlay and does not recognise the
board

https://www.hifiberry.com/docs/data-sheets/datasheet-digi2-pro/

https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/blob/master/boot/overlays/README

I can not think of anymore tests

Time to contact the vendor for a replacement.

I hope you have good luck (where are you ?)

Ronnie,
thanks for thorough troubleshooting. I did not want the hustle of
returning a working board and have to learn this from the the dealer
later on. Now I am confident it is not a user error.

I live in Germany, a replacement will not be a problem. A 2 years
warranty is the legal framework in case of a faulty product sold.

Thank you one more time, appreciated.

There have been a few folk with problems with HiFiBerry stuff, I hope
yours is sorted successfully.

Drop a reply if and when you get sorted.

Hi, I've had much the same issue with a new Pi 4 model B and Hifiberry
Digi2 Pro. I've completely failed to get the device recognized. Even
tried a 2nd Digi2 Pro with exactly the same results.

Finally yesterday I tried the hat in an old Pi 3 I had and all working
pretty much straight away, recognized immediately and all working
through the spdif coax.

So maybe my Pi 4 is faulty or something else. I'm using the official
PSU, got a 3.5 amp pi 4 psu on order so will try that and report back.

No joy with the 3.5 amp PSU

dmesg output (same picoreplayer SD card)

Pi 4 - Not recognised

[8.719732] wm8804 1-003b: Failed to read device ID: -121

Pi 3 - Working

[ 10.192473] wm8804 1-003b: revision E

Will probably stick with the pi 3 for now and keep an eye on hifiberry
forums, don't have another pi4.

Well that is one solution, but it should not be so.

Have you tried 'the hifiberry OS'
(https://www.hifiberry.com/hifiberryos/) on a sd card. that should
automatically recognise the board.

If that fails, then maybe consider your options for a replacement

Most vendors won’t support 64bit, since even rpi barely supports a pure
64 bit environment. With a 2gb board, there is not much of a reason to
run in 64bit.

It is my understanding that modern HATS have an eeprom that tells the

So, dmesg should tell you either, it successfully loaded drivers or it

What do you mean by performance being bad on the older board. A single

With LMS running as my main music server it would be much more snappier
to get new RP. I don’t have any between RP 1 and 4.
I realised that LMS and UI is very slow on old RP.
But if it’s not possible to manage with RP4 I need to do something else.

If it doesn't work on that then your Pi is faulty.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] HifiBerry Digi2 Pro

2022-02-03 Thread sheeple

The vendor finally replied and apparently is willing to refund me.

I have read with interest the fact that a Digi2 Pro was not recognized
on another 2GB Pi4, which is also the model I have in use. The company
HiFiBerry does not sell the board for specific Pi's and therefore must
assure its operability over the range, if single models are not
explicitly excluded. At least this is my understanding after cautiously
reading there marketing, where they don't. If the board is not working
on the Pi4 2GB, this is a manufacturers problem.

Anyhow, I want your opinion if you advice a fall back to the Digi+ Pro.
My question is directed peculiarly to two concerns: a] is the Digi+ Pro
possibly more compatible and will this be a way to spare me the effort
of enother return? Any expereinces on this? b) what features will I miss
out, i. e. the addition of the DSP module?

And I´ve now tested with Hifiberry DAC2 Pro and it´s the same problem.

It seams to be clear that hifiberry boards don´t work with RP4.

Did you try hifiberry OS instead of picoreplayer? That worked for my

That really doesn't make much sense. There is nothing to these boards.
I wonder if it is a conflict in interface being enabled. You might try
disabling the SPI interface.

Find this line in your config.sys

and change it to

Just for the record, I run a Hifiberry Dac2 Pro on RPi 4 with 2GB, in
pCP. No problems. In squeezelite I use HiFiBerry DAC+ (and Pro, AMP2)

I ran into the same problem in that squeelite won't start for the digi2
board. As I'm a bit time squeezed at the moment I tried the hifiberry os
as suggested here and it does work. It's not as snappy, or even remotely
as configurable as pcp, but it does work on a pi4.

However I suspect the next digi board I get (and I do need another one
soon ish) it won't be a hifiberry.

I have been quite pleased with the justboom digi. I run it on a 4GB
pi4, using pCP with LMS and hosting my media files on a USB drive. I
originally bought it because it was one of the cheaper ones just to try
digi out without a financial commitment. I have been pleased and see no
reason to change. Good luck.

If you are using a pi4, then USB dacs can be very attractive. The Pi4
does not suffer from the USB problems of the older Pies.

For digi Hats, those are your only real commercial options. There might
be some DIY boards out there though, but research drivers before you do
those.

I do not need a DAC at all, because the digital signal is going into a
Hypex plate amp that has its own converters.

I always thought Justboom products where produced by the same factory as
the HiFiBerry SPIDF-boards, but the latter had bought the more
sophisticated layouts too. When I asked JB about their products, I never
got replied and decided against them. And I thought these would suffer
from the same condition. I also wanted the Plus versions.

One option would be a Topping D10
(https://www.tpdz.net/productinfo/505000.html), which you can use to
convert from USB out to SPDIF (Coax and Optical) out to connect to your

Is this what you were referring to (in a thread about Digi 2 Pro)?

"All our boards are tested after production and work when they leave the

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] HifiBerry Digi2 Pro

2022-02-20 Thread kingswindsor

I have what may be a related problem. I have two Beocreate boards
attached to Pi3B+s. The Beocreate’s are using the stock Beovox
CX100 image uploaded to the DSP. With the HiFiBerryOS software
squeezelite works fine but I would like to move to pCp - for two
reasons: it is more robust and the HiFiBerryOS sometimes starts working
as a DNS server to other things on the network (inconvenient!).

However I can’t get much volume out of the same hardware when I
use pCp. The board seems to be picked up and I have selected
HiFiBerryOS DACzero/miniAMP as the device and hw:CARD=sndrpihifiberry
from the options available. No ALSA mixer. I’m running pCp 8.1.0
32-bit. Both setups behave the same.

Is there a way I can increase the gain/volume in pCP? I’m
assuming that the EPROM in the Beocreate boards has been set to a
reasonable level because the volume using HiFiBerryOS is perfectly OK.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] HifiBerry Digi2 Pro

2022-02-21 Thread sheeple

I have two configurations at home at the moment: A Pi3 with Digi+ Pro
and a Pi4 with Digi+ Transformer.

After I had enabled ALSA 10 band equalizer from within piCorePlayer the
first time with the Pi3-based system, I noticed something like clipping
when the source (music track) was high level. I first thought I had to
find a place where I could, as I had slightly boosted some bands, lower
the total levels. But it went away and I happily listened at 100%
digital input level.

After the last listening orgy, starting with listening to the
aforementioned recording "Good Morning Midnight", I was again noting
some sound degradation when playing at 100% digital input and
interatively reduced it to 90%. At this level it is gone. I cannot tell
for sure if the absence of this "clipping" or "overdrive" was there in
the first place, or if I had simply not noted it at the beginning, but
when it set in, it was very "there". At least this is the order of the
story how my brain put things together for now.

Is this reasonable, that this occurs? I first thought I could only
notice it with the Pi3 with Digi+ Pro, but now I found out it is also
the case with Pi4 with Digi+ Transformer.
