I maintain Linux servers for a living which means I mainly do other
things since I don't really do any fiddling.

(Project of the month: fixing software for Windows that the company
spent tens of thousands of dollars on... by replacing it with software
on Linux that I downloaded and configured in less than an hour...
fortunately it is not my job to tell management why they wasted money
on expensive servers with expensive software when they could have done
the same thing for free...)

Ironically most of the time I now spend waiting for the Windows people
to figure out how to automate something like wget to grab my
auto-generated output... Took a morning to get the code done and now
sitting at 3 work days for them to figure out what is a simple cron'd
"wget --mirror" or rsync on Linux

Maybe I was not clear.
Let's say that I built a new pc and installed Windows XP myself.
I probaby would not bother to start a thread boasting of a problem free
clean install.
That would be as you say ,"thread crap"

Sorry to hear that. My experience has been the exact reverse: after
fiddling with Slimserver + MusicMagic/MusicIP under WinXP for years, I
switched to Ubuntu GNU/Linux and have spent my time just enjoying the
music. So in my case 'ease of use' isn't a mantra, just a report of my
experience. I suppose, as you say, people's experience simply differs.

I recently discovered that mp3tag runs extremely well under Wine on my
Ubuntu Feisty box. Can't tell you how pleased I am not to have to turn
on my WinXP box more or less ever now! :-)

how poorly coded microsoft's operating systems are. Apart from mp3tag

find Total Commander the most convenient way of doing file management
and mp3tag indispensable for managing FLAC metadata. Unfortunately,
Linux doesn't yet have credible alternatives in this space.

The problem windows has here is that it doesn't have the drivers on
disk.
In Ubuntu Linux every possible driver there is is compiled as a module
so that it is loaded if the corresponding hardware is being found.
This way of building a kernel gives slightly more overhead and a bit
bigger kernel but it runs on almost everything

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] OT: I'm impressed

2008-01-11 Thread bobkoure

The windows issue is the HAL (hardware adaptation layer). In earlier
versions of NT, you could swap hardware, stick your NT CD in, boot to
that CD, run "repair" and that would replace your old HAL with the
right one.
This went to "sometimes worked" in Win2K, and they seem to have
completely disabled it in XP/2K3.

I was an NT driver developer at one point and got to see this stuff "up
close and personal".

The driver and HAL architecture is actually not bad - but the fact that
they just abandoned efforts to make the HAL reloadable is, indeed, an
example of what's wrong with closed source software...

However, Linux doesn't appear to have the same problems in this space.
Where Linux does suffer is in that new hardware isn't necessarily
readily supported when first released, however, this is becoming
increasingly isolated.

You know, part of this problem is motherboard and chipset manufacturers
and their oh so reliable chipset driver packs? :)

True Windows should be able to deal with it better, but it isn't
completely MS's fault.
