Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer on RPi Zero W - first time wifi settings

2022-11-06 Thread Operajulian

Well after all that (sock) darning.

I went back a step or two.

When my Kitchen Pi3b+ updated to pCPv8.2 it lost the ability to connect
to Wlan - despite many attempts. So this morning downloaded v8.0 and
started a new card. That worked eventually.

So downloaded v8.1 which has Pi Zero 2W support and imaged that to a new
card.
It loads on Pi Zero ( though the HDMI in the config file had to be put
in safe mode for the screen to work )

Managed to get an IP address from Wlan and did the rest of the set up
incl adding the Mini Boss DAC.
It's recognized by the LMS server on the Main Pi 3B+

Thanks for all the suggestions. It's much appreciated.

The next part of the project is to put the Zero & Mini DAC into a
vintage radio. Wish me luck.

Julian  :-)

Ronnie

All good things to ask :-)
I soldered the 40 pin - I think I am quite good at that as I repair
vintage HiFi ( you may have seen my posts on PinkFishMedia ).
The PiZero is currently sitting on the base of its plastic case - as
that is easier to get the SD card in/out.
It's all of 2ft from the router.

Annoyingly, I put the Rapsian OS SD card back in this morning and that
one finds the Wifi and acquires an IP address. So I don't think its the
antennae or anything else but something within TC/Picore.Julian

Further darn.

This piZero 2-W

Is it in a metal case ?

How did you attatch the gpio pin header ?

I ask because the wireless antenna

a)  may have been damaged

b) is performance restricted because of the casing.

If bought second hand then the previous owner may have damaged the
board.

If new then obvs, contact the supplier

Thanks so much for taking a look.
I am in Toronto Canada with a Bell 3000 router.
It has both 5 and 2.4 channels with the same SSID
I also have a SSID guest as well.

Oh well

That said the ethernet setup went great - plugged to phono outputs of
the MiniBoss to a Tivoli Radio aux input.
My main Pi with LMS can find the Zero Pi and load music/apps etc into
the playing cue. So thats all good :-)

Cheers again

Well I tried a whole new download of pcp v8.2 64 bit version.
Extracted it and Rasp Imager onto a new card ( yes with the settings
options ).

No network find for Wifi - again

Thanks to the wonders of Amazon Prime - got an OTG USB to ethernet
adaptor

Tried via ethernet and a IP address is found.

Logged in the pcp via the IP address
Re-entered the Wifi credentials and saved thus creating a PSK
paraphrase.

Recognises other changes in the pcp settings eg the Mini Boss DAC but
still no Wifi - DARN

Off to have a beer
Not a successful Pi day/evening

hi Operajulian,

I was just looking at your wifi-diag in pastebin. (posted 23 hours
ago?)

I haven't seen a wifi network like yours before. New technology?

I'll just post a few things hoping someone can chime in.

29 wifi AP's with quite a few with having a blank ssid.

The strongest ssid which I assume you are trying to attach too, has 3
networks, 2.4GHz, 5GHz and something else???.

I usually have different ssid names for 2.4GHz and 5GHz. I was wondering
if your RPi3B+ has only 2.4GHz but is trying to attach to 5GHz???

Just so you are sure :):):):-

One needs to load the rpi Bullseye Lite Image and fill in the settings
for SSH and Wi-Fi ( I just use pi and raspberry for user id and passwd
when testing).

These settings don't work for piCorePlayer and one must unzip the PCP
download to reach the .img

I have just done the recommended tests for my Zero and it appears to
have just fallen of the network like a Norwegian Blue:rolleyes:

Just emailed the supplier to see if I'm eligible for a replacement

Hi Paul, thanks for the info, the old Apple ITunes install (was that for
the Bonjour which accompanied it ?) :o

I'm on Windows 10 Pro, I have no problem with moode.local, volumio.local
or raspberrypi.local.

I have always had problems with pcp.local, sometimes it works without a
problem and other times I have to resort to IP Address. It doesn't seem
to like my network.

This irritates me, but as I only use pCP on one device for my personal
use, I can live with it.

I tend to use the raspberry PI OS for LMS and Squeezelite and play with
other OS as a way of learning :confused:. Sometimes I learn big and
sometimes little :)

Keep safe

In theory, piCorePlayer should handle different formatted text files.
pCP changes the EOL markers and just reads the ssid and password and
creates a fresh config file.

But there is always a chance that there is some combination not
accounted for??

Modern Windows Notepad can preserve line endings but I don’t think it
offers a “save as” choice.
So if you start from a fresh file in Windows Notepad then it has Windows
line endings.

However, if your RPi is getting a reachable IP address then it is
working.

If pcp.local is not working (and you have not personalised the host
name) then it implies, to me, that your Windows machine does not have
mDNS support.

For older versions of Windows, installing Apple iTunes is one way to get
it.
(not checked back to see which version of Windows you are running).

Well I tried all those and more.

I moved everything upstairs to be right beside the router.
I loaded a fresh SD card with Raspbian OS and all that worked fine -
including finding the network and getting an IP address.

So loaded a new SD with Picore image 8.2 - went through the whole
process again and still no network found.
Yes I have triple checked the wpa-supplicant.conf file and it has the
exact same details as the successful Raspbian OS card.

Darn - time for a coffee and a rethink.

That gives me a few things to try over the weekend. I have to be at work

@OPERAJULIAN

Julian, I followed @Castalla's example (post #2) on a Windows 10 Pro
Desktop using Wordpad.

I dragged the wpa_supplicany.conf file into the open boot parttion on
the Desktop.

This is pCP v8.2.0 32 bit standard

It doesn't happen on my system. I guess its a function of your DHCP
settings. My IP addresses remain fairly consistent until there is a
power failure.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer on RPi Zero W - first time wifi settings

2020-08-15 Thread Greg Erskine

Hi Alan0,

When you have "# Maintained by piCorePlayer" in your wpa_supplicant.conf
initially on your boot partition, pCP just reads your SSID and password
and creates a new wpa_supplicant.conf. So as long as you get the ssid=
and psk= lines correct it should work. We do this because we assume most
people will make a typo or formatting error. For example, castalla's
example has the last } missing. :D

As I know this, my initial wpa_supplicant.conf are just this.

Code:

ssid="yourssid"
  psk="password"

Once you have Wifi working you can go into the [Wifi] page and type your
a password again, add the country code, then press [Save]. This will
create a new wpa_supplicant.conf with the country code added plus it
will encrypt your password so you don't have your password stored as
plain text.

regards
Greg

Thank you! I must have had a typo in the file.

I've got an IP address now and can see the piCorePlayer page on that
address (192.168.1.14). I'll connect the DAC board and continue the
setup of Squeezelite and LMS on that page.

Just create the wpa supplicant file in the boot partition. Change
country to your location

Use a text editor

# Maintained by piCorePlayer
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=staff
# Two Character Country Code
country=US
update_config=1

network={
ssid="yourssid"
psk="password"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
auth_alg=OPEN

Then boot the pi zero. Check the IP address the pi receives from your
router. Use this address (eg. 192.168.0.123) in a browser to get the
PcP dashboard

[SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer on RPi Zero W - first time wifi settings

2020-08-15 Thread Alan0

I'm new to piCorePlayer and am attempting to set it up on a RPi Zero W
with an Allo MiniBoss DAC board. This hardware setup has worked with
Volumio, but I'd like to give piCorePlayer a try after hearing about it
from a John Darko article.

My problem is a basic one: I cannot get the system to connect to my
wi-fi, using the two methods on the
how_to_setup_wifi_on_pcp_without_ethernet page.

1. When I use the setup program with a keyboard and monitor, the
settings appear to be saved. After rebooting, I get "Waiting for
network...No network found", and the boot process gets stuck trying
to set the date and time (I assume with a service that it can't reach).
When I run setup again, the wi-fi settings are blank. Should they still
be there, or are they just for one time use?

2. When I create a custom wpa_supplicant.conf file on the SD card, I get
similar results. The wi-fi settings appear to be loaded and the system
reboots a second time when starting up. I get "Waiting for
network...No network found", and the process hangs up in the same
way trying to set the date. I noticed after booting that the file has
been renamed to "used_wpa_supplicant.conf" on the SD card.

I've tried the suggestions on the faq_wifi_does_not_work page, like
removing the DAC board and verifying the SSID and password. The wi-fi is
built into my RPi, so I don't think it's any of the USB adapter issues.

Any help would be most appreciated.
