The company used to have an option specifically for that edge case, in
which someone wanted to participate in open source and also include iOS
among their deployment platforms, along with a few other perks as well,
for US$99:

Given how well the other concerns are already addressed, this Membership
option seemed useful as it covered the one use case not otherwise handled.

I can't find it at the store, however. I've CC'd Ben here to see if he
can chime in on what happened to that Membership program.

I like this idea. And it would be a way for poor folks like me to help cash
flow runrev without a huge crushing dent in my paltry bank account. Would
be nice to be able to give away apps without having to provide source.

How about free, with the option to donate $99 if you choose?

As a customer, I love free stuff. As a vendor, I kind of like it too because
it can be a type of advertising. We do that already at Paradigma with
Valentina Studio. We give away the equivalent of what other guys charge $99
or more. Then a (smaller) group of people come back and buy the Pro version
to get the additional features.

But there's also the support end of it, too. As a vendor, you have to decide
if you can actually support / afford your freemium model. It is really a
complex thing. A major consideration is to what degree does your free level
cannibalizes your sales of higher end versions.

For example, consider $99 for commercial for free applications. You could
have a company buy such a license, and produce all sorts of compiled
applications for internal use, or use by their customers. They are still
generating a profit off of whatever is being supported by the free
applications. They could also use the FOSS community version too, which
would probably be fine for any applications used internally - but they might
be reluctant to distribute those FOSS apps if a competitor can get some
advantage from it.

Exactly.

If it represents material value to a company, the license is a bargain.

And if that competitive advantage isn't worth even a few hundred bucks,
why bother?

I’m wondering if this problem will go away with Xcode 7 and the free developer
program. As you will now be able to release the source for someone to modify
and install on their device outside the app store it’s a bit of a game changer.
The only issue I guess is whether the fact that you still need to sign up to
the developer program breaks the GPL but that might be a bit pedantic on the
part of the FSF…

Cheers
