The installer itself is 32bit but it will give you 64bit binaries. I had to 
upgrade my 5.7.x to the latest version first, but then I could add the x64 
version of 8.0.

I have never used Maria DB. Since this is mission critical, I do not want to 
introduce any quirks, so I am sticking to what I know.

I was going to suggest that. On-Rev(LiveCode Hosting) started using MariaDB a 
while back. I had no compatibility issues with existing DBs.
