SSL + static IP with an on-rev account

2014-01-31 Thread Dave Kilroy
Hello all

I'd like to get everyone's advice one getting SSL and static IP on one of
the domains in my on-rev account (I got the lifetime option some time ago)

Reliability and performance got rather scratchy for a while but seem to be
pretty good now (I'm on Pancake). For a while it also seemed that people
with an on-rev account with static IP got worse reliability than those of us
who didn't - what is the service for you like now?

Kind regards

Dave

Re: SSL + static IP with an on-rev account

2014-01-31 Thread Pierre Sahores
Hi Dave,

SSL and static IP option QOS went very strongly improved over the two last
quarters of 2013 by the on-rev team and the service is yet perfectly stable at
a very high trustable level (monthly pingdom.com reports mostly at 100%).

Best Regards,

Pierre

Re: SSL + static IP with an on-rev account

2014-01-31 Thread jbv
Dave,

I've been working all day on 1 of our sites still hosted on pancake (with
static ip) and from time to time the server response can be very slow
(like 10 to 15 sec for a simple ajax request)... I guess this is related
to the server charge which can vary during the day...
Actually, a few months ago, we moved most of our sites from a
regular on-rev account to a dedicated server (also hosted and maintained
by on-rev) and things improved by several orders of magnitude.
Of course this is significanly more expensive, but we actually transfered
the sites of 3 different accounts, so splitting the cost between the 3
accounts, each one having several sites/clients to whom we van charge a
small monthly hosting fee makes the thing cost-effective.

Best,
jbv

No doubt. One of the challenges with On-Rev is that LiveCode is so easy
to use that it's like providing its users with a gun, a bullet, and a
map to their foot. :)

I've heard expectations of being able to run 8-hour analytics processes
on a shared host, or using a single shared-host account to resell as a
shared-hosting solution.

I wonder if the throttles on On-Rev need to be made a little tighter.

I believe an older version of On-Rev had the throttle set at 30
contiguous seconds per process, but that's insanely liberal, making it
far too easy for one account on the machine to dominate the processor,
hindering performance for many others using the same machine. It's also
a horrible user experience: when was the last time any user waited 30
seconds for a page to refresh? 1994?

Of course we don't want the server to pull the rug out from under a
running process, but we also don't want to see runaway processes, or
just poorly-written scripts, dominating a shared machine.

What would be an appropriate way to throttle usage on On-Rev?

Wait, you are on pancake? Does that mean there are several on-rev hosts you can
host your data on? If so, what is the most optimal host for me in Southern
California?

Good question. My understanding is that Pancake and others servers are based
in Paris (France) - they used to be in Texas - however RunRev have been very
opaque as to what machines are physically where, mirrors (if any) etc so I
would ask them directly. Unless Richard or someone else knows the answer?

what's great about Amazon storage is that you can 'locate' your data in
whatever area in the world works best for you - or several of them, with
one account.
