All I know about this alleged security breach is what you've written in

If I've understood this correctly, the reported issue involved strangers
uploading and playing files on your computer without your permission or

Joe, can't we keep the discussion to something *close* to technology
and RunRev?

Do you have so little respect for those devout in their beliefs who
frequent and help this forum as to post such an atheist and conspiracy
point of view video?

Many of those same people help you learn how to solve problems in Rev.
Do you really think a simple sensationalist Google video (which has so
low a standard as it is presently being debated on whether to delete
it from Wikipedia) would change a devout or patriotic person's
opinion, based on clicking a link from this Use-List?

What a supreme insult.

Why can't you just do like others and create your own blog and fill it
with your own viewpoints?

Heather, please step in and kill this very offensive thread now,

Re: Referencing a stack that is not open

2007-07-13 Thread David Bovill

It loads the stack into memory and keeps it there. You will see this if you
check the "mainstacks". This is not the same as an "open" stack which you
can check using the "openstacks".

Every time Rev gets a property (even if it checks whether a stack exists) it
"loads" the stack into memory - you have to "unload" it using the very badly
named "delete stack" syntax if you want to be picky about memory.

In practical terms there is not much difference between an open stack that
is not visible and a "loaded" stack that is not open.

Hope that helps :)

entire stack file, get the requested data, then flush it from memory? Did
it read only what it needed?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Re: localizing software

2007-07-13 Thread Graham Samuel
Many fine words have been written in reply to Mark Talluto's initial
question. Personally I favour the text file version or something like
it (my "something" is a script consisting of a set of global
definitions which I can pass over as text to a human translator), but
I have one other point to add, which is that if one is to refer to
multilingual texts (whether items in menus, dialog texts, error
messages, instructions or anything else), in a multilingual situation
you are forced to refer to these indirectly. For example you can't write

Answer "yes, indeed"

but instead have to write something like

Answer mystringConstantYesIndeed

or maybe

Answer the mystringConstantYesIndeed of stack 'Multlingual stuff"

My point is that either version of the above is preferable to writing

Answer myStringConstant468

In other words, the author should still use meaningful names for his/
her strings in his/her own native language, otherwise all coding will
have to be done with a dictionary, which takes away some of the charm
of the human-readable scripting language which we all know and love.
I suppose this is really saying that what Eric calls the ID of the
text string should clearly remind the developer what the string was
intended to say.

I hope other people agree with this approach.

Graham

Re: launch app from browser

2007-07-13 Thread David
The question I have is if you want to get the html link to open a rev
document - either by your application or the IDE - it seems on tests
on OSX to open multiple instances of the application and not let the
application open multiple stacks. I know this can be got around using
text files to implement locks - and I remember some issue and I think
IDE or engine enhancements to work with these issues - but can't find
them :)

How do you get an html link to a .rev file not to open multiple
instances of the app?

RE: MTBF, I think I read somewhere where hard drives now have much
better shock resistance than what we used to work with. I've always
had hard drives fail, back in the day when LaCie and other Mac vendors
sold them to us, we routinely returned them for replacement. I don't
have any real figures on MTBF, just believe it to be true. I'll look
around for more info on it.

Yep, they're saying the Asus laptop will ship from $189 to $299.

Re: OT --LONG POST HARD DRIVEs was Save the Mac Mini

2007-07-13 Thread Stephen Barncard

Ok I was thinking about getting one.. I signed #1028

Paul, I'll have to disagree here about hard drives. At least with the
brand that I've stuck with over the years; MAXTOR drives really seem
to last. As I use hard drives like audio and video tape (and at least
two or three drives per project) I have gone through literally
hundreds of hard drives over the last 7 years. I buy raw (internal)
drives and plug them into a drive dock and use them like digital
paper. They fit into VHS Tape cases for storage and fit nicely in
storage systems designed for the tapes.

Before each project, I go to CompUSA and check out the latest
price-performance combination. Back in 2003, we were lucky to get
7200rpm 8mb cache drives for $120 US. And although rare, they would
sometimes go bad. Keeping this same price, the next level of drives
from Maxtor got a lot more reliable and much bigger; 7200/16/120gb
drives started to appear. They seemed to survive a lot longer -
although this seems counterintuitive - as more platters were added to
increase storage size. Today Maxtor offers 320 gig drives with 16 mb
cache for $109 US...the extra 20 is provided for that which gets
eaten up in formatting. Yes I still buy them in pairs. Also I'm
planning a redundant style RAID array soon with my old Cube as a main
repository.

I attribute the longevity of these drives to good engineering, and a
science that they carry out and improve over time. They seem to have
conquered the dreaded power interruption problem to a great degree -
emergency head-lifting technology has come a long way.

My failure rate is way low now. And I hit these drives hard with
pushing multi-track audio and video delivery to limits. They get
warm, but don't fail.

I live in San Francisco and can get anything here (Fry's), but I've
been spending more time at my mom's house in Mobile Alabama, and it's
a lot harder to get stuff you want there (although there is always
mail order). It was also impossible to walk into any store and buy a
copy of Tiger - but that's another rant). They did have some Mac
software in a corner at Office Max, but no Tiger.

For some reason, it is hard to get MAXTOR raw drives in
brick-and-mortar stores. They are not carried in OfficeMax, Staples,
Target, Best Buy or Wall-Wart. These places carry the little USB2
backup drives from Maxtor, but that's about it.

Instead, most offer WESTERN DIGITAL product. I would recommend that
people avoid this brand. They have consistently made cheap and
unreliable product, and are not on the leading edge. I would never
trust my data to this brand. And their pricing is not competitive.

Seagate to me is an unknown. They don't seem to offer many bare
drives to consumers, just packages for them and pallets for OEMs. I
think these guys have been making drives since the 70's.

I think SONY and TEAC still make drives, but I don't see them in
stores. Everything else is either China generic or re-branded.

sorry for the long-windedness/OT - just want to share the experience.

Re: OT - Save the Mac Mini

2007-07-13 Thread SimPLsol
Chipp,
I too have had "issues" with Apple hardware (most notably, replacing the
screen on this 17" laptop). But in the last two months I updated three
companies
who were still using all of the hardware I installed for them a decade ago.
Another customer refuses to give up his 18 year old ImageWriter printer. Of
course these are isolated examples and don't prove anything.
Consumer Reports has, for the last three years, said Apple had the most
repair-free hardware (especially the desktops) and the best tech support - this

PS I'm not sure MTBF HAS increased. Seems that HDs fail more frequently, RAM
failure was never an issue for me until about five years ago, the old
keyboards would last forever but some of the new ones are unusable after a year
or so
of hard use.
PPS The Asus' Eee PC 701 looks interesting as long as it doesn't cost more
than an iPhone.

And this is the reason why locking screen every time you can is
important:

put into tNames
lock screen
REPEAT for each item tName in tNames
put empty into field tName
  END REPEAT
unlock screen

Only one screen refresh :-)

Also keep in mind that in a script like this, you're "touching" a
field

(manipulating its contents) every iteration through the loop, which
will slow it down anyway. So even if you had 1000 fields on a card I
doubt you'd gain much with "repeat for each" vs. "repeat with".

Best,

ps. in cases like these I generally don't bother putting the list of
names in a variable, I do this:

repeat for each item i in
"name2,examier2,vsmiFld,vsmiFld2,ci1,vsmiFld3,vsmiFld5,vsmiFld4"

  put empty into fld i
end repeat

So there's yet another variation...

Here is the script:

put

tNames
REPEAT for each item tName in tNames -- Clears all fields
put empty into field tName
END REPEAT

I don't have to use this script but I hate to empty the fields the
long way:

put empty into field "name2" of card "index"
put empty into field "examiner2" of card "index"
put empty into field "vmiFld" of card "Index"

etc.

Can anyone tell me why repeat script does not work?

I still consider myself a newbie. Up until now I have used this

until now I would have scripted the above like this

put "name2,examiner2,vsmiFld2,ci1,vsmiFld3,vsmiFld5,vsmiFld4" into
tNames

  repeat with R1 = 1 to num(items) of tNames
put "" into fld item R1 of tNames
   end repeat

Is there any advantage in the other method or is it just another
way of doing
the same thing? Revolution is great in that there’s usually several

Re: launch app from browser

2007-07-13 Thread viktoras didziulis
The only way to get this working would be using HTA. Note, it works on
MS windows (98 and up) only.

It is an html file that starts like this:

Put your title here

Click here to launch the myapp.exe

Save this file as test.hta. Thats it. HTA's have same restrictions as
any other applications on windows. Now you can use javascript (jscript),
vbscript, activex components and whatever you need...

If there are frames in the hta application then each frame must be
allowed to get access to system by setting it to "application" and
"trusted" like application="yes" trusted="yes" i.e.like:
application="yes" trusted="yes" width="100%" height="97%" marginwidth=0
marginheight=0 frameborder=0 scrolling="auto">

A script question

2007-07-13 Thread Francis Nugent Dixon

Hi from Paris,

I ran :

on mouseUp
  --global tNames,tName
  put "MyField1,MyField2,MyField3,MyField4,MyField5,MyField6,MyField7,"
into tNames

REPEAT for each item tName in tNames -- Clears all fields
--answer tName with "OK"
put empty into field tName
  END REPEAT
end mouseUp

Forget about the global declaration and the Answer command. I just like
to see what I'm doing before I comment the commands out !

Runs OK. (although I used different field names than you !)

Check that you have no return in your "put" command. I see "tNames" on
a new line.

That will bring up a script error.

Hello,
One interesting stack I did was for a teacher of mine. He was switching
everything over from an older test-making program he had to a new testing
website. However, there was no way to export the tests from the old program
into a format the website could read, so I made a stack that could take a
test and answer key, then spit out a properly formatted test file. It was
really a simple program, but my teacher sure gave a lot of extra credit for
it. :P
