Re: [OT] What's an iPad?

2010-04-11 Thread Mike Brown
I just got a 16 GB iPad yesterday. I was thinking of it as a large
iPod touch, but it is not. It is something new that is a blast to
use. I think it will change the way people casually use technology
and is a big step forward in consumer electronics. After using it for
the last day, I think it is a good value as well. It can replace a
net book, kindle, and a hand-held game system as well as being a media
system for photos, video and music. Much more fun than I expected and
I would suspect it will be a widely copied model over the next years
by other companies.

I suppose you would say:

revBrowserSet id, htmltext,tGooglePage

where id would be the id of the revBrowser instance. Still wouldn't
work on a phone.

Here's a script that would close all existing revBrowsers, get the
Google page source, and then set it to a new instance:

on mouseUp
  put revBrowserInstances() into tInstances
repeat for each item tInstance in tInstances
 revBrowserClose tInstance
  end repeat

  put url (http://www.google.com/;) into tGooglePage
put revBrowserOpen(the windowId of this stack, ) into tBrowserId
revBrowserSet tBrowserId,rect, the rect of button placeholder
  revBrowserSet tBrowserId,htmltext,tGooglePage
end mouseUp

Usually I think you would open the initial page in the first
revBrowserSet line. In the above example, button placeholder is
set to have an outer glow, which means that the web page seems to
have that outer glow too.

Using the brush tool

2010-03-15 Thread Mike Brown

Hello,

I am trying to create use the brush tool (choose brush tool) to paint

can select other buttons or objects in a stack?

Currently, I have a row of buttons (one for each color) but once I
select a color and choose the brush tool, I can paint within my image
but cannot switch to a different color or select a button. The stack
kind of locks up accept for painting with the single color within the
image.

Is there a tutorial stack for this?

Thanks,

The same one you use to change the tool to the brush tool, only
specifying the browse tool instead:

 choose browse tool

As for keeping some buttons in browse mode while having paint tools
in

use, you can try two options:

- Try setting the cantSelect of the buttons you want to maintain
browse-mode behavior. When that property is set they respond as
though
they're in browse mode even when the tool is the pointer tool - may
work

for the brush tool as well.

- Have those buttons in a palette stack, limiting your toplevel
stack to

the painting canvas.

For the long term, it would be really great if we could have tool
modes
for group controls, so you could have a tool pane running in browse
mode

and a group as your paint canvas, all in one window.

There's a request for this, if you feel like it's something worth
voting

for:

Re: Making Screensavers with Revolution

2003-11-24 Thread Mike Brown
Hi Jim,

I tried the mousemove method:

on mousemove
  quit
End mousemove

But it does not work on the Windows OS for a screensaver application (.scr).
The screensaver will launch from Windows but immediately quits as if you
moved the mouse... Even if the mouse is completely stationary.

It is my understanding that Windows handles all of the functions of a
screensaver made in the .scr format but your application has to have a
function that waits for the Windows message sent to it to know when to quit.

I need to know what that message name is or how it is implemented. I did
some searching around but haven't found anything yet...

Thanks,

Re: Making Screensavers with Revolution -Example Stack

2003-11-24 Thread Mike Brown
Here is a link for downloading the Rev Stack that can be made into a
screensaver on Windows OS:

http://clients.cyber-ny.com/rev/ScreenSaver.rev

To make this into a screensaver, you would save it as a Standalone and then
replace the .exe extension with .scr. Then take the new .scr file you
created and drop it into the windows directory of your PC. From your PC's
Start menu, select Settings and then Display Settings. A pop-up with
display settings will open. Select the Screen Savers tab and you should
be able to locate the new ScreenSaver from the menu of options. Set it to
display in 1 minute and then save. After a minute, the screensaver should
appear. When you move the mouse, it will quit.

This is a crude example where I have used a single logo image that fades in
and out at different point on the screen. I stored the script that controls
the screensaver effect and repeat loops in a hidden button called
MoveLogo. The scripts that initiate the screensaver effect are stored in
the card's script. The stack script contains the quit methods and a script
for centering and resizing the stack for different monitors.

Any suggestions or improvements are welcome!!

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Develop on Windows or Mac?

2003-11-05 Thread Mike Brown

The Revolution team has done an excellent job of providing a truly
cross-platform development tool with very little differences!

I have developed Revolution applications on both a Mac G4 and Windows 2000
XP machines and have not run into any platform related bugs. From my
experience, Revolution seems to run equally well on both Mac Windows
machines. I do not detect a performance difference or advantage relating to
the software.

Because I am more comfortable working from Mac OS X, I tend to do 90% of
development from the Mac, BUT when it comes time to distribute to a Windows
market, I always have to load my Rev Stack onto a Windows PC and do cosmetic
changes because the final stack or standalone does not display the same on
both operating systems. Text fields, labels and other elements such as
buttons will shift position so alignment is off. Also, background colors
that appear white or transparent from the Mac can display with a shaded
color on Windows until you go to the color palette and assign a color.

If you are building apps for a Windows audience and want to avoid this extra
step, you may choose to develop directly from Windows. I choose to develop
on a Mac because I like all of the other Mac friendly design tools that I
use for the interface elements and I prefer the Mac OS X environment... So
for me, it is worth the extra steps at the end of the project to clean up
alignments from a Windows computer or using a Windows computer as a visual
reference.

Re: Making Windows application icons on Mac

2003-11-04 Thread Mike Brown
I successfully used the BMPtoICO utility and was able to add an icon to a
Windows standalone from my Mac. Unfortunately only the 16 color format
would work. I am spoiled by the higher quality look of OS X and Windows XP
icons... Is there any way to add a better icon to a Windows Rev app than a
32 x 32 pixel 16 color version? Is that standard or an outdated format??

Game play and repeat loops

2003-10-19 Thread Mike Brown
Hi Everyone,

I am scripting a simple animated game. An object moves across the stack
driven by commands within a repeat loop. I want to change variables within
the repeat loop when the user selects one of the arrow keys (up, down, left,
right). Basically, as the object moves across the screen, it's direction
can be changed by selecting the arrow key.

Is the use of a repeat loop for this incorrect or is there a way to insert
condition changes into the loop?

Thanks,
 Mike

Re: Relative File Name

2003-02-15 Thread Mike Brown
Hi Scott,

I am not sure if this is what you were asking, but for getting files stored
in a folder relative to my stack I do the following.

I get the filename of my Rev stack or App and store the location in a
variable such as gStackLoc. You have to delete the last item of the
filename from the variable because that will be the actual name of your
stack. I do that by scripting:

Global gStackLoc
Put the filename of this stack into gStackLoc
Set the itemdelimiter to /
Delete the last item of gStackLoc

That way when I look for a file that is always stored in a folder relative
to my stack location I can add the path to the end the variable like this:

Get file gStackLoc /images/image1.gif

Or

Global gFileLoc
Put gStackLoc /images/image1.gif into gFileLoc
Get file gFileLoc

Maybe somebody out there has a simpler method for this, if not I hope this
info is helpful.

Mike

Linking to web sites and files from Mac OS X

2003-01-26 Thread Mike Brown
Hello,

I am looking for a method to link or connect to a web site (launch a web
browser) from my Rev stack from Mac OS X. I also want to be able to open or
launch a local file such as a PDF from my Rev stack. Up to now, I have been
using scripts that work on Windows and Mac OS 9.2. These methods do not
seem to work on OS X. Is that correct??

Just for reference, here is the method I have been using for Mac OS 9.2.

Opening a local PDF file:

get the platform
if it contains Mac then
launch gLocationHolder with gAppHolder
else
end if

Launching a browser to connect to a web site:

get the platform
if it contains Mac then
Put www.mywebsite.com into gWebHolder
send gWebHolder to program Finder with GURLGURL

Will these methods work on OS X??

Thanks!

I don't suppose there are other Rev functions for launching an App from all

A method for opening folders from Rev

2002-10-24 Thread Mike Brown
Just to put some closure on this issue, I was able to open a folder using
the following scripts that Ken Ray and John Nunez helped with:

Please Note: These scripts are for opening a pre-designated folder from
your Rev Stack or Standalone and will work from the Hard Drive or a CD-ROM.
If you want the user to select a folder, add the Answer Folder or File
method. These scripts also assume the folder path is relative to the
Standalone path like on a CD-ROM.

For Rev Stacks on Mac OS 8.6 - OS X:

on MouseUp
  global MyFolderPath
put the filename of this stack into MyFolderPath -- Gets the relative path
  set the itemdelimiter to/
delete the last item of MyFolderPath -- Deletes the name of your stack
put :FolderName after MyFolderPath -- adds your folder name
replace / with : in pAppPath -- makes path compatible with AppleScript
put tell application quote Finder quote cr \
  activate cr \
open folder quote MyFolderPath quote cr \
end tell into tScript -- Assembles AppleScript
do tScript as AppleScript -- Sends AppleScript to Mac OS
end MouseUp

For Rev Stacks on Win OS (98, ME, 2000,) Not tested on XP:

on Mouseup
  global MyFolderPath
put the filename of this stack into MyFolderPath
  set the itemdelimiter to/
delete the last item of MyFolderPath -- Deletes the name of your stack
put \FolderName after MyFolderPath -- adds your folder name
replace / with \ in MyFolderPath -- makes path compatible Windows
  set the hideConsoleWindows to true
get shell(start MyFolderPath) -- uses Windows console to open folder
end Mouseup

I hope this is helpful...

I found that replacing all / with : and eliminating the Macintosh HD

Re: Opening folders from Rev

2002-10-23 Thread Mike Brown
Hi Scott,

I'm using an absolute path to locate the folder (I use the filename function
to get it). That part works great. I test it by running the script through
a fld in the stack that displays the path. I can then copy that same path
and execute it from the Windows Run window or from an OS Window and it
will pop the folder open.

The get shell(start MyFolderPath) script works in a Rev Stack just
not in an Executable. I think I need an alternative method to the Start
portion of the script.

Thanks,

Sounds like you might be using a relative path to the folder, instead of an
absolute path. If this is the case, try establishing an absolute path to
 your folder ie c:/program files/myfolder.

Hi Ken,

I did try your script on Win 98 but without any luck.

The get shell(C:\Temp.lnk) part of the script doesn't seem to do

does not activate anything though.

Never thought it would be this tough to open a folder.

create alias C:/Temp.lnk to file pPath
 set the hideConsoleWindows to true
 get shell(C:\Temp.lnk)
 delete file C:/Temp.lnk

Well... I can now open folders from a Rev App on the Mac OS thanks to Ken
 Ray.

I thought I had a method for Windows using this method:

 get shell(start MyFolderPath)

This works great from a Rev file but not from a Standalone (.exe). For
 some
reason when I convert my stack to a standalone, this script no longer
 opens
my folder but launches another window with my standalone Application.
 This
can go on and on until the screen is full of multiple copies of my
 Standalone.

I suppose this is caused by the start command passing through my
 executable??

Does anyone have an alternate command to the Start or an alternate
 method
for opening folders in Windows OS from my Rev Standalone?

 Thanks,
 Mike

 Ken,

I did find through trial and error that this Apple Script works from
 both
the Script Editor and my Rev Stack:

 tell application Finder
 activate
 open folder Users:cyberny:Desktop:MyFolder

I found that replacing all / with : and eliminating the Macintosh

Does that make sense?? I will test further but it seems to work. I
 don't
know AppleScript so it's a bit sketchy.

Try putting the script into Apple's Script editor (sans all the

I'm burning a CD-ROM that will contain a Rev Stack/app as the Table of

folder containing documents. The CD will contain various folders containing
documents. I want to be able to click on button within my Rev Stack and
open a particular folder on the CD so that the documents may be manually

I do hope it is easy to do... I just can't find the method.

The Externals collection on the RunRev site appears to be somewhat
limited... it only has several features and I don't see the Open File as
one of them. The older MetaCard Externals collection does have the Open

One way to do this might be to use the Externals Collection on the RunRev

Re: More More Movie Difficulties

2002-07-14 Thread Mike Brown

Hi Jeanne,

Thanks for your response to my videoclip playback issue. I already tried
all of those recommendations in my last two weeks of investigating videoclip
display. I have spent a lot of time setting up test fields and test stacks
to identify the clip to be played. After trying every available codec and
testing across multiple platforms, the only format of video I have
personally been able to play back within Revolution is the .mov (Quicktime)
format.

This script only plays back .mov format:

on mouseup
   play videoclip moviename.avi
end mouseup

I am only looking for confirmation on this. If I create an .avi movie file
using the industry standard Media Cleaner Pro application in any
compression codec (intel indeo, cinepak, ir 2, sorenson, etc...), it will
not play back from Rev although the same clip will play back in MetaCard,
Windows Media Player, QuickTime and in some cases Real on both Mac and Win
OS.

Rev documentation offers very sparse info on movie play back but it does
list the ability to play back a .avi clip from the script I described.

I guess I though video playback through REV would be a hotter issue, but it
seems to be falling flat on the discussion list - so I apologize for
bringing it up again. I will be sure to list anything I find out about this
in the event somebody else experiences the same issues.

Thanks,
Mike

Are you using the same versions of both engines? (Check the version and
buildNumber properties in Rev and in MC to find out.)

Are you sure the videoclip is present in the stack? Look in the App
Overview, or else enter something like put the name of videoclip 1 in the

These are just the first questions I'd ask to try to track down the problem.

Avi-files run here without problems (on a Windows computer) and with Metacard
 or
Revolution both in the player object and with the play videoclip command.

Also, the videoclip need *not* be a part of the stack, it can be called with
play videoclip xy.avi from the current folder or any other folder if you
 add
 the path.

 Mike,

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that RR uses QT to play .avi
movies. In otherwords, without QuickTime, avi movies cannot be played. I
don't think RR or MC supports playback except through QT.

Re: More More Movie Difficulties

2002-07-09 Thread Mike Brown

Troy, on a Windows OS machine it would most likely use Windows Media Player.
I'm not sure though - somebody at Rev could better answer that question.
You can test the theory by implementing the script in a MetaCard stack and
playing back on a Win OS PC without QuickTime Installed. I created several
presentations this way.

Hi Klaus,
With QT you will have excellent playback in RR and
lots of possibilities to control the movie (more than a simple start and
 stop...)

I agree with you QT is the best but unfortunately is not widely supported
within the Win OS world. I need a fairly dependable format for a
presentation distributed to Win users.

I will ask around and see if QT is pre-installed with XP OS...

Thanks,

first there is nothing like a best format ;-)

It depends on the situation, hardware etc...

But in general i can say that i have the best results when using
the QuickTIme format with its wonderful codecs.

Of course this demands QT to be installed on the system.
I think it is already pre-installed on XP... Is it ?

With QT you will have excellent playback in RR and
lots of possibilities to control the movie (more than a simple start and

And QT supports lots of different file-types. So you can put avi, mpg,
 swf (yes, Flash !)
and mov into a player and it will play.

(Not to mention the sound and image formats that are supported by QT,
but that is another story... :-)

That's why i choose QT for playback of video-footage in RR/MC.

 Hope that helps...
