Re: [OT] Cross Mac Platform Text Editing
Rob, Perhaps I'm going at this the wrong way but I think the problem must be related to the transfer. In the last couple years I've repeatedly moved from OS X to classic to OS 9 on the same computer and had no trouble opening AppleWorks 6 docs and Microsoft Word docs in any of the three platforms, created in any of the three platforms. Of course straight text files might be another issue, I have no experience there. Apple has apparently still not decided what to do with creator codes (and the entire resource fork, for that matter). Currently in OS X the creator code (if one exists) gets precedence over the file extension (if one exists). I am surprised moving the file by CD did not work. Just a note, on the file transfer problems I mentioned previously with flash cards stripping the resource fork; I did find transfers from OS 9 to OS X worked better than transfers made the other way. OS X also includes invisible files with file transfers (like ds_store) which become visible in OS 9. This is a real nightmare when you create automatic loading plugins in OS X and transfer them to OS 9 (Revolution will try to load the now visible ds_store as one of the plugins). Hope some of this helps you. Paul Looney ___ use-revolution mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution
Re: [OT] Cross Mac Platform Text Editing
How are you moving the files? Hi Paul, The latest action that triggered my post dealt with text files loaded from a CD burned on OS 10.2 onto an OS 9 platform. I believe I have previously dragged the same (Serendipity Library language translation) files across an Ethernet LAN with the same result; but I'll try it again... Just did: nova (as in "no go")--Dragged the file across the LAN, and it looks just the same as the one loaded from CD. File Type/Creator appear to be empty; but if I type four characters into each field without selecting & deleting File Type, ResEdit tells me there are invisible characters in the field. Now in this case, I saved the file three times: once a rich text with no extension, once with text only & a ".txt" extension, and once with text-only and no extension. And the later files did show Type/Creator as "TEXTttxt." But this disturbs me more: files saved with no extension on OS X show up in OS 9 with ".rtf" or ".txt" extensions depending on how the file was saved. Have I ever mentioned how much I HATE O/S's doing things like this (and the OS X app bundle) "behind my back"? What's more, if I go to the OS 9 machine, strip the extension from the file, and attempt to drag it back to the OS X box, the OS 9 directory shows the file as a 4K SimpleText file; but the directory listing on OS X shows the file as 0 KB, with no Kind or Date Modified info. What the hey is Apple doing here? -- Rob Cozens CCW, Serendipity Software Company http://www.oenolog.net/who.htm "And I, which was two fooles, do so grow three; Who are a little wise, the best fooles bee." from "The Triple Foole" by John Donne (1572-1631) ___ use-revolution mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution
Re: [OT] Cross Mac Platform Text Editing
Text edit for Mac OS 9 has a 32 kb file limit. Thanks, Wouter; but that's not my problem. The TextEdit file appears to have some non-displayable File Type/Creator pair when opened in Mac OS9. AppleWorks shows the file in an answer file dialog; but says it can't translate the file...which WAS formatted as text-only. Both AW & Teach Text will open the file after the Type & Creator are changed; however my Code Warrior editor still won't show the file in an answer file dialog.
Rob, How are you moving the files? I have found that using these otherwise wonderful flash card USB devices tend to strip the resource fork off files (especially when copying to them in classic). If this is the problem, try using a crossover cable or, if both computers have firewire start one of them in target disk mode (restart it with the "T" key down, it will come up with the firewire symbol floating around the screen, the other computer will recognize it as just another firewire hard drive, when finished restart the target to turn it back into a computer again). Re: [OT] Cross Mac Platform Text Editing
Thanks to all who responded. Since posting, I used ResEdit on OS 9 to look at the file coming from OS 10. Both file type & creator look empty; however if I type into the file type without selecting & deleting, I'm told there are extra characters in the field. I set the file type & creator to "TEXTttxt", and AppleWorks V5 can now open the file; but Code Warrior's text editor won't show the file even though it shows other (non TextEdit) files with the same Type/Creator set. My main goal, being able to move a text file from OS X to OS 9 and edit it without having to modify it first, remains elusive.

Is there a recommended cross Mac platform text editor? [Preferably something without "Microsoft" in its pedigree.] Rob Cozens I use free BBEdit Lite which, whilst being technically "discontinued", is still available for download at: http://www.barebones.com/products/bblite/index.shtml and works well with Mac OS Classic up to and including Mac OS 9.2.2 and also with Mac OS X from 10.1 to 10.3.2! Of course, the full BBEdit is very good, but also expensive at $179. I use TextPad on the PC, which costs a very reasonable $29, and can be downloaded from: http://www.textpad.com/ BBEdit (Lite or Full) and TextPad cope well with Mac, PC and Unix text files.
