Well, the web site says versions are available for Windows and OS X, so I

2005-10-19 Thread Jerry Daniels
What an EXCELLENT question. One I answered for Rishi in a separate
email.

Constellation MAY work on Linux...we just don't have the requests for
it or the testers for it--testers being the real missing link. If we
can line up the resources (human), then we can get started.

Who knows? It may work first time!

Re: ANN: Constellation Script Property Editor 1.0.0 Released

2005-10-17 Thread Dan Shafer
Constellation began life at the Revolution Masters Summit in Monterey
two summers ago when we were all kicking around Rev IDE replacements.
Some of us were bemoaning the absence of an IDE for Rev that would
look and behave more like a multi-pane, single-environment
development tool a la Smalltalk. Jerrry caught the vision and now, at
long last, he is shipping Constellation.

I've been one of the early testers on this baby from the beginning
and I have to say that I really, really, REALLY like it. A lot. You
can spend an entire development cycle in Constellation and never
leave it. You'll also never have to dork around with dozens of open
windows and palettes getting lost behind each other. The fact that
Rev *still* hasn't fixed the stupid backdrop capability so it works
well in their IDE is a non-issue because with Constellation as your
IDE, you never have to worry about losing things in the confusion of
the window-filled screen. And yet, with multiple tabs available, you
can have multiple stacks, cards, or other objects open and switch
between then with great ease.

Once you get used to developing in Constellation, it's hard to go
back to the piecemeal, disjointed-feeling approach taken by the Rev
IDE. And I can guarantee you that Constellation has fewer quirks and
bugs and anomalies than the Rev IDE. I sometimes work for several
hours in Constellation on a project -- even once or twice on multiple
projects -- and never get lost. Truly amazing.

Give it a whirl, but give it enough of a chance to get your arms
around it. It's as powerful as the Rev IDE in almost every way and
it's easier to use but it does require you to undo some of the Rev
IDE thinking you've grown accustomed to.

For me, Constellation is as big a leap forward as was finding
Revolution in the first place.

I have been using it now for just a few days and had to buy a copy
for a friend. It is truly amazing to work with. I feel my
productivity increase on the same level as the beauty of transcript.
I think it is a must have for everyone that uses Rev on a daily
basis. Get the other gadgets while you are there because it brings
out the extra productivity in Constellation. I really like
inspection gadget and object gadget. Tie those together with the
free gadget bar and you have a totally useful IDE for Rev!

Congrats Jerry! I am only sorry that I did not adopt the tools earlier.

Congratulations on the Release of Constellation 1.0 Jerry!

Testimonial:
I have used this product during the public pre-release phase as the
face of Transcript. I have been impressed with Jerry's dedication to
fixing bugs and adding suggested features --sometimes within hours of
the report. That's customer service!

I spend 99% of my programming time in the Constellation script
editor. I like it a lot, and it keeps getting better. I am not a
professional programmer --I only use DreamCard at this point.
However, I have found Jerry's Gadget Suite to be a real help while
programming in Revolution.

I am glad I got involved early and I anticipate a growing delight
with each new future release.

Thanks and keep up the good work Jerry!

OK. I'm in. Got my spankin' new Constellation IDE.

Rev's power, and a stylin' interface with a lot of good thought behind
it. Nice combo. From kicking the tires it seems really sweet. Now...
gotta take it for a spin.

And thanks Jerry. This puts a whole new perspective on things.

Re: ANN: Constellation Script Property Editor 1.0.0 Released

2005-10-16 Thread Chipp Walters

Jerry,

Congratulations...thought that baby would never drop:-)

For those of you who don't know, Constellation has been in development
for well over a year. It's certainly a labor of love for the time he's
put into it (multiple hours every day). I guarantee there's not another
Rev programmer who knows more about the ins and outs of the Rev IDE than
Jerry.

It's definitely worth a hard look if you're a serious Rev user. And
while I do appreciate Rev's updates and bug fixes once a quarter or so,
Jerry does it with his auto-updating architecture multiple times a week.
So, if you do run across a problem, a quick email with recipe to Jerry
and chances are you'll have a fix the next day. That's service!
