anything to achieve TTS in the various supported unix flavors?

Perhaps, but I KNOW it's been discussed on list before... and I think
there's even some sort of tech note/read me kinda thing that acknowledges
the problem/issue... and that it was being fixed?

It was listed as a known issue in the previous release.  That would seem to 
indicate it was something Runrev was working on and wouldn't need to be 
entered into bugzilla...
