Re: Does anyone have the skill to fix jodconverter?

@Robert .docx and .txt files can both be imported.

POI would be more like a long term alternative, to convert documents into
HTML, which then could be edited.
However there is a long way to go to reach that goal.
And you would still need some converters to handle all those fancy new file
extensions and convert them into a format that POI understands.
Wave has not document converter capibilities, AFAIK they can edit some
document collaborative in a wiki style. But not to the extend that you can
drop in some .doc or .xls and then work together on it.

2013-03-29 Thread Robert Chalmers
@Sebastian,
Is there an actual list of what can be converted via the upload to the
whiteboard?
It won't convert text files, nor .docx files.
I'll have to experiment more.
Thanks for the detail, it's interesting.

Re: Does anyone have the skill to fix jodconverter?

2013-03-29 Thread seba.wag...@gmail.com
Which means that the JODConverter tool is no more maintained, it does not
mean that it is broken.

You have to keep in mind what JODConvert actually is:
It is nothing else then a wrapper library to call the OpenOffice Service
(or LibreOffice Service). Nothing else.
It will not improve anything in the convertion itself if you do replace
that library with something else.
There are a lot of tools and libraries out there that basically do the same.
But at the moment the JODConvert is doing just fine from my point of view.
And it does even automatically start and stop the OpenOffice (or
LibreOffice Service) and you can set a custom home directory where
JODConverter will look for the executable.

So in a sense you are of course right, on a long term we have to see what
other alternatives are there.
But facing that there is also a lot of discussion in the Apache OpenOffice
project about providing such a library AS-IS (which means we would not need
any third party libraries) I see no need to put currently time into
replacing a tool or library that does actually works just fine.
