Hi,

That's not correct, you can snapshot (back up) root and data disks from the
Storage UI, you just can't snapshot the VM as a whole.
Go in Global Settings and enable KVM snapshots (no idea why this is disabled by
default)..

Hi Sam, good to hear you want to take cloudstack for a tour :)

If you want to encapsulate everything (cloudstack management and hypervisor
used to spawn VMs) within a VM.

There are different ways to do this:

DevCloud: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/DevCloud

It's pre-packaged and baring a few caveats, you will get CloudStack running
quickly. However it's a Xen kernel.

If you are a KVM guy: the easiest way to do this would be to use vmware
workstation or fusion to take advantage of hardware virtu. You can then use KVM
directly within the VM and setup CloudStack for testing. You can then follow
this guide:
http://cloudstack.apache.org/docs/en-US/Apache_CloudStack/4.1.1/html/qig/index.html
to setup everything on your own. Someone did it the other day in 20 minutes.

CS Storage best practices

I would like to know what kind of storage do you recommend or prefer to

Which important point should we be meticulous on for the primary (i.e

Re: CS Storage best practices

Hello Pascal ,

Primary storage depend what you want or offer, if you have a money get fc
hba get fc storage or use ssd storages for high performance
If you need automation use supported storages like netapp , solid fire
If you are open to open world use ceph could be very interesting with
QEMU/KVM

About secondary storage use and nfs storage linux or official ones
Another options S3 interfaced storages

You can use basho riak cs

Myself we will use nfs server for secondary optimising s3 based storage
could be problem (for now, no experiences i have)

Re: Guest VMs not able to acquire DHCP IP from Virtual Router unless Guest and VR are on the same KVM host

2013-11-18 Thread Adam
Hi David,

Thanks for the reply.

I just did some more troubleshooting and I can definitely see using
dhcpdump on the VR that it only receives a DHCPREQUEST when the Guest VM is
on the same KVM Host. If I migrate the guest to any other KVM Host that
request never even makes it to the VR. I monitored the physical KVM host
running the VR, but it never registered the DHCPREQUEST regardless of where
the guest VM was running.

I even turned off the firewall on both KVM Hosts and still no DHCPREQUEST.

There actually is another physical DHCP server on the same network. *10.97.38.1
Router DHCP*

However we (corporate IT Admin) have blocked off a range of IPs
{10.97.38.[110 -170]} from the 10.97.38.1 Router DHCP and filtered out
any DHCPREQUESTS made by a '06' MAC address per these instructions (written
by you I believe):

http://open.citrix.com/blog/42-tip-of-the-month-external-dhcp-server-and-cloudstack-on-the-same-network.html

So that tells me that we probably did something wrong on the router and
it's got to be the 10.97.38.1 Router/Switch/DHCP server that's stopping
those requests from ever reaching the built in VR, but I have no visibility
into that unfortunately so I cannot continue to test. I need to be able to
give very precise instructions to my IT Admin on what to check.

Thoughts?

*dhcpdump from VR when Guest VM is on same KVM Host:*

Re: ACS 4.2 Error adding S3/Ceph secondary storage

2013-11-18 Thread Min Chen
Andrei, that is not true. CS will not automatically copy all the data from
existing NFS to the new NFS added, only for those templates that are
cross-zone. NFS to S3 migration is not done that way either, actually is
done on demand. Please see
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Migration+of+NFS+Sec
ondary+Storage+to+Object+Store for detailed implementation in 4.2.1.

Thanks

Guys, please correct me if I am wrong.

That means one of the zones in your setup may be having NFS as the
 secondary storage
provider. Make sure that none of the zones use NFS for secondary
storage
 if you want to use
 S3 .

Here is what I've done on each virtual router:

apt-get update
apt-get install snmpd
apt-get install snmp
apt-get install snmp-mibs-downloader
chkconfig --add snmpd
chkconfig snmpd on

vi /etc/default/snmpd

SNMPDOPTS='-Lsd -Lf /dev/null -u snmp -I -p /var/run/snmpd.pid 0.0.0.0'

mv /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf.org

vi /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf

rocommunity snmpstring
syslocation location
syscontact contact

service snmpd restart

iptables -A INPUT -s [sourceip] -p udp --dport 161 -m state --state
NEW,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT

vi /etc/rc.local
iptables -A INPUT -s [sourceip] -p udp --dport 161 -m state --state

this does work if the router is rebooted but does not if the router is rebuilt.

 Cloudmonkey CLI works well

 Any ideas?

Are you using multiple Cloudstack management servers with load balancing? I
recall
similar issues when the sessions were not made sticky.

Regards.

Subject: Bare Metal Docs for 4.2.0?

Looking at the release notes it looks like Bare Metal guests are back from
their hiatus!

Looking around however, I'm not seeing any documentation for this as of yet. Is
there any documentation available and if so, where can it be found as it's not
on the official documentation portion of the website.

RE: System VMs cannot get up

Hi,

Check the reachability from System VMs to management server. Also check port
8250 is allowed on management server.

Thanks,

Subject: System VMs cannot get up

Hi.

I have setup CloudStack in the way that management server is running on a VM on
a KVM/QEMU host and used management server as NFS server as well.
System VMS show running in both UI and through virsh command line. However they
are not reachable and cannot open their console. I tried to get into their
console via virt-manager but it asks for password. Also in the UI, agent status
for system VMs is empty. (up is not displayed). I think I'm doing wrong with my
networking setup.

Please help me.
TIA

Can you also check if the global config parameter host is set to your
management server IP address, otherwise agent won't be able to reach the MS.
