Thanks Giles, I saw the one for 25% off on twitter but now I’m definitely sold.

I don’t think your VMs would be impacted during the upgrade. YMMV

Re: Disk IO on Cloudstack VMs

2014-03-06 Thread Carlos Reátegui
Nishan,
How did you originally setup your networks? Did you do it all through
XenCenter, xe CLI, OS? I believe I did it all through XC. I am running XS
6.0.2 with CS 4.1. Did you switch to bridge networking? I did not as it only
supports 2 nic bonds.

My hosts are set up with 4x1Gbe bond for NAS network (storage label) and 4x1Gbe
bond for CS Management/CS Storage/CS Guest (cloud-public label). Both bonds
are active active. I am using basic networking but without security groups
since that requires bridge networking. Security is not really an issue for
this setup as it is used internally by QA and dev.

On one of my hosts:
# dd if=/dev/zero of=test.dmp bs=1M conv=fdatasync count=1000
1000+0 records in
1000+0 records out
1048576000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 9.97504 seconds, 105 MB/s

On a CentOS 5 guest:
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/test.dmp bs=1M conv=fdatasync count=1000
1000+0 records in
1000+0 records out
1048576000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 13.1997 seconds, 79.4 MB/s

On an ubuntu 12.04 guest:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=test.dmp bs=1M conv=fdatasync count=1000
1000+0 records in
1000+0 records out
1048576000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 9.85764 s, 106 MB/s

I tried the above a handful of times on each and they were within a couple % of
each other every time. Both of the guests are on the same host I tested above.
The SR is on NFS on the same machine as the CS Management stack (Ubuntu
12.04). That machine is connected to the storage via 10Gbe and a 2x1Gbe bond
to the cloud-public network. No routes exist between these 2 networks. MTU is
1500 for both networks. I have another setup at a different location where I
set the MTU to 9000 and I seem to remember getting a bit faster throughput at
least on the hosts. I’ll check later and let you know.

Let me know if there is anything you want me to check in my setup to compare.

Carlos

Upgrade from CS 4.2.0 to CS 4.2.1

2014-03-06 Thread Du Jun
Hi all,

I intend to upgrade from CS 4.2.0 to CS 4.2.1. I already have some VMs
running in CS 4.2.0, how can I upgrade from CS 4.2.0 to CS 4.2.1 without
affecting the VMs.

PS: CS 4.2.0 with KVM hypervisor is installed in Ubuntu12.04.

Hi Shankar,

10% overhead for virtual disk seems reasonable.
My VM is PV and I've installed xenserver tools as well. But still getting
20Mbps where as on the host its 150Mbps.

Have you tuned up your VM or changed any parameters?

Nishan

Adding new Primary Storage

2014-03-06 Thread Nick Wales
If primary NFS storage gets added to a cluster with insufficient privileges
for the host to write then the host will reboot.

This could be a problem! Is there a method to test 100% that it wont
happen.

Re: prevent disks from being created on primary storage volume

2014-03-06 Thread Nitin Mehta
I think CS should have the ability to enable/disable a storage pool just
like we have it for hosts/clusters/pods/zones. Disabling it just disables
the pool for further vm allocation.
It would great if you could open an enhancement for the same in JIRA.

Re: Custom billing Application using CloudStack API

2014-03-06 Thread John Kinsella
I was avoiding the convo and looking forward to the Denver talk, but since HB
was directly mentioned...

We use Hostbill…opinions are mixed, mostly because they encrypt the php code so
we can’t easily modify things. We are not yet using the metered billing
functionality.

Hostbill’s management are engineers with little business sense, and
unfortunately frequently rub customers the wrong way, as a result customers
have created their own forums[1] I think when hb shut down the ones they used
to run. They’re quick to respond, the the product is constantly gaining new
functionality, so there are a lot of positives about the product.

Actually, browsing around, I see they charge new customers for the CS module
now…sigh.

What I’d say is if you’re looking to run a clean/simple public IaaS and need a
customer control panel/billing solution, consider HB. If you expect to need
more functionality than on their CS page [2], at some point it’ll be better to
build in-house.

I’d love to see a solid open-source replacement for things like WHMCS/Hostbill,
but this is one of those areas where companies tend to build in-house.

RE: prevent disks from being created on primary storage volume

2014-03-06 Thread Geoff Higginbottom
Hi Len,

As Saksham has highlighted, using Storage Tags is the way to achieve this.

1. Apply tags to the Primary Storage (both this one and the alternate you still
want to use)
2. Assuming you have not been using storage tags, update the compute and
storage offerings with the new tags, excluding the tags applied to the storage
you want to stop from being used by new VMs/Volumes
3. For good measure, for the VMs which you are happy to continue using this
storage, I would create some new offerings using the appropriate tags, and
apply them to the existing VMs/Volumes

You can try adding tags on primary storage you want to use, and use the same

Hi Guys,

Is it possible to prevent new disks from being created on a particular primary
storage volume? I'm using NFS storage.

I don't want to stop the instances that are currently using it, just prevent
any more disks from being created there.

Thanks

Hi Juan,

My experience is merely a case of looking on the Hostbill website I'm
afraid. I have a feeling that the solution may be subject to some
limitations - I'm not sure how it handles resources that aren't originally
provisioned by the Hostbill interface, and there's a noticeable lack of
info on provisioning and billing for VPCs and advanced networking but
perhaps not an issue for you. The demos I've seen seem to be focussed on
using Cloudstack as a basic VPS hosting platform. Unfortunately that's
about the extent of the insight I can offer. Search for "Hostbill
Cloudstack" and you'll find a few demos with screenshots on their site.

If anyone has looked into this in greater detail, I too would be keen to
hear about your experiences.

xenserver 6.1 offline coalesce

2014-03-06 Thread William Jiang
Hi Guys,

I used cloudstack 4.1 + xenserver 6.1. I need do some offline coalesce for vms
as I saw the used space on primary storage is high that allocated space. (ie:
14262.1 GB used of 14469.1 GB total (8992.1 GB allocated))

Do anyone know if "xe host-call-plugin host-uuid=host-UUID plugin=coalesce-leaf
fn=leaf-coalesce args:vm_uuid=VM-UUID" is still available in xenserver 6.1? As
I know it works well in xenserver 5.6 for offline coalesce.

Thanks,
William

RE: Custom billing Application using CloudStack API

2014-03-06 Thread Adrian Lewis

Adrian

Cloudstack in South Africa

2014-03-06 Thread TommyBW
Hi Giles,

Not quite South Africa but close. I am in Botswana, Gaborone, about 400km from
Johannesburg. Well I am just getting into CS and Xenserver. I am also building
a small cloud datacenter based on cloudstack and Xenserver. My equipment is
still coming in. I am also looking at providing solutions around Cloudstack.

I have quite a number of years in the IT industry, over 15. Specialising in HP
storage arrays, HP Servers and blade systems, Virtualisation, Mainly VMware but
also moving into OVM, KVM and Xenserver. For my datacenter I will be building
my own storage servers based on Infiniband SAN and ZFS.

So just keep me in mind when meet ups happen in SA.

Kind regards

Tommy Sosa
