Hi Martin,

Are you trying to configure PF on SourceNAT IP address? If yes can you check
whether the conserver mode is set to "Yes" in your network offering?

Hi!

I created an isolated network (with GRE) on Cloudstack 4.4.1. Then I tried to
configure a port forwarding rule for SSH to an instance. But I get an error
message "is already used as SourceNat rather than PortForwarding".
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Re: XenServer

2014-10-30 Thread Nux!
Andrei, I am hopeful the next incarnation of XenServer will be much
better/modern, with support for CEPH, GlusterFS etc.

Re KVM snapshotting, KVM can do live snapshots of the volumes+memory (you can
do it with "virsh"), but ACS doesn't support it; forgot why.

Re: XenServer

2014-10-30 Thread Andrei Mikhailovsky
I would happily switch to XenServer once they will have ceph support. I do
prefer XenServer and the feature list of ACS + XenServer is a bit better.

It sucks not having proper snapshotting in KVM where one can create the whole
vm snapshot (volumes + memory) very quickly without the need to bother
snapshotting every volume and wait for ages.

Oh, thank you so much, folks, for your replies on this topic! Now I understand
that I shouldn't migrate to XenServer, as I already have a bunch of hosts
running KVM and it really won't be a good idea to bread such a zoo.

The only thing that makes me feel envy is an ability to change configuration of
a virtual machine without restarting it. As I know, KVM doesn't support it yet,
am I right? Other XenServer features don't seem to be so exciting to me :)

One more time - thanks to all who have helped me to decide not to do something
that I would regret.

Re: running pre and/or post scripts after instance creation/destroy

2014-10-30 Thread Erik Weber
Do you have ssh keys or any other means to access the servers automatically?

What I'm thinking is that you could deploy the rabbitmq event notification
message queue, and listen for create/destroy calls.

I don't think you would be able to intercept the create call and alter it's
runtime, but you could theoretically fire up a script that fetches the one
time password, ssh into the vm and issues whatever command you need to
register the vm with IPA.

How you enable event notification varies on your cloudstack version, but
this should be a pointer in the right direction:

Re: running pre and/or post scripts after instance creation/destroy

2014-10-30 Thread Yiping Zhang
I envision to run these pre/post scripts on CS management server. These
scripts can be in any of languages such as shell/ruby/python/java.

Here is our use case:

We¹d like to automatically register new instances in RedHat IPA server
(something like windows nodes auto joining an AD domain when it is
provisioned), and unregister an instance when it is destroyed. So it seems
the best way to achieve this is by using pre/post scripts at appropriate
steps during an instance¹s life cycle.

Here are roughly the steps of registering new instance to IPA:
1. User create a new instance in CS web UI
2. CS server (thru a pre-create script) tell IPA a new host is coming and
generate an one time password for that host (this one time password could
be save d as user data and passed to instance)
3. CS server creates new instance
4. New Instance registers itself with IPS, using one time password
generated in step 2)

Here are roughly steps of unregister an instance from IPA:
1. User destroys an instance from CS web UI.
2. CS server destroys instance.
3. CS server (thru a post-destroy script) tells IPA to unregister the
destroyed instance.

Is this doable ?

Re: Status: update from 4.4.0 -> 4.4.1 still broken ?

2014-10-30 Thread Pierre-Luc Dion
upgrading from 4.4.0 really required this manual db patch:
ALTER TABLE `snapshot_policy` ADD `display` TINYINT( 1 ) NOT > NULL
DEFAULT '1'

?
If so we will update the RN..

Re: Status: update from 4.4.0 -> 4.4.1 still broken ?

2014-10-30 Thread motty cruz
Hi Vadim,
I finally was able to upgrade successfully Cloudstack 4.4.0 to Cloudstack
4.4.1. I used this guider:
http://cloudstack-release-notes.readthedocs.org/en/latest/upgrade/upgrade-4.4.html

Download System VMs from here: http://cloudstack.apt-get.eu/systemvm/4.4/
I specifically used this:
http://cloudstack.apt-get.eu/systemvm/4.4/systemvm64template-4.4.1-xen.vhd.bz2

instead of the one suggested in the guide.

Also, I executed the following two command:
yum upgrade cloudstack-management
once that finished successfully
yum update (updates java)

This also failed for me:

nohup cloudstack-sysvmadm -d IPaddress -u cloud -p password -a >
sysvm.log 2>&1 &

but I run that command any way:

Also I log in to my database server:

ALTER TABLE `snapshot_policy` ADD `display` TINYINT( 1 ) NOT > NULL
DEFAULT '1'

restarted management server and all worked.

Hope this help you!
ThanksMotty

GRE isolated network: wrong interface?

2014-10-30 Thread Martin Emrich
Hi!

Hi!

I'm having more strange issues with my GRE-based isolated networks:

While investigating my other issues, I noticed this output from "ovs-vsctl
show" on the xenservers:

   Bridge "xapi29"
fail_mode: standalone
Port "t1546-4-3"
Interface "t1546-4-3"
type: gre
options: {key="1546", remote_ip="10.33.2.6"}
Port "vif28.0"
Interface "vif28.0"
Port "xapi29"
Interface "xapi29"
type: internal

I wonder why this IP address for the GRE tunnel was chosen? The IP belongs to
one of my iSCSI storage networks, and should never be used for guest or public
traffic.
While thinking about it, I noticed that I never assigned IP addresses to the
"correct" guest interfaces (neither via XenServer nor via cloudstack), as the
documentation did not mention it... but of course GRE won't work without IP
connectivity between the OpenVSwitch instances on the XenServers.

So I wonder why CloudStack (or XenServer?) chose one of the iSCSI networks for
GRE traffic instead of e.g. printing an error message or chosing at least the
management network...

I also see that the OVSTunnelXXX networks on the XenServer cluster are not
removed when I remove a Network from CloudStack, so during my experiments some
stale OVSTunnel interface pile up on the cluster.

Ciao

Martin

Hi Rohit,

I currently did some preflight checks, and noticed distro/release
incompatibilities against Wido's specific packages. (Something you
already mentioned in your mail)

At least package dependencies are problematic (e.g. mysql-client vs.
mysql-client-5.5 vs mariadb-client).

Anyway, thank's for offering your packages even if I currently can't use
them.

cheers,

Hi Stephan,

We recently made our CloudStack packages repositories. We use the default
process to build deb/rpms but we don’t build debs/rpms for specific
distro/release but as general APT/YUM repository. It’s recommended to test run
upgrades on a test setup using the new repository. You may read more here:

Running the management-node on Ubuntu 14.04 and following the documented
update procedure (which leads to something easy as apt-get upgrade),
I've noticed that there are no packages for 4.4.1 available at

Did I miss something? Or is it just not released yet?

Ian,

thanks for your suggestion. I was not aware of shapeblue's repo.

Since I'm a little short on spare-systems for testing and do not know
how well these repos mix, I think I'll wait for Wido's packages.

If I'm getting impatient, I'll start an "off-site" side-project with

RE: XenServer

2014-10-30 Thread Vadim Kimlaychuk
I would also add a point about networking - hypervisors use different approach
for traffic labelling. We tried to combine Xen and KVM within one zone of
"advanced networking" and failed. KVM has to have different bridges for
public/private networking while Xen uses one bridge per-physical NIC. If you
separate traffic types by physical NICs with different labels you probably can
put both hypervisors in the same Zone.

Hi,

Performance between xs and kvm is similar, imho it should not be a reason to
change, this goes for most other hypervisors. You will just make your setup
even more complex and harder to maintain and troubleshoot.
Don't do it.

Just make sure in all cases you use paravirtual drivers in your guests and
they'll run just fine (it's called virtio for KVM, most OSes support it - linux
and the BSDs out of the box, windows requires drivers installed).

If I were to migrate to xs I'd do it for the feature set, like VM snapshot and
live migration (without the need of shared storage that is); on the other hand
you will lose the power of having a proper OS as your hypervisor with all that
entails; hence you will also lose the ability to use
GFS/CePH/Glusterfs/CLVM/anysharedmountpoint/etc, the same goes for memory
deduplication (KSM).

My philosophy is pick one hypervisor and stick with it, test the hell out of it
until your setup is solid and you can control it.

The IP is already used as SourceNat rather than PortForwarding

2014-10-30 Thread Martin Emrich
Hi!

I created an isolated network (with GRE) on Cloudstack 4.4.1. Then I tried to
configure a port forwarding rule for SSH to an instance. But I get an error
message "is already used as SourceNat rather than PortForwarding".
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Hi,

I haven't heard anything about any fixes, but I don't think it's worth spending
too much time over it, there is a simple workaround.

http://www.nux.ro/archive/2014/01/Taking_KVM_volume_snapshots_with_Cloudstack_4_2_on_CentOS_6_5.html

CentOS 7 will not be affected by it whenever ACS will support it.

RE: Best practive for public cloud isolation method ?

2014-10-30 Thread Vadim Kimlaychuk
No, we use only software VR. Client "reserves" IP from the pool and assigns to
VM it wants. Cloudstack manages it well. I guess you may partition the public
IP range for every client separately, but haven't tried to do it.

Hi,

I would also like to hear more about best practices for network
architecture, but so far have found only VLAN isolation described more or less
thoroughly.
1. We have recently set up VLANs and didn't fill the limit yet. :) GRE
is one of the options, but can't say how it works. Haven't even tried yet.
Would be interesting indeed.
2. We use VPC-s only. To enable guest VM to be on public IP we just do
SNAT for those who need it. If guest is under "soft LB network offer" then you
may need port forwarding, but not sure for 100%. It is better probably to add
another network offer go guest VM to enable SNAT.

Subject: Best practive for public cloud isolation method ?

Hi guys,

I'm asking somewhat dump question and generic one, since I'm designing new
public cloud infrastructure:

We are about to go with KVM, Advanced zone vlan/vxlan/other isolation method,
ACS 4.4.1 or possibly revert back to 4.3. We plan on using VPC extensively and
still provide let's call it "VPS" style VMs if possible.

So:

1. Per your experience, what is the best isolation method to be used for Guest
traffic - I'm talking here about usability of the solution, productional one:
-- vlans - works fine, limited to theoretical maximum of 4095
-- vxlan - don't really work fine for public cloud, since default MTU of
1500 bytes is lowered on vxlan bridge/interface to be 1450 bytes so the MTU
inside VM must be also lowered...1450 bytes MTU is default/hardcoded into
iproute/cloudstack, with no option to choose larger MTU on vxlan
interface/bridge (and ask ADMIN to adjust MTU to a larger one on physical
network) - also this does not allow us to use jumbo frames, but would be a
really good thing to do.
-- GRE - I'm just evaluating/researching this

2. Another quetion - since we want to go heavily with VPC, but still want to be
able to provide let's call it "VPS" style VMs - what is the best aproach to do
so?
We already have Shared/Guest network with access to Internet - so this is the
way we acomplished single VM to be on a public IP network.
Or is it better to really dump the VPS style, and just go with normal VPC with
port forwarding to internal VM - I'm just not so clear if/how much CloudStack
was designed to support this kind of "VPS" style VMs - my understanding is that
the focus is really cloud-like/VPC functionality, and not VPS style, at least
not on Advanced zone together with VPCs - so any advice is really welcomed.

My experience with vlans is that it works like charm, but has it's limitations.
Vxlans experience is fine if you can control MTU inside VMs - not good for
public cloud...

Again, generic questions, but I'm looking into some hints if possible and your
experience that you are wiling to share

Thanks,

Snapshotting broken on Centos 6.5

Hi guys,

snapshoting is broken on CentOS 6.5 - because RedHat removed the "-s" flag

being used in latest ACS 4.4.1.

Is this going to be fixed any time soon, or what are the plan's for this ?

The -i is used as the host IP by CloudStack management server, among other
things this is especially used by systemvms to connect to mgmt server. So, if
you’re load balancing using netscaler, use the netscaler IP. Make sure to
configure ports 8080, 8250 appropriately. Make sure all the ACS mgmt servers
(primary/first one and others) can connect to mysql server from their
respective IPs.

Sure.

Since, both the management servers are loadbalancing internal calls, you’ll see
these a lot. You may plan your log storage appropriately or configure log4j xml
to not log INFO/DEBUG etc.

So when doing a "cloudstack-setup-databases" with "-i 192.168.0.100" i have

Yes the management server was crashed, for the moment i don't have the

As soon i'm getting back to this mgmt server pool, i give you more infos.

I'm going to reinstall some fresh mgmt servers and give you more feedback.

Concerning the mgmt server log entries "Resp: Routing to peer", is it
normal that the mgmt server is producing so much log entries with this

Thanks for your response.

Thanks Geoff. I thought so myself. I need to speak to the security chaps
to prepare a VLAN that isn't controlled by our edge FW.

RE: Public Network Question

2014-10-30 Thread Geoff Higginbottom
Hi Osay,

Your Public Traffic needs to be exactly that, 'Public' - It is supposed to be
Public IPs directly connected to the Internet without any Firewalls in the way.
The Virtual Router is the Firewall for each Isolated Guest Network.

Subject: Public Network Question

Hi,
I'm setting up an advanced zone on ACS 4.3 but have hit a block with the public
network. Our setup is as follows:

Internet --> FW->L2/L3 switch--->ACS management &
XS62 hosts (192.168.44.x)
196.5.20.x/24|->Public
network (192.168.77.x)

|->Guest (192.168.33.x)

My problem is that I our secrurity chaps say they can't NAT the 196.5.20.x IPs
to the the 192.168.77.x network so that clients from the Internet can access
their VMs. How do I configure this in ACS so that clients can use one of the
196.5.20.x IPs to access VMs?

Any ideas will be much welcome.

Kind regards,

Osay

ACS 4.4.1 DEB Packages not yet available?

2014-10-30 Thread Stephan Seitz
Hi!

after reading the "4.4.0 -> 4.4.1"-thread on the list, I think I'm
prepared for an Update.

Running the management-node on Ubuntu 14.04 and following the documented
update procedure (which leads to something easy as apt-get upgrade),
I've noticed that there are no packages for 4.4.1 available at
http://cloudstack.apt-get.eu/ubuntu/dists/trusty/4.4/

Did I miss something? Or is it just not released yet?

cheers,

- Stephan

RE: Status: update from 4.4.0 -> 4.4.1 still broken ?

2014-10-30 Thread Vadim Kimlaychuk
I have tried to do upgrade 2nd time and failed again. The sequence of actions
is described here:
http://cloudstack-release-notes.readthedocs.org/en/latest/upgrade/upgrade-4.4.html

Followed instructions until the end. VM upgrade has taken more than 5 hrs. The
result of update is:
-
Stopping and starting 1 secondary storage vm(s)...
ERROR: Failed to stop secondary storage vm with id 25

Done stopping and starting secondary storage vm(s)

Stopping and starting 1 console proxy vm(s)...
ERROR: Failed to stop console proxy vm with id 1

Done stopping and starting console proxy vm(s) .

Stopping and starting 1 running routing vm(s)...
2
Done restarting router(s).

After restarting managment server workers are not querying status and resources
anymore. The last lines at management server log are:

Log is not growing and changing. Cloudstack console is missing with 404 error.
I thing VM update should not influence this. Any System VM in fact can be just
re-created by "killing" from management GUI.

Vadim.

If it makes it any easier - it failed for me, but with no error simply got
"transaction revoked..." error, no description, nothing...
