Re: CoreOS/Docker - a new blog series

2015-04-20 Thread Phillip Kent
Hi cs user,

I have not so far had any issues with using discovery and passing the
discovery URL via userdata.

If you are using a 'Private with Gateway Services' network this simple
'cloud-config' file should work:
https://github.com/Interoute/CoreOS-and-VDC/blob/master/cloud-config-template-simple

And the new VM will pull its config from the virtual router. My CS setup
uses Advanced Networking, so I don't know how this goes with the Basic
networking/Security groups.

One piece of good advice seems to be that if you are setting up a CoreOS
cluster using fleet, if any of the VMs fail to deploy completely, the best
thing is to get a fresh discovery token and re-deploy all of the VMs. It
does not seem to be easy to clear a 'failed' record from the discovery
database.

BTW, I will be publishing soon a couple more blogs on CoreOS clusters and
fleet. Keep an eye on:
http://cloudstore.interoute.com/main/knowledge-centre/blog

 Hi All,

Thanks for the blog post Phillip, very impressive! :)

I've had a play with coreos/cloudstack myself, but it's been pretty manual
and the SSH public key has been baked into the template.

I guess I'm missing something very simple here, but how is everyone
managing to set the following via the dhcp router metadata?

 ssh_authorized_keys:
   - ssh-rsa B3NzaC1yc2EDAQABAAABAQC0g+ZTxC7weoIJLUafOgrm+h.

Are you creating a script on the coreos template which curls against the
router the first time it boots?

 Cheers!

Re: Custom disk size at cloudstack UI

2015-04-20 Thread Clément Schneider

Vadim,

The root disk custom size feature is currently limited to KVM but the
secondary disks sizes can be customized when adding a new disk to a VM -
I don't know if it is avaible on all hypervisor but I'm sure it is with
xenserver.

Here are the steps to do so:
Go to Service Offerings, add a new disk offering and check the Custom
Disk Size checkbox during the process.
Then go to Storage - Add Volume and select your newly created Disk
Offering. Now, you should be prompted for a custom disk size.

I'm not sure but depending on your setup you might have some restriction
in size. We are currently limited to something around 1TB.

What is the output of cat /etc/sysctl.conf? Update it as per

If there was an upgrade from XS 6.2 to XS 6.5, then changes to sysctl.conf is

Custom disk size at cloudstack UI

2015-04-20 Thread Vadim Kimlaychuk
Hello all,

I remember there is an option at CS UI that opens hidden element to
show input field for custom disk size at VM addition wizard. Can someone point
me to the file location I need to change in order to use custom disk size
functionality?

Thank you,

yeah, public_ipv4 should work. Sometimes I have seen failure, but these
were due to etcd bootstrapping. I don't know how you do it, but if you use
token from the cores discovery service, you will need to regenerate a new
one when you start a new cluster...and make sure that this token is
properly set in your cloud-config files

I have a hunch it's not defined and thus coreOS does not work with

  local-hostname
  public-ipv4
  public-hostname
  instance-id
  vm-id
  public-keys
  cloud-identifier

Now I am just not sure how coreOS does the substitution:

  4f5da676777bef53e8e/datasource/metadata

Re: CloudStack agent for HyperV

2015-04-20 Thread mvs babu
I have followed below steps to build CloudStack agent for Hyper-V in windows
machine.

Follow instructions of step 1 at
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Setting+up+a+CloudStack+dev+environment+on+Windows

Don’t forget to select git, wget, vim, mv etc.. (mention in above link)

Download Mono from http://www.mono-project.com/download/#download-win and
install it on windows machine.

Execute below command in Cygwin with administrator privileges.

mozroots --import --ask-remove

Execute below command on Cygwin to clone CloudStack using git,
git clone https://git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf/cloudstack.git

Set environment variable for mono in Windows,
Goto MyComputer Properties -- Advanced system settings -- Environment
Variables -- Select Path from System Variables tab -- Append the value
;C:\Program Files (x86)\Mono\bin to Variable value and click ok.

Goto the path “cloudstack/plugins/hypervisors/hyperv/” and modify the shell
script “buildagent.sh” as follows

#!/bin/bash

export EnableNuGetPackageRestore=true

wget http://nuget.org/nuget.exe

mv nuget.exe ./DotNet/ServerResource/.nuget/NuGet.exe

chmod a+x ./DotNet/ServerResource/.nuget/NuGet.exe

if [ $1 == true ] ; then

echo skipping tests

/cyg/c/Program Files (x86)/Mono/bin/xbuild /p:BuildWithMono=true
./DotNet/ServerResource/ServerResource.sln

else

echo running tests

/cyg/c/Program Files (x86)/Mono/bin/xbuild /p:BuildWithMono=true
./DotNet/ServerResource/ServerResource.sln

fi

In Cygwin you can execute buildagent.sh script to build the agent.

After building you will get the output in
/plugins/hypervisors/hyperv/DotNet/ServerResource/AgentShell/bin/Debug

That output folder can be zipped and can be distributed. In that output folder
there is one executable generated AgentShell.exe.

To install service, “AgentShell.exe --install -u username -p password”

 Very strange indeed.

yeah, public_ipv4 should work. Sometimes I have seen failure, but these
were due to etcd bootstrapping. I don't know how you do it, but if you use
token from the cores discovery service, you will need to regenerate a new
one when you start a new cluster...and make sure that this token is
properly set in your cloud-config files

However, I would like to use the private ip range for that. The

I haven't looked deep into it, my guess is there might be a problem
  with the cloudstack metadata.
Can you check if private_ipv4 exists and is what you expect it to
  be:

curl your virtual router to get the metadata:

  http://docs.cloudstack.apache.org/projects/cloudstack-administration
  /en/4.4/api.html?highlight=metadata#user-data-and-meta-data

I have a hunch it's not defined and thus coreOS does not work with
it. I could be wrong but could be a cloudstack bug.

Did a bit of digging and things should work.

The metadata url for cloudstack instances is fetched via :

  https://github.com/coreos/coreos-overlay/blob/master/coreos-base/oem-
  cloudstack/files/cloudstack-dhcp

  cloudstack serves:

  service-offering
  availability-zone
  local-ipv4
  local-hostname
  public-ipv4
  public-hostname
  instance-id
  vm-id
  public-keys
  cloud-identifier

Now I am just not sure how coreOS does the substitution:

  https://github.com/coreos/coreos-cloudinit/tree/4eaaa5c9273a0ce557d42
  4f5da676777bef53e8e/datasource/metadata

Since there is no cloudstack metadata source defined yet.

I will ask around and keep digging

  Thanks

Re: [DISCUSS] XCP usage with CloudStack

2015-04-20 Thread Rafael Weingartner
Hi Tim,

I did not even notice that you were an evangelist from Citrix. I believe
that must be cool ;).

I hope that I have not said anything stupid.

Sometimes I feel like I am the only one using XCP with CS, so far it has
been pretty stable and we have not had many problems. Beside the normal
bugs and problems that almost everybody has already ran into.

Well, if the CS uses some python and scripts/utilities that might come with
Xenserver, I believe that they come with XCP too. In our environment
everything runs just fine. I just found one weird bug, I think that code is
not needed and I intend to remove it soon. The code I am referring is this
method,
com.cloud.hypervisor.xen.resource.XcpOssResource.createPatchVbd(Connection,
String, VM),

There are already one or two threads I have created a while ago, but I did
not get much attention. In my humble option, there is no reason why the
systems VMs should use the local storage in XCP environments, besides that
the code I referred does not even look at the system.vm.use.local.storage
parameter.

Looking at class com.cloud.hypervisor.xen.resource.XcpOssResource, it seems
that it is basically using the structure and commands from
com.cloud.hypervisor.xen.resource.CitrixResourceBase. Therefore, I believe
that it is not using much specific commands and scripts to Xenserver.

Out of curiosity, why not use the “xe” command from XAPI directly?

On Fri, Apr 17, 2015 at 7:12 PM, Tim Mackey tmac...@gmail.com wrote:

 Thanks Rafael.

I'll check to see what the maintenance status is for xcp-xapi with Debian
when I get back to the office on Monday. I do recall there being issues
 raised last summer.

One of the reasons the question I've asked is so important has to do with
CloudStack assumptions in a XenServer environment. For example, it doesn't
directly issue xe commands, but uses both the Java and Python xapi
bindings, and has a number of supporting scripts which assume package
versions which match those of specific XenServer releases.

btw, by way of disclosure, I'm the XenServer community manager and have
acquired a pretty decent level of expertise with things Xen, XCP, XAPI and
XenServer since joining the team in 2008. Here's a google search for me:

 https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instantion=1espv=2ie=UTF-8#q=tim%20mackey%20xenserver

Oh, and I'm grinning as I write this since I suspect some colleagues will
kid me over you educating me. No harm, and no offense. I guess I'm not as
well known as I thought ;)

  rafaelweingart...@gmail.com wrote:

   Dear Tim Mackey,

I have a production environment using XCP (XAPI). As far as I know, the
difference between the use of XAPI and Xenserver is that Xenserver is
 an
  OS
bundled altogether with a version of Xen hypervisor, XAPI and some
management tools. While, XAPI is just the API used to consolidate
  workloads
and interact with the Xen hypervisor hosts.

At the end, Xenserver environments are using the Xen hypervisor and
 XAPI
toolstack. The difference is that it comes pre-built with an OS
  (CentOS?).

When Cloudstack sends some command to start or stop a VM, it will send
something like “xe vm-start uuid=uidVM” or “xe vm-shutdown
  uuid=uidVM”,
these are XAPI commands. Therefore, even if you are using Xenserver
environments, those are the commands that are going to be used; hence,
Xenserver encapsulates the XAPI and Xen hypervisor.

To my knowledge, now that Xenserver was open by Citrix, there should
 not
be any difference on capabilities between the XAPI that we get from
 here:
   http://www.xenproject.org/developers/teams/xapi.html

And the one that we get when we install the Xenserver directly.

   Now answering your questions:

   1. What OS/version are you using for dom0 and with what hypervisor
  version?

We are using Debian 7.4.0, we first tried Ubuntu server, but it was not
stable enough for a production environments. The Ubuntu had some bugs
 and
missing dependencies that had to be worked around.

   2. How did you deploy XCP (from pre-compiled ISO, built from source,
   package source i.e yum/apt-get, xenserver-core packages, something
 else)

We installed the XCP (XAPI) using the apt repository.
We first installed the xen hypervisor:

   # apt-get install xen-hypervisor-amd64

   then the XAPI packages:

   # apt-get install xcp-xapi

Of course, is not as simple as just running those commands, we also had
  to
configure the networking and tuned the xen hypervisor, XAPI, storage
 and
   etc.

   3. How are you handling updates to the XCP/Xen/XAPI components,
particularly those of a security nature?

I am running 4.5.0. I probably don't use my lab setup that often to encounter
these inconsistencies. I will look for any XS hotfixes that have fixes around
this area and let you know if I find one.

We are currently testing a 4.5.1 CloudStack deployment with XenServer 6.5 and
the Security Groups are very temperamental.

Sometimes they allow traffic, sometimes they block it. Lots of errors in the
cloud.log file on the XenServer saying failed to update iptables etc

RE: XenServer 6.5 - Security Groups

2015-04-20 Thread Geoff Higginbottom
FYI we have just re-deployed the environment using ACS 4.4.3 and XenServer 6.2
and now it is all working as expected.

We now need to work out if the problem is with ACS 4.5.1 or XenServer 6.5
