pkg_add -r xfree86 ... Help ...
Hello, I have been trying to get an X windows system up and running using pkg_add on Dragonfly 1.4. I looked at this guide:- http://leaf.dragonflybsd.org/~justin/handbook/x-install.html Which seemed straightforward enough. I set my PKG_PATH variable to: ftp://packages.stura.uni-rostock.de/pkgsrc-stable/DragonFly/RELEASE/i386/All And tried pkg_add -r XFree86 as it said in the guide. However it says -r is an illegal option and even when I remove it I am told that XFree86 cannot be found. Can anyone tell me if I seem to be doing anything wrong? Should I be trying a different ftp source? I tried manually browsing several but it is a bit of a maze. Any pointers would be most welcome. Thank you. Max.
bootblocks......
Lots to comment on here... Just for the record I really liked the installer. Just because I am a newbie does not mean that I expected or even wanted a fancy gui display. The guide I found was VERY clear about how to go about things and what (as a newcomer) I found very refreshing is that every step mentioned occurred EXACTLY as it said it would (this is something I find quite rare when searching guides on the net). The installers simplicity was just fine, but the need for good documentation can never be understated unless you are one of those types who simply understands everything and fails to see how others cannot... Thanks for everyones help and comments though :) Max.
BootBlocks.
Hello, Does anyone know of any documentation, or howto's on configuring bootblocks. I have two hard drives in my tower and have DragonFly on one. I want to install debian on the second. I am familiar with GRUB but cannot find anything when I google Bootblocks. Any pointers would be gratefully received. Regarding the issues of production servers. I would like to point out that as a relative *nix newbie I chose Dragonfly because it was new. OpenBSD and NetBSD seemed daunting and FreeBSD seemed wrapped up in all manner of debate. I would probably have found FreeBSD simpler but hey, here I am and I liked the freshness surrounding Dragonfly. I think the statements regarding the need for documentation are very accurate. Trying to glean information from posts, and websites can only get you so far (quite far with a lot of patience). This installation guide was very nice I thought:- http://www.scottro.net/dfly/dfinstall.html And the new Wiki is useful but it is clearly written from a highly experienced users point of view. Thankyou to all.
Sound question.
Sorry for a somewhat open question here. I have just installed Dragonfly on my machine and am considering which directions to take with sound. Can anyone tell me which sound server they would recommend (I saw JACK in the pkgsrc list) and have heard good things about it. However im somewhat daunted about getting ALSA to work... Any hints would be really cool. Thanks, Max.
