Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Open pps as ppt

2011-02-12 Thread Luiz Oliveira
Hello,

I just did a test here (Debian squeeze-LibO 3.3.1). I downloaded a file.
pps from Internet and asked to open instead of downloading. The
LibreOffice opened the file correctly starting the display
automatically. But when you click on the esc key Libo closed everything.
Then rename the file to .ppt and everything worked right.

I think you are mixing apples & oranges. OOo does not open pps files
automatically. To do that you need an extension such as:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/taxonomy/term/111
Auto Starter for Presentation documents
to do this. Go-oo has done autostarted pps files for quite some time. LO
is based on go-oo builds, so it's quite standard for LO to open pps
files in presentation mode automatically (it was a bug fix if I recall
correctly).

If you don't wish to rename the file to ppt, then use standard OOo -
your choice. Or file a wishlist bug report asking for a modification.

As I said, PowerPoint (MS Office for Macs 2011) exits the presentation when it is over.
PowerPoint (MS Office for Macs 2008) behaved the same.

.pps was intended for automatic play and then close of a prsentation.
.ppt was intended for creating and editing presentations.

It is simple to change a .pps extension to .ppt in order to edit it.

No...

The bug that needs confirming is:

1. Is there a missing entry for 'Libreoffice 3.3' in the 'Open with...'
dialog, and

2. Does opening the .pps with soffice.exe result in opening it the same
as if opening it with LibreOffice Impress - ie, playing it then closing
instead of simply opening it in Edit mode, which is what happens on mine
with XP Pro...

Well, as you say, "If that emulation is desirable is another question.".
LibreOffice is not MS Office. So it doesn't have to follow MS Office's
rules. It can have its own.
As software developer, I have found that switches are better than removing a
feature.
IMHO, it should have an option to state this behavior. This makes
LibreOffice smarter. ;)
...and safer too. There are malicious scripts sometimes that play
automatically. Please, let that option, make it as MS Office by default, and
I will be happy to set it when needed to edit directly.

First, as I already mentioned, I do not refer to the renamed to ppt file. I
take a pps and it doesn't stop to edit it either way. The files are
associated to the LibreOffice by the installer. If they weren't (when
checked at the installer's step) - then it is a bug.
It worked as I need before the stable version.

Concerning the scripts, the only difference is here:
OpenOffice.org.Pps="C:\Program Files (x86)\LibreOffice
3\program\\simpress.exe"

PowerPoint (MS Office for Macs 2011) – Automatically plays .pps and closes

The LibreOffice developers have successfully emulated the behaviour of

If that emulation is desirable is another question.

Thanks, but there are only two LibreOffice Impress that do the same thing as
I open the file directly. I browse to the soffice.exe too. Still no
difference.

[libreoffice-users] Selecting merged cells in Calc -- BUG?

2011-02-12 Thread T. R. Valentine
Win XP
LibreOffice 3.3.0
OOO330m19 (Build:6)
tag libreoffice-3.3.0.4

Calc:
1) Merge two or more cells horizontally
2) Select the merged cells
3) Holding the Shift key, use the Right Arrow key to attempt to select
additional cells

OR

1) Merge two or more cells vertically
2) Select the merged cells
3) Holding the Shift key, use the Down Arrow key to attempt to select
additional cells

Either way, Calc will not expand the selection from the merged cell.

Workaround:
Select the cells in the opposite direction, even if dealing with
several merged cells and beginning in a merged cell.

Is this a known bug? If not, could someone either enter it in the
appropriate place or direct me to the appropriate place for me to make
an entry?

TIA.

The solution is to copy the preferred AutoCorrect file -- I used
..LibreOffice 3\Basis\share\autocorr\acor_en-GB.dat -- to (Win XP):

... Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Application
Data\LibreOffice\3\user\autocorr\acor_en-CA.dat

It does not seem to matter if the acor_en-CA.dat (which was a copy,
anyway) remains in the
..LibreOffice 3\Basis\share\autocorr\ directory.

Ok, when you rightclick on a file, and choose 'open with' you should
see a window that contains also a 'browse' button
click this thing, and go to "C:\Program Files (x86)\LibreOffice
3\program" (which is the default location for LibO, or) to the location
where you installed LibreOffice.

Choose the program that's the correct one ('simpress.exe') or
('soffice.exe')

The checkbox in the first screen is also something to watch for if
you're not sure if the selected program will work, than UNcheck this thing..

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc

2011-02-12 Thread plino

I have four comments on relative paths in OOo/LO:

1) It doesn't work. I changed to relative paths, created a new file with a
relative path, moved both files (source and reference) to another drive and
it kept looking for the file in the original location

2) It doesn't make any sense to save a path as relative and show it as
absolute

3) It doesn't make sense that the option is called "Save URLs relative to
file system". I consider myself an advanced user and I would never consider
that this option refers to the location of files my PC. URLs are usually
associated (maybe incorrectly) with resources on the web. In any case it's
not an obvious name.

4) It doesn't make any sense that the OOo/LO default is the opposite of what
users are expecting. If OO / TDF want to create an alternative to the
established Office they should follow the same functionality, improving but
not disrupting.

This is not correct. OOo/LO show an absolute path. But you can choose it
to be absolute or relative:

system ..

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc

2011-02-12 Thread plino

OpenOffice and LibreOffice use absolute paths

='file:///C:/Source.ods'#$Sheet1.B2

while Excel uses relative paths

=[Source.xls]Sheet1!$B$2

This means that in Excel as long as the files are on the same folder or in
the same relative folder, the references will work

This is obviously a OOo/LO limitation. It is unreasonable to expect people
to maintain files in a fixed path so that they work... This also means that
if you send a file to a collaborator s/he will have to place it in the same
exact path which is unlikely...

But your problem must be different since you mention that when you open with
OOo this doesn't occur.

Can you upload somewhere a couple of sample files where this occurs and
paste the link in a post?

Wanna know something weird? I open LibreOffice, I chose 'Open' command, it
opens the file, plays it, and closes! I can't find a way to edit it. I don't
think is desirable to rename it just to edit. And it didn't do so until it
was the stable build. As beta behaved as I need.

find that when trying to reference from one spreadsheet to another
sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, coming up with a #REF
failure. It also fails to show the graphs from an Excel sheet that
worked perfectly in Open Office 3.2.

I uninstalled 3.2 before installing 3.3, but have had to go back to
Oo3.2 to get my spreadsheets working again.

I doubt that the #REF! error has anything to do with the software
version. As far as I can see, this error works properly in
LibreOffice. #REF! has to do with relative references and how these
references resolve when you copy relative references. When they refer
to some sheet/row/column out of scope you get either one of

=#REF!.A1 (no such sheet)
Sheet1.#REF!1 (no such row)
Sheet1.A#REF! (no such column)

Without any information at all it is impossible to help without
posting a spreadsheet tutorial.
