[libreoffice-users] Re: Font names

2011-03-21 Thread Zak McKracken

Zak
What I know about fonts and the way it SHOULD be displayed in a menu is
this:
Every font file name should be listed in the "window" showing the font
name. If you have Frutiger 45 Light and Frutiger 55 Roman as font names
in your font folder [Windows or Linux], then each font should be
displayed separately, not grouped together under one name Frutiger. I
know that could sounds wrong. If you have Arial "plain", Italic, Bold,
Bold Italic, etc., you get one listing for Arial and you can make use of
all those styles. But you are using Frutiger 45 and 55 which are two
different fonts. I have Caslon 224 and Caslon 540. These are two
different fonts. The "45" and "55" are telling you that they are
different fonts, and they should be listed separately.

The thing is that lots of fonts come with separate files for the reagular
and bold, and italic, and bold italic variety.
So if someone saw fit to add another weight, (and this is not a different
font, just a different weight, because there's also "Frutiger 46 light
italic" and so on in mix. So usually every software will group the bold,
italic and bold/italic variety together, but not others.

Alright, if this is the standard (and Im not learned in these things) I'm
gonna go along (haha, as if I had a choice).

But I'd feel it'd be easier not only for me but in general if a font with
multiple weights would not be displayed as seperate fonts but as one.
Would unclutter the font list, too. Would of course also be difficult it
work reliably (if there are just the four standard weights, use those, if
there are more use those, too, if there are fewer, gernerate the standard
set yourself, but what to do if there's a non-standard weight of some font
and the font is switched?), and if it's against the standard, that'd be a
problem for sure. I can see that.

I hope I did not confuse you completely.

No, don't worry :)
Dealing with some designer's ideas of creating 25 version of the same
font that look 95% the same, gives me headaches. I deal with a font
project sorting out over 100,000 fonts where too many of the serif fonts
looked like all the other serif fonts and if you overlap them, you get
almost the same positions of the lines.

You have my sympathy. I'm writing technical stuff, but I still want it to
look decent, and keep wondering why these complications have to get in the
way and subtract from the time I have to deal with other complications
completely unrelated to typesetting.

However, at least from my view it was easier the way OOo 3.2 handled it.
Although even worse than either way is to change it every other version,
so I guess I'll have to live with it now. Or should there be an option in
the settings somewhere?

[libreoffice-users] File saving integrity

2011-03-21 Thread Steve Edmonds

Hi.
I was following the discussion on sharepoint.
I am developing some guidelines for our users for use of LO to minimise
loss of data.

How does LO handle and store files across networks, what happens if the
network goes out partway during a save.

When the file is opened is the whole file cached locally for editing
Is the file saved as file.odt.part and mv file.odt at the end or is the
file held open and written by block.
What happens with a time save backup, is that local or remote (although
no good for .docs as it doesn't work)

I am presently apprehensive about editing a file across the internet
that may sit open, especially a largish file and tend to recommend.

Opening files on the local server for editing and saving is ok.
Files to be edited from a server remote across the internet should be
copied to your local HD, edited and copied back across the internet.

Does the sharepoint extension being discussed address these issues and
would it be applicable to any Webdav server. (I have no intention to
connect to a sharepoint server but could be interested in a webdav situation

Cheers,
steve

[libreoffice-users] Zeros when linking cells between sheets

2011-03-21 Thread John Kennedy
I have a spreadsheet with 3 sheets. I want sheets 1 (Phone) and 2 (Network),
when edited, to update sheet 3 (All) which is the master view.
I have linked each of the needed cells (e.g. cell a3 on the All reads
"=Phone.a3").
If "Phone.a3" is empty then "All.a3" has a 0 (zero). I would prefer, for
readability, for the cell to be blank like the referenced cell.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks,
John

Re: [libreoffice-users] How to select a rectangle area and export only content (and not whole page) as *.png in Draw?

2011-03-21 Thread Helmar
If the objects you want to export can be selected with the selection tool
(entirely) so it´s easy.
Select the objetcs and go to Export... then mark the box "Selection" just
below the "automatic extension" box

But if the area you want to export it comprehends part of one or more object
and you can´t simply select the entire objects I think that may be an option
creating a rectangle over that area and use the "intersection" to create a
selection from it so you can select it the usual way as a single object.

I was not aware of either icon. I have always inserted/deleted by right
clicking on the headers, row or column, and select delete/insert
row/column. Seems faster to me.

When look at

I can see an icon for "Delete Columns" as well as an icon for

I think there's an OOo plug-in for this that should work with LibO.
Look at the OOo extensions site.

Maybe "wc.py":
[Solved+Issue] No visible word count in OpenOffice Writer

That works fine for me with LibO 3.3.1 / 3.3.2 RC.

[libreoffice-users] Convert formulae to actual

2011-03-21 Thread James Wilde
I have a calc sheet with full names in one column, thus:

John Smith
Jane Smollett

I want to create a column with forenames and one with surnames. I've created
an extra column with the position of the space between first name and last name
(in the cases above, it's five in each case), and two other columns in one of
which I place the first x-1 characters where x is the position of the space)
and in the other I place the right end of the name field from the x+1 character
to the end.

What I'd now like todo is to change the contents of the first name column from
left(1;x-1) to John or Jane, and the last name column likewise, from being a
formula which displays as a name to being a name.

Can't find it anywhere.

TIA

[libreoffice-users] LO Calc very slow and freezes

Hi
I have a simple sheet with lots of lines (>30), a graph on 2 columns

LO struggles to open it, freezes all the time, so it's impossible to

My laptop runs correctly (Intel centrino duo with Xubuntu 10.04), memory

Is there some special memory settings to make *calc* work flawlessly, or
is it a performance problem?

It is a performance problem. If you are using an xlsx file you can decrease
