[libreoffice-users] Can't get spell check to work.
I am using libreoffice 3.3.1 linux binaries. I have spell checking working one machine, but not on two others (one of which has never had openoffice on it). If I try to spell check something on those machines, I get an immediate "The spell check is complete" with no errors (even if I typed complete gibberish). The language selector in the spell check dialog box is blank, and the dialog box disappears immediately so I can't change anything. If I start typing gibberish, the first letter does get changed to a capital, so I know that at least some part of the language tools is working. Any idea about what is causing this? [libreoffice-users] IF statement linking external sheet error
I'm having trouble migrating certain files to LibreOffice from OpenOffice containing IF statements to external sheets. The following IF statement works fine in OpenOffice, but but results in Err:504 (Error in paramter list): =IF(('file:///home/figueroa/Documents/da/enws/enws2011/enwssumm_hs.ods'#$Sheet1.$E$17)=1,1,0) However, the following reference to that file works fine: ='file:///home/figueroa/Documents/da/enws/enws2011/enwssumm_hs.ods'#$Sheet1.E1 This error only occurs in combination with the =IF statement. I'm running under Gentoo. This has been tested and verified after installing the program from binary and source. I don't know if this is a real bug, or if I need to set something to make this work right. Kind of hard to say not knowing how much is text and how much is mages, but for the less comples images, .png is far and away the best way to downsize image sizes by setting the number of colors appropriately and finessing the other settings like transparency OFF, etc.. [libreoffice-users] Png vs Jpg
Hi :) Yes, true. Png is 'lossless compression' whereas Jpg is lossy but Png is still compressed and Gimp can set the compression rate. Jpg often introduces strange artifacts (like ripples or the wake from a boat) which can inflate file-size! You see this a lot on badly done logos or images that have been manipulated while being jpgs (eg heavily cropped and re-sized), I have seen Pngs suffer a little at extreme rates of compression but Jpg compression is far worse even at low levels of compression. There are some clever ways of reducing Png sizes so that they can compete favourably with Gifs for things like logos and simple stylised images. I've seen very light Pngs that have very low colour range. say only 2 or 3 colours and no shading or blending. The corresponding jpgs have been very much heavier and looked messy whereas the png stayed clean. Hi Dotan, I don't know of a page directly listing all mirrors, but try this: http://download.documentfoundation.org/ Work your way down the directory structure until you find the file(s) you require, but instead of clicking on the file name click the "Details" link. This will bring up a list of available mirrors. Maybe the Italian mirror: http://libreoffice.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/tdf/libreoffice/ will work OK for you. Hi Anders, Stedtlund wrote (30-04-11 11:33) I have just dicovered that I can't print in landscape from writer/calc. The letters seems to have been stretched and printed over each other. Same happens if the document has been converted to pdf and then printed. Since OOo 3.3.0, there is a change in how special page sizes are handled. Probably this is the cause of your problem. See the OOo bug http://openoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=113562 I can print the same document from kword/kspread correctly. I can export to pdf from kword/kspread and print correctly. I can also print the same document correctly from LO 3.3.2 in Windows Vista to the same printer. (I have dual boot) Reading comment #10 and 12 in the report, you can understand that the changed behaviour is related to de defined page sizes for the printer. That must be the reason why printing on Ubuntu behaves different from that on Windows. Re: [libreoffice-users] exported PDF file size
Hi :) Gif is the ancient format (relatively) and is relatively unsophisticated. Png is designed to have all the functionality so that it can take over. I think Png is an Open format whereas Gif is proprietary although that might be a simplification. Gif might be better for website's logos and easier at the moment but sophisticated use of png is the way forwards. Apparently it's an Open Format whereas Gif is proprietary. I just don't know how to do the colour indexing stuff. I guess it's worth having a quick go at Gif in case it does give a better result faster. Good luck and regards from Tom :) PS. Png is also set to take over from Jpg as it also handles larger images better and again Jpg is a proprietary format (i think). [libreoffice-users] Re: Date format in template
Hi James The following solution might be of interest if you want to permanently change all LibreOffice's behaviour to use the ISO date format. So I did the following (LibreOffice 3.3.2, on Windows XP): ** In a hex-editor (HxD for example), I opened "C:\Program Files\LibreOffice 3\program\localedata_en.dll". (DLL version 3.03.202) ** PS: Make a backup of this file before you try this! ** At offset "BB44" I found the following unicode string: "MM/DD/YY" - you might find this string at some other offset... ** I changed it (unicode!) to "/MM/DD" - which I wanted. ** (PS: make sure you stay consistent with the "00" filler bytes that unicode strings require for this to work) This worked for me :D - even files that were created before this modification now showed their dates in the "/mm/dd" format. 8-) Final thought: It would be nice if the developers added an option "Don't use locales" or a "NoLanguage" language option - this would make this sort of workaround unnecessary. -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to users+h...@libreoffice.org Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/www/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
Re: [libreoffice-users] Installing on win7 and importing documents from old xp hard drive
Hi :) Answers are usually at the bottom of threads. I top-post because it's probably more familiar to you. Doc files display slightly differently in each version of MS Office and on each machine too. You will find similar changes when you open old .doc or .xls in LibreOffice. Pictures may have been moved around a little, that sort of thing. Usually it's not radical and is fairly easy to tidy up and re-save. Re: [libreoffice-users] Un-Impressed
Hi :) Obviously to do a presentation in front of people it might often be possible to 1. install Ubuntu or something to an 8Gb Usb-stick as a proper install not as a LiveUsb. Then various programs and files would be your familiar desktop where-ever you are. I do this. or 2. install LibreOffice to a usb-stick using the Portable Apps install and then be able to access those apps on any Windows machine (in theory). However there are always possible problems. Some machines have their boot-order locked so that option 1 doesn't work. Sometimes hardware doesn't work straight away so it might take quite some effort to find the drivers for a particular projector if a venue doesn't like you using your own (assuming it is possible to take your own) and that can make option 1 and 2 difficult. All this assumes that you are doing the presentation. However, you might need to work with other people to develop parts of the presentation or you might need to send people the complete presentation for them to run in a format they can use. Timi has sometimes said xls where he clearly means ppt which has caused some confusion where people have been more keen on finding a way of criticising someone rather than trying to help. My advice to Timi has to be to stick to PowerPoint because clearly Impress is not ready and the LibreOffice Community is also not ready to help people with it. Writer is good and Calc is ok but Base is tricky and Impress is unusable. Regards from Tom :) From: "t...@iafrica.com" To: users@libreoffice.org Sent: Sat, 30 April, 2011 9:13:27 Subject: [libreoffice-users] Un-Impressed Bruce, Thanks for advice about backing -up... I do! Go back and load backup copy links ok then sometimes on save/close and subsequent re- open all links gone. The risk is immediate and instant... all you need to do is save your current file. The absolute risk is standing up in front of a few important customers .. start presentation no sound... links vanish. I am not able to indentify as to what triggers this wipe out if I open each "interaction play sound" links then the path is displayed and is correct. The link however is dead. As I've said before to refresh the link you can't copy and paste as it does not restore the link. The only way to refresh the link is to re-browse the path and click OK then the link is restored. Surely there's someone in LibO team who could recognise these symptoms? I mean what activity can access the links to reset them or somehow invalidate them? I even wondered if when I defrag my drives I could somehow upset the pathways I'm sure someone will say it's XP's problem (which may well be true). I asked a linux wizz to run the presentation on Ubuntu and so far the links are stable. Minor problem my customers are all MS. Same problem also occurs under Win7 environment. The second problem is if you attempt to convert from impress odp to xls and them open in MS all the text and pictures are ok but the audio links non-existant. I can only think the "interaction - play sound" function in Impress is different to MS and hence the loss. BTW if we all adopted the attitude of never trying new systems and just be content with MS then as a race we deserve to die out.
