Hi Colin-2,
I also use LO Portable, however I usually run it off my local hard drive
(long story, don't ask). I usually find that it takes a while to start up,
but not as long as 2 minutes. I think 20 to 30 seconds is more likely (from
cold start).

I just tested if from my flash disk (using the portableApps launcher), took
about 30 seconds, although I am using Windows 7. Do you have all the
Windows XP service packs installed (I believe the latest is SP3)? You can
check this by right-clicking on My Computer Properties.

The link for the LibreOfficePortable forum is:

I know there have been some discussions about start-up time of LO portable,
if not in the LO portable forum then elsewhere on the PortableApps site.
Unfortunately, I can't really remember the suggestions (except disabling
tooltips or something), so you'll probably have to check it out yourself.

Jack

[libreoffice-users] RE: using libre office with portable apps

2011-05-20 Thread plino
Probably the files in the pen are badly fragmented.

Since that is a pen (and not a hard disk) the easiest, fastest and most
efficient way to defrag is simply to MOVE all contents to a folder in
another disk (preferably a HDD) and then move them back.

Since files are moved sequentially they will be written in consecutive
clusters and therefore defragmented.

It would certainly be nice if the pre-release page said that the file

[libreoffice-users] Fluid References

2011-05-20 Thread dn4n
Hi One and All,

New user- on Mac OS X platform.

I'm writing a longish text doc and need to reference key statements. Usually
by adding superscripted number at end of sentence and then a numbered list
at end of doc.

Problem is that on draft versions, these text statements get chopped and
changed around- messing up the list of refs at the end of the doc.

Sure that others have encountered such issue- what's the solution? Initially
wondered if possible to hyperlink within the doc to specific sentences that
would survive rearranging. But couldn't link to target text.

Thankyou.

[libreoffice-users] Frame Positioning Issues; Overlap / Overhang

I maintain a large-ish problem in LibreOffice 3.3.1 [and previous
versions, and OpenOffice before that].
http://sourceforge.net/projects/coils/files/WMOGAG-Coils.pdf/download

I have consistent issues with frame positioning. I insert a frame,
typically anchored to the paragraph, and check the follow-text-flow
option. But frames can frequently overlap each other and also overlap
footnotes at the bottom of the page. Is there any trick to getting
better frame positioning?

Typically I use frames to insert examples, code snippets, etc... Is
there a better way to do this than frames? Generally I like how frames
look, that they are named resources, support captions, etc... But using
them is really frustrating due to the positioning ssue.

I have tried the Portable version on several USB sticks and I noticed
that it took different amounts of time for each one. I know that each
one have different speed rating for how long it takes to transfer
files to-and-from them. So that could be a reason for your time delay.
The more expensive your thumb drive, or flash drive, the faster it
usually can transfer files - if you buy the same storage size. I have
noticed that the 1 and 2 GB thumb drives are a little faster than the 4
GB version, even thought it was rated a little faster. So I might be
wrong, or it could also depend on the storage space the drive has, or
even the internal circuitry.

On my Vista laptop [Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T3200 @ 2.00GHz], it
takes about 1.5 to 2.5 minutes to load up and run. So it also can be
the computer you are using. The faster the USB port, the faster the
computer, the faster the load time and such.

Yes the less extensions and other add-ons, the faster LO-portable should
load.

I don't see you can. But here's a workaround:
o Open a new spreadsheet (Calc) document.
o Create as many sheets as you are likely to use in spreadsheets generally.
o Click the first sheet tab and then Shift+click the last sheet tab
to select all the sheets at once.
o Click in the top left square - where the row and column headers
meet - to select the whole of all the sheets.

o Set your required font.
o Go to File | Templates | Save... to save the document as a template.
o Go to File | Templates | Organize..., select the template, and
then click Commands | Set As Default Template.

Unfortunately, if you need to create any new sheets in a spreadsheet,
they will still start with the real default font.

I trust this helps.

1) Open Calc,
2) Press F11 to open styles
3) Right-click Default style, Modify...
4) Change Font in the Font tab
5) Save it as template
6) Make this template default

There is a relatively easy way to examine MS Office documents. One is to
install one of the supported viewers (which requires a platform on which the
viewers run). Better yet, put the Microsoft Office document up on a free
Windows Live SkyDrive account. Not all features are available under the

 documents is superb.

I just verified that with a couple of documents I had been conducting
DOC/OOXML - LOffice/ODF forensic work on. You can use SkyDrive in the

Windows Live ID. And I don’t know how many different browsers SkyDrive
 works smoothly with.

PS: One missing feature of SkyDrive is a way to download an uploaded DOC in
another format (namely, DOCX). Being able to see the OOXML equivalent is
often quite helpful in understanding how a Word feature is handled without
having to dissect the binary format.

PPS: I have not experimented with Google Docs for this. There the problem
is that one has to deal with whatever the feature loss is when going to the
internal Google Docs format, especially if trying to get from one external
format to another. It might work well enough, I just haven't needed to find
 out.
