It is not forced. A explained, you can set it to print or not the empty
pages that are automatically inserted blanc pages (tools > Options as
well as the print dialog, 2nd tab)

Hmm, maybe it should be turned off by default ..

Why do the developers assume something is always going to be printed or

Well, I guess we have to go back to 1995 or so, to find that out ;-) But
I guess it is designed with large production/documents in mind, that get
printed double sided (not to waste paper, even then).

Re: [libreoffice-users] New to Group, and so checking on Browser Plug-in

2011-08-29 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Maybe about 5mins for the full book. On mine it took 15 seconds to reach the
grey-out inside the tab and just under 30 seconds to display the Getting
Started
guide. More than 10secs feels like "forever" of course.

The wiki-page shows the approximate number of pages in each guide
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation
which might help you guess at roughly how long each might take.

Just out of curiosity which version of java are you using?
Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Java
The 2.6.0_21 is the best with the _20 and _22 being good 2nd best and the more
recent ones, such as _24 and _26, being completely hopeless. I don't think
java
is the issue here. I just don't know tbh.

Are other things taking ages to start-up, such as YouTube videos and stuff?
How
about other apps? Does it take ages to open-up LibreOffice normally? Is it
faster 2nd time, after you close and re-open? Have you cleared "private data"
such as temp folders, history and stuff in FireFox? Have you defragged you
system lately?

Also, a little while ago, someone was asking about which plug-in to use to make
it possible to view documents inside FireFox and i only knew how to do that in
Gnu&Linux, not Windows. In Firefox

Tools - Add-ons - Plug-ins
do you also have "OpenOffice.org Plug in"? I tried using that pop-up to do a
search in FireFox add-ons to try to find the proper name of the plug-in but
couldn't find it listed there. Presumably it's an option given during install?

Did you do a "Custom" install? I was thinking that maybe it's one of the extra
files in the download bundle? Luckily i think the person only wanted to know
for Gnu&Linux so we were able to help but it would be good to know for future
reference.

How long is it taking to reach the grey-out stage?
God luck, thanks and regards from
Tom :)

IIRC this "feature" was introduced somewhere around the end of OOo v2

[libreoffice-users] No hatched cell background? Why?

2011-08-29 Thread Onyeibo Oku
In M$-Excel, cell backgrounds can be hatched. The printout is solid and that
makes for nicer photocopied documents. LibO provides color backgrounds only. Is
this by intention or are there plans to include that feature?

For now - I gray-out cells that are usually hatched. Some photocoping machines
here don't pick tones very well. The result is a fake-looking document. This is
saddening.

Yes, I do agree

But when there is only one table, Calc will do the job, no ?

No need to use a hammer to slam a fly...

That's why I linked a data pilot tutorial. Apart from that, a single table
in a database is not a hammer and much easier to maintain in the long run
(and you can create data pilots from it)

If not, then perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you want to do. So if you

I can explain this bit, which LibreOffice will not see as a bug.
Writer considers that you may wish to print your document
double-sided. You have set your second page ("first page") to be
numbered "1", an odd number, and Writer decides that you will
therefore want this to be a recto (or right-hand page), not the verso
(or left-hand page) that it would otherwise be. To achieve this, it
notionally inserts a blank page between "cover page" and "first
page". Including this blank page, you do indeed now have four pages,
not three.

Is there any way to just have pages that are not right or left pages?

In editing mode, you do not see the blank page, and this may be confusing.
It is confusing because it's wrong behaviour, if it forces people to
print it, then it should be visible in editing mode.

But you can see it in Page Preview. You will want the page to print
(as it were) if you are printing double-sided but not if you are
printing single-sided. You can control this at Tools | Options... |
LibreOffice Writer | Print | Other | Print automatically inserted
blank pages. Alternatively you can reach the same dialogue on the fly
via the Options... button in the Print dialogue.

Oh, and I'm not advocating this arrangement, merely describing it.

Thanks.
Why do the developers assume something is always going to be printed or
put on the web?

Maybe there should be a View->PDF Layout.

looked at your file.

Try the following.

Format > Page > Footer
check the "Footer On" box

Then go to the first page footer with the footer page count.

Insert > Field
There you have Page-Number and Page-Count options.

That should help you.

It's not that I can't make a footer.
I have the text
"page " Field->Page-Number " of " Field->Page-Count
and it displays:

I want it to display "'page 2 of 2".

There are 3 physical pages but I set the starting page# to 1 on the

There is no way it should even have Page-Count=4.

looked at your file.

Try the following.

Format > Page > Footer
check the "Footer On" box

Then go to the first page footer with the footer page count.

Insert > Field
There you have Page-Number and Page-Count options.

That should help you.

[libreoffice-users] How to disable the mail-merge-wizard in LibreOffice?

2011-08-29 Thread Claus Berghammer (Bugzilla)

Hello LibreOffice Users,

I'm using a template with database-fields in it on a regularly basis, but don't
want to print a mass-mailing. Currently I have to click NO every time again,
when I am printing this document. In OOo it was possible to disable that
Dialogue by adding some lines to Writer.xcu, but this file doesn't exist any
more in current LibO Versions.

So, does anybody know how to disable that Dialogue in LibO?

Sincerely, Claus Berghammer

For the data, I have used CSV or SYLK in the past.
For the structure, export to *.BAS or *.MER (if those options are still
available) and then correct to fit the constraints accepted by Base.

Bear in mind that multi-valued fields, a favorite with FMPro
users/developers, are not directly transferable as these are not
supported by the HSQLDB backend engine.

Also, I seem to recall that the binary image fields of FMPro are not
importable either.

Date fields require validation/verification before importing into Base -
FMPro seemed to use non-standard date representation (but that would be
a general recommendation anyway, whatever the database).

Boolean fields can have 3 states in LO Base, True, False and Unset (i.e.
undetermined).

Multiple keys, if you have them, can sometimes be problematic.

Your field names should avoid extended latin characters, spaces and
punctuation such as question marks for best results. Such freedom of
choice is of course allowed in FMPro (or it was, unless Apple has
changed the way FMPro works).

Re: [libreoffice-users] Problem with data conversion

2011-08-29 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

Would you be willing to download/install 3.3.4 from
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/?
I do not use the repository version, and I use Ubuntu 64bit 10.04. You
would need to install in via the terminal, but
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/installation/linux/ will walk you
through this. No need to uninstall anything either.

I wonder if adding the language packs could help you? You will need to
go to 3.3.4, unless someone has archived the "nl - Nederlands" pack for
3.3.3. I do not understand Asian characters, so I do not know if there
is a Mandarin language pack listed.

You could also try this Dutch dictionary and see it it works.
http://libreoffice-na.us/English/add-on-dictionaries-large-list/Dutch_spelling_and_hyphenation_Dictionary--nl-dict-v2.00g2010-09-22.oxt

As for the characters showing in LibreOffice - I am taking a guess here
- could it be something to do with the default font you are using for
LO's Calc? Format > Character should place you to the dialog to set
your default font. I would make sure your font is set for the same one
you use in the other applications. As someone who has worked with
collecting fonts [over 100,000 of them over the years] I find that many
do not have some of the non-English characters that are common in other
languages. I would make sure you use a good Unicode font [like Arial
Unicode] and see if the problem goes away.

LibreOffice 3.3.3
OOO 330m 19 (Build:301)
LibreOffice 3.3.3.1 Ubuntu package 1.3.3.3ubuntu2

I have been testing Gnucash on linux, and in particular the ability to export
data to an html file and read that into other programs, specifically
LibreOffice Calc. The whole process went excellently with one small exception:
the translation of the Swedish characters, å, ä and ö (and of course the
capitals, Å, Ä and Ö which I have not tested).

Instead of seeing each of the three letters, in each case I saw two characters,
Ã¥, for example instead of å. I checked the three characters in a hex editor,
and found the following:

å was represented by C3A5 in other applications, but as C383C2A5 in LibO
ä was represented by C3A4 in other applications, but as C383C2A4 in LibO
ö was represented by C3B6 in other applications, but as C383C2B6 in LibO

I checked the original data in Gnucash, the intermediary form in the html file
and the contents of content.xml in LibO. The first two had the short form,
LibO had the second form.

I have also checked the same information in Windows, although I have not yet
used a hex editor in Windows. Both Excel and LibO Calc imported the data
correctly, or rather, displayed it correctly.

Before I report this as a bug, I'd like to be sure it's not something I'm
missing in my configuration. All programs are set to use UTF-8, insofar as one
can set it in the program rather than in the operating system.

A late thought occurs to me. I use LibO Writer for writing Mandarin and have
set 'Enabled for Asian languages' under Languages. Can this have affected the
way LibO translates the non-English characters? Although LibO has actually
_added_ two bytes to the characters.

//James

[libreoffice-users] Re: CURRENT_DATE or TODAY default date in Base

2011-08-29 Thread Andreas Säger
The Base GUI is too stupid to do that trick. It all depends on the database
you are actually using.
For the embedded HSQLDB type of database that is:

menu:Tools>SQL...
ALTER TABLE "My Table" ALTER COLUMN "My Date" DATE DEFAULT CURRENT_DATE NOT
NULL

You may leave out NOT NULL or you may unckeck Edit>Database>Advanced: "Form
checks for required fields". Otherwise you get a form errors about missing
data.

Hello Rogier,

Did you define the language of the document, either in its style
(Format>Styles (Control-T)) or in direct formatting
(Format>Character>Font>Language) ?
When the dictionary is properly installed, it should have a v-sign
next to it in the list of languages in Font-Language (as well as in
the preferences page you mention >language settings>languages>standard
language

The language is a characteristic of the Character (letter in Dutch)
and can be defined for a single word, a sentence, a paragraph or an
entire text.

Hope thie helps - or else try to explain more in detail what you do/whathappens.

Could be. Nobody can tell without any data nor formulas from the
original poster. Unlike Excel, the boolean data type is just a subtype
of the decimal type. The number format "BOOLEAN" displays any non-zero
number as TRUE and all the rest as FALSE. In Excel there is a separate
boolean data type, so TRUE and FALSE are never equal to any number.

2011-08-29 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
The Nabble 'forum' is one way of viewing threads from the mailing list
http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Users-f1639498.html
and there is a search feature at the top-right.

LibreOffice is just beta-testing it's own Extensions Web-page and there will be
an announcement about it soon to invite everyone to test it out. It doesn't
have all the extensions as they are just being added but it might be worth
looking through
http://extensions-test.libreoffice.org

The OpenOffice.org site is very temperamental. People are working hard to fix
it but until then just keep clicking on "Try again" until the page loads
successfully. It's not ideal which is one reason why LibreOffice are going to
have it's own page.

The WollMux extension is listed on the extensions site but clicking on it leads
to a page missing error.

When downloading and trying to install it from a third party, it says it's
unable to be installed due to OOo not being installed.

Will there be a version available for LO?

Is there an archives site where such basic questions can be searched? The
mailing list signon doesn't mention any archives area.

Alex,

Hope this gets to you; I've never had a lot of luck with responses to the
List (I read gmane's NNTP).

ANYway, I don't disagree with anything you said, but figured it wouldn't
hurt to voice my opinions. Writer is what I use most right now and yeah,
I've seen stats on Base but I'm a one at a time kind of person .
Although I still think there is more that could be done I don't see any
dead horses around, so my stick is still put away. From my vewpoint though,
there needs to be a stop point where Writer et al are brought up to the
point where 90%+ of the users can have a relatively bug-free environment and
minimum, work-arounds pointed out for those that can't yet be fixed, for
whatever reason.
It would save exasperation on the part of your users and put a draw to
the product that hasn't yet been seen. As an example, I don't believe it's a
product that's ready for prime time at colleges or most businesses right
now. I know of two around here who tried to implement LO and previously an
OOo. They have since tossed it out and gone back to WP and MS respectively.
A third one I know of is OK so far and not having any problems because they
arean't asking it to do much more than secretarial jobs. That's only an
experience of 3, but when you consider it, t must translate to many more. I
only know this because I have business dealings with those three places. I
might sound pretty negatve, but I want LO to become big time and I don't see
how that can happen.

Thanks for listening!

True. The NNTP news group at gmane.com contains the same messages as are in

That's OK. Your post was positioned such that it looked like a post to me,
though when you make posts, unless you say so, everyone can get and read
your post and respond to it. It's not unusual to get responses from more
than one person.

> bshouldb or something, I don't know.

That's not a problem IMO, but here is something that IS important if view of
your post here.
1. If English isn't your native language, then you should say so in your
post so that the answers can be kept simpler and use more easily understood
words.
2. Have you checked to see if there is a list of newsgroup in your native
language? If so, that might be a better place to ask simple questions such
as this one was.
I suspect you have the answer you need by now, right?

> Anyway, I have always said that if someone is not
> subscribed it's not my problem that he or she doesn't
> receive my replies.

IMO (in my opinion), that's an error in your thinking. People not getting
your responses should put up a mental flag for you that something is not
right.
Also, when people are complaining that they don't get your response,
especially if it's more than one person, then you should start by assuming
there is a problem at your end. I suspect, but can't be sure of course, that
it's Google messing you up; it usually is. There are a lot of people who
won't accept mails from Google Groups and some won't accept ANYthing from
Google. They even have rules set up that simply drop anything from Google.

Although I'm not sure how you're responding, if you respond to the mailing
list, it will show up on NNTP (the gmane newsgroup). If you're using Google
to read newsgroups, then I understand: delivery problems are the norm there
and it's easy to let a response go astray, too. Google is simply not a good
newsgroup reader. And the mailing list fills your Inbox wth mails that have
nothing to do with your original post. In MY opinion, news readers are great
for reading mail.

[libreoffice-users] Problem with data conversion

2011-08-29 Thread James Wilde
Can't think of a better subject line.

This is about the Ubuntu repository version of LibO running under Ubuntu 11.04
linux. The repository version is described as follows:

Regards

//James

[libreoffice-users] New to Group, and so checking on Browser Plug-in

2011-08-29 Thread Russell Wilson
Trying to use LO 3.4.2 on Win 7 x64 and can't get browser plug-in to work --
been trying to read some of the LO manuals on line, so program/browser seems to
fail "half-way" --  screen gets half-greyed out (with white in other half of
window where od should be viewable but nothing to read!) -- thankfully pressing
back arrow enables previous page view, where document can be saved easily
enough -- not a big issue overall, compared to many others, but a pain none the
less.

Yes, indeed, as I have stated in his bug report.

I seem to recall that there is already an issue for that, but I could be
wrong.

Alex.

[libreoffice-users] 2Q -- WollMux for LibreOffice? -- Archives area?

2011-08-29 Thread Russell Wilson
The WollMux extension is listed on the extensions site but clicking on it leads
to a page missing error.

When downloading and trying to install it from a third party, it says it's
unable to be installed due to OOo not being installed.

Will there be a version available for LO?

Is there an archives site where such basic questions can be searched?  The
mailing list signon doesn't mention any archives area.

re: [libreoffice-users] Problems using VLOOKUP in Libreoffice Calc

2011-08-29 Thread Gérard FARGEOT
Hello,

> Objet : [libreoffice-users] Problems using VLOOKUP in Libreoffice Calc

> I have two columns set up like so:

a | 1
b | 2
c | 3

I want to be able to use a number from column B and have the text from
column A displayed.
But when I put {=vlookup(B4,A1:B3,1,0)} in cell A4, and {=max(B1:B3)} in B4
(minus the brackets for both), I get back, correctly, 3 for the max, but
#N/A for the VLOOKUP.
Putting in the letters a, b, or c in B4 correctly returns the number it's
next to, so it seems like only the first column in the array is searched.

Is it possible to flip the way the columns are searched?
Thanks for any help.

VLOOKUP search in the 1st column of the array, so you can't get a result in a
left column.
Use INDEX and MATCH for this :
=INDEX(A1:A3,MATCH(B4,B1:B3,0))
