Hi :)
I don't know much about this but

1.  Is your java version higher than _21?  if so it would be best to install
the _21 just for LibreOffice OpenOffice.  The more recent ones cause
problems.  Find out which version by
Tools - Options - LibreOffice/OpenOffice/General - Java

2.  Do you really need a spreadsheet?  A query or even a report can be made to
look like a spreadsheet?

Hi All

I have a couple of problems I need to solve urgently!!

I have two computers here -

1) Running Mint 10 KDE and Open Office 3.2.1
2) Running Mint 9 KDE and Libre-Office 3.3.2.2

I have developed and am running a Membership Database on a daily basis on
machine 1and it works perfectly!! I would like to create a Spreadsheet that
links to the Database. The DB is Registered on the system but if I do a
'InsertLink to external data', then browse to and select the Database file -
nothing happens and the 'link box' remains empty. If I do a 'ViewData Sources'
the whole Open-Office Suite just crashes' totally!! (I use Calc on a regular
basis also and it works fine).

On my second machine I have a separate copy of the Database file from machine 1
which is also Registered on that machine. If I try to run the database - 'LO
BaseOpen existing fileSelect fileOpen' The Base window opens and shows all
my Tables, forms etc. But when I select any of these I get the following
error...

Connection to 'My DB' couldn't be established.
GENERAL ERROR: org.hsqldb.lib.FileSystem RunTime Error:
Java.IO Exception:
/home/tinderbox/ooobuild/build/libre-3.3.2.2/package/source/xstor/xstorage.cxx:
:3323;

Also if I try to run my Database on this machine I get the exact same error. I
can select it and the Base window comes up showing all my tables, forms etc but
if I select anything the error comes up. This is very distressing as it means I
can not move to Libre-Office if I can't run my Database which works fine in
OO!!!

Any thoughts or suggestions on these problems??

Thanks in advance

Ian Whitfield.

2011-09-30 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think it's a 2nd email account belonging to the same person that got blocked
a few months ago and suddenly re-materialised a few days ago.

It's good to have people that feel so passionately about LibreOffice
OpenOffice although that passion is a bit wasted at the moment.  Perhaps if he
joined OASIS then he could help get font embedding added to the ODF spec.

I think the problem is with the spec rather than with the implementation.
Perhaps that might change now there is such a dynamic force driving the
OpenOffice/LibreOffice project forwards.  TDF is not going to be able to fix
the problems of the preceding decade overnight but it is working at pushing
things forwards across the board.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc and Base problems.

2011-09-30 Thread Andreas Säger
The integration of HSQLDB into a so called database document was the
biggest mistake ever. Just to be clear: HSQLDB is a great software and
so is LibreOffice. The way how both products are merged into one
container format generates a caricature of a database which looks and
feels a little bit like an MS Access file.

Creating a real HSQLDB and connecting a separate Base document to it is
very easy. Just set up a HSQLDB server for your local network or for the
local machine and import the script file of your embedded database.

I don't see that there is any facility to Export the notes alone to
PDF. You can *print* just the notes, of course: there is a Print
content section in the Print dialogue, and one option is Notes. If
you need a PDF file instead of printed pages, one workaround would be
to obtain a virtual PDF printer for your system and then to use the
Print functionality to create such files. Free versions of such
virtual PDF printer software are available. Another option would be
to obtain PDF editing software (again available in free versions) and
to use this to strip out from the PDF file exported from Impress just
the pages you wanted.

I trust this helps.

Hi Ian,

First, there are far more knowledgeable people responding here than I

suggestions are from my having used a database similar to yours for
years in Open Office, and since roughly 6 months in LibreOffice since I
switched from OpenOffice. I copy my database to 3 other computers
running LibreOffice (I did the same thing when I was using Open Office)
and I've never had any issues at all on any of the computers. So your
doing it should work perfectly fine. I also don't think this is a Java
issue. I'm assuming you have both LibreOffice and Open Office installed.
I've never had both on the same computer at the same time. When I moved
to LibreOffice, before I installed it, I removed Open Office. Maybe
there is a conflict on the second computer since I see ooobuild in the
path below. The second thought is maybe LibreOffice actually isn't
finding your database on the second computer. I would compare your
setup, paths, etc. on the first computer with the one on the second
computer, and make sure on the second computer LibreOffice is looking in
the right place for the database. I always have a folder under
home/documents/Database where I keep my database on all of the
computers.

Don

Don,

1) I run 5 versions of OOo (2.4.3/3.3/3.4beta) and LibO(3.3/3.4) on
the same machine without any trouble nor conflict. OOo 2.x, 3.x and
LibO behave as independent applications so I can run them at the same
time. If it were a Windows machine I would run MS Office, Word Perfect
or whatever as well.

First of all you should be aware about the database you are working
with. No, Base is *not* a database. Your database is indicated in the
status bar of the connected database document. If it claims to be
embedded then you need to understand that you are working with a
kind of plug-in that installs an external database.

2) I was not talking about the folder where to store the so called
database document. I was talking about the folder where the *true*
database gets extracted to while you start up your embedded HSQLDB.
Base is *not* a database program. You never work with Base. You
*always* utilize some office features in order to work with some
external database, even when it claims to be an integrated or
embedded database.
I strongly recommend to abstain from this type of database except for
demos and drafts.

Demo proposal (1 minute of time):
Look up your temp. folder in ToolsOptionsPaths and open that folder
in your preferred file manager.
Open any of your integrated database documents (status bar: embedded
HSQLDB).

Open any object table, query, form or report in your database.
Watch the temp. folder. This is the place where your HSQL database
actually lives.
Close the integrated database document and watch the database
disappearing.
The database will be lost when any office component crashes while the
database gets installed or repackaged respectively. Databases grow
over time. The larger the database, the more likely you will lose the
entire database so you need to restore it from backups.

3) In a Windows network I run a HSQLDB server and many clients. Each
client writes to the very same database simultaniously through
LibreOffice forms (could be any other database forms as well, Access
for instance). No matter which component crashes, there can not be any
data loss except the currently edited records. Of course I run daily
backups, but only on the server machine. On the clients there is
nothing to save.

Hi Andreas,

Thank you very much. Yes, I have an embedded data base, and yes, in the
temp folder when I open a form in the database a new temporary file
appears and when I close it the file goes away.

You have a much more elaborate system and use than I do. I have about
2,600 records in mine. I use it for doing some mail merge with writer,
and basically for keeping information and updates for clients I work
with. Is there a simple way to use the LibreOffice Front end with my
form and use another database for the database file without it becoming
a nightmare in trying to set it up? I'm running Ubuntu 11.04.

Thank you so much!

[libreoffice-users] New way for non coders to help with calc unit tests

2011-09-30 Thread Markus Mohrhard
Hello guys,

I want to present you the new way you can write build-time unit tests for
calc.
*
How are the tests organized?*

The tests are located in sc/qa/unit and consists of filters-test.cxx and the
files in sc/qa/unit/data. In the data directory there is one directory per
supported file extensions (ods, xls, xlsx) and one directory contentCSV that
only contains csv files. Please don't touch the other directories, they are
for special tests) At the moment we have a for-named-ranges test, a database
ranges test , a formatting test and a standard content test file.
Additionally there is one file per directory for bugfix tests so that import
bugs that are fixed once will not reoccur. If possible a new test case
should be added to each of the three directories so that we test as much as
possible for every filter.
*
What can we test?*

We can test the content of a calc document directly after loading it. It is
quite easy to test the content of cells, that means the formula in a cell,
the result as a value and the formatted result as a string. It is even
possible to test the result of cells that are part of conditional
formatting. It gets more complicated for other stuff since I don't have any
csv handler for that or it might need some code to test it.

We can't test any dynamic changes in calc documents with this test ( there
is ucalc for these cases). So for unit tests that try to emulate user input
and/or changes that go beyond what is done during loading, can't be tested
with this easy unit test.

*
How to write a new test?*

It's quite easy to write a new unit test.
The first step is to create a document that should be tested or
add/extend an existing sheet in a document.
The second step is to create for every sheet a csv file that contains
the expected result, formula or string that the test document should
contain.

*How can I get the existing files?*

Either you have the source code already than it is in sc/qa/unit or you can
get the files from:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/plain/sc/qa/unit/data

I will create a wiki page for these information soon but feel free to ask me
anything or make suggestions. I try to announce changes around this on the
QA list.

It would be amazing if some of the calc users would write or extend the
existing tests. Even if you could provide just one or two test cases you
would help very much ensure that our next release will contain less bugs and
that calc becomes even more stable.
Here are somethings, for instance, that could be tested or
the test extended:
 - normal content
 - data pilot/pivot table
 - the functions document should be extended to all build-in functions (
testing special cases, normal behaviour, etc. )
 - advanced functions like sorted content, autofilter, subtotals,
scenarios, etc.
 - some of the import bugs fixed during the 3-4 release cycle

I'm sure I missed a lot of important things and that is your big chance! Did
you ever wanted to commit something to Libreoffice source code but you don't
know how to code ? You don't have the time to get familiar with the code ?
This is the perfect opportunity to get your first commit ;) You have a nasty
bug that you don't want to see again ? Write a test file, add a csv file
with the expected content and send it to the
libreoffice...@lists.freedesktop.org list.

I'm looking forward to all your great contributions that will help us to
release a nice next version.

Regards,
Markus

Well, your small address db may well kept in the embedded HSQLDB if that
database is not constantly updated and you keep your daily backups and
if you can live with the fact that only one user has write access at the
same time. In case of a crash you would have to rewind the whole thing
to the last backup.
Our external HSQLDB is constantly updated from several client machines
at the same time. In case of a crash we would not lose many records (if
any). All I had to do was installing the HSQLDB server, extract the
script file from my embedded HSQLDB draft and write a configuration file
for the HSQL server. Finally I added a 5 log-in users to that database.
Writing configuration options for a server into a plain text file is a
small piece of work for a Linux user but may be a giant leap for a
Windows user. Databases are professional tools.
