Re: [libreoffice-users] Microsoft Works
Hi :) That is good to hear. Do they look ok when you open them or is the formatting all messed up? I would tend to favour using Works to change the format to doc, xls etc so that all the different Office Suites could open them properly. Hopefully soon most Office Suites will handle ODF 1.2 formats properly as it's a much better and safer format. The time of the doc and xls formats is likely to draw to a close as MS need to push people into using their newer products. Hopefully thee might be a way to do the conversion from the command-line and if so then it might be possible to convert a large number of documents quite quickly using some sort of script or batch file or something. Re: [libreoffice-users] Microsoft Works
Hi :) If Works is given out for free and it's native formats are incompatible with MS Office then it embarrasses people into spending tons of dosh on buying MS Office. It shows that a free system is inadequate and that the person using it is 'cheap'. Once embarrassed and publicly humiliated in such a way a person will typically cave-in and spend almost any amount of money to prove they are worthy. It makes people very wary of anything free and sets up all sorts of problems in trying to market LO. It is a very basic sales tactic. I do not have any Works files to test this on but with 3.4.X I have had success opening msox and mso files so would expect wps to open properly with LO. I looks to me that LO 3.4.3 will read Works files but will not write them, since Open list Works, but not Save As. If for some reason it does not open Works documents properly, you should be able to save the files within Works to some other format. It has been some years since I dealt with Works, but I have a copy or three to install on my Vista laptop to test this out if need be. To be honest, I do not know why MS still gives them out with some new computer systems, along with their trial of MSO. MSO did not like to deal with Works files a few years back when I was using MSO as my only office package. Very few packages will read Works documents. I can confirm that it is not possible to stretch a video beyond 100% (it will just resize the box, but not the video) in LO 3.4.4 under Windows (in my case XP SP3 x86) You can however shrink the video. So the conclusion is that it can interpolate but not extrapolate the image (also called upscaling) Since you mentioned that you used to be able to do this with LO, and I assume you don't want to go back to version 3.3.4, I suggest that you download version 3.3.4 Portable and use it to solve your problem. http://portableapps.com/apps/office/libreoffice_portable Since this is a regression I suggest that you could submit a bug report. -- View this message in context: http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Can-t-resize-videos-in-Impress-tp3506536p3515882.html Sent from the Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

For a explanation how such QA platforms work, please see the faq[4] and my short explanation here: * QA forums don't provide room for general discussions, polls, rants etc. and are therefore more targeted. * Users can select correct answers and vote for answers. Selected and most voted answers are shown first, drastically improving clarity. * User activities such as answering questions or voting answers leads to karma. With more karma, the rights of users grow until the user has full moderation rights. This allows to grow a self sustaining community. * Answers can be edited collaboratively (so called community wiki posts) Of course, trying it out is worth a thousand words :) Cu, Alex [1]: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/website/msg06443.html [2]: http://stackoverflow.com/ [3]: http://osqa-test.libreoffice.org/questions/ask/ [4]: http://osqa-test.libreoffice.org/faq/ Hi Alex, I also had a look and it just looks like a system where people looking for help would have to work too hard to figure out how to use it to look for help. By a few I mean less than a dozen. :-) Peter HB On 17/11/11 19:29, Alex Thurgood wrote: Le 17/11/2011 18:33, John Gregson a écrit : Hi John, I can now open some of the MS Works, Word Processor files (.WPS) However, I find that any Works file .wps; that has a Table in it will not open in Libre Office. Sorry to hear that. Many Win7 users may not be able to afford MS Office proper use MS Works. MS Works version 9.0 in Win7 (that is included for free in most Win7 versions... at least it is in Win7 Home Premium) is actually quite a nice suite. Were I not a linux user used Win7 outside of testing, and didn't know about OOo/LO, I'd be quite comfortable using it on a regular basis. Note: I am quite familiar with MS Office 2003 and earlier (I have MSO 97, 2002, and 2003). http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=003active_tab=Features I think that LO would be making a mistake by not continuing to support MS Works files (at the the newer versions), at least to properly open and display the files. @John Gregson: I just did a test MS Works (9.0) file with a small table in it. Four columns, 4 rows. When saved as an .wps the table in LO 3.4.4 appears as: [OBJ][OBJ][OBJ][OBJ] Test Test1 ... Test17 In other words, the table is not present instead converted to text. Note: I just filled the table with Test, Test1 etc. No idea what the ' [OBJ][OBJ][OBJ][OBJ]' bits are about. I then saved the same file (from MS Works) as a .doc file reopened in OOo 3.3.0 (table appears fine, albeit outside the page text borders), and in LO 3.4.4 with the same results as OOo 3.3.0. I'd have to uninstall LO 3.4.4 to test with LO 3.3.4, perhaps a Win7 user w/LO 3.3.4 can test as well? -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-users] Re: Styles not saving
Interesting. That was mostly what I was looking for, how to move a new template into default. However, just to make sure I understand it, I cannot apply this 'template' to existing documents? So, for instance, I export a table from my database to view in Calc, it will not use this format. I tried this with a csv I had already been working on in LO, and can verify that the new template did not get applied. I also created a csv with a text editor, then opened it in Calc, and it still not following the new default. Shame. I want to define a global style, specifically in Calc, so that when I open a certain type of csv, i can quickly format a set of columns for easy human readability. Thus far, I've been able to format a column, define the style from that selected column, but it does not save for any length longer than that specific file is open. Is there something I am missing? Hi, Well, kind of. There are default templates for different document types - and yes styles are maintained in a document and (this is the important point to your queston) in the template the document is based on. So - if you want to make a new style available beyond just the document it is added to, you need to add it to your default template - this way any new documents will pick up the new style. NOTE - this will not make it available to existing documents, only new documents going forward. As a starting reference point you may want to take a quick look here: http://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Change_default_template I hope that helps and don't hesitate to follow up with more questions. Howdy, Not sure how to answer this. If this were an ODF Text document then to apply a template to an existing document - you acquire an extension: Template Changer by Andre Schnable However I do not think the extension works with Spreadsheets. So - I guess I'll kick it back to the list: How to apply a template to an existing Calc file? //drew -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

drewjensen wrote: How to apply a template to an existing Calc file? This is a quite interesting thread. I'm learning a lot from it ;) I would say there isn't a way to change the template unless Andre Schnable modifies his extension to apply to Calc files as well :) Apparentely you can't even use styles from another Spreadsheet or Template because there is no New Style from Selection button in Calc's Style and Formatting toolbar. http://help.libreoffice.org/Writer/Using_Styles_From_Another_Document_or_Template BTW There is an error in the Extensions site: Template Changer (was it added today?) is named without any file extension (in this case should be .oxt) -- View this message in context: http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Styles-not-saving-tp3517061p3517988.html Sent from the Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

As with most everything else in LO development, if people need that functionality so badly, then they can help themselves...to help themselves, by either getting stuck into the code or finding someone they can pay/bribe/persuade to fix it.
