Ok, thanks Dan.

That document contains no object folders. Meaning that if an object were
embeded in the document, the document when extracted should have
folders/directories for each embedded object. Example:
LOProbs1.odt_FILES
LOProbs1.odt_FILES/Object 1
LOProbs1.odt_FILES/Object 2
LOProbs1.odt_FILES/Object 3
etc.

Further, the
LOProbs1.odt_FILES/ObjectReplacements
shows two files at zero bytes (Object 1 and 31) and only one with any
data in the xml file: Object 9.

Ok, I'm obviously doing something incredibly stupid.  I'll go away and work it

Perhaps you misunderstood what I meant.

What I meant was "it feels mean to say that someone values a person's

all of their contributions". Especially when it is someone that produces
so much good for the LO community (say in the area of free documentation).

Reminds me of a movie where a soldier is asked something like "how can
you shoot women and children" and the response "it is easy, you just
don't lead them so much".

Why is this important? Unless images are lost after creation of an odf
document.

If you were to write to m$ and comment that m$ can create an odf11
document but not an odf12 version, what would be the likely response.

It is certainly not any more important than support for any of the other
numerous formats supported by OOo. Interoperability has always been very
difficult. What formats would you continue to support.

Nothing wrong with support of multiple formats, except that perfect
behaviour/performance with the odf must be the top priority.

Note that I am not in a position to dictate to my boss or my companies
clients what products they will use. Note that I do have full access to
pretty much any MS product that I care to use, so if a MS format is not
supported, then I must do all work with a MS deliverable in MS.

That should continue; if the output required is m$, use m$. There is
no advantage to use LO to create m$ documents.

I could provide a list of reasons as to why I would prefer to use LO and
then simply write to DOCX if that is what is needed, but, the brief
version is

(1) I just like LO much better that MSO interface just kills me.

(2) Historically, there have been things that I did trivially in OOo /
LO that I and a group of long time MSO users were unable to reproduce in
MSO that was trivial in OOo.

My Macro Document: http://www.pitonyak.org/AndrewMacro.odt

Off-topic, but takes a long time to load directly from the web via
abiword...daren't try LO...

Is the issue related to download speed or the internal document
arrangement? if it is the later, resaving the document with a newer
version may help, but I have not touched that document directly in a bit
because there was a bug in OOo that caused it to crash. The bug was
fixed but never made it into the last OOo release. LO deals with the
document just fine, but since the latest version of LO sometimes drops
graphics, I am hesitant to touch the document with that either.

Don't know. The purpose of accessing directly from the web is to avoid
saving to the local disk.

I understand...

>>of the rendering of the OLE object is not selected?

I'm creating the OLE objects from Insert/Object/OLE object, so I'm presuming
they're embedded.

I'm not quite sure where this is.  If it's the one that is
Libreoffice/Preferences/Writer/View/Tables and Objects, then yes.

 >> 2. Are you using more than one computer for this work?    And is the
original application that produces the OLE object available on each machine
where you want to view the document correctly?

No, I'm not.  I am storing it and accessing it from Dropbox.  However, as this
service stores the file locally, it shouldn't affect this.

I'll give that a go for ones I create from now on.

Thanks again,

David.

  1. Are you making sure that the OLE object is embedded and not just linked?
Are you also making sure that the option to show a thumbnail instead of the
rendering of the OLE object is not selected?

  2. Are you using more than one computer for this work? And is the original
application that produces the OLE object available on each machine where you
want to view the document correctly?

  3. You might do better pasting the drawing from the application where you are
creating it into the destination document, using Copy and Paste [Special...] as
appropriate to select a vector-graphic insertion.

It is often the case that a bad bitmapped version of an image will be used as a
substitute when the vector-graphic form cannot be accessed/utilized for some
reason.

[libreoffice-users] Embedded OLE Objects in Write

2012-02-24 Thread DavidC
Dear Collective Brains Trust,

I spent about three hours yesterday creating some very nice draw documents from
within write (Insert/Object/OLE Object/Create New).  Now I open up the thesis
this morning, and they've been replaced by large pixelated pictures of what I
presume is supposed to be a plug (for the plugin?)  A screenshot is available
here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17999770/LOProb.png

Now it's not a total nightmare.  I can grit my teeth, spend the hours
recreating the documents and save them as svgs (which I probably should have
done in the first place).  But I'd really rather not.

Has anyone else had this problem?  What did you do about it?  For reference,
I'm running LO3.5 on a Mac.

Hi,
No problem here.  I am running Win7 professional SP1 and have upgraded to
3.5.0 without any issues.

However, I still have the same issue of not being able to use the local help
pack.  It appears to install but I directed to the online help.  This is the
same as 3.4.5.

Has anyone been able to help with this yet?  Does anyone know good answers?
This is about corporate deployment right?  There is an excellent wiki in the

Sorry i have lost track of it again

Re: [libreoffice-users] Restoring List of 'Recent Documents' [RESOLVED]

2012-02-24 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Lol, almost none of the devs get paid.  Most of those that are probably have to
manage people rather than code.  So, it's a PITA for them as it only stops them
from working on the more fun stuff like long-runing issues or awesome new
features and generally being like a rockstar.

That sort of thing would only be useful for proprietary systems and even then
it's unlikely the same dev would be assigned to fix it.  It would be someone
new that had no experience with that bit of code while the person breaking it
would have been given something new to break.

Ooops, was that a bit cynical?  I'm outside the industry so i am only
guessing.

Tom :)

May I ask where you got the information you needed CUPS for LibreOffice [on
Linux] to work?

I have been using LibreOffice on Linux since it came out and this is the first
time I heard that statement.

I use Ubuntu 10.04LTS.

I wanted the PDF printer for my system, so I installed CUPS-PDF.  I did not do
it for LO.  I wanted to be able to print to a PDF file for my browser and my
email package.  There is an issue with "export to PDF" that involves
specialized fonts not exporting correctly, but "normal" fonts seems to work
fine.  So I use CUPS-PDF printer to print out these documents with specialized
fonts and such that LO does not do properly.  I am told that issue is being
worked on.

Remove yourself from the lists and get set up with Nabble.

Nabble has the info on these lists, but in a browser based format, so no

To be honest, you might want to use a different option in the

You can always unsubscribe and then subscribe to the "nomail" option and then
just use Nabble or GMane to subscribe to single threads.

I tried the nomail option without unsubscribing from the list but i still get

not do it for LO. I wanted to be able to print to a PDF file for my
browser and my email package. There is an issue with "export to PDF"
that involves specialized fonts not exporting correctly, but "normal"
fonts seems to work fine. So I use CUPS-PDF printer to print out these
documents with specialized fonts and such that LO does not do properly.
I am told that issue is being worked on.

When you create a new XML Form, and put a text box on it, there is a

This might be the same with other types as well.
A workaround to remove the border is to create a Label field first,

Good afternoon Dries Feys,
Provided that I got your problem correctly try this:
A text box is a control you insert in different sheets LibreO-Writer,
Calc, Base etc.

>> right-click the text box control and click 'control'
>>the drop down list shows the text box control's properties =>
find 'border'

Moreover, I DO often get frustrated and find my self typing RTFM, bit that is

Actually, I was referring to the guidelines as originally stated. The

posting and once to add a reference to the same source cited by the article
generally. I was not engaged in any falsehood; I just don't check guidelines

[libreoffice-users] Impress dies without indications - how do I research further?

2012-02-24 Thread Jan Schoubo
Out of a bunch of 19 PowerPoint PPT files I have the same problem with 4 of
them (the other 15 works perfectly):

They all open fine, look very good (much more accurate than LibO 3.3 :-) )
and I can modify them without problems.
However, saving them - Save ("Microsoft PowerPoint 97/2000/XP/2003" or Save
as ("LibreOffice .odp") - results in
Impress dying without any messages.

Restarting allows me to recover - which works fine - but saving again has
the same results.

Now, the documents are confidential, so I can't post them, but can you point
me to how I can maybe figure out which
constructs in the documents are giving the problem?
[I am a very experienced developer, so I know a lot about code, but not the
code or internal structure of LibreOffice]

I run LibreOffice 3.5.0 on Ubuntu 11.04 64bit.

Any pointers will be much appreciated.

Hi :)
Did you ever manage to find an answer for this or is it still a problem? Sorry
you have not had any answers from the Users List so far. Hopefully someone
knows how to solve this!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Body500 wrote
Hi all,
I've noticed something annoying with AutoLayout objects in Impress. This is
what I did:

1. create an empty presentation and edit the slide master
2. edit the height of the main AutoLayout text box (the one that usually
contains the main content)
3. Make sure that the text box is not set to auto size, either under "text..."
or under "size and position"
4. close master view

Now if I choose a layout that displays this AutLayout area, the height of it is
set to whatever I made it be and all is fine. Here's the problem. I now save
this document and close it. When I open it again the AutoLayout is still the
same as before I closed it, but if I change the layout the height of the
AutoLayout goes back to what it was before I changed it in the master. If I now
open the master view I see that indeed the master has also changed.

I can change the slide master again and repeat the whole process but nothing
fixes this. I've tried locking the size and position of the text box but that
is ignored. I've flipped all sorts of checkboxes but haven't found a solution
yet.

All this is happening in LO 3.5.0 rc3 but also happened in the 3.4.5 version. I
haven't tried older versions. Running win7 64-bit.

Anyone else see this happen, and if so is there a fix (I'm assuming it's a
feature and not a bug).

[libreoffice-users] How to intsall without CUPS?

Hi!

Is it possible to build/install Libreoffice on a Linux system without
CUPS?. I would like to use the office suit but don't like to have that
awesome CUPS stuff on my machine. Formerly OpenOffice did not require
CUPS. Why is it now required as a hard dependency? Why can't print jobs
just be written to a file and or send to a configurable helper
program/script?

Not everybody likes to blow up his system installation with many unused
modules/programs.

The StarBasic language is almost fully documented in the F1 help. The

There are thousands of well done code snippets on the internet

The main problem is that to many people never programmed anything but
VBA and even within VBA they rely entirely on default objects, code

Using the MRI extension and knowing some dozends of facts by heart, I
can find most of the methods, properties and reference pages for any

[libreoffice-users] calc problem

2012-02-24 Thread Václav Medek

Hi,

I would like to ask you how to solve a problem with Calc. Ill try to
explain you how to reproduce it.

Just open any web page in your browser and find there an e-mail contact
which is in html link form. I.e. users+subscr...@global.libreoffice.org

Copy this contact with ctrl+c and try to paste it to Calc list with ctrl+v.

What happen is, that some "import dialog" appear and you must click your
decision. In that dialog there is no checkbox like "remember my decision
and dont ask again". So when you need to copy+paste like 400 email
addresses, you must everytime click this dialog. This is bad, very bad...
So my question is: is there any option how to turn this dialog off? I
didn't find it...

LibreOffice 3.4.4 in Ubuntu 11.10.

Thank you,
V. Medek

Let's start with the first chain link. Seemingly you have some
collection of spreadsheets you want to read as if they were a database.
For several reasons the sheets of a calculator program are the worst
container medium to store data for any database purposes.

1) Anyhow, how do the data look like? Can you post a few lines of data
here? Just copy the first 3 lines of a list and paste into your mail client.
2) Are there more than one database-like lists in one spreadsheet
document? Do these lists share the same structure of fields (columns)?
3) Are there many spreadsheets you want to use like that? Do they also
share the same structure of columns?
4) Are you sure that your data are consistent across columns, sheets and
documents? Can you be sure that date columns contain nothing but dates
and numeric columns contain nothing but numbers?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Top posting

2012-02-24 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I did not change them but i applaud whoever did.

The main argument that the bottom-poster-fanatics use in order to demand that
everyone else is only allowed to bottom post is that the guidelines suggest
doing so.  That is clearly not working so the guidelines needed to be changed
to support what the target-market of this list are more comfortable with.

In my opinion people should be allowed to post as they want without being
subjected to the bullying of the bottom-posters.  That view seems to be
supported by everyone that top-posts that has commented in this thread.

Can we not accept that the main purpose of this thread is to answer people's
questions and make them feel comfortable about asking questions?  Clearly not.
It seems the main aim of this list, according to the bottom-posters, is
1.  to keep subjecting us all to this pointless argument,
2.  to bully anyone that doesn't obey them
3.  to make people uncomfortable about asking questions for fear of
intimidation.

If the guidelines now say that only top posting is acceptable then that is
great because none of the top-posters are going to use those guidelines to
bully people.  None of the top-posters are going to claim that the guidelines
are rules and not really guidelines at all.

Regards from
Tom :)

Q: What is the most annoying thing in e-mail?

In my entire life I have never seen any mailing list or Usenet group with so
much top-posting and unneeded quotes as this one. Since this is user support
group, it should be just ignored in most cases (we want to help user, not
bully them). But I think that people who often write to group should adapt to
basic mailing etiquette. It isn't that hard, really.

I hate bottom (!) posting because I think it is the most unnatural one!

When I speak to you I normally answer to your question without (!)
repeating your question first!!! This is "The natural way", isn't it???

When I read one mail (in a mailing list too!!!) I normally have already
red all the previous ones!!! All the previous ones!!!
If I failed to do it, I already would have to know that I'll must start
from bottom... Full stop, imho!

I think bottom posting is born only (!) to enable people to start
reading a thread from any point and not from the start... But what we
yield is far from be a "natural way"...: when I read one mail I expect
to read the answer to the the previous one, that is supposed to already
be red!

My 2 euro cents! ;-)

2012-02-24 Thread Stefano Fraccaro

Hi Marc,
I think that the main question is : want you help someone in this
list or not? In Italy we say that "No one is born master"... I' a
software developer but I don't know all languages that are available in
the world. Each person expresses their thoughts to the best of their
abilities... and if you are a "master" you need to understand that. A
master that is an island is not useful... you can tell me about your
knowledge, maybe I can tell you about my patience :)
If you hate messages that need long scroll down... simply ignore them,
but remember that user mailing lists are used worldwide by "juveniles"
(if I'm an advanced user, I don't need a mailing list) ;-)

One reason I am not more involved in this community is the incessant whining

as my comment would not be really benefitted by a long scroll down a thread of
shame, lol Chin up, Tom, and hope that some may find Apache a snugger fit
;-) I rarely take much notice of those focused on puffing themselves up; lack
of O2 usually brings them to their senses.

I think my data is complete, I'm not sure what you mean with "in respect
to equal scaled axes". But I tried now and increased one value by factor
500, then the rest looks okay.

How it look

Here with one value increased

the ods:

maybe the bubble chart is not the best tool to visualize theses data.

The problem was btw. to show the bandwith or latency in a cluster.
so x and y are computer and the circle shows in this example show the
latency.

many thanks for you help and best regards!

I don't get involved in these disputes, mainly because they are
characterised by intransigence and _ad hominem_ arguments - and I
won't do so now. But you simply cannot expect to argue based on a
falsehood! When you wrote this, the guidelines (at
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette ) did not suggest top
posting, but rather anything but:

... please do interspersion with trimming [...]. For a simple reply,
this is equivalent to bottom-posting. So, remove extraneous
material, and place your comments in logical order, after the text
you are commenting upon.

But since then someone has changed this to remove any sort of
guidance at all. Perhaps you made the change?! Or perhaps the
original culprit did? It's a fun system - isn't it? - when those who
are directed to guidelines and find they don't like them simply change them!

Hi :)
Sounds good.  It's a bit sad that we all have to use MS formats in order to
communicate.  Of course i disagree with your thoughts about Odf but there is
enough room in the world for both opinions.  Your thoughts are as valid as
anyone elses.

Tom :)

OK on the spell-check word addition.  Some  things I like about WP:  It does
quotation marks, both single and double,  apostrophies, inch-marks and
foot-marks just about perfectly.  It can read and write almost any format. It
has a quick way to get to all kinds of
symbols and foreign characters, quite a bit beyond what you can get with a
Compose key or AllChars. I wish Corel would once
again sell a Linux version--the original one cannot be loaded onto a modern
Linux system.

To answer the question:  If I am writing  to send on the Internet, I use MS
.doc format.  If I am writing for my own purposes,
for example, to write a letter that will go in snail-mail, I usually use the WP
format.  I never use .odf; I believe that you should use
formats that other people besides Linux-users can read.  I wish .odf would just
go away; there;s no need for it.
