[libreoffice-users] TeX output crashes LibreOffice

2012-05-23 Thread Sandy Harris
I have a document originally written with L-O but saved in Word (.doc)
format. Eight pages, no very complex formatting. One column, section
headings, endnotes, a couple of tables. Exporting a PDF or HTML works
fine.

Trying to export in TeX format crashes L-O every time. It goes to
work, there's a progress bar across the bottom of the screen. It goes
most of the way across then hangs. If I try to stop it, I get a "this
window is not responding" message. Saving in ODT format instead did
not help; the ODT file crashes it too. Changing the "backend" field in
the menu page that comes up when exporting does not seem to help
either.

There are obvious workarounds -- for example I can export plain text
and manually apply TeX tags or export RTF and use a command-line tool
to get to TeX -- but I'd sooner not have to do that.

This happens on two different machines, both Ubuntu. This one is
Xubuntu 12.04 with "LibreOffice 3.5.3.2 Build ID: 350m1(Build:2)" and
all available Xubuntu updates applied. It is a 3GHz dual core i3
machine with 8 gigs RAM and SSD disks so I don't think resource limits
are the problem. The other machine is less powerful and has less
up-to-date versions of everything.

Thanx for the input, Marc. As an engineer (now retired) I always found
ways NOT to use a spreadsheet unless it was some kind of
scheduling or accounting problem. There are so many math programs that
treat math like you would write it on paper. But I suppose if
you are taught from the cradle, as it were, to use Excel you will be
used to it.

I want nothing displayed if the other cells have nothing in them.

A1 = 10
A2 = 20
A3 = 30
A4 = sum(A1 + A2 + A3 - 5)

Prior to entering data into A1 thru A3, A4 will display -5. I want A4 to be
blank, or at least appear so until something is entered into A1,2 or 3 that
will bring A4's value >= 0.

Another possible way to do this:
1) Select the arrow.
2) CTRL+C (as another mentioned, the creates a copy of the arrow on top
of the original arrow.
3) Use the arrow keys to move the copied arrow to where you want it.
(The original arrow remains where it was.)

In the cell try this

=if(expression>=0,expression,""), where expression is the
expression/function already in the cell. As written the if statement
will put 0 or positive number in the cell and an empty string in the
cell if it is negative.

=if(expression>0, expression,"") will only put a value in the cell if
the expression >0, otherwise it places an empty string.

I think that it is not true for ooBasic.
I have a friend that never had contact with computer programming. At end of
last year I told him about how to create new functions in Calc not entering
in details, just telling this as curiousity.
Now he is able to create complex functions in basic by himself.
By the way, in last 6 months I spent no more than 1 day teaching him.

You want the ABS function:

=ABS(-56) returns 56.

=ABS(12) returns 12.

=ABS(0) returns 0.

It does copy and it does paste. But it pastes in the way that overwrites
selected element with copied element. Therefore it may look like not working.
So:
1. Draw your arrow
2. Select it and press Ctrl+C
3. Deselect it - click somewhere outside
4. Press Ctrl+V
5. Move arrow around (you may use arrow keys).

Have you unselect the arrow before you insert it with CTRL+V ?

You can drag the arrow into the gallery and use it from there. This is
useful, if you use not straight arrows but have designed curved ones.

If you go to view->toolbars and turn on drawing menu you can add lines

copy and adjust it for subsequent arrows to save reformatting lines.

[libreoffice-users] Extremely Slow Base Report Builder

2012-05-23 Thread Girvin R. Herr

Greetings,
I have installed LibreOffice (LO) 3.5.3.2 and I am quite pleased with
it. I am a long-time OpenOffice (OOo) user going back to 1.0 and even
Star Office before that and after not being able to install the latest
Apache OpenOffice (AOO) version, I switched to LibreOffice. I say that
to confirm I am a new user to LO, but somewhat experienced with the
*Office tree.

I used Oracle Report Builder 1.2.1-rev2 on my OOo 3.3.0 for some time
and expected the LO Report Builder to be fine, especially since
configuring & importing my MySQL databases, forms, queries, etc. worked
great. Report Builder does seem to work - sort of- but it is extremely
slow when executing the report. So slow, it is unusable; taking minutes
to display a report in Writer. Then it keeps repeatedly going out to
lunch for long periods so I cannot do anything with the report in
Writer, such as scrolling down to examine the report. I am using the
following database server:

   MySQL 5.0.67
   MySQL-connector-java-5.0.7-bin.jar
   Sun Java 1.6.0u11

A few months ago, I had a similar problem with OOo 3.3.0 after I updated
my Java RE to 1.6.0u30. I posted my problem on the OOo Users forum and
was told OOo 3.3.0 will only work with Java up to u22. That problem did
not just affect Report Builder, but the entire Base functionality. This
time with LO, the non-Report Builder Base functions work fine, at
"normal" speed. I do not see any hesitation with Base form data entry.

Is my current Report Builder problem caused by this Java problem again?
Unlike OOo 3.3, will LO 3.5.3 work with the later Java versions and
should I try updating my Java again?
I also have a Free Software Foundation Java 1.4.2 installed, but I think
I read somewhere not to use it with LO.

Any suggestions where to look would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Girvin Herr

If you're lucky, you might be able to find a file named "core" somewhere
on your system that would have been created when the app went belly up.
It used to be quite common on Linux systems, but seems to have fallen by
the wayside in many Linux distributions unless specifically activated in
some way (on a system level, or with a debug build of the app in
question). The file may or may not be visible to the normal user, so you
might have to do a search as root or sudo to try and find it.

You would also try looking for a file "hs_error_pid.log", this also
provides a snapshot of the apps libraries loaded into memory at the time
it crashes.

Also try installing your distrib's versions of the debug symbols that
are generally provided for such purposes, and then reproduce the crash.
This should leave you with one or the other of these files.

Ultimately, you could always use the Gnu debugger gdb and attache the
soffice process to it, then make the app crash as you describe, that
would give you something to start with.

Is the folder, containing the user's files mapped to a drive letter,
e.g. U: ? In that case you can edit the bootstap.ini and point to that
folder.

Do you have a true domain, so that the user profile is copied to the
server, when the user logout? Then you need not worry, that it is C: The
temp folder, which LO uses is not the system temp folder, but a temp
folder in the profile.

The bootstrap.ini uses syntax like $SYSUSERCONFIG for the folder with
the users WinXP profile, or $ORIGIN for the folder with the file
bootstrap.ini. I don't know which variables are known besides that two.

Another way: If your users don't need to start LO with double click on a
file, you can give them a start icon, which calls LO with the
-env:UserInstallation= parameter.

With "new" user do you mean new to the system or new to LO?

Kind regards

Thanks Regina. I'll take a look at the bootstrap.ini file and the variables
that you mentioned.

The "new" user would be a new LO user. Fortunately we don't have a lot of
personnel turnover.

When the user logs out, anything on the C: drive would not be copied. I'm
not too worried about the temp files, but we'd like the users' to be able to
default to their network directory when they go to File/Open. The less they
have to navigate to get there, the better.

Hi :)
I think Edubuntu might be worth trying out?
http://www.edubuntu.org/

(sorry e-letter!)

Perhaps test-drive a LiveCd?  Even tho it 'should' be about 100 times slower
than a proper dual-boot install onto a normal ide hard-drive, even bigger
difference with sata and vast difference with SSDs of course but assuming you
are using Windows on a normal ide hard-drive then a LiveCd 'should' seem about
100 times slower.  In fact it generally feels tons faster purely because of
Gnu&Linux power :)

file, you can give them a start icon, which calls LO with the
-env:UserInstallation= parameter.

With "new" user do you mean new to the system or new to LO?

Kind regards

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: installation of LO35; removal oy LO33 required?

2012-05-23 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
The 3.5.3 seems a lot more stable than the 3.5.2!  Far, far fewer people
writing in about it!!  Hopefully the 3.5.4 will be even better.  It's probably
still best to stick with the 3.4.6 where you need something reliable but the
3.5.3 is definitely worth taking for a test-drive if you can.

@ Pedro, i think the bias mentioned was Ubuntu rather then other Gnu&Linux (or
possibly Bsd) distros rather than Windows! Lol.  Good to see an elegant (and
probably deliberate) misunderstanding there! :)

I have a feeling that people often say Ubuntu when they are really using one of
the "clones" or Mint or others in the same family.  Like i often say Firefox
when i am really using Seamonkey which uses the Firefox engine (gecko i think)
and is produced by the same people.  It just makes it easier to get to an
answer quicker sometimes.

Regards from
Tom :)

Sure when you narrow your search as you did:
Severity: blocker, critical, major[1]
OS: Linux (All)
Hardware: x86 (IA32)
Status: NEW, ASSIGNED, REOPENED
Version: LibO 3.5 Daily, LibO 3.5.2 RC1, LibO 3.5.2 Release, LibO
3.5.3 RC1, LibO 3.5.3 release, LibO 3.5.4 RC1
Product: LibreOffice

Try your search again using the same versions[1], but all OS & hardware,
and Severity not set to blocker, critical, major:
Status: NEW, ASSIGNED, REOPENED
Version: LibO 3.5 Daily, LibO 3.5.2 RC1, LibO 3.5.2 Release, LibO
3.5.3 RC1, LibO 3.5.3 release, LibO 3.5.4 RC1, LibO 3.5.4 RC2
Product: LibreOffice

(157 bugs found.)

And seeing as how you wish to focus on linux, again using the versions,
but include all OS and hardware and Severity not set to blocker,
critical, major:
OS: Linux (All)
Status: NEW, ASSIGNED, REOPENED
Version: LibO 3.5 Daily, LibO 3.5.2 RC1, LibO 3.5.2 Release, LibO
3.5.3 RC1, LibO 3.5.3 release, LibO 3.5.4 RC1, LibO 3.5.4 RC2
Product: LibreOffice

(38 bugs found. )

[1] You've elected to search on:
Severity: blocker, critical, major
Hardware: x86 (IA32)
So, sure you are likely to only get a few bug results. Doing the same
(limiting to blocker, critical, major and x86) using 'All' results in 13
bugs found.

[2] In addition to 3.5.3, you also included Daily, 3.5.2, and 3.5.4 RC1.
If you are going to include 3.5.4 RC's, then you should include LibO
3.5.4 RC2.

[libreoffice-users] LO 3.4.2 network variables

2012-05-23 Thread Karen DInse
We are using Windows XP, SP3. Applications and user's files are stored on
the network. I'm able to install LO 3.4.2 to the network, and I'm able to
distribute the applications to various users. However, the Write Path for
users' files and temp files shows the C: drive.

Is there a way to have those paths changed to use network variables? We use
'DEPT' and 'USER' or 'DEPTNAME' and 'USERNAME' for our login variables. I
know that the registrymodifications.xcu can be edited each time a new user
signs on, but is there a way to use variables in the xcu file? I've tried
putting the variables in quotes, or enclosing them with percent (%) signs,
but neither of those options work.

Spreadsheets (LibreOffice Calc) are confusing even to those who are
comfortable with algebra. The notation is clumsy! I wouldn't think

that is something that should be inflicted upon kids under 13!

That said, Calc, as any other spreadsheet, can do all the "basic" math
functions--add, subtract, multiply, divide. It can do calendar functions,

and of course, monetary functions like percentage.

To me, it would make more sense to teach beginning programming, using a
language like Python. Programming languages can do math also,
of course, but they have so much other capability, and the modern
digital world virtually demands some understanding of programming.
(Back in the "dark ages" of the 70s or so, kids learned BASIC on
Commodore and Amiga computers. Real programmers hated BASIC,
but you could do a lot with it, in spite of the professionals' disdain.
Unfortunately, the "easy" BASIC of those days is gone now, and its
modern descendants require the user to create "visual" inputs and
outputs and work in GUI environments. Phooey!

I have both LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice Writer in the Open
With... list. Why do you think, that it is not possible?
My 'open with' only shows OO now that I've done the upgrade -- it was
not true before.
So I do the 'choose program', it gives me a list of some suggested ones,
and in the list of not-so-suggested one, LO is not there. So I browse
and get programs/LO3.4/swriter.exe, choose OK and it still is not added
to my list of choices.
I'm assuming the program name is the same under OO and though the path
gives it's full uniqueness in naming, that doesn't it.

You can do even more. WinXP gives you an UI to add an item to the
context menu. So you can add a 'Open with AOO' and 'Open with LO'.
Click on "Extras" > "Folder Options" in the menu bar of the Windows
Explorer. Click on tab "File types". Goto odt (for example) in the
file list and click on it. Now in the lower part some buttons are
enabled. Click on "Extended". That's the lowest one.

Same results as before.

You get a dialog page to create and alter context menu items. Click on
"New". In the upper field type the text do you want to see in the
context menu. In the lower field type the path to the application, for
example to swriter.exe from LO (or search with the button). Quote the
path inclusive filename, because it likely has spaces. After the path
enter the parameter -o "%1". Click OK. The parameter -o stand for
"open", but you can use the other parameters mentioned in the help as
well.
At your suggestion, I went to the individual 'calls' within ODT and
changed each call from

(mumble)Open Office(mumble)
to
(same mumble)LibreOffice(mumble)
and my day is saved, I now can double-click my files and they open.

But I shouldn't have to do this.
I believe Open Office, via (the evil empire of) Oracle is doing things
nefarious.
Thanks to you I can recover, I'll now move on and let others address
this at a higher level if they so desire.

I have a German WinXP and therefore my translations might not give the
exact terms you see in your English XP, but I hope you find the places.

These are the system DSN and ODBC configuration files. You generally

These are the hidden, user DSN and ODBC configuration files. These files

odbcinst.ini defines the name of the ODBC drivers present on the system,
and the locations/libraries to be used when an ODBC connection protocol
is invoked by a third party application, see the examples below that I
have on my Macbook :

[ODBC Drivers]

[libreoffice-users] installation of LO35; removal oy LO33 required?

2012-05-23 Thread e-letter
Readers,

Unfortunately, it is required to change from LO33 to LO35 to use a
particular new feature.

Where is the report within QA that shows LO35 passed standard quality tests?

It's hard to believe that this version has only 6 bugs! (See:
https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/buglist.cgi?bug_severity=blocker&bug_severity=critical&bug_severity=major&op_sys=Linux%20%28All%29&query_format=advanced&rep_platform=x86%20%28IA32%29&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&version=LibO%203.5%20Daily&version=LibO%203.5.2%20RC1&version=LibO%203.5.2%20Release&version=LibO%203.5.3%20RC1&version=LibO%203.5.3%20release&version=LibO%203.5.4%20RC1&product=LibreOffice)

Is this true, that LO353 is near perfect?

The web page 'installation of LO33 on gnu/linux' does not state
whether a new (rpm) version can be installed directly in an existing
LO directory, or that the directory should be deleted.

There is too much bias in favour of ubuntu users (but then that is a
biased opinion!).

Is there really significant change in language packs between versions?

Are language pack and help packs significantly different between versions?

Is it not possible to use latest software versions with previous
language pack/help pack versions?
