[libreoffice-users] Re: Problems with "Merge" in Draw

2013-01-21 Thread Kai
Hi Tom

thanks for the hint :)

Here you will find the attachments:
map_1.png
map_2.png

map_1 shows the map before merging,
map_2 shows the map after trying to merge the first couple of shapes.

I did use the context menu. I did use "primitive" shapes with regular
fillings.

Here is the file to the problem:

roads.odp

I've been able to reproduce the issue:

Create a circle with a diameter of X (let's say 1cm).
Create a rectangle with a width of 1cm and any height.
Align the bottom centre of the rectangle to the centre of the circle.

Now rotate the rectangle by 60 degrees (120 or 240 work as well) with the
rotation axis being the centre of the circle.
Contextmenu - shape - merge; The result is anything but a proper merge.

Any creative ideas?

Thanks and kind regards,
Kai

/master seems to only contain Windows files every time that I've looked.

You can backup one directory
 http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/
and then go to LO 4
http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/libreoffice-4-0/
There you find the most recent deb & rpms:

etc.

Other than that, I'd suggest asking on the dev list.

Re: [libreoffice-users] is MSFT running scared ...

2013-01-21 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Yes, installing a new Windows alongside an existing one still does over-write
the Mbr and hides all previous versions of Windows as well as any other OSes
you have.  It doesn't matter if the newer version is on a different physical
drive or on an external drive or anything else.

One trick is to physically unplug the drive with the Mbr you want to save and
then install the newer Windows on it's own drive.  it will overwrite the Mbr on
it's drive but will leave the unplugged drive's Mbr alone.  Then when you plug
in the old drive then hopefully you can set the bios to boot the old drive
first.  Of course this means the old drive is unaware of the new install so
you'll need to run something like
sudo update-grub
from you old Gnu&Linux distro.

Regards form
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Where are the nightly builds for Linux?

2013-01-21 Thread Steven P. Ulrick
Hello, Everyone
I hope that this is not too off topic, but I was wondering... Where are the
nightly builds for Linux?

The following three directories are now empty:

This is the last nightly build that I have been able to install:

Version 4.1.0.0.alpha0+ (Build ID: 4a507f732d82c188ad81b022cbe3037951e58ac)
TinderBox: Linux-Fedora17-x86_64@4-gcc-4.7-dbgutil, Branch:master, Time:
2012-12-24_14:04:36

The directory that I downloaded it from is now empty:

Any help you can give me in solving this mystery is greatly appreciated.

Re: [libreoffice-users] is MSFT running scared ...

2013-01-21 Thread webmaster-Kracked_P_P

Maybe you should give the URL for the Linux-based boot repair disk [.iso
file download]. I do not remember it it.

I have two different disk type/names.

"boot-repair-disk.iso" - 355 MB

"ubuntu-secure-remix-12.10-32-bit.iso" - 787 MB
"ubuntu-secure-remix-12.10-64-bit.iso" - 797.1 MB

I think I used the "boot-repair-disk" version since all you had to do
was choose your OS version/type you are using. I think I remember
correctly that there was only 4 buttons to choose from once the disk/OS
booted up.

My Dell laptop had 32-bit Vista even though 64-bit Vista was out and
working. Too cheap maybe to include it, since it cost us more for the
64-bit version back then. I just upgraded that dual boot laptop 64-bit
Win7 professional from 32-bit Vista and 64-bit Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04
version. Win7/pro killed the dual booting till I ran the "repair
disk". I tend to use the Ubuntu boot for the testing of the newest
version of Ubuntu [10.04 to 10.10 to 11.04 to 11.10 to 12.04 to 12.10]
before I upgrade it on my "production desktop". I upgraded the Vista to
Win7/pro [64-bit] so I can have a working 64-bit Windows OS on one of my
systems without going to Win8, since I do not have any touch screens
except on my Android 4.0 tablet.

Actually, I wonder if Win7 or Win8 would break the dual [or triple]
booting a laptop if both boot partitions were running a Windows OS
before one was upgraded from XP or Vista to Win7 or Win8? Would Windows
break the multi-boot if there would be two+ Windows OSs on the same
system but in different boot partitions?

Windows 2000 was for business based on Win NT, while Win Millennium was
for the home user based on Win98. Millennium was worse than Vista ever
was and most users I dealt with switched to Win 2000 till XP [home or
professional] came out.

Win8 look and feel is a reworking of their failed smart phone OS. They
decided that they still liked it and moved it to the Win8 tablet OS.
BUT, someone had the bad idea of wanting all of "your" Windows based
systems to look and "feel" the same. I do not want my "production
desktop" to have the "look and feel" of my tablet. I hated Unity's look
and feel when it came out in the Spring of 2011. Win8 seemed to look
and feel the same. I read that a large number of Ubuntu user switched
to Mint Linux because of Unity. If MS would have looked at the
"fallout" when Ubuntu went to Unity, maybe they would have thought twice
about using a tablet looking OS desktop display for their desktop/laptop
OSs. I kept Ubuntu, but switched to MATE for the desktop environment.

For my opinion what business users in my area will do with new Win8
systems; not buy them if they can get new Win7 systems or downgrade the
new Win8 systems to Win7. Every business user I have talked to locally
hates the look of Win8 and do not want to have to pay for the training
to get their users to be able to use it. XP/Vista to Win7 was a little
change, but XP/Vista/Win7 to Win8 was a real big change that needs a lot
of training. TV ads for retail computer stores use to offer free Win8
training so people could learn how to deal with the big changes. Well,
those TV ads are all gone, along with most of the Win8 ads [number of
ads per day/week] are gone now. Almost all of the MS's tablet are gone
now, but there are some major computer companies [like HP] ads about
tablet to laptop convertibles though replacing MS's "tablet with a
keyboard" ads..

included in the initial release.

Usually there is a requirement to upgrade quite a bit of hardware in
order to run the newer version of Windows and that creates reluctance
until people have had time to save-up or plan for rolling out new
hardware for the new OS.

Installing Windows always installs their boot-loader (used to be
"ntldr") which overwrites the MBR of the hard-drive and then ignores
any other OSes on the machine so that you can only boot into Windows.
To reinstate your MBR just boot into a LIveCd or LiveUsb or some other
way of booting into a Gnu&Linux and just repair or reinstall just the
boot-loader of your distro. You don't need a special recovery or
repair disk although those sorts of things are just one way to boot
into a Gnu&Linux. You also don't need to reinstall the entire distro.
It's just a case of repairing your boot-loader. One of the final
steps of the repair involves 'updating' your boot-loader and if that
is one on a unix-based platform (such as Gnu&Linux, Bsd or whatever)
then it picks up the new version of Windows that your just installed.
Fixing the Mbr is really easy once you have done it once.

2013-01-21 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Are you saying that the problem doesn't happen if you save in Xls or Ods
formats?  If the problem only happens with XlsX format then can you
1.  avoid using that format and try to keep "an original" in either Ods or Xls?
Obviously Ods is the prefered one but if you need to share with MS Office
users then Xls might be needed.
2.  File a bug-report about the XlsX problem

I an not sure I understand what you mean. The only thing in

OK, you mean form. No, you can not open an object of Base (Table,
Query, Form, or Report) without a window border. Your operating system
(probably a version of Windows) places the window border around the
object you open.
Have you checked to see of there is a mailing list like this one

The Ubuntu linux distro supplied version does indeed work.

LibreOffice 3.5.4.
Build ID: 350m1(Build:2)
This product was supplied by The Document Foundation, Debian and Ubuntu.

When unchecked, LO(U) uses the GTK print dialog.

It does not work in the linux LO Versions:
o LibreOffice 3.5.7.2
Build ID: 3215f89-f603614-ab984f2-7348103-1225a5
o 3.6.4.3 (Build ID: 2ef5aff)
o 4.0.0.0.beta2 (Build ID: 4104d660979c57e1160b5135634f732918460a0)
version. (It probable doesn't work in the LODev4 version because there
is no 'Enable experimental (unstable) features'.)

So file a bug report. Or add to an existing one:

[Use LibreOffice dialogs option for print dialog is ignored]
(filed 8 days before you started this thread, so quite recent)

Yes it was/is: Windows Version 3.6.1.1 (Build ID: 4db6344)
However, it doesn't change from the LO print dialog even if
'experimental' is enabled.

Most likely because it didn't do anything (in Windows).

OK, you mean form. No, you can not open an object of Base (Table,
Query, Form, or Report) without a window border. Your operating system
(probably a version of Windows) places the window border around the
object you open.
Have you checked to see of there is a mailing list like this one

Re: [libreoffice-users] is MSFT running scared ...

2013-01-21 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
There is always 'unexpectedly low' take-up of Windows newest OS when it first
gets released.  Historically corporate users have learned to leave it until
after at least the first Service Pack gets released.  One time MS tried to
boost sales by claiming that Service Pack 1 was included in the initial
release.

Usually there is a requirement to upgrade quite a bit of hardware in order to
run the newer version of Windows and that creates reluctance until people have
had time to save-up or plan for rolling out new hardware for the new OS.

Installing Windows always installs their boot-loader (used to be "ntldr") which
overwrites the MBR of the hard-drive and then ignores any other OSes on the
machine so that you can only boot into Windows.  To reinstate your MBR just
boot into a LIveCd or LiveUsb or some other way of booting into a Gnu&Linux and
just repair or reinstall just the boot-loader of your distro.  You don't need a
special recovery or repair disk although those sorts of things are just one way
to boot into a Gnu&Linux.  You also don't need to reinstall the entire distro.
It's just a case of repairing your boot-loader.  One of the final steps of the
repair involves 'updating' your boot-loader and if that is one on a unix-based
platform (such as Gnu&Linux, Bsd or whatever) then it picks up the new version
of Windows that your just installed.  Fixing the Mbr is really easy once you
have done it once.

Typically Windows seem to have 1 bad version followed by 1 good one and then
the next is bad.  Vista was apparently so bad that many people said they
"upgraded" from Vista back to Xp.  Even though that was a backwards step many
considered it an upgrade.  Win7 was quite good.  Before Xp was Millenium which
was generally considered so appalling that people are more likely to have heard
of Win98.  So, people might be expecting Win8 to be another dead OS.

However there is also often quite strong resistance to new things.  Especially
to new versions of Windows.  people have just about become familiar with the
older one and don't like the newer ways of doing things and the fact that it's
difficult to find things or work out how to deal with issues that they had just
learned how to solve on the previous.  With Gnu&Linux it doesn't matter what
changes happen to the DE you can always modify it or even just install the old
one on your new OS.

Tom :)

1. follow the links in this email or
2. from the official LibreOffice website try
"Get Help" - Nabble

[libreoffice-users] #NAME? error in valid formula in xlsx format spreadsheet

2013-01-21 Thread Eric J Owens
TIA!

I have an xlsx format spreadsheet with several formulas:

=PRODUCT(SUM(months("10/21/2012",NOW(),1),months("11/6/2012",NOW(),1)) ,50)

When I close and re-open the spreadsheet, the cell with the formula gives
me the #NAME? error. The first time I saw this and after quite a while
trying to determine what was wrong, I figured out that nothing at all was
wrong with the formula. All it takes for the spreadsheet to do the
calculation is to modify the cell. For example, changing just one of the
"months()" functions to "MONTHS()" and then pressing enter will allow the
cell to calculate the value, even though only one of the months() functions
has been capitalized. In fact, thinking that there might be some option
making the function be case specific, when I first noticed the problem, I
had tried to capitalize the months() function, but when I hit enter, the
upper case was subsequently changed to lower case and the calculation was
performed anyway. When the spreadsheet is saved in ods or xls format, the
formula is calculated as would be expected after a close/re-open and the
months() is upper cased to MONTHS().

Since I know how to fix the error after re-opening, it isn't a big deal,
but it sure would be nice not having to edit all the formulas just to get
my calculations performed. Any idea why closing and re-opening the xlsx
spreadsheet causes the formula to error when there really is no error?
Other than saving in ods or xls format, any idea how to fix the issue?

Thanks!

Perhaps the private suggestion was correct. Perhaps your understanding
of Algebra is not as good as it needs to be. After all this is an Algebra
problem.
   Now for some questions:
1. How much will 1 to 150 units cost? What is the formula to determine this?
2. How much will 151 to 599 units cost you? What is the formula for this?
3. How much will 600 units cost? What is the formula to determine this?
4. How much will 601 or more units cost you? What is the formula for this?
5. What is the cost per unit for any given number of units? What is the formula
for this? (Hint: this is a very simple division problem.)
Hint: I have asked you for 5 formula, and that is also the number of cells you
will need: one cell per formula. You will be using a result in some cells in
the formula in another cell.

My email below indicates the scales used, and please see below for the
calculation of the number of units per pricing bracket obtained, using a
calculator.

What is the main problem is getting Calc to only use a formula up until a max
value before moving onto the next formula.

Assuming I purchased R2000 of the unit(electricity). As per the scale I would
get 150 units at R1.29 which would equate to R193.50, which leaves a further
R1806.50 that was used to buy electricity, but at different rate per unit.

Taking the remaining R value and dividing it by 1.35(being the next value in
the sliding scale) provides an answer of 1338.1 units. Only 450 units are
allowed to be purchased at this price however, so 450*1.35=R607.50.

So all in all we have only spent 193.50 and 607.50 = R801.00 out of R2000.

Therefore the remaining R1199.00 divided by 1.60(being the next value in the
sliding scale) = 749.38 units.

Therefore our R2000 purchased 150+450+749.38=1349.38 units.

I trust the above better explains what I need Calc to do. Perhaps it is not
possible, but I challenge you all to solve this one.

As I mentioned in my answer to Tom, if you use an external version of
hsqldb, it can only be the same version number as the internal version
provided with LO, else the old ODB files can no longer be opened. In
other words, you can not install an external hsqldb jar and expect your
old ODB(hsqldb) files to keep working, as this will throw an error.

So yes, it still remains a possibility, but one that you may want to
avoid if you still have old ODB files that use the internal hsqldb with
an older revision number than the externa jar you plug into LO.

It has nothing to do with a connector, I was referring to your question
re the possibility of substituting internal hsqldb for an external one.
This is discussed in the Base user guide, I believe, but it no longer
works, if you want to use a different version of hsqldb than the one
that LO uses internally. Anway, this is off topic with regard to the
initial question.

Isn't hsqldb *still* a (relatively) good choice, as long as it is installed and
used *external* to Base? That does of course mean it's still not the "default"
setting.

Remenber that this list doesn't support attached files.

About the issue, try selecting Shapes > Merge from contextual menu. I've
just got a merged shape using LO 4.0.0 RC1.

And finally, use TDF binaries from libreoffice.org/download

[libreoffice-users] Problems with "Merge" in Draw

2013-01-21 Thread Kai Bettzieche
Dear all,

I'm experiencing a problem with Draw's function "merge":

As you can see in attachment #1 (map_1.png), I'm trying to build a map (yeah,
not exactly, what Draw is there for ..)
Now I'd like to merge the "roads" (the long grey boxes) with the "corners" (the
grey circles).

Result: see attachment #2 (map_2.png) - even though I definetly pressed
"merge", the shapes do not get merged at all.

The issue is reproducable:

Create a circle with width=1cm and height 1cm.
Create a rectangle with width=1cm and any height.
Align the bottom centre of the rectanlge with the centre of the circle.
Now rotate the rectangle by 60 degree (120 work as well), rotating point is the
bottom centre of the rectangle.
Now merge: The result shows anything but a merge.

Tested with:
Libre Office for PortableApps.com on Win7 as well as Libre Office on Ubuntu
(current versions each of them)

Could you advise, please, and tell me what to do, to get those shapes merged
properly?

Thank you and kind regards,
Kai

p.s. attached you can find the odp file, too - just in case ..

hi brian,

thank u for the "re-saved" copies, but they did not work with
LIBREOFFICE 3.5.7.2, too.

no way to open them, LIBREOFFICE still asking for ASCII filter and
then freeze.

i have to be able to start this *.ppt from the cd, because the
complete cd have to be presented via projector to a crowd, so the idea
with "reburning" was good, but the files do not work.

i now uninstalled LIBREOFFICE 3.5.7.2 and installed LIBREOFFICE

Re: [libreoffice-users] PPA for 4.0rc1?

2013-01-21 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I don't know if the PPAs are still being maintained now that LibreOffice is in
the main official repos for Ubuntu (and most other distros now).  If you want
to access different versions of LibreOffice then on the downloads page is an
innocuous-looking sentence saying something like "to change system or
language".  The sentence itself is clickable and gives you tons of choices of
different versions of LO.  After choosing which languae it then gives a choice
of 4 different versions of LibreOffice.

http://hsqldb.org/web/hsqlFAQ.html

Unfortunately HSqlDb is currently written in Java and Java has been
deteriorating badly over the last 2 years so it might be better to find a
different back-end.  Apparently Postgresql, MySql/MariaDb are good fairly large
scale back-ends but they might be a lot heftier than you really need.  I'm
still trying to find a good one for smaller amounts of data, such as one for a
reasonable address-book.

You might find that increasing a lot of the memory/Ram options might reduce
crashes.

Tools - Options - Memory
Most of the defaults are set very low because OOo and LO have typically been
used on very low spec machines.  Now as people are using them on heftier
machines a lot of those could be bumped up significantly or even doubled or
more.

Ii was wondering if other programs also crash.  If so then it might be a wobbly
graphics card and pushing it in firmly can help.  Also every year or so my home
machine starts crashing because of dust build-up inside the case.  Hoovering it
carefully, especially the cpu's heat-sink, solves it.  Of course one of the
dangers is getting rid of static from the hoover's plastic noozle.  Swiftly
moving air rubbing over plasitc is a great way to build-up static and any
movement over carpets is another good way.  Even the tiny static charge
naturally occuring on skin is enough to fry some components so it's tricky to
be careful enough.  So, soemtimes i just blow the dust out of the ehat-sink but
it's a weird choking dust so i keep a glass of milk or mango juice nearby in
case i breathe the dust in.  Water or wine tend to be tooo dry.

Tom :)

I can only think of a workaround :

Open a writer document, type your phrase and insert the date into it
from the Field menu. Then right mouse button click on the date and
change the format, which means you'll probably have to create a
User-defined format, e.g. which you then save. Now, select your
sentence from your Writer document, and copy/paste it into your ODP
document. This will create a textbox (in fact it is a Writer object)
with the phrase in it, which you can then fiddle around with to get
it

positioned how you want on your sheet.

My own personal advice would be not to use the autorecovery feature for
ODB files. What this feature does is save what is in the volatile memory
of the application at a given moment. This would be all well and good,
BUT, and this is the killer : an ODB file does not load all data from
the tables, reports, queries, etc into LO's volatile memory, only parts
of that data (crap design, I know, but it was done initially for
performance reasons). This means that if you get a crash, only a part of
your whole ODB file data is actually saved to a temporary file, which is
then used during the autorecovery process. The fact that you have not
lost more data/queries/reports is pure luck so far.

Instability of Base ODB files when opened within the LO application in
general is one reason (apart from dependence on Java) why there is a
search on for a replacement backend that would allow for more robust
binary streaming. In the end, it may turn out that the ODB file, as with
other db backends, e.g. server backends like mysql and postgres, will
become just a container for forms, queries and reports, and the actual
data will be held in a separate file. This should actually make the data
handling more robust, but performance might become an issue (not that
current hsqldb/ODB performance is stellar, coz it isn't). Someone was
looking at the possibility of using firebird. For the moment, however,
nothing has been decided or actually undertaken as far as I know.

If you really need to rely on your data keeping its coherency and
consistency, my advice would be not to use the default hsqldb/ODB pair
that is provided as the default. It is a shame really, as hsqldb in
itself, certainly in its 2.0 version, is a capable db engine. It is just
the integration with AOO/LO that is one of the root causes of many of
the problems that users experience.

A form is a ODF document. There are probably ways to hide the toolbars
by messing with the XCU configuration files of ODB file used to contain
your forms, queries, etc, or even with the general XCU files of
LibreOffice, but then you might mess up much more than just your form.
You may also be able to set the size of your form (dimensions x,y) via
the Form Properties.

Seems to me that a dialog box might be a better alternative for what you
want, but that would require you to mess around with the LO Basic IDE
editor.

I an not sure I understand what you mean. The only thing in Base
that has a mask that I know is a pattern field. It has two of them: an
edit mask and a literal mask. The properties for this field are listed
in the Control tool when the pattern field is highlighted.
Are you talking about a field in a form? Is it a pattern field?
Do you want to make the mask in the pattern field smaller but not the
pattern field? If this is true, what you really want to do is to
change the size of the font for this field. Click the field while
holding down the Control button. This highlights the field but not its
label. Then right click the field and select Control from the pop up
window. Scroll down through the properties until you find the Font
property. Click the ellipse (...) for the Font property to open the
Character dialog. Reduce the size of the text, and click OK.
If this is not what you want, will you please be more specific
about what you have and what you want to do.
