Think I found it :

F3 gives an error; ctrl F3 doesn't.

The error behind F3 should be taken care of.

I think we know this! I trust you don't think this is a bug. If you
fail to enter any shortcut but then invoke AutoText by pressing F3,
you will indeed be told that there is no AutoText entry for a null
shortcut. That's correct and helpful.

The original questioner needed to enter "fn" and *then* press
F3. That should achieve what he needs. He was having difficulty with that.

That's because they do different things.

o F3 is "Run AutoText Entry": it takes the characters you have just
typed as a shortcut and expands them according to AutoText.

o Ctrl+F3 is "AutoText": it opens the AutoText dialogue, which enable
you to do much more. You can even invoke AutoText entries that way,
but it is a long-winded way of doing so!

The error behind F3 should be taken care of.

There is no error that most of us can see.

That is a considerable PITA, i.e. having two versions of LO just so you
can run two different versions of hsqldb. From that perspective alone,
H2 is a much better choice. However, the hsqldb version mismatch problem
will soon hopefully be moot, as Fred Toussi (the hsqldb developer guy)
is currently working on resolving these problems with an upcoming
version 2.30 of hsqldb.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Base Report Builder

2013-01-30 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think Dan is describing how to migrate tables out of the embedded back-end
and then the next (hopefully last) stepping stone gets the tables into the
latest version of HsqlDb.  Yes a pain but only a temporary one for most people
making such a move.

I'm not sure about H2 beign such a great alternative.  Better and clearer
documentation is a big plus but even so it is still based on Java so presumably
as Java continues to fall apart under the 'new' owners (Oracle) it's just going
to keep on being a problem.  Is it at all likely that either one will re-code
their back-ends to C# or C++ (same thing as each other or different?) or Python
or Qt (?) or anything else that Is also cross-platform but less troublesome?

I have heard that corporates love to have their valuable data in java based
backends but is there something safer that is still good for smaller amounts of
data?  Errr, i guess i should ask that as a separate question, sorry.

Tom :)

That's because corporations are intrinsicly dysfunctional organisations
that promote opportunist egomaniacs who have no competence in any other
field than careerism into those positions where they can cause the
maximum damage to the entity.

FOSS projects shouldn't try to mimic corporate pathologies.

There's no (FOSS) RDBMS that beats PostgreSQL. And LO has a native
driver for it.

Dear Brian,

I do not have the restricted keyboard that you mentioned. There is no "fn"

Yes, ctrl + F3 produces the desired result.

Then something strange is happening for you that doesn't generally.

I'm running out of ideas. Here's another couple of things to try:

o Open the AutoText dialogue (e.g. by pressing Ctrl+F3 as has been discussed).
o Expand the Standard group.
o Does "Formula Numbering" appear in the list (as it should)?
o If you select it, does "FN" appear in the Shortcut box (as it should)?
o If not, someone has customised your set-up and upset the facility.

o At the top of the AutoText dialogue, ensure "Display remainder of
name as suggestion while typing".

o Close the AutoText dialogue.
o In the text (Writer) document, type "For".
o Does a small note window saying "Formula Numbering" appear?
o Whilst the small window is displayed, press Enter.
o Does the dummy numbered equation now appear?

Good-oh!

The second suggestion is an effective workaround for you, then:
typing F, o, r, Enter is hardly any longer than f, n, F3 would have been.

[libreoffice-users] How good is Impress compared to PowerPoint?

2013-01-30 Thread Gilles
Hello

Before possibly recommending LibreOffice to a friend who needs an office
suite for her personal use, I need to know how good its Impress component
is compared to PowerPoint.

She won't need to create very sophisticated slides, and won't need to import
PowerPoint files. It's just to create some presentations for her class. She
has regular office skills, she's not a geek.

If you have extensive experience with both PowerPoint and Impress, would you
say Impress is good enough or still lacking?

Here's a review:
"Admittedly, PowerPoint still outperforms Impress, yet not by such an extent
that the difference couldn't be overcome in a release or two. In fact, the
lack of improvements in Impress over the last few years -- particularly in
its audio capabilities -- suggests that for most users the deficiencies are
unimportant."

Thank you.

Impress can do an excellent job. If you want to help your friend, it
is good to teach on how to prepare a presentation, how to break down
the information so that they are put on slides. This is something
people are not being taught and end up with those boring Powerpoints.

With Impress, if you set up the projector to be an extended display
(to your laptop), then you can view the current slide on the
projector, and on the laptop it will show you the current slide + the
next slide. Also can show the time.

Thanks. She's already used to PowerPoint. Is Impress familiar enough, and
does it have the main features that average PowerPoint users need?

Re: [libreoffice-users] How good is Impress compared to PowerPoint?

2013-01-30 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
PowerPoint is slightly in the lead imo (and from posts on the lists) but only
by about £10-£20 worth.  Impress is developing faster so that slight edge may
not last for long.  There are shed loads of other programs for producing
slideshows and many are free
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presentation_software

The basic concept is flawed.  Like playing a video it tends to put quite a lot
of the audience to sleep or into zombie-like, tele-watching mode.
Bullet-pointed assertions at best just serve to stop people thinking hard about
the subject and neatly avoid any of the detail, "the devil is in the detail".
Apparently the military like them for press briefings because it's style over
content so it helps them minimise how much they tell.  On the other hand it
seems many dislike them in mission briefings because they obscure the depth of
information required for success.

Flip charts are more effective at engaging the audience and getting them
thinking.  Interactive.

If you have a good presentation on Impress/PowerPoint/whatever then why would
it need you?  Just upload it to YouTube.

At events i tend to have a slideshow going on in the background in the lobby or
in the bar.  Sometimes parts of it catch people's attention enough to help
boost their conversation, or to distract them from going tooo far off-topic.
But i don't use anything fancy, just a normal photo-viewer.
Regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: How good is Impress compared to PowerPoint?

2013-01-30 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
+1

I think the important thing to remember is not that Impress is cheaper but
that it is priceless.  It's part of an exciting world-wide movement towards
greater intellectual freedom, creativity and the drive towards success.  It's a
merging of the professionalism of corporate in-house systems of many companies
around the world with the passion and dedication of freedom fighters
volunteering for their cause.

By contrast with PowerPoint she might be able to avoid putting the audience to
sleep if she is really good and puts enough work in and knows what she is doing
and when to switch the machine off.

Regards from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Implementing LO in schools/business

2013-01-30 Thread timllloyd
Hi I asked this question via nabble to a marketing group (?) but it must have
got lost. Interested in any feedback.

Is there a "how to" which explains to potential users "how to" procure and
maintain LO? My example would be a small company - installation is simple
(and free), how do you migrate existing MSO docs? What kind
of support is available? What kind of issues will affect staff migrating to
the new product?

Basically, if I was the IT person in a small company (which I am not
incidentally), what kind of help is available when preparing a business
case?

Cheers

Tom, yes that is something to get my teeth into. I have always been quite
keen to promote LO (or any other free software - it is FREE for crying out
loud) but I have never had anything with which to backup my thoughts.

Normally when you mention LO/Linuxyou normally get blank expressions or
downright hostility. It is worth having a reference point.

Many thanks

Re: [libreoffice-users] How good is Impress compared to PowerPoint?

2013-01-30 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Have you checked your glasses for roses?  That is about the first time i have
heard anyone saying they thought Impress is actually better in terms of
functionality.  Especially going back a few years.

I thought a lot of progress had been made over the last year and this new
remote-control feature if it's on Gnu&Linux and you are using an Android all
sounds intriguing.
Regards from
Tom :)

Then something strange is happening for you that doesn't generally.

I'm running out of ideas. Here's another couple of things to try:

o Open the AutoText dialogue (e.g. by pressing Ctrl+F3 as has been
discussed).
o Expand the Standard group.
o Does "Formula Numbering" appear in the list (as it should)?
o If you select it, does "FN" appear in the Shortcut box (as it should)?
o If not, someone has customised your set-up and upset the facility.

o At the top of the AutoText dialogue, ensure "Display remainder of name
as suggestion while typing".
o Close the AutoText dialogue.
o In the text (Writer) document, type "For".
o Does a small note window saying "Formula Numbering" appear?
o Whilst the small window is displayed, press Enter.
o Does the dummy numbered equation now appear?

Dear Brian,

I did all you said above, and I got all the results.

Sincerely,

Taang Zomi

To All:

What I found on my LibreOffice 3.5.5.2 (vista): lower case fn did not
work(error like OP), upper case FN does work. In calling up the
autotext dialog, then selecting 'formula numbering', the displayed
shortcut was FN (both uppercase).
