A "full stop" is the same as a "period" or a "dot".

Quote from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_stop

"A full stop (British English, Hiberno-English, Australian English,
Indian English, South African English, Sri Lankan English and New
Zealand English) or period (American English and Canadian English) is
the punctuation mark placed to indicate the end of sentences. In the
context of web addresses and computing in general, it is typically
called a dot."

Been having the problem for a long time. Using Calc, I write a date,
Oct 23rd, (I add the rd which shows as a superscript. Problem is
whenever I add new text to the cell, it is in the superscript size, not
regular text.

I took the list's advise of turning off the superscript function. If
enough people are aggravated by the anomaly, it will be adjusted.

Thanks,
John

Just for the record, it is not necessary to follow John's more extreme
solution.

For recent versions of LO (eg. 4.1.2.3) placing a full stop/period/dot
or comma immediately after the superscript rd reverts any following text
to normal size.

Dave

I understand the "period/dot or comma", but what is a "full stop"?

[libreoffice-users] Re: Installing LibreOffice Updates In Linux

2013-10-14 Thread Help_Please
Thanks for the reply.

I believe that I will still continue to manually remove LibreOffice then,
install the new version.

I did use the "purge" in the past installs. Maybe the next install I will
fore go using the "purge" option.

No, I'm not referring to digest mode.

I am referring to "nomail" mode, and then retrieving specific
messages by using .

The problem: there is no way to know the desired correct "N" for
someone subscribed by
so to be able to retrieve it.

There are several ways to _read_ messages. There is no effective way
to _retrieve_ a specific message (since the correct "N" is unknown to
a "nomail" subscribed user).

To the Admin(s) of the ML,
 any answer to this question?

TIA,
Ady.

Not sure if it's the same one, but I've found this handy for finding
Unicode characters:
 http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/

It doesn't show the whole range in one table, as that would be quite
some table, but you can view a whole block at once. Not all fonts
contain all Unicode characters, so you may find that some of the more
esoteric characters don't display properly or at all.

That's not the page I was writing about, but I've bookmarked it. Thanks.

I found the page I was looking for, http://unicode.org/charts/. That
page made me realize I've got to learn more about today's font files.
If you check one of there fonts, say this one,
http://unicode.org/charts/PDF/U.pdf, that's the type of simple chart
I'm looking for, except for one missing item. For character 0002 which
is the space, I'd like the word "space" to be associated with the
character in the chart. That tells me what the character is called in
plain English, i.e. "space", "em square", "decimal sign", etc. Then it
should be easier to check the font I wish to use to see if it contains
the extended characters/ligatures/etc. I need/want to use.

I used to really be into typography, but it was in the ASCII days,
around the Windows for Workgroups time.

[libreoffice-users] Win XP Windows Installer Error - what was he fix again?

2013-10-14 Thread Kracked_P_P---webmaster

It has been a bit, so I do not remember what the fix is. . .

I have Win XP Pro SP3 system that gives me the Windows Installer error
telling me that something is wrong with the Windows Installer, when I
try and install LO 4.0.5 for Windows.

I know that there is some fix out there.

So could someone tell me what that fix was?
I need to get LO installed on that system.

It is a 3+ GHz dual core desktop with 2 GB of Ram and more than enough
drive space.

I just installed XP Professional SP2 and then installed SP3 and over 120
XP updates.

But it seems that I may need to see if there is a newer Windows
Installer package or some other fix.

BUT, MS's web site really does not let you find what you really need for
XP systems easily. I could not find, online, a copy of SP3 so I could
get the updates, then I remembered I had it on a CD in a drawer. So
having to wade through their XP-unfriendly site to try to find a new
installer would be really hard or impossible.

SO
does anyone remember the fix for this Installer error?
anyone know of the like to better XP version of one?

I do not want to have to put MSO 2003 onto that system.

I don't know of an exact solution that would allow you to both specify a

kind of
character maps to display characters using a specific font. For
example on
windows, you can run the "charmap" program. I don't remember the name,

Make money LOL, I'm on a roll here.

On the serious side... If you look at the ASCII table link, you can see
that it's easy to scan the char column until you find "space" for
instance, then know the Dec code is32.

I just want to do similar for all the characters in a contemporary font.
Then I know the "code" to use for that extended character. I found a
website, which sadly I can't find now, even with History in the browser,
that had a plethora of charts. Thought I'd bookmarked it, but also
apparently not. :-(

In another thread, I think here in LO, there was essentially a
typography discussion. Two spaces after a period, or one? In that
thread, I suggested trying the AutoCorrect function to get what you
want. Now I'm going to try my own suggestion! LOL So, I need to know
where the em space is, and then see if I can enter that into AutoCorrect.

Using the search on the above site, searching for "em space" shows that
it's U+2003 (that's unicode character 2003 in hex, or 8195 decimal)

One of the things that's making what you want more difficult to find is
unicode. Unicode supports many thousands of characters, so it's a large
table. You can search on unicode to find the tables. However, you may
be going about this the wrong way. Is there a specific set of
characters, such as for another language? If so, you can enable other
keyboard layouts and switch among them. For example, I have
International English enabled so that I can get a variety of symbols and
also the Greek layout for characters that are commonly used in
electronics. I just press to switch.

I know it's going to be more complicated, but I'm thinking more of just
English for typography purposes, general writing and not technical writing.

An explanation is here:

news://news.gmane.org:119/l3hgnv$s2q$1...@ger.gmane.org

A different keyboard layout is something that hadn't occurred to me. I
may have to check that out later.

In addition, I can hopefully substitute ligatures for specific letter

but apparently it only works with "Graphite" fonts, something I need to
find and find out about.

Hopefully, I can get something acceptable using AutoCorrect.

I'm also going to start looking at LyX/LaTeX for better typographical
output. If you look at really old books, you can see the difference
between the text in them and what you generally get with a word processor.

I know that LO has a font charting display for "insert special
character" that look good.

I've yet to find of these that I find truly easy to use. And, maybe
it's not possible.

If you want to print a character chart for a selected font, well most
font managers I have seen does that to some degree.

As for the KDE option - KFontView
I also use Fontmatrix on Ubuntu.

I use a paid software on Windows to get what I want though - MainType.

In the Mac OS X Tiger days, Adobe created a 32(?) page document on using
the Mac's character chart, and that chart has always baffled me. Most
due to lack of knowledge on my part I'm sure, and there's really nothing
in the help files for OS X about it. :-(

My hunch is the character chart is totally useless to the newbie. :-(

Not that I know of, you can even store them on remote storage before you
install them. The Extensions Manager doesn't seem to be particularly
picky as long as the Finder can reach them.

Thanks to Tinkerer, I found the folder it goes in. Too bad it's not
easily accessible to the Finder. :-(

I say this because I thought I read in a help file somewhere all you had
to do was place the extension in that folder and restart LO. Which
didn't work. LOL So, went to find said help file, now I can't. That's
not good.

The help file for installing extensions doesn't mention storage
locations at all. And it doesn't mention anything about downloading
from the web, except for a short blurb about repositories, which I
presume applies only to Linux.

Most of my extensions go into the Download folder by default. If I want
to install them, I open up the Extension Manager from within LO, and
navigate to the Download folder.

I don't follow today's norm for data/file storage on my computers. Both
this Mac and all the Windows machines I own, I create that storage
somewhere else other than the OS partition.

Even MS, with Win7, has admitted their design isn't always a good idea.

Extensions can also be installed from the command line with the unopkg
binary.

I try to stay as far away form command lines as I can now. It's 2013,
not 1983, you should not need to use a command line to accomplish a task.

Oh, yea, and there's no connection to LO's extensions page from the
extensions manager. And the information on the extensions page is out
of date.

The connection to the Extensions site seems to work for me. If I click
on the link at the bottom of the Extensions Manager window, I get taken
to the Extensions and Templates home page on OSX 10.8.5 with LO 4. If I
click on the little icon at the bottom of the startcenter, I also get
taken to the corresponding general home page.

I missed that earlier. They just *had* to make it small text, they
couldn't have made it a button Developers and web site designers
have forgotten how to design for total newbies, which is how I look at
all software, web sites, and OS interfaces. As if today, humans are not
born with the computer knowledge and skills many developers and web site
designers seem to take for granted all users have.

I think a better design, and more consistent design of the Extension
Manager UI would be to put the Remove button with the Add button. :-)

Which version of LO on Mac are you using ?

Uhhh, it's in my sig???But your question did make me
realize the LO part needed updating, and below is current.

I do not know if it is still needed for going from 4.1.2 to 4.1.3, but
it should be done for things like 4.0.5 to 4.1.2.

There may be issues with "launch menus" and other parts of the setup
that could be negatively affected by not uninstalling LO before the new
version is installed.

What I do is always uninstall first, just to be safe.

Of course, if you are getting your install from the OS repository, then
they do the work for you.

I use the following command
sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*

if you use "purge" it will remove all of the config files, but you may
not want to do that.

CIO in a company and lately we are about to install zero clients in the
company. Therefore, we need to install the office package in the server to
be shared by all. I have the Microsoft price for the license (up to 500
users, we will start with 200 terminal) but I want your offer (which I
prefer to install and though I will install Linux in the server instead of
Windows which I don't use since 1997).

It was possible to install the original StarOffice so that users could
run it from a server, rather than their own computers, but it's been
years since I've looked at that. It involved installing a small
interface portion on the users computer. However, since there are no
licence fees, is it necessary to do that type of install.

I've actually been meaning to look into this, because I remember reading
about that very thing.

The obvious benefit (mainly thinking about Windows networks) would be
you only have to install and/or update the application once, then the
local interface/user settings portion would (or should) automatically
update itself when the main program is updated.

This would be incredibly useful - even better than pushing software
updates out over some App Management platform/tool.

Just like right now, I have certain 'portable apps' installed to a
network share - ie, FoxitReader, CCleaner - that everyone uses. Once
they are 'integrated' into the users environment (ie, launch CCleaner on
a users computer, go to Options > Settings, and check 'Add 'Run
CCleaner...' and 'Add 'Open CCleaner...'...' options...

From that time on, all I have to do is drag the new portable version to
the shared location, and everyone immediately sees/uses the new version
- same for FoxitReader (although I can only replace the old version when
no one has the current version open)...

Sometimes such documents contain forms that are read-only; content can
be added but the form cannot be edited. If it is required to edit the
form (e.g. a table is mis-aligned), below are some example actions.

Save the document to the local disk
In the command terminal

libreoffice -invisible -convert-to fodt m$documentname.doc

Use a text editor to open the fodt file (m$documentname.fodt), search
for the element 'ProtectForm' and change the attribute 'type' from
"true" to "false". Save the file

In the command terminal
libreoffice -invisible -convert-to odt m$documentname.fodt

The last command is optional; converting to odt will be recognised by
non-LO software such as m$ word, otherwise use LO to export the
document to PDF if necessary.

Re: [libreoffice-users] [CALC] row_only and column_only cell references

The problem with this setting is that there is no explanation of what
it really means / implies (other than "=$Sheet2.C4" vs.
"=Sheet2!C4").

The difference between "R1C1" and "A1" is likely clear enough for
anyone that might want / need to use it. But what are the differences
between "Calc A1" and "Excel A1"? Are "row_only" references accepted
when setting it to "Excel A1"?

Even if I try and test the possible difference regarding "1:1" and
"A:A" references, I don't know what else could change. Without
documentation, I can't know of pros and cons, or compatibility or any
other implications of this particular setting.

FWIW, I should point out that Excel is no the only one accepting this
type of reference.

I'm not saying that Calc should promote "bad practices" or anything
like it. I'm not saying that using row_only references is better in
any way. I am not promoting its use.

But when receiving a file from other sources and it errors, it is not
always easy to track down the problem or the incompatibility. And
even then, it is not always possible for one user to edit and share
the file with others.

Additionally, if a user of Calc searches for some method or formula
to achieve something he doesn't know how to do it by himself, it is
common to find such solution expressed in the context of other
spreadsheet software (typically, Excel).

>From a final user's perspective, I don't see a reason not to support
it. Of course there might be technical / development reasons, but
this is a *users* mailing list :).

So, I left with several questions here. Hopefully, someone has some
answer(s) or can point into the right direction?

TIA,
Ady.

Quoting from "CG4107-FormulasAndFunctions.pdf" :
"Calc can not reference a whole column of unspecified length using
A:A or a whole row using 1:1
which you might be familiar with in other spreadsheet programs."

This piece of info was not so easy to find. Since other spreadsheet
software (in fact, more than one) indeed supports "A:A: and "1:1"
references, I thought that either Calc would support it too, or at
least would be easier to find that it doesn't.

For example, using Calc to open some xls file with such type of
references would end up with errors. The xls file itself would open,
but there would be no hint about the reason for the "#ref" or "#name"
errors (among the possible errors that this type of cell reference
would end up with).

Regarding a workaround, once the user finds out that the problem is
in the type of reference (which is not always evident), then by
adding some column (or some row) to the reference would probably
avoid the error. Other methods (e.g offset, range names) would be
more close to the original range (complete row / column). This
workaround is of course not always available, specially when
receiving a spreadsheet file from someone else (originally prepared
and saved with other programs).

I am still wondering if some setting in Calc would (or should) allow
for this type of cell reference. For example, by using "Excel A1"
instead of "Calc A1" in Calc -> Tools -> Options -> LibreOffice Calc
-> Formula -> Formula syntax.

There are many different settings that might influence the accepted
behavior, and I really don't know / understand the effect of each one
(I didn't find any explanation of what each setting really means), so
instead of "playing" with each possible combination, I decided to ask
here in the ML (and not all of those settings are located in the same
place).

If this type of cell reference is _completely_ unsupported, perhaps
it should be mentioned in the help files (?). I would agree that
referencing complete columns or complete rows should be rarely used,
and discouraged, but perhaps supporting a formula that already uses
it (specially when using or receiving files originally saved with
other file formats) is not such a crazy idea.

So, is there any combination of settings that would help in this type
of cases?

[off-topic]
BTW, if I may... Having separated mailing lists according to the
program (Writer / Calc / Impress / ...) might be more adequate for
users, specially since other methods of communication with
LibreOffice / TDF are not really
effectively working.
[/off-topic]

TIA,
Ady.

[libreoffice-users] MySQL Native C Connector Extension for Linux 32, 64 and OSX 64 bit versions of LibreOffice - built against future LO 4.2

2013-10-14 Thread Alexander Thurgood
Just a heads up to let you all know that you know that if you :

- can get your hands on a 64bit daily build of LO for OSX (this doesn't
seem available anywhere I can find at the moment);

- or a 32bit or 64bit Linux daily build ;

you might want to try the mysql native C connector extensions I have
managed to build from the current master repo, and which are available
here :

http://sourceforge.net/projects/lomysqlconnectorextension/

Note that the Linux versions were built on Ubuntu/Debian based systems.

These extensions may or may not work with current 4.1.x versions of
LibreOffice, I haven't tested them so wouldn't know.

I have not built for Windows, as I have no build machine for that and
learning to cross-compile for that particular OS does not yet represent
an itch I'm dying to scratch. I believe Jésus Corrius is preparing new
Windows-built connector extensions which should be made available via
the LO extensions website.

[libreoffice-users] Problems with curly quotes inside words in Hunspell + incorrect words in LibreOffice's English Hunspell spell checker .dic file

2013-10-14 Thread michaelbeijer
I am having some problems finding a Hunspell spell checker that can handle
smart (or curly) quotes in words such as wouldn’t, couldn’t, etc.

I noticed that many Hunspell spell checkers don’t work properly with them,
so I investigated a bit and found that the ICONV command can be used in the
.aff file to make this possible. The ‘LibreOffice American British Canadian
- spelling/hyphen/thesaurus dictionaries’ (available here:
http://extensions.libreoffice.org/extension-center/american-british-canadian-spelling-hyphen-thesaurus-dictionaries/releases/3.0)
makes use of the ICONV command, and seems to work with curly quote sin
words. However, I also noticed that the list contains a lot of incorrect
words, such as ‘wouldn’, and ‘couldn’.

Who should I ask this question to? Is anyone here in charge of these
dictionaries?

Michael

PS: We are currently discussing the topic of using curly quote in Hunspell
in the CafeTran (a CAT tool) mailing list, here:
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/cafetranslators/KxSEd23J77Y
