[libreoffice-users] BASE refuse TIMESTAMPDIFF syntax

2013-11-19 Thread polch
Hi.

I would like to build an SQL request that use TIMESTAMPDIFF. As i encounter
some problems of rejected syntax i try a minimal example in sql editor :

SELECT TIMESTAMPDIFF(MONTH,'2003-02-01','2003-05-01')

But either with this example, the sql editor doesn't want to save the
request neither execute it.

I'm running ooo version 4.0.1.2 on linux.

Do you think it comes from a misuse ?

Regards.

Paul.

LO is not an m$ clone. Use the native file formats. Create odp format

provide vlc, mplayer or similar software to play music files which
should be in oga format.

This slide show is for distribution to others via DVD, and I'm really
getting frustrated with it. I'd hate to think that the hours I've spent
on it have been wasted and that I have to start over with another
application. But I can't assume anything about the software anyone else
has, and just about everyone has the ability to view a .pps file
regardless of their OS (I can be pretty sure, but not 100% positive,
that everyone on my distribution list is using either Windows or Mac
machines). Can anyone see anything I've overlooked?

Alternatives exists, such as htmlslidy and prezi. It the slide show is
seemingly of multimedia, could also use html5 and smil, delivering the
presentation via a web browser (depending on smil use, in which case a
smil player may be required as well).

2013-11-19 Thread Milos Sramek

Hi,

I in fact do not have any problems with downloading LO: I just click on
the big green button on http://www.libreoffice.org/download
(the topmost one from three similar buttons, the rest are for
localizations - in case others do not see them).
A new page (donate.libreoffice.ord...) opens and after 2-3 seconds the
download starts. I do not have to bother about donations.

Perhaps the fact that the donate page opens right after clicking on the
download button and the download starts a bit later (at least a bit for
me, perhaps a lot later for others) is the confusing moment, since one
expects something related to download and not to donations. Do you see
that so? I can imagine it is. Donations are important, but, perhaps, it
should be done in a less 'invasive' way. Maybe a visible 'Donate' button
on the download page which would redirect the used to the donate page.
This would not mix downloads with donations and thus would not make user
angry. Or, two download buttons: one plain Download and the second
Download and donate - which would do the same thing as Download does
now.

best
Milos

will notice their own web-browser is the only thing blocking the

The marketing team did discuss this and various other options but the

settled on doing the same as other projects, such as Ubuntu and many
others.

It's irritating as hell. It makes LO look as if a donation is required
(even though it says otherwise) and IMO is a bit of an embarrassment
when referring LO to others. Several have commented were sure to
mention that AOO doesn't require this nonsense.

I just spent 10 minutes figuring out how to bypass this nonsense in
order to download a 205MB update for a remote user at limited
bandwidth. The default download link was downloading at 45Kbps...
Finally remembered the mirrors:
http://download.documentfoundation.org/mirmon/allmirrors.html and only
then was I actually able to get a reasonably speed download connection.

Is this a known bug ? Is there any workaround ?

Re: [libreoffice-users] CALC convert text to numbers

Or if I know they are text (but there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY TO SEE
  THAT IN LO)
How would you see it in Excel? I recall the display in Excel being
the same as in LO. The only difference between digits that are text
and digits that are numbers is in the justification.
In Excel you can look at the formatting and if the formatting is as
text you can change it and the numbers are now considered numbers not
text. You do have to look at the cell format but once you do it's
obvious as either text or numbers.
Well in LO you can't change the data type just by changing the
formatting, but you should be able to see it! If you go to the format
of a cell, and the format is text, then the values in the cell are
text, but if the format is number, then the values are either numbers,
or text, in which case they will be preceeded by an apostrophe in the
input line. Although you say this isn't the case for you, this is how
it *should* work.

All the discussions about the leading apostrophe are great but I
still can't see it in LO nor can I remove it.
Cell by cell you can remove it, which is just the same as I remember
Excel working. You can see it, and remove it, in the input line per
cell. You can't see it in the actual cells, but you can't in Excel
  either, as I recall.
Actually you can't see it in LO at all, in the input line or
anywhere. At least not on my machine, a mac. I've just re-verified
this for the umptenth time. I'm attaching a bit of a screen grab that
shows the input line in LO of a file where the cell I am looking at
is actually text. No apostrophe showing at all, no obvious way to
tell the thing is actually text and no way to change it easily.
As far as I can see from your screengrab, the number is left-aligned,
meaning it is text. In that case it won't show an apostrophe, because
the value is text in a cell formatted as text. It only shows an
apostrophe if the value is text in a cell formatted as a number,
because there is no need to mark text as text if it is in a cell
formatted as text. This is (as I recall from some years ago) the same
as Excel, I think.

I wasn't able to get the text to columns to work on my spreadsheets
so gave up on it. I haven't tried it again to see if it works. I'm
also trying to get the extension mentioned a while back installed and
 running too.
I haven't used that extension personaly, so I can't talk about that, but
the Text to Columns really should work. For me, I just select some
cells that have values that are text, but I want as numbers, then I
select Text to Columns from the Data menu, and click Ok in the
dialog that pops up. No need to do anything more.

Note that the selected cells have to be in a continuous range in a
single column. Also, for reference, my dialog settings are as follows:

Separator options:
  Separated by:
Tab
Comma
Text delimiter:

Nothing else selected.

I really hope this works for you. If not, let us know what is going
wrong, and we'll see if we can't get it working.

Perhaps seeing the screen grab will explain, there is no feedback to
the user at all on the data type in LO.
You mean apart from the justification?
Are you sure the apostrophe is not showing when you have a text data
value in a cell formatted as a number?
And apart from these two indicators, what other indicators does Excel
have (other than the fact that if you examine the format (in your
version) it tells you what the data type is)?

The source for most of my files that I have to add is from an SQLite
Database. The fields that are in the table are defined to be of type
either real or integer (depends on the characteristic I am looking
at) in SQLite. Once I get the proper query done in the database I
save the results as a .CSV file, move the file from the machine that
is doing the field sheep evaluations to my main desktop mac where I
have my main spreadsheep. I bring up the .CSV file and the main sheep
spreadsheet file up at the same time and cut and paste as required. I
can't replace whole columns, my subset from the database often does
not include data for all sheep but only for those individuals who got
evaluated that particular day. My spreadsheet file has one row per
sheep and then hundreds of data points for that specific animal in
the columns. Since often groups of sheep get the same thing done on
the same date I may have many individuals with data related to a
specific item like a vaccine or a wormer.
If you can do Text to Columns on the .csv file before copying the
data over, it would save you a lot of trouble, I think. We really need
to get that working for you.

exist in it.

There is a workaround for this. Place the required symbol in a text
(Writer) document - in an appropriate font - and select it. Now go
to Tools | AutoCorrect Options... | Replace, and you will find that
the required character has already been entered in the With:

Also, this SE arrow shows weirdly in some fonts (I use Times New
Roman), sometime disappearing (leaving an ugly square), sometimes
shrinking. Is this a known bug ?

Not all characters exist in all fonts. If you change to a font in
which the character does not appear, there will be nothing to display.

Is there any workaround ?

Yes: use a font in which the character exists.

I trust this helps.

You can download a free version for Linux or Windows; I didn't see a
Mac option.

It appears to be a completely independent creation, not a fork of
LO/OO. It's main claim is that it imports/exports MS Office files more
faithfully than LO/OO. Also, there are programs for the functionality of
Writer, Calc and Impress, but nothing for Base.

I downloaded the free version, and then decided not to bother
installing it. After all, LO does everything I need, so why bother?
Still, it would be interesting to read a detailed comparative review.
For example, I bet there is no plugin for Zotero and other tools that

[libreoffice-users] Re: CALC convert text to numbers

2013-11-19 Thread Denis Navas Vega
The only way I have to know that the numbers are in reality text, are
that they are originally left aligned. Numbers are right aligned.

In other matter, I get the ' when I apply a number format to a cell
previously formatted as text. If I edit it (F2) I can reach the ' and
edit it by hand. This is really slow and not practical.

I'm with Charles on this one. I was the OP on the problem.

Nearly all of my issues are because I have my LO spreadsheet and then a CSV
file. If I open the CSV file in LO it looks fine. I can't just import it into
my existing spreadsheet because the data in it need to go into small subsets of
my big spreadsheet. So I typically copy and paste groups of cells as required.

What I am used to doing in Excel is copy everything in, then format the cells
to be numbers and they are converted to numbers and my formula work.

Or if I know they are text (but there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY TO SEE THAT IN LO) I
can do a paste special and that also works in excel and prevents the additional
step of formatting the cells back to numbers.

All the discussions about the leading apostrophe are great but I still can't
see it in LO nor can I remove it.

Yes, I got around the problem this time by creating a dummy column as described
many messages ago, but the fact remains that it is neither easy to change nor
easy to see when numbers are formatted as text in LO and coming from MsOffice
this causes lots of problems.

Hello,

I can only speak for myself, but numbers get formatted as text in two ways:

1. Import of a tab delimited or csv file.

2. Spreadsheets sent to me from other users who have imported such files.

Usually I format the import to avoid the problem, but if I just double click a
csv file, it opens with the numbers formatted as text. Visually this is not a
problem. But if I then decide I need to edit the sheet I either have to
reimport it or reformat the numbers.

Hope this explains how it happens to me.

Hi :)
Just downloaded some interesting files from a 'professional' company
involved in communications. no-one else can open their files but
thanks to a little wisdom i learned from this mailing list years ago i
was.

Their files end either in .zip or fail to have any file-endings. I
changed them to .odt and then a double-click opened them. My guess is
that they will try to blame Libreoffice/OpenOffice so if any runs a
blog or anything then it might be neat to get the truth out there in
advance of the FUD for once. If you want verification then i can let
you know who they are off-list but ideally i want to avoid making
their name too public over this mess as they are basically a force for
good in the world even if they stuffed-up this time.

+1
Yes. It is fairly clear if you read the text but people probably
expect to have to pay for something this good. $10 is a pittance
compared to other alternatives and people who feel tricked into giving
the donation get far more from LibreOffice than they would if they had
been forced into buying something similar from anyone else.

Kingsoft and KOffice don't have database programs. Kingsoft doesn't
have a drawing component. Calligra doesn't have as many devs working
at it. Apache OpenOffice is comparatively under-developed (although
that might be a blessing for some). Google-docs is risky if your
internet is unreliable. Each has their niche but LibreOffice covers
more bases. It's possible i might be a little biased of course but i
think our devs, QA, documentation, marketing, designers, user-support
and all the rest have done a great job.

There's a donation option below with the following introductory text:
LibreOffice is Free Software and is made available free of charge. Your

you like the software, please consider a donation.

This is all ok for me.

So, unless there's some other entry point which introduces a donation

The issue here (well, issue might not be the word), is that on some

see the prominent donation part of the page.

But as far as the actual content of the download page is concerned, I

Hi :)
Prezi, htmlslidy, smil, html5 sound worth quickly looking up and maybe
exploring.

Good to see some good suggestions buried away in there. Delivery was
a bit off-putting but it's good to have someone fairly extreme
reminding us that life is worth enjoying rather than going that way
ourselves. A little less tension and a little more humour and fun!

A full Dvd with other OpenSource projects is prolly more than really
needed on this occasion. It's tricky to track all the latest versions
of everything. If you want that sort of thing then look towards the
North American DVD Project or the German one and i suspect a few more
languages have their own versions.

Rhythmbox seems to be quite a popular music player but there are
plenty of options. Vlc can do the job quite well even though it's not
it's main purpose.

LO is not an m$ clone. Use the native file formats. Create odp format

Alternatives exists, such as htmlslidy and prezi. It the slide show is
seemingly of multimedia, could also use html5 and smil, delivering the

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Softmaker

2013-11-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Errr, you did say you knew the list wouldn't be happy about the
suggestion! No need to defend your choice further!

Personally i think people should try out alternatives because i
believe LibreOffice is so much better that people will return to it.
With some alternatives they are better for maybe 1 thing, for example
i think Gnumeric is a better spreadsheet program but Calc is good
enough for most cases. There's nothing stopping people from having
multiple tools and using whichever they feel like using at the time.
Some people have 1 or 2 things that LibreOffice is not great for and
have specialist tools, or going to one of the alternatives for a while
seems like a great option for them.

We don't need one monolithic program that does everything any more.
It's better to have a choice of tools.
Regards from
Tom :)

This list may not like the suggestion, but Softmaker has a free version

Hmmm...No Mac version and not free--unless I overlooked something on the
 website.

 Charles

No, not for Mac, but it sure is available for Linux. Look here:

 http://www.freeoffice.com/en/

AFAIK, it is only short a few fonts compared to the paid version.
I have it on my laptop, and it works great.

 --doug

Checking the website, I only saw Windows and Linux versions.

 That's what I said. I didn't realize you need a Mac program.
