Re: [libreoffice-users] Which components do you use most?

2014-05-16 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Wow! At last some people using Calc more than Writer. Interesting to see
neither seem to need or use Base at all. It kinda makes sense of the high
quality answers we see about Calc though. Other posts in this thread
showing a very low usage of Calc had me worried. I know it's possible to
understand something without using it much but i feel that daily experience
and a lot of usage often helps me learn how to make best use of rare quirks
or good work-arounds for rare oddities = which is one reason i know so
little about Calc.

This mailing-list is a great place to pick-up hints&tips. The marketing
list is trying to deliver daily tips by twitter and anyone who can write a
really short hint or tip would really be helping the wider community quite
a lot. Quite probably you don't even notice using something that noobs
would find hugely useful. "The Calc shuffle" (how to drag a single cell),
for example.
Regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)
Maybe some security or antivirus or firewall or proxy server or flaky wiifi
or router in need of reboot. Doesn't sound very likely to me but it's what
i would usually say.

This seems to happen quite often when there is a new release but only seems
to affect ZenWiz afaik. Don't we usually pass this on to the websites
team? Perhaps ZenWiz has a good system for alerting us to a problem and
should routinely directly contact the websites team?

Tim:

Just my two cents - I used the method you described up to somewhere around
when version 4.x first appeared, but for more recent updates, the donation
page is as far as I can go. Since that time, I've never been able to
download from the site - no error messages or anything like that - just no
download. So, unfortunately, I can't provide any clues.

I'm using 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and the Firefox browser if that makes any
difference. I've read all sorts of reasons why the "official download" might
have stopped working, but none of them make sense to me. Luckily there are
other ways to obtain LO, although it does seem to be just a little risky to
not be getting it from the original source.

Because most of the comments I read seemed to suggest that other people have
no problem with the "official" page, I just assumed that something was amiss
with my system in particular and ignored advice like "try again later" and
the like.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Deleting a Table in Impress

2014-05-16 Thread CVAlkan
Hi:

Someone asked me offline (or is that back channel?) to provide examples of
what I meant by my comments regarding Impress. I think the implication was
that these were unfair rants. So here are examples that come to mind:

1) I said Impress is a "Work in Progress": this wasn't a slur, merely an
observation. One example is that the export to pdf doesn't support anything
but the slides themselves. I don't even know whether the developers ever
intended to "complete" this capability for Notes, Handouts and such. I just
went to utilize a feature that I assumed would be there, and found that it
didn't exist (or at least I can't find any way to make such a choice). I
utilized a third-party "printer driver" which worked just fine, although it
would be nice to have all of the capabilities of LO's own PDF exporter.

2) I said that Impress has "interface inconsistencies": again, just an
observation. One example is that if one copies an object on one slide, and
then pastes it into a different slide, and then uses one of the arrow keys
to move the object's position (the pasted object is clearly selected -
handles showing, etc.), the screen display will jump to an earlier or later
slide rather than moving the object within the slide. If one holds the arrow
down (when, for instance, the object needs to be moved a good distance), you
might end up at the first or last slide of the presentation depending on
your reaction time to the unexpected screen chaos. This is, of course, quite
simply explained by the fact that pasting an object doesn't seem to give
that object (and the slide display) focus, but rather leaves it on the
thumbnails on the left side. I don't believe that is the normally expected
behavior, and it certainly isn't how Writer, for instance, reacts (although
I understand that pages are not "independent" as they are in Impress).
Again, this normally isn't tough to deal with - you just have to remember to
click on the display before attempting to move the pasted object. If you're
pasting a selection of multiple objects, however, you end up needing to
re-select them before moving - and this can be quite tricky if they've
landed on top of other objects.

So, if my comments appeared snooty to anyone else who was too polite to call
me on them publicly, I apologize if the tone seemed offensive. I believe,
however, that the remarks were factual - I certainly can't imagine anyone
making the argument that Impress is at the maturity level of Writer. And I
don't think that should come as a big surprise given the relative importance
(and user interest) of the two. It just 'is what it is' as they say.

Have a great day ...

The download should start soon after you get to that page. But with
default settings in your browser, you will probably be challenged -
by a pretty inconspicuous banner at the top or bottom of the browser
window - to confirm that you do indeed want the somewhat invasive
procedure of a file download. If you don't respond to that, you will
get no further.

I'm using [...] the Firefox browser ...

Firefox needs additional reassurance if you need to download a file
over 50 megabytes in size (as LibreOffice will be). See
http://cdn.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/mega-consent-download-large-files.png
. This panel has no Allow button: you will see this only if you click
the help ("?") icon at the left of the address bar.

I trust this helps.

2014-05-16 Thread Kracked_P_P---webmaster

I use to use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but now use 14.04 and Linux Mint 16.
Both with MATE desktop environment, since I am not fond of Unity. I use
the 64 and 32 bit versions of both. I use Firefox be default. Now that
Chrome has a working 64 bit .deb file version, I have that installed as
well. I have to deal with people who use Chrome and it is easier to
have it on my desktop to work with instead of firing up my Win7 laptop
to help them out.

I just tried the official download page and the pop up window for saving
the file popped up as soon as I saw the "donation information". I did
have my browser ask me if I would allow for "something" to happen that
the page wants done. It is a security option preventing things like
redirection and downloads without my knowledge.

How is your FF setup? What security packages have you added onto it.
Your comment of it might be your setup of FF seems to make me think that
way. Of course I have had the same problem with some issues with LO
that other never had, so it is not uncommon to me. The more I think
about it the more it seems some type of security option is set in FF
that prevents the "save as" pop-up from showing. Try disabling your
add-ons and extension to see if one of those packages are interfering
with it. I know I have one a few years ago that caused me some issues,
or it was a combination of them interacted to the point that I had
problems. So I just disabled all of the add-ons and extensions and add
them back in one by one till I found the one that caused all of the
problems. I do not have as many added to my install of FF as I use to.

"original source"?
The archive page is original "source". It is part of the TDF/LO
server/site system.

Yes, there are other places to get LO installs. I create a DVD
[project] so people would have a physical media to work with instead of
downloading the files. I have passed out these DVDs for several years
now to businesses that would never download the software from the LO
servers. AS for other places, unless it is a Linux repository, I tend
to say away from them. I knew of places in the "early days" of LO that
offered "modified" version of LO for Windows and they were just places
where you got "nasties" installed with the LO software.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Help with LO Base

2014-05-16 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Relational databases have been around for quite a long time now.

When many records/rows contain the same data it helps if that data can be
held separately so that only 1 instance is held with the many rows simply
referencing that 1 instance. That 1 instance can then be edited or updated
affecting all the rows/records simultaneously without any worry that some
records might not have received the change. It keeps data consistent. It
reduces the amount of storage space the database takes up.

Of course, like almost any tool, it can be taken to a ridiculous extreme of
diminishing returns where it becomes worthwhile considering alternatives
but generally it is a good way of making a database more efficient.
Regards from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] displaying/editing a table through LO-Base

2014-05-16 Thread Heinrich Stoellinger

Hello,

To start with - I am not certain that this belongs into THIS "forum"...

I run a MySQL-database which is stored at a Linux-Debian-Squeeze-Server.
This DB consists of "dozens" of inter-related tables, views, functions,
procedures,
etc., etc.
I have been accessing the DB both through the the command-line client and
phpMyAdmin,
adding, updating, deleting tuples with no problems at all with ALL tables.

Except - when accessing the DB through LO-Base, using the JDBC connector from
MySQL
(mysql-connector-java-5.1.30), there is just ONE table which I cannot access.
it is
defined like this:
CREATE TABLE inventar
  (nummer INTEGER NOT NULL,
bezeichnung VARCHAR (255) not null default ' ',
stueckZahl INTEGER not null default 1,
anschDatum DATE not null DEFAULT '1999-09-01',/* Anschaffungsdatum */
fvbNr INTEGER not null default 0, /* Firmennummer des
Lieferanten */
typBesch CHAR(1) not null default 'k',/* Miete, Kauf, Leihe,
Spende,... */
anschKosten FIXED (11,2) default 0, /* Anschaffungskosten in EUR */
   repKosten FIXED (11,2) default 0, /* aufgelaufene
Reparaturkosten in EUR */

Re: [libreoffice-users] displaying/editing a table through LO-Base

2014-05-16 Thread Girvin Herr

Heinrich,
I can't be sure if this is your problem, but in the past, I have
experienced strange behavior in Base when I upgraded MySQL without
saving and restoring the database. In other words, using the old MySQL
version database with the new MySQL version. At those times, I was
getting some complaints in the MySQL log about the database integrity.
However, running the MySQL-suggested database fixer made it worse, not
better. Since then, I have been using the policy to save the database
with mysqldump under the old version, renaming the MySQL database
directory to force a fresh install, upgrading MySQL, and then, after the
installation, restore the database with the new version's mysql. Since
I have been doing that process, I have not seen any database strangeness
and the log remains "clean", but verbose. So, if you have upgraded
MySQL at some time in the past and not "upgraded" the database at that
time, that may be your instability's "root cause".

You may try a save and restore. The conversion process of mysqldump
converting to SQL and mysql importing the resulting SQL can act as a
sort of filter to discard problem areas in the database. I don't think
it will do any harm, but always backup first.

For the record, I am using MySQL 5.5.36 and MySQL-connector-java-5.1.18
and they seem to work well together. (Slackware 14.0 (K3.2.29) Linux)

HTH.

I run a MySQL-database which is stored at a Linux-Debian-Squeeze-Server.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Download page fails again

2014-05-16 Thread Tim Lloyd

Okay so a couple of people having difficulties, let's start digging:

can you download other files normally? Due to the archive reference I
guess the answer is "yes"!

how about other browsers? Can you try something like seamonkey?
In ff/preferences under General where are you downloading to?

Cheers

Because most of the comments I read seemed to suggest that other people have
no problem with the "official" page, I just assumed that something was amiss
with my system in particular and ignored advice like "try again later" and
the like.

I did that, too, and it never worked. Someone posted the link to the
archive, and that's what I now use when the main page fails.

Yep, it's from "Sway". :) I tend to listen to Michael Buble's
version. I also attended a live performance of "Sway" by the Montclair
Women's Big Band, many moon ago. :)

Peace...

I haven't had time to work on the form any, lately. When I do, I'll be
sure to let you know how things go. :)

Peace...
