[libreoffice-users] OS hangs while visiting a LO wiki page

2015-09-15 Thread Ady Ady
 Hello Users of LibreOffice,

Once in a while I visit the Release Plan wiki page,
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan

From that wiki page, I recently tried to visit the "5.0.2" -> "RC1"
page (more than once), but my OS hangs when I click on the relevant
link.

Of course, it could be just a coincidence. I am reluctant to try to
reach these pages again, especially considering that every new wiki
page in the series is based on the prior one.

I am using Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit, with Internet Explorer 9
and Mozilla Firefox 40.0.3, all updated.

The strange behavior happened with both web browsers.

I don't know whether some security tool being in use (e.g. Avast)
might be relevant.

I wanted to share this unusual experience, in case someone else
happens to see it too (or something similar, or at least uncommon),
and/or maybe it might be worth someone checking the source of these
wiki pages (and their related nested templates).

I am aware that this behavior (hanging OS) would be considered
"unlikely to be triggered by some wiki page". The fact that it
happened to me more than once while following the same links (but
nowhere else) pushed me to at least comment on it.

TIA,
Ady.

[libreoffice-users] page numbering oddity

2015-09-15 Thread Mike Scott

Hi. I'm using LO 5.0.1.2 on Mint.

There's an oddity about page numbering, in which differing page styles
change the start page number and total page count.

So, I start LO and make, say, a fresh 3-page document, no manual page
breaks, rather just letting the text flow across page boundaries. On
each page, I add the page number and page count fields. Comfortingly,
the pages now say 1/3, 2/3 and 3/3. That's good.

However, I go to the first page, bring up the stylist, and double-click
"Left Page". The embedded page counts now say 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4. And the
page indicator on LO's lower bar reflects this, saying I have a 4-page
document when it's only 3. (The pages have the correct alternating
Left/Right styles after this)

If I go back to the top, and select either "Default Style" or "Right
Page", the numbering corrects itself.

If instead, I try to use a First Page style, leading to Right, then
Left, I get numbering that looks like 1/4, 3/4 and 3/4. No page 2, and
just plain weird!

I know it's slightly perverse starting with the left page, but I have a
good reason, and surely this shouldn't make the counts wrong. It looks
from here that LO has a hard-wired opinion that page 1 is on the right
of a double-page spread.

The killer is that I can't find an obvious way to fix things up manually
- can anyone help please? I'm hoping I'm just missing something
glaringly obvious.

Thanks.

AndrOffice works off line. However, your friend should test it before
he goes. Also, while it works on a tablet, I'd hate to use it on a phone.

There are currency converters, on Google Play, that might be more
appropriate, though I haven't used any of them.

For any Wordprocessing app for editing, you really need to have an
external keyboard, to save visual space on the tablet's screen.

Also having the portable battery backup devices to help keep a phone and
tablet charged up between "downtime" [when you have access to AC power]
is a must. Also, you really need to take a surge protection device for
when you charge your electronics. This makes sense even if you are
charging the devices at home, let alone abroad.

OFF Topic. . .
You can download the language files for Google Translate, for most of
the languages you can hear while online. This may be good for a
traveler who does not speak the native language for the area that they
are visiting.

Having Translate and a good currency info app may help a lot.

Professional printers always use odd page numbers on rectos (right
pages) and even ones on versos (left pages). If your first page is a
verso, you have left a blank recto before it. LibreOffice is
regarding that as page 1.

o Ensure that Tools | Options... | LibreOffice Writer | Print | Other
| Print automatically inserted blank pages is ticked.

o Go to File | Page Preview.
You should see the actual structure of your document and why the
numbering is behaving as it does.

If I go back to the top, and select either "Default Style" or "Right
Page", the numbering corrects itself.

Because there no longer needs to be a missing page secretly numbered 1.

If instead, I try to use a First Page style, leading to Right, then
Left, I get numbering that looks like 1/4, 3/4 and 3/4. No page 2,
and just plain weird!

(Is that last page actually "4/4"?) That's not weird: you now have
page 1 on a recto, an invisible page 2, and your second page numbered
3 as you have asked for it also to be on a recto.

I know it's slightly perverse starting with the left page, but I
have a good reason, and surely this shouldn't make the counts wrong.

Since you are keeping your "good reason" a secret, I'm not sure what
you mean by a "left page" here. Do you mean that you want to print
double-sided with a blank front page? If not, I don't know why you
need to use the Left Page page style.

It looks from here that LO has a hard-wired opinion that page 1 is

It's hard-wired in printers' brains!

The killer is that I can't find an obvious way to fix things up manually ...

Can you tinker with the page styles or create your own to achieve
what you need? What does each page style have for its Next Style?
What do they have for "Page layout" under "Layout settings" on their Page tabs?

I trust this helps.

Indeed; that shows the problem exactly; many thanks.

Making my first page a "Left Page" style forces a blank page in front of
the document.

to use the Left Page page style.

What I'm doing is printing songs - lyrics plus chords (I've pretty well
sorted out my previous query, modulo workarounds). If I have an even
number of pages, it makes a deal of practical sense (you try turning a
page with two hands on a guitar :-) to use a double-page spread all
through, which puts odd pages on the left. Odd pages on the right may be
standard for books, but shouldn't be compulsory. (My 3-page example was
just that, btw; not a real document)

Can you tinker with the page styles or create your own to achieve what
you need? What does each page style have for its Next Style? What do
they have for "Page layout" under "Layout settings" on their Page tabs?

And after a bit of tinkering I've even found the cure - another twiddly
I didn't properly understand - the Left Page style was set to left pages
only, similarly for Right. Setting both to 'left & right' stops the
blank page generation.

I trust this helps.

Hindsight being perfect, the answer was blindingly obvious. Many thanks
for pointing me in the right direction to see it!

Interesting... I don't see a problem with that page at the moment.
However, since mid July I have been experiencing occasional OS hangs
which seem to be triggered by visiting certain web pages or sometimes
scrolling down the page slightly even after it's been loaded for a
while. Revisiting the same page doesn't necessarily trigger another
hang, but some pages seem to be more prone to it than others.

I use Windows Vista Business 32-bit, Mozilla SeaMonkey 2.33.1 (based on
Firefox 36), Avast antivirus.

One site (www.discount-electrical.co.uk) seemed to be particularly
troublesome. At one point I couldn't even add a few items to the
shopping cart and check out before the OS hung. Hangs seemed to be less
frequent using Chrome instead, but I did still get a few. I didn't try IE.

I haven't had so much trouble since mid August, but then again I haven't
been visiting the sites which seemed to be triggering the problem so
much lately either. Still get a couple of unexplained hangs a week though.

I can't be certain that visiting the web sites is/was the trigger, or
whether that's just coincidental. As you say, it does seem unlikely! If
anything, I'd suspect some interaction with a Windows update or perhaps
Flash or Avast, since I'd just got back from holiday and installed a
load of updates just before the problems started. Another possibility
for me is overheating or failing hardware (this is a 9 year old laptop
so getting on a bit!) but I haven't got around to investigating further.

Mark.

[libreoffice-users] Libreoffice writer very slow with comments open

2015-09-15 Thread kropotkin
Hello all,

I'm using Libreoffice Writer 5 on Kubuntu 14.04. It is very, very slow if I
have the comments open to view on the right hand side. By "very slow", I
mean that it is unresponsive to any command, and I can easily type faster
than it will keep up with. If I hide the comments, there is no problem.

Of course, sometimes, one can just not have the comments open -- but that's
not possible if you're using the program to write documents collaboratively.

I have tried all the usual advice about slowness with Libreoffice, viz.
changing the memory settings. This has made no difference.

Any advice gratefully received!

Cheers,

Nick
