Re: [libreoffice-users] what version of LO would work on a really old system?

2018-02-23 Thread David Burleigh
It's interesting to hear of Kubuntu working well on an old machine.
When I last tried using it a few years ago, Nepumuk and Aconadi bogged
it down so much that it became unusable.

[libreoffice-users] Distorted text when scrolling in Writer

2017-08-01 Thread David Burleigh
There is already at least one bug report about this issue dating back
to 2012, yet still unresolved:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58358
and I'm perplexed as to how something so fundamental and so annoying
can seem to have such low priority. I'm running Linux Mint 18.2
(Cinnamon), and the latest LibreOffice 5.4.0.3, and the distorted text
while scrolling (using Ctrl-downarrow) from paragraph to paragraph is a
very tiresome distraction to getting work done. So I'm wondering
whether other users of the same platform are experiencing the same
thing, and if not, whether there is a work-around -- a setting
somewhere that causes the text to be rendered correctly while
scrolling.

Paragraph margins? I don't see that setting anywhere. There are only
the indents in the style settings.

The page margins are the same for all styles on the page, so I don't
see how those would independently affect the centering of the Title
relative to the other text on the page.

I don't know what you mean by Style Margins. When I edit the Title
style, there is no Margins attribute. There are "Indents & Spacing"
which have zero indents relative to either margin.

[libreoffice-users] Titles not centered in Master Document

2016-12-20 Thread David Burleigh
I have a master document in which the titles in the subdocuments do not
center properly. When opening the subdocuments directly (not within the
master document), the titles center just fine, but the titles are
displayed off-center when they are imported into the master document.
The Title style in both the subdocument and the master document are the
same, using center alignment. The only thing that is different in the
master document format is that it uses a 2-column page format, while
in the subdocument the page format is single column. But I tried
switching to 2-column format in the subdocument when opened
independently from the master document, and the titles center just
fine. It is only when imported into the master document that the titles
are off center. What is going on?

[libreoffice-users] Adding a field to TOC entries

2016-12-16 Thread David Burleigh
Is there any way to add a field to entries in a Table of Contents? For
each chapter in a master document, I want to include in the Table of
Contents, along with the title of that chapter, a unique identifier for
the sub-document that contains that chapter.

Also, is it possible to have a Table of Contents sorted alphabetically,
rather than by consecutive page number? I know I can make an
alphabetical index, but I think it would be cumbersome to limit that
index only have the chapter titles as its entries.

[libreoffice-users] Thunderbird Address Book as Data Source

2013-01-18 Thread David Burleigh
It is very nice that the new 4.0 release includes support for the
Thunderbird address book as a data source for mail merges, but it seems
to only recognize the "Personal Address Book" and not any other address
books defined in Thunderbird. Is there any way to get it to recognize
additional address books defined within Thunderbird?

Re: [libreoffice-users] extension or program for "book printing"?

2012-11-12 Thread David Burleigh
For most impositions I use a very simple "freeware" utility called
"Gimpose" (http://www.noliturbare.com/) which is written for Windows but
runs perfectly under Wine. It does the most common kinds of
impositions, including saddle-stitch booklets, two pages per sheet,
duplicate pages side by side, and cut stacks.

When I need to do more complicated impositions, I have to fire up
Windows XP in a Virtual Box and run Acrobat Pro with the "Quite
Imposing" plugin (which are both rather pricey).

[libreoffice-users] Master Document issue

2012-10-29 Thread David Burleigh
I just spent many hours building a master document which links together
all the chapters of a book, and everything was going fine until somehow,
without any conscious action on my part, it embedded all the linked
documents rather than keeping them as links. Can this be undone, that
is, restoring the original links?

This embedding action defeats the purpose entirely, as I need the
ability to independently edit the linked documents. Then when I reopen
the master document, it normally would display all the updates to the
linked documents. I use Master Documents all the time in this way, and
this mysterious embedding action has never happened before.

Yes, I've installed LibreOffice that way many times, but it results in a
parallel installation into /opt, rather than an upgrade of the existing
version. Also, I am supposing that there is some advantage to whatever
they do to tweak it for (k)ubuntu.
